morning. a small stretch of highway is closed. look at southbound it 280 near at&t park leaving the city, that is closed. "today in the bay" christie smith joining us now from san francisco for the reason for the partial shutdown right in time for the holiday weekend. >> i just got off the phone with caltrans and they're halfway through the demolition work. the seismic safety work which is what this is really about. the result is that the only traffic you see moving here is on the northbound lanes for about a two-mile stretch of 280. they tell me five on and off ramps are now out of commission, including fourth and canyon and sixth and brannen and it comes at a time when the giants start a six-day homestand and also carnaval in the city and students coming home from school and the result is you're just going to have a busy, busy

weekend. people urged to take public transportation and other options including the busy 101 and whatever option they choose, they do plan to wait. >> pretty jammed up at that time of the day to add another 45 minutes or an hour, especially going through the city. >> now, it may seem really inconvenient but caltrans said they were trying to notify drivers for weeks. but it's easier to impact a weekend than a busy week day. southbound lanes closed until tuesday morning. also, we may see this, again, on the fourth of july and then labor day weekend. that's when the northbound lanes will close for exactly the same thing. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a lot of cars out there on the road for that closure. all right, christie, thank you. happening today a woman accused of attacking a 4-year-old girl with a tire iron at walmart will be in court. maria grote entered the walmart last week and hit a little girl

in the head. she is there standing behind her lawyer. the girl's father blocked the second blow from the tire iron. officers say that's when she started singing show tunes and posing for surveillance cameras before laying on the ground and waiting for police. the 20-year-old faces charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and a hate crime enhancement. she said she picked out the girl because of the race. the young girl is expected to fully recover. community organizers will hold a news conference to talk about the rising racial tension in the city of salinas. groups from across the state announce they will join the alliance for respect, dignity and justice. a recent shooting involving two police officers. officer os shot and killed a man on tuesday who they say lunged at him with gardening shears. several protests have broken out since. the two owners of a popular san jose spa accused in one of the biggest medical fraud cases in the bay area this morning. they're accused of using their

spa, called the san jose chiro spa to bilk insurance companies outs of more than $7 million. the investigation dubbed "operation nail polish" began in 2012. prosecutors say an undercover investigator went into the spa numerous times for manicures and pedicures. employees reportedly took the investigator's insurance information and charged the insurance company for chiropractic treatments. they say about 90% of the spa's business was built fraudulently. the owners will be in court next month. a memorial service for the death of a castro valley teenager murdered in her home. she was killed inside her own home. her killer has never been arrested. still a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the person responsible for her death. tonight's memorial will take place at the castro library at

6:00. trying to figure out what to do with the body of a massive baby whale in half moon bay. the hump back is floating near rocky break wall. officials say that's just too dangerous to the do the autopsy do right there in that area. they say they'll wait until the carcass washes further ashore before it gets too badly decomposed to figure out things like how old it is and how it died. a silver lining to the drought, great beaches out there. a new beach report shows because of the dry weather, less runoff into the ocean. as a result, 95% of california's beaches have scored an a or a b on the 2014 beach report card. let's give you a live look at at&t park this morning. reminder giants back in town and start a three-game series with the twins. game right here on nbc bay area. coverage starts at 7:00 right after the news at 6:00. speaking of baseball, look at this. christina loren was that game.

talking about the upper 80s in the warmest cities across the bay area and that's about it. we're still not going to see the triple digits even as we get into this warming trend that will kick into the weekend. santa rosa you hit about 88 degrees and 71 for the east bay and 83 in the tri-valley and comfortable conditions across all your various microclimates and temperatures will stay nice as we get into the weekend. two very different sides for the weekend for your outdoor plans. we'll talk about that and right now bring in mike inouye. he has a busy job. >> yesterday evening's commute, judging by the sensors and my wife's complaints getting home, it sounds like a lot of folks were shuffling their commute a little bit. hitting the roadways and making more local travel. looking at the bay at the glowing lights and christina talking about the changing conditions of fog coming in and the mist may be an issue. at least visibility is okay there. in the east bay still waiting for the full clearing of this van involved in a crash earlier

eastbound 580 away from the maze towards the 980 connector there. now, no real slowing but seeing more cars hit the road and countercommute, a big issue. getting out of the city, a big issue and here is a full closure for southbound 280 from sixth and king all the way down towards pennsylvania avenue. pennsylvania is your local surface street and alternate to that. that will get very crowded later on in the morning and surface street traffic is not so bad. you heard in christie smith's story, take 45 minutes to get through those surface streets over to 101 which is your easier alternate. looking over here towards the rest of the bay and a smoother drive. the slow down starts over for the tri-valley getting out of the area. no problems for the mass transit systems and right now none reported and a live look for 580 westbound where the volume starts to build coming out of the altamont pass. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. 5:08. a south bay landmark has had its last hooray and it's going to

coverage of a meat product known as pink slime. two years ago beef products inc. sued seeking over $1 billion in damages. abc's coverage led to hundreds of layoffs after consumer were misled into believing the product was unsafe. each news broadcast said the product was safe to eat. a new ntsb report find the government did not properly test lithium batteries which found problems across the world. certified the dreamliner er 78 but they criticized the process the faa used and said the organization should have thought out technical advice from someone other than boeing. the dreamliner is the first commercial jet to rely on the rechargeable batteries, but the batteries caught fire on several planes. keep an eye on shares of san francisco's based gap this morning. in a turn around effort with a new leader in finding and

developing fashion. yesterday the company said income was down. let's check the markets and a look at how things are going or will go in a few minutes. seema mody, good morning. >> good morning, scott. futures right now are higher, they're indicating an open to the upside and the markets today. this, of course, after stocks rose for the fourth time in five days on thursday. investors digesting a number of economic reports showing sales of previously owned homes picked up last month while more people filed for unemployment benefits in the past week. data today on home sales be sure to watch out for that. the dow rising 10 points and nasdaq up 22 in yesterday's trade. facebook is rolling out new privacy features posts from new users will only be shared with friends unless they change the default settings before posts can be viewed by everyone. for existing users they have a privacy check-up tool to see who is viewing their posts and what private information they may be

sharing on their profile. something to watch out for. >> at least it's going privacy that direction. we appreciate it. have a great three-day weekend. take a look at this time lapse video worth a peek here as we go to reno this huge dust storm blocks out the whole city. you can see reno disappear into the dark as the dust moves over. this lasted 15 to 20 minutes and wind gusts there 40 miles an hour and no injuries or damages to report but probably quite a bit of cleanup there. hopefully windows were closed there. you don't see that too often. >> no, you don't. >> meantime, wonderful forecast for us. >> that will clog a pool very quickly, as well. that is actually not completely out of the ordinary. we see that often. in phoenix and also in las vegas and all of our desert areas. now, for us here in the bay area, we had some gusty wind, as well. but for the past couple days, temperatures have been right around at average, not any more

than average. i can tell you right now, though, the climb begins. you notice that difference today. overcast south bay to start the day. that natural ac is on. it's coming in all the way into the tri-valley. you'll wake up with an overcast start. beautiful day shaping up. the fog is starting to settle in over the golden gate bridge. as we progress throughout the morning it's really cool if you stick with us through the 7:00 hour you notice the fog settling in and lowering here as we don't have a lot of wind. what happened the storm system lingering over the sierra nevada and now heading out of here. calm conditions for today, but without that wind, that fog can really settle in. that dense ergos right to the surface. 57 degrees in the south bay and 55 degrees for the east bay and 52 in the north bay. want to take you into your holiday weekend after all. you worked hard for it and you made it to friday. good-looking weekend coming your way. up to 87 degrees, though, on sunday in the south bay. so, if you want to hit your beach, yeah, hit the beach on sunday. your local beaches are going to be comfortable. santa cruz on sunday about 80

degrees and see temperatures more like 72 degrees ocean beach on sunday. and, yeah, let's take a little sneak peek at what those giants get to come home to after going through severe weather conditions out in denver. 63 degrees, calm conditions 7:15 tonight. if you can't make it out to at&t park, keep it right here on nbc bay area. 65 degrees for saturday and 73 degrees, beautiful conditions for that day game out there. we will keep you updated and let's check on your drive and see how that is progressing this morning. here's mike inouye. >> making good progress here in san jose. northbound 101 with no problems and not a big surprise as far as the volumes go. this is the bottom of your screen for the bay, the south bay and in the south of the bay. all right. now, that that is explained. we're looking over the rest of the bay and traffic flows smoothly along the peninsula and show you where there is an issue. southbound 280 continues to have that closure from sixth and king down to pennsylvania.

this stretch right here getting away from at&t park and the giants play tonight, for example, as christina is telling you a good homestand and folks get over towards sixth and 101 which is our alternate and nothing unexpected but she could see how surface street traffic will be a major issue throughout much of the rest of the day hours in the bay area, as well as after those games. be careful giants fans. over here a smooth drive through the tri-valley and not a big deal because the volume is very light right now coming out of the altamont but steady flow for 680. a smooth flow for the rest of the approach coming across the carquinez and get away traffic will start earlier, probably around 10:00 or 11:00. we'll start to see more traffic heading out of the bay and definitely by early afternoon. the north bay, a live look out there shows you san rafael and an easy drive right now and no problems for fog and some developing across the golden gate bridge we told you about. low clouds settling around and

the east shore freeway, you're back at speed. back to you. the precarious situation in thailand continues after a military coup thai's military members of a politically influential family to a meeting in bangkok. the people were summoned to, "keep peace and order and solve the country's problems." troops are stationed in the middle of the city, but there is little military presence on the street otherwise. an indian climber and her two sherpa guides are presumed dead on the world's third tallest peak. rescuers have found no trace of the three climbers after they were hit in avalanche after last month's avalanche on mt. everest killed 16. brian williams sits down for a one-on-one interview with former nsa contractor edward snowden. williams travelled to moscow earlier this week for an in-person conversation with snowden.

that interview lasted several hours and shrouded in secrecy due to snowden's life in exile after leaking documents about u.s. surveillance program. the hour-long interview will air on wednesday at 10:00 p.m. changes coming to the altamont pass. new plans to build these shrouded turbines on the hill. now, the wind mill design is supposed to be less lethal. the plan is to replace 73 existing wind mills on the hill. the fish and wildlife department and other wildlife groups support that new design. people in the south bay will get a chance to say good-bye to a childhood staple. will hold its final events over the next few days. a lot of the people nostalgic about this one. t it is a fare well to the south bay's last roler skating rink. it will leave the roller girls and the roller derby league without a place to play.

like the unofficial kickoff of summertime. now, sunday is going to be your better day for outdoor activities. right now in the 50s and headed towards the 80s and 70s, comfortable conditions meanwhile in the east bay. look at your variety when it comes to the microclimate. oaktown at 74 and 67 in san francisco. it's overcast out there, little fog, as well. let's check on that drive, here's mike. >> i'm going to show that same view of the bay bridge from emeryville because of what you're talking about the overcast skies and the midst of fog may be an issue for slicker roadways. so far no reports and the live cameras don't see any problems, but, again, a chance. i saw a lot of slowing over the last five minutes eastbound heading away from the city. once those decks merge right there at treasure island and just past it, i saw a lot of slowing. now that should be cleared from the area and the live look didn't show any problems and neither do our sensors any more.

and happy friday morning to you. thank you for joining us, i'm peggy bunker. laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. weekend road work will tie up your memorial day plans. >> good morning, scott. a big issue especially for giants fans heading to the games. keep this in mind but local to the area, as well. we're talking about part of interstate 280 in san francisco. the roadway just closed last night and not expected to reopen until 5:00 tuesday morning. that's after the entire holiday weekend. that, of course, could change depending on how well the work goes but just the southbound sides of lanes 280 between pennsylvania avenue are affected by this. christie smith out near the construction. christie, all of this is in the name of seismic safety, is that right? >> that's right, good morning to you, mike. happy friday. this is all for seismic safety work. right now only the northbound lanes are moving and it's going to be that way for the next couple days.

southbound lanes completely shut down this morning. going to have a big impact over the weekend. just got off the phone with caltrans and they told me they considered leaving one lane open southbound but their model showed that would create a backup about seven miles long and certainly no one wants that. so, the southbound lanes went, they closed about 9:00 last night. talking about busy ramps included in this fourth and king and sixth and brannen are all out of commission along a two-mile stretch of 280. for drivers, of course, they're expecting a lot of company on the city streets and alternate routes like 101 and it comes on a busy weekend. carnaval is happening and also a six-day home stand for the giants. fans are urged to leave their cars at home. >> get on caltrain if they can and they're coming from the peninsula and allow for extra time. we really believe it will impact outbound when people are leaving our game. >> cal trans tells me this

morning that the demo work is halfway done and completed by late morning and then start the seismic work. southbound lanes closed until 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning and then we'll see something similar fourth of july weekend and then labor day weekend. northbound lanes will be closed for the exact same reason. and, of course, what you're going to be thinking about is ways to get around it and, mike, i think you have some ideas on that. >> exactly, christie. we'll have to avoid that side of the freeway. folks, your best bet to avoid the freeway altogether but if you have to go that way, some suggestions for you. cal trans southbound traffic and surface street traffic will be an issue getting over there sixth from king will be the best route. maripos street and take that south along parallel to the freeway and jump on to the southbound side of 280 at that point and the northbound side important to note northbound 280 will remain open during the

entire holiday weekend. extensive information on the 280 closure and how to get around it. just search 280 closure and you'll get the low down. back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you so much. new this morning, homicide investigators are trying to figure out who shot two people at the scene of a car crash in hayward. last night, police were called to saklin road near interstate 880. there they found two wrecked cars and a 22-year-old who had been shot and killed. another shooting victim was later found at a nearby hospital. police believe that he was shot in the same incident. his injuries are not life threatening. police say as of now they don't know who is behind the shooting. the south bay woman accused of stabbing her baby to death will be in court this morning. 23-year-old ashley newton arrested last month. investigators say she drove her 7-month-old boy to a park in livermore, deliberately wrecked her car and stabbed the child. when she was found, officials say she had stab wounds that were believed to be

self-inflicted. today her lawyer will give an update on conditions on how she's doing and she may enter a plea. livermore police are warning women to leave their headphones at home when they go out for a run p. officers say a man grabbed a woman from behind when she was running. she couldn't hear the man because she was listening to music as she ran. she escaped after a struggle. officers say they're checking to see if it is the same man that attacked several other joggers in recent years. before robbing a fast food restaurant. this all happened last night in morgan hill at the target parking lot and subway. now, those are on opposite sides of highway 101 near cochran road. "today in the bay" bob redell live in morgan hill. bob, they released a pretty good surveillance picture of this suspect, right? >> they did. what makes this crime frightening is that this man had the guts to try to pull this off when this parking lot was

crowded. the target parking lot was crowded around 9:00 last night a lot of shoppers and, yet, he felt the courage to try to do this. this is who he is. you can see surveillance image of him. he looked like he was possibly at the target store in some point. you can see him with a mohawk but the robbery took place, as i mentioned, in the parking lot. he was in his car according to morgan hill police and had a shotgun and drove up to a customer at the store in the parking lot and showed the shotgun and tried to rob her of her purse and she refused. so this man then took off. here's another image of the car he was in. either a chevy cavalier or dodge neon four door and a protective cover that people sometimes put on the cars. he took off in that car and then he went across down cochran across 101 and ended up robbing a subway shop. took a certain amount of money and police wouldn't say how

much. in that robbery he also used the shotgun. let's go back to the image of this man and get a better description. police are trying to find him. obviously, you can see he's white and in his 20s, slim built, mohawk and also tattoo on his outer left wrist and last seen wearing a black t-shirt, the green shorts and the black and white shoes. again, the woman that he confronted here in the parking lot at target is okay. but he is considered armed and dangerous and that's why police want to find him because he did pull off a robbery down the street at that subway and no one was hurt in that either. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." new rules go in effect today. tacks on a curfew for bonfires that must be out by 9:00 p.m. and not allowed on spare the air days. last until labor day and then the national park service will decide to make them permanent. getting a look at the sky

above san jose. you can see starting to get lighter out there. you also might want to stay up late tonight trying to catch a glimpse of the first of its kind meteor shower called the giraffe meteor shower. some scientists say more than 200 meteors per hour. no one knows for sure if that could happen or not, but the best time to spot that action from 11:00 p.m. to about 1:00 in the morning. the best viewing areas are, of course, away from the coast and any light pollution as it's known. that would be neat. >> i have a memory of me and the kids on the driveway and on the sleeping bags just looking up. let's check in our microclimate forecast with christina loren. good morning. >> they are the most vivid of the year. you have to wait for august for those. this is the first of its kind and an in-depth look at the forecast behind the meteor shower as we get into the next couple of hours. i can tell you right now, though. san jose a good spot and you want to get up into the mountains, if you can, for the best visibility. we're looking really good.

until next wednesday night to show up in person, explain what's going on, bring those documents or subpoenas we're told are going out thursday morning. >> i was going to say, sounds like subpoena the next level of action. thank you, tracie. 21 people were killed by a mortar round at an election rally overnight. investigators say 11 of those 21 people killed were civilians. they were at a rally in the southern city showing their support for president assad when they fired the shell at them. 30 assad supporters were hurt. assad widely expected to win a third, seven-year term. tennessee is bringing back the electric chair after a nationwide shortage of lethal injection drugs for inmates. the state will only use the prison chair if they can't get the lethal injections. comes shortly after that botched execution in oklahoma where a man began rising and clenching

his teeth moments after getting the first dose of a lethal injection combination. tennessee will be the first state to reintroduce the electric chair without giving prisoners an option. a man akudz of holding a woman for ten years against her will says she is making the story up. garcia said the 25-year-old woman he allegedly abducted is lying about her claims of physical and sexual abuse because the couple is breaking up. prosecutors filed five felony charges against garcia. investigators say garcia reportedly raped and beat the girl after she tried to escape several times. authorities also say he forced her to marry him and have his child. well, crews are finally gaining control of that massive wildfire in northern arizona. in the sedona at slide rock park. boy, big fire. it's been burning now for the past three days. so far it has charred an area bigger than the city of san francisco. officials believe that a person started the blaze, but they've

not found that person just yet. hundreds of businesses and homes were evacuated. no reports of any injuries or structures, though, being burned. and another wildfire. this one in alaska. firefighters there are struggling to contain a 63,000 acre fire burning close to a nearby airport on the peninsula. right now it is 5% contained only. no reports of injuries or structure damage there but that fire started four days ago. authorities say it was likely caused by a camp fire. >> i'm no climateologist, but when alaska is on fire, seems to be very strange. >> yeah, very dry out there. in order to get snowfall, you need that dry air. so, very interesting. but, yeah, for us here when it comes to fire danger, we're looking okay. 5:46. as we head outdoors and we get into the next cup dales, temperatures will warm up for us. san francisco kicking off the day at 56 degrees. so, locally, we are looking really good as we head throughout the next couple days,

though, warm ups on and then we'll cool you right back down. no extremes in your weather forecast and, in fact, rather quiet which is good news. after that we had that heat wave last week. temperatures for today, pretty comfortable. 82 in the south bay and east bay 84. let's talk about your beach cities. you probably have tomorrow off and if you have monday off, temperatures comfortable, as well. the next couple days will be your days to hit the beach. 74 degrees in ocean beach and 80 down in santa cruz. getting into the all-important holiday weekend. temperatures on monday will be at 82 degrees and 71, though, in the city. so, san jose versus right at the immediate coast. quite a bit different as we get into this weekend. too hot you can always hit the beach where you'll see 10 to 15 degrees of cooling. you have to love the microclimates for that reason. microclimates will stay nice and steady. monday looking to be the

coolest, 71 degrees and continue the cool down into next week. any sort of a break, this is the time when you can really tell how average that commute is looking. what do you think, mike, average, good, bad, ugly? what do we have? >> average, back to you. no, we're looking over here friday commute. like christina said, an average friday and little bit lighter than friday because we have that holiday weekend approaching. yesterday's traffic as we look at the map it was really jammed up all over my bay area maps. and it was very tough. it looks like a lot of folks actually trying to get away a little bit early. this morning a little late for the start of the burst through san jose. this is the light volume and the time we would expect to see a light burst even on a friday and slowing at 60 miles per hour and the rest of the south bay moving very smoothly, as well. look here at the san mateo bridge and the live look across the bay. looking at low clouds christina is talking asxwout peninsula hills over 101 and foster city and the approach off of the high rise and an easy, lighter flow

and no problem for speeds on the peninsula. back to the map, talking about the fog sneaking in across the golden gate bridge and we've seen christina's live shots. that's a concern. no problem towards the area and getting into san francisco. out of san francisco where southbound 280 is closed and continuing on until tuesday and 5:00 a.m. likely and retrofit work going on. jump on anywhere south of pennsylvania avenue and take 101 south getting there to the area of at&t park and a nightmare this evening after the game and a long homestand there for the giants. we're looking at the rest of the north bay and east bay and a smooth drive towards the bay bridge and the toll plaza and an easy flow through the toll plaza, as well. i'm watching san ramen and some slowing there. back to you. two life-long friends say they have come up with a plan to bridge the late night transportation gap from san francisco to oakland called night school. they plan to rent school buses to take people back and forth from downtown oakland to san francisco's mission district. as of now, those are going to be the only two stops.
