. hello and welcome to "comunidad del valle." today it's fun to stay at the ymca, plus the sounds of -- nbc bay area rents "comunidad del valle." >> we begin today with the importance of reading. your children reading during the summer. with me on "comunidad del valle," we have a guest with the san jose public library system. our children are getting out of school now and it's going to be a summer break and we have had guests here on the show talking about what will we do with the children over the summer. the importance of the reading. the library is issuing a reading challenge, tell us about it?

>> we want to challenge all san jose residents to read 20 minutes a day. it adds a huge benefit for the children and teens. they prevent going down the summer's learning slide and normally when we -- when children and teens read 20 minutes a day, they are ranked in the 90th pertain of their standardized test and their who prepared for the school year. they improve on comphension. so it's a good way to have them strengthen their reading. >> you used a phrase called the summer learning slide, it makes sense. >> when children and teens don't read over the summer, they lose what they have learned in the school year. so in order for them to maintain, to maintain what they learned they need to continue to feed their minds through reading and doing activities and stay

active in the summer. >> what about the latch key kids that say, you learn what i can because i have to go to work. it has to be tough for families. >> library is open to everyone. it's great resource, especially during and after school hours. we encourage parents that cannot take them to the library, we offer work shops and programs. we are partnering with text shop san jose, so they will learn about science, math, technology, arts and, just also, we will be doing with the san jose earthquakes. so they will have activities on how to live a healthy active lifestyle in the summer and they will promote literacy. it's important for that to be in everybody's mind. by reading 20 minutes a day. they could improve on a lot of

different skills that they have obtained over the school year. >> i will be honest with you going to the library when i was a kid during the summer was not on my mind. >> there's a lot of activities that are offered now that are free. open for everyone. we have science experiments and 3-d printing and vinyl cutters. a lot of programs that people are not a wear of. and even if you do not visit the library, get your library card, we have a lot of download resources available. you can download the latest magazines. books that they want to read, prepare for the trip that they are going to go on during the summer. on so it's a great resource for people and it has changed a lot. >> you mentioned the summer reading challenge, there's incentives that they are offering or a challenge?

>> it's a challenge and they will win great prize during the summer. we have prizes for children, teens adults. a tablet, they could get gift cards to a lot of the places we shop at. so, it's -- we will have incentives and the san jose earthquakes will be offering particulars to the games. the children discovery museum will have tickets to the museum and the earthquakes will be doing a vip experience, so, teens one lucky teen or child will be able to win an experience to go check them out during their practice. meet the team and they will have their name announced during a game. >> wow, when you are talking about the library system, i guess we always thought because of the evolution of the internet that the libraries would be object is obsalete, that's not the case. >> it's not the case. people still want to read a physical book. the way that a new book smells

and the way the pages feel, it's something that people do fall in love with. and i mean, we do continue to offer a lot of, and promote the online resources but people want the traditional, and you have to give your eyes a break too, i'm on the computer and wow, you have to pick up aing into. >> it's a summer reading challenge at the san jose public library. 20 minutes a day during the summer. thank you so much, we will see you on the telemundo side on to talk about the same thing in spanish. >> yes, i will.

san jose has a knew store in the area, it's called restore, it's by habitat for humanity. we've rob, who runs a store for habitat humanity. welcome to the show. >> thanks for having us. >> you have been ruping the store for a year and a half nourks tell us about it. it's a store where people donate

goods that are reuseable for home improvements. >> whoever wants to doe that it, we accept it. we fund raise to build the homes here. last year we built three to four homes. it's just a great cause. >> here is one of the homes here. you are busy. when did you decide to get involved with something like this. obviously, there's a heart felt rewarding feeling knowing that you are helping somebody in need. >> yeah, habitat has a great reputation. and you know, i had the opportunity to get involved. a couple of years ago and it has been a lot of fun and habitat brings people together and everyone is there for a common purpose. so, you know, as a result, it's a good time and we all accomplish something positive. >> rob, anybody can donate to the restore? who can go in and purchase

items? >> the general be. you can just be yourself. come in, we sell furniture, new and used building material, and doors and windows and they do upgrades to the home. >> this is basically, i mean, it's material that was donated to y'all and you sell it back at 50% to 70% off in. >> yes. >> you will be running the store soon, you are getting ready to do the ribbon cutting? >> we are excited about the new store. it's 15,000 square feet. >> where? >> san jose, it's near where los plumas hits king. >> near the fire station. >> yes, right near the fire station. so we areally really, really excited about that. it's a beautiful new facility that houses three tenants. there's going to be a habitat for humanity store.

and there's another nonprofit called prospect silicone valley. and it partners with clean tech aunt practice noors. >> talk about the importance of folks to donate their appliances, rob, this is going to families who really need to help and are getting for lack of better material a brand new home with the donations. >> that's correct. that's correct. the donations are important. that is how we fund raise for major donors. it's important to continue to accept doe naetions and receive them from individuals and who ever is contributing to the cause. >> what a concept to have a store. these are materials that your volunteers could use to build the homes. you realize there's probable folks in the silicone valley that cannot afford to do upgrades and what not, this is a

chance to get it at a reduced price. >> that is the nice thing, the people can afford and obtain things they normally could not pay for. >> how does that feel when you see the people coming and bettering their homes and family's lives because of the work you are doing so? >> it's a great feeling. we are helping them and they are supporting people who need the help. >> ta >> talk about the difference in the quality of the materials from your store and the home depot? >> we get a lot of new thi-- we lot of things that are donated new from stores. you would be surprised with how high quality some of the items that we sell are. it really impresses people. and i really encourage you to come down and check it out. >> i will, as i mentioned, how

naive i appeam. i have never heard of the restore. when you think of doing a home remodel. and you have a family barely getting by and they need a new stove or fridge. this is the place to get it, the restore. >> it's called the restore, there's a couple of them in san jose, a couple will open up near the fire station. any final thoughts on your restore? >> thank you so much for having us. been a pleasure being on the show and we encourage everyone to come out to our grand opening which is on may 31st, 9:00 on saturday. >> take a home with you. >> and habitat has tons of material that is usually sent to the landfill, it's a great cause, when you donate, we are keeping the the landfills low

>> they are one option for the children during the summer, we are talking about the ymca, especially over in the east valley. we have the program directors there at the y with us. welcome to the show. we talked about the library, should we go to the library or the y during the summer? >> do both. we can collaborate. i know one of the things we highlight, in our summer programs we are focusing on literacy and reading. so we want to kind of keep the learning going over the sner. along with making it fun. our summer day camps, we offer camp experience for grades k-9.

they come in and travel once a week, they get a chance to swim, they get a chance to rock climate our ymca and make new friends and create new experiences. >> what is this forward thinking that phobias are thinking ahead of what our children are doing during the summer these options were not there when i was growing up, and someone said, this is what we need to do. >> absolutely. i agree, i had nowhere where to go as a child. but now we can participate in the volunteer program. we campaign every year and fund raise in the community to fund raise so we can scholarship kids into the summer day camp program. >> for those that cannot afford. >> yes. and we provide the help and collaborate with another grant to provide summer food for the children. they don't have to pack a lunch. they can come and enjoy the experience and eat for free as well. >> that is another issue with the children during the summer. where are they going to get the

food that they normally get at school. brian, your role at the y and your work with the children? >> yes, so i oversee our after school programming. most people think of the y and they do not realize we do so much. they think itswim and gym, but will work on the food portion and offer the things different for the kids. we give out 1.2 invested until community. i was going to school at san diego state and i needed a job, so we hire college students that come in, the kids can see us and see the staff as role models and say, hey, i can go to college too and work at the y. >> it's a social endeavor that you are all undertaking as well. talk about the exact you feel you are having with the kids that are coming in who may be in some other time might be staying at home as latch key kids. >> absolutely.

one of our goals is for healthy living and social development and social responsibility. and it really tied it in to the programs. we focus in on maging sure that the kids are active. and keep them active. i think the literacy piece will be big this summer. we will tie it in to the summer program and summer learning and then of course, being socially responsible. and doing the big piece in our teen programs that we are highlights what it is to be socially active and what service learning is within the community. >> some people may say, come on, parents are forcing the kids to go to the why and go here or go there. i get the sense that the kids are anxious and excited to go. >> it's known that with our staff, they spend more time with the kids than their own families. i mean, they go to school and they shally, if we do not have our after school program, they go home and the parents come home and there's no real family time. they try to tie it in by having family events and inviting the  families to be a part of it.

it's building the kmupt and offering something that the kids would not normally have. >> for those who may have had doubts, why are we opening up a ymca in the east valley, i think you answered the question with the amount of foot traffic you have gotten there at the y? >> we have got the parking lot fully packed every day. we have members coming in to do group exercise, we have a big group during kids classes. it's a big popular class, and some lessons you have sports class where we focus on sports. i mean, soccer, basketball, and flag football and tee ball this summer as well. >> all right, so what do they enroll in the after school program and when can they enroll in the summer programs? >> we are doing preregistration right now. i want to let angela answer about the summer. >> spots are filling up, we are
