"today," saturday, may 24th, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with lester holt and erica hill live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to today. i'm lester holt. >> i'm kate snow alongside jenna wolfe and jenna drier. erica taking the morning off. we want to get to our top story today. that deadly shooting near the campus of university of california near santa barbara. >> kristin dahlgren is following the developments good morning. details are still trickling in. here is what we know so far. this is a community near the u.c. santa barbara campus where many students live. around 9:30 pacific, gunfire rang out from a suspected attacker driving a black bmw. according to police, it is unclear who the target or

targets were. the shooter was near the college. they say no shots were ever fired on campus. at least seven were killed. the gunman is among them. the suspect had exchanged gunfire with sheriff dep it is but unclear if he was shot by dep it is or the wounds were self-inflicted. another seven people were injured. one is undergoing surgery for life-threatening injuries. the local sheriff spoke at a news conference a short time ago. >> this is still a very active investigation, as you can imagine, a very chaotic series of crime scenes. although we have preliminarily identified the suspect, we are not releasing the suspect's name until a positive identification can be made. >> now, residents were urged to stay inside while police were on the scene. we will continue to follow this story and bring you any new developments. lester? >> kristen, thanks. let's take a big turn now and get to the memorial day weekend weather forecast. it is already gotten off to a rough start across the country. some areas seeing massive

thunderstorms. others, cleaning up after a possible tornado. there could be more nasty weather in parts of the country. today, dylan is tracking it all. >> it was really noisy around here. >> it was really noisy and wet and miserable. it was a wild night of storms last night. it kept a lot of people up late, just as their memorial day weekend got underway. spring storms wreaking havoc across the country. in wyoming, a possible tornado touched down near casper mountain friday. there were no reports of any injuries or damage. while out east, it was high winds, hail, and ice pounding parts of charlotte, north carolina. several people were hurt when the winds brought down tents and scaffolding at a street festival. the storms passed quickly. no reports of major damage. here in new york, thunderstorms led to flooding that snarled the memorial day getaway on the

roads and led to flight delays. one motorist captured this lightning strike near newark, new jersey. take a look at this. another lightning strike at one world trade center in lower manhattan. today, we are still going to see scattered showers and storms in the northeast but not as widespread as yesterday. we shouldn't here as much noise as we heard yesterday. back through texas, that's a different story. this area in red, that's where we could see some of our strongest storms. it is already pouring there right now. we could end up with 5 inches of rain. an area that is very much drought-stricken. we do need the rain there. we could see snow in some of the higher elevations, specially above 10,000 feet. scattered showers and storms through the middle of the country. it is going to be unsettled today. tomorrow, you can see that slight risk of storms. we are still going to be fairly stormy down that way with scattered showers and storms from north dakota to southern texas. the northeast does start to dry out. on memorial day itself, through

the tri-state area into the mid-atlantic, we are going to see our nicest weather, still with the strong risk of storms in texas and the midwest will start to heat up again. it continues with temperatures up around 100 degrees. kate? dylan, a lot of people with plans. we will check back with you. now, to the high-profile three-day trip to the holy land by pope francis. his plane just touched down a short time ago in jordan. his first visit to the middle east. his trip is historic. it comes with controversy. ann thompson is covering this for us in jar done. ann, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kate. this is a very ambitious trip for the 77-year-old pope francis. from jordan, he is going to go to the palestinian territories and then israel. he will make 13 speeches and celebrate 3 masses in three days. he will meet with heads of state. the pope insists this trip is strictly religious.

>> reporter: pope francis comes to build bridges between the often warring countries of the middle east. jordan is an exception. in this majority muslim kingdom, only 2% are christian. the focus is not on what makes people different but what they have in common says this int-faith man. >> tell me about the badge. >> it means to be one. >> this evening, pope francis will visit bethany on the jordan river where christ was baptized by john the baptist, one of the holiest sites. he will meet some refugees and find help at catholic areas like this. >> reporter: they can only meet the needs of about 60% of the

the morning's top stories. good morning, everyone. firefighters expect the wild fire burning out of control near flagstaff, arizona, to triple in size today. they are allowing it to burn into a less mountainous area where they will try to contain it. 900 firefighters are on the scene trying to protect 300 homes. no homes have been reported burned so far. people living in portland have been told to boil their water before drinking. bottled water is racing off the shelves after the city detected e-coli in the drinking supply. more than half a million customers are at risk for contracted diarrhea and abdominal cramps a deadly multi-car crash at the start of this holiday weekend. seven people were killed along interstate 10 in southwest new mexico, friday. police say it started in a blinding dust storm. one car stopped and the others slammed into each other. >> major changes are in play for the troubled veterans affairs

department. the chairman of the house veterans affairs committee is asking for an emergency directive that would allow veterans to get health care from nonv. non-v.a. facilities if waiting more than 30 days. legislation coming from the senate that will call for a shakeup of top administrators. >> how about this for heroics. a 4-year-old boy saved his mom by calling 911. >> is your mama awake? >> no. she's on the ground with her eyes closed and she can't move. >> yep. 4-year-old jaden house's mom collapsed earlier this week. just like he had been taught, he grabbed her cell phone nd acalled for help. four years old, mind you. mom had a severe sinus infection and says her little boy is her hero. that is an understatement. how about that. you always see stories about that. is my kid going to be able to do that? will my kid know how to do that? >> he was so calm. >> glad to see the mom is okay. >> jenna, thanks

secretary of state, john kerry, will be in the hot seat next month testifying for lawmakers about the 2012 incident at benghazi. kristen welker is at the white house with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: lester, good morning. on one level, kerry's decision to testify is an attempt to confuse republicans who have been calling on him to answer questions about benghazi. he has made it very clear he is not going to testify again or appear before that new select committee. since kerry came into his position six months after the attack, he is expected to get questions about the state department's cooperation in providing documents but he really can't speak to the state department's handling of that night. now, kerry has rejected two earlier requests to testify. the state department said in both cases he had other responsibilities. democrats have accused republicans of playing politics with this issue. it is a hot-button issue. no doubt republicans see benghazi as a politically viable

issue for them in 2014. you can expect to hear a lot more about this since we head toward the mid-terms and in 2016 if hillary clinton decides to run. >> i know this game of cabinet musical chairs continues. the president tapped julian castro to become his next housing secretary. >> reporter: with this nomination, president obama is doing a couple of things. he is elevating a rising star in the democratic party. he is also really giving a nod to the latino community at a time when they want him to be doing more to get immigration reform passed. latinos, of course, as you know, lester, a crucial voting bloc as democrats fight to hold on to the senate in 2014. now, white house officials say castro was a good choice because of his success at revitalizing san antonio. he rose to national prominence when he delivered the keynote speech at the democratic convention in 2012. since then, his star power has

continued to rise. there is buzz he might be a potential vice presidential pick in 2016. this helps him get there. >> kristen walker, thanks very much. kate? as millions of americans take to the skies, we are learning about several serious mid-air close calls. recently, a jetblue plane aborted a landing and got way to close to another plane at jfk here in new york. now, we are hearing about an even closer call in the skies over houston. here is tom costello. >> reporter: the close calls involve air traffic controllers on each end of the country. may 9th, in houston, united flight 601 was departing for vancouver on runway 9 as united flight 437 was leaving for mexico city on runway 15. the controller made a serious mistake. turn right, right turn, heading p-4-0. >> reporter: instead of telling the vancouver flight to turn left. he told the flight to turn right into the path of the other plane. the controller then quickly

realized his mistake. united 601, stop your turn, stop your turn for united 601. >> reporter: they came within 400 feet vertically. .8 of a foot laterally. it blew right over the top of a departing regional flight cleared for takeoff on an intersecting runway. they missed each other by just 400 feet. the faa has since ordered changes to the runway layout. >> the air traffic controller is talking nonstop. they are having to do a core rio graphed dance with all these airplanes coming and going. >> reporter: april 25th, 200 miles northeast of kona, hawaii, a united 757 and us airways 757 on a collision course flying at 37,000 feet when their collision avoidance alarms went off. the unite td plane dove 600 feet to avoid a head-on.

controllers mistakenly put both planes at the same altitude. they were looking at the role that veterans made. >> if they are making the same errors over and over, we need to look deeper and see if there is a procedural problem. >> reporter: there were 41 high-risk close calls in 2012. despite the fact controllers were involved, the faa says it cease no similarities. it is looking at whether the recent high number of retiring controllers is in any way a factor. we have an update this morning on recently revealed and very personal letters between jackie kennedy and an irish priest for more than 50 years ago. they have been abruptly withdrawn from the auction block two weeks before they were set to go on sale. it was a correspondence that showed us a rare side of jackie o. for now, they will remain within the kennedy family. once again, here is kristen welker. >> reporter: the irish auction house had hoped to fetch up to

$5 million for what it called, the quote, unpublished autobiography of jackie kennedy, her letters to an irish priest, providing fascinating insight into one of the 20th centuries's most enigmatic women. the priest, joseph leonard. >> i really must stop now but bushels, barrels and carts and lorie loads of love to you, signed jack little, xo. >> they began this extraordinary correspondence when she left ireland and it continued until father leonard died in 1964. >> reporter: this morning, the auction is off. dublin's all hallowed college announced the rediscovery of his will called in question whether the letters belongedo skoolt to sell. that was a factor in the auction being cancelled a college spokesman told nbc news that and the introduction of the kennedy family into the proceeding. he has read jackie kennedy's will.

off summer here. we are going to see right in the middle of the country our worst weather. we do have a couple scattered showers and storms in the northeast as that area of low pressure pulse away. it is not a washout but those are scattered showers and storms that will pop out similar to yesterday. as we go into sunday, the conditions continue to improve as high pressure moves in from the west. elsewhere, strong storms down across texas. they could end up with 5 inches of rain over the and we're seeing a pretty nice start to your saturday right now. patchy clouds outside and we should see patchy clouds this evening for the giants game. temperatures in the low 60s around 7:00 today and for the rest of the weekend, temperatures will be climbing up a little bit more than the low 80s we'll see closer to san jose, mid 60s near san francisco and temperatures around the north bay in the mid 80s around santa rosa, pleasonton 86 and we should see temperatures climbing more through sunday and then cooling approaching the middle part of the week.

that's your latest forecast. kate? >> dylan, thanks. have you ever heard of a bongo? no, not the drum. not that one. it is a kind of an antelope, lester. if you have never heard of it, there might be a really good reason. they may be close to extinction. as kerry saunders reports, a few scientists are working to make sure that doesn't happen. >> reporter: this is a hunt, not to kill but rather to save the bongo. on this date, teams dart the mountain bonn goes with tranquilizers as a biologist takes one more step towards saving a species that almost disappeared forever. two decades ago, an ideal lis stick young american, paul rye low, set out on a mission to save this obscure animal. >> will the bongo make it? >> i think it will. this is a species that we feared was extinct on mount kenya 1994.

>> reporter: this baby bongo was orphaned when her mother died while giving birth. for the majority, like these yearlings that have had no human contact. >> perfect body condition. she is exactly how she is supposed to look. we are going to load her into the trailer. >> reporter: born in rural south florida, they are being moved to more expansive acreage up-state and then they will follow the same route of those before them, a flight to africa, eventually released into the wild to mount kenya and the abadairs. it is estimated there are only 80 wild bongos living in the dense, african underbrush, some that began life here in florida. in recent months, remote cameras have documented bongos that were born in the wilds of africa. a positive signs, say biologists, that the tiny population is growing. >> i need five of that, five of

you are watching "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. looking live at the first start of the sunrise still a couple hours away. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda who has a forecast for your holiday weekend. >> and looks pretty good so far this weekend. mostly clear skies around the bay area and should be a mostly cool evening in san francisco. giants/twins looking at temperatures in the low 60s by 7:00 and during the afternoon we should see temperatures at least briefly approaching the upper 60s closer to san francisco, san jose today, near 80 degrees. air quality this weekend looks pretty good. enough of a sea breeze to keep air equal levels in the good to moderate range. temperatures closer to the embark dario in the 60s. five-day forecast, our

temperatures will climb into the 70s around san francisco tomorrow, trending cooler towards memorial day on monday and for the north bay, 86 in santa rosa and also mid 80s into pleasonton and 76 degrees closer to fremont. kris? >> rob mentioned it is memorial day weekend and for a lot of folks that means an extra day off, sometimes an extra cocktail or two. that's why law enforcement wants to warn drivers to avoid drinking and driving. this is just one of many dui checkpoints across the bay area and you can expect these to pop up throughout the holiday weekend. san mateo police are stopping vehicles at random looking for signs the driver is under the influence. in addition to the checkpoints and stepped up police patrols police want other drivers to be on the lookout and call 911 if they see a drunk driver. >> to continuing coverage on the partial interstate 280 closure making traffic congested around at&t park.

the shutdown is southbound 280 from sixth street to pennsylvania avenue and will have a big impact on drivers this memorial day weekend. find fans who live on the peninsula or south bay used to jumping on 280 found out the hard way the detour is now reality. the 280 extension closure had fans driving around in heavy traffic looking for an on ramp. the giants did use social media to discourage fans from driving to avoid a traffic mess in the first place, but many fans did get the message, used cal trains to get to the game. other fans got stuck in the gridlock. the pillow case rapist is being patrolled. a santa clara judge ordered christopher hub burt released from a facility and sent to his home in palmdale in los angeles county. hubbart's most recent crimes happened in santa clara county. hubbart was convicted of raping nearly 40 women including in some the bay area bay area. the judge ordered the release

today. in the middle of the country, that's where we are going to see our strongest storms. look at the water temperatures, running below average for this time of year. still, not too bad down across the gulf coast. we are looking for the chance of stronger storms, specially across eastern new mexico and western texas. the biggest threat will be hail, 2 inches in diameter and larger. we could end up with a little bit of light snow. a little unsettled as we kick of we're seeing temperatures right now in the 50s and a pretty nice kickoff to memorial day weekend in terms of our temperatures near 80 later today in sympatan jose, mid 60s, santa 86 degrees, 74 oakland, pleasonton 86 and notice here as the trend goes through the holiday weekend, tomorrow temperatures closer to 90 degrees around livermore then turning a little cooler into monday with some continued cooling as we approach the

region. good morning. welcome to today. i'm lester holt along with kate snow in for erica hill along with jenna wolfe and dylan dreyer. a deadly shooting in a college town near the university of california, santa barbara. we have more news about the fear and chaos when gunfire began around 9:30 pacific last night. >> mike taibbi is following it off from our los angeles "newsroom." good morning, lester. the santa barbara county sheriff is calling this a pre-medicated mass murder but a suspect who was severely mentally seven injured, one with life threatening injuries. the first 911 call came in at 9:27 in isla vista. that's about 90 miles up the coast from l.a. the callers, the first describe a shooting spree by shn driving around in a bmw-suv. police went to the first location and found several

victims down. then they encountered the alleged shooter and got into an exchange that left him dead of a gun shshot wound to his head. not known if it was self-inflicted. police investigate a youtube video posted before the shooting spree described as a manifesto and a specific warning about what was about to happen. sheriff brown said the probe of that among others is ongoing. >> this is still a very active investigation and as you can imagine, a very chaotic series of crime scenes. although we have preliminarily identified the suspect we are not releasing the suspect's name until a positive identification can be made. >> for the video we've seen it, it's chilling to watch. we're trying to confirm the providence of it. for the weapon used in this shooting spree police say it was a semi-automatic handgun that was recovered at the scene where the suspect was killed. >> mike taibbi, thanks.

>> let's turn to the weather on this memorial day weekend. it's off to a rocky start here in the new york area. a violent thunder and lightning storm rained down for hours and incredible shot as a bolt of lightning hit 1 world trade center in lower manhattan. in new jersey, drivers were left dealing with flooded roads, dylan is tracking the rest of the weekend weather for us. good morning again. >> good morning, kate. it was a busy day yesterday with autumn of those storms, we have reports of very large hail in parts of the southeast and even a possible funnel cloud that never really became a tornado. that was out in wyoming. but right now we are looking at some of our heaviest rain moving through northern texas now, you can see flashes. that's your lightning. we have strong storms out there this morning and this area in red including the panhandle of oklahoma, eastern new mexico and also way down in southern texas that's where we could see another round of very strong storms today. especially hail, that will be

say other drivers should be on the lookout as well. and now to continuing coverage of the partial interstate 280 closure that is making traffic very congested around at&t park. the shutdown southbound 280 from sixth street to pennsylvania avenue will have a big impact on drivers this memorial day weekend. giants fans who live on the peninsula or south bay used to jumping on 280 found out the hard way after last night's game there are detours. the 280 extension had fans driving around in heavy traffic looking for an onramp. giants did use social media to discourage fans from driving to avoid that traffic mess and a lot of fans took that warning in stride got on cal train and made it to the game with a lot less frustration than driving. the pillowcase rapist is being patrolled. a judge ruled christopher hubbart released from a northern california facility and stoents
