elli elli elliot rodger. >> the devastating events have left their mark on a number of bay area communities and bob redell outside lynbrook high school and christie smith in fremont where the mother of one of the victims is getting ready to leave for southern california this morning. good morning. >> good morning, scott. we spoke with a family friend of weihan wang tearful and distraught over what happened. she immigrate would the family from china to the united states ten years ago and at this point authorities say it's unclear whether the 20-year-old was a roommate to elliot rodger or just a visitor. he was one of three young men stabbed to death in rodger's apartment. part of rodger's deadly shooting spree. she held back tears as she talked about wang who she says

was a graduate. in china there is a one-child policy. he was the center of the family. >> they are really sad? >> yeah. definitely. only one kid, only one son. >> now she worries about sending her own child to college next year who is a 16-year-old. she says weihan wang was a computer science major and the family is headed down to santa barbara this morning. reporting live in fremont, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. bob redell is in san jose, where one of the victims went to school. good morning, bob. >> the school district cannot confirm that cheng yuan hong graduated here in 2012, but they will still have counselors here on campus tomorrow when the students return from the holiday in case there is someone here who knew them and need someone to talk to.

hong was 20 years old and a roommate of elliot rodger the man who stabbed him to death over the weekend. while living here in the bay area he volunteered at the rainbow chinese school and this was before he headed off to uc santa barbara. which back in mid-january rodger accused hong and rodger made a citizen's arrest. rodger also murdered another roommate george chen. he attended lynland high in san jose. he was very respectful and kind so much so he would pick up the mail and paper for one of his elderly neighbors whenever he was back in town for a visit. bob redell q"today in the bay." a total of seven victims after killing his house mates

elliot rodger drove through the streets to a sorority house and pounded on the house and no one answered and he shot and killed two women outside. veronika weiss and catherine cooper. he shot into the market killing christopher michaels-martinez. he could hit anyone with his car that he could see spraying bullets as he went. 13 other people were injured including a uc santa barbara student. we're hearing from the man who lived in the same building as elliot rodger and the three vict victims. he had this message for families of victims. >> seriously, i want the pearens to know that their kids did not do anything wrong. >> tomorrow will be a day of mourning and reflection on the uc santa barbara campus. there will be a memorial at the

school stadium tomorrow afternoon and classes are cancled for the day. members of the community are already working on a memorial wall to honor the students' killed. we will have continuing coverage of the deadly attack. our crews will have a live report from the area during our news at 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 tonight. as always get the most up to date information on our website, nbcbayarea.com. officials looking for the station master that disappeared after a passenger train collided with a freight train in india. happened in the uttar pradesh state. the passenger train plow under to a fright train that was sitting on the tracks near the railway station and 40 people have been killed. 100 others hurt. the cause of the crash under investigation. here at home, police across the bay area looking for drunk drivers trying to get a lot of them off the bay area roadways. they set up a number of dui checkpoints across the bay area.

officers in san mateo county made 19 arrests in the past two nights. a total of 147 people in the bay area have been arrested and over 800 statewide. officers say expect to see drunk driving checkpoints pop up throughout the day. today is certain lly memori day a number of ceremonies honoring our fallen soldiers today. in milpitas a special service at veterans flag plaza. a presentation of colors and a 21-gun salute. that starts at 9:00. flags waving, thanks to local boy scouts who placed them there. little ways away, a special memorial day ceremony with a special tribute to vietnam soldiers. the event starts at 10:30 this morning at the main post parade ground. this afternoon, the vta will hold its own tribute, light rail and buses in santa clara county will stop running for one minute and a moment of silence that happens at 3:00 today. in addition to attending

memorial day celebrations, thousands of people will head to beaches today. this is what crown beach in alameda looked like. people out enjoying the sun and the breeze. for a look at how nice it will be at beaches, let's look at anthony slaughter. good morning. >> good morning. going to be another beautiful day and not as warm as it was yesterday and saturday, but, nonetheless, you have the day off, hit the beach. right now waking up to crystal clear conditions. you can see from every vantage point south bay, mince alooking francisco for fog-free conditions. here are your numbers. temps back into the 80s for our inland valleys for places like the east bay and livermore and even san jose close to that, as well. north bay see some of our warmest weather close to 90 degrees in places like santa rosa and today down to ocean beach right at 70 degrees. very comfortable and cooler weather headed our way and maybe just a chance of a few

you of president obama landing at andrews air force base less than an hour ago. returning to the u.s. after a surprise visit with american troops in afghanistan. during the four-hour stop, the president pledged that america's war on afghanistan will come to a responsible end. he also said a signed bilateral security agreement would clear the way for a limited military presence in afghanistan beyond 2014. this was president obama's fourth visit to afghanistan as president. well, later this morning the president will visit arlington national cemetery in the tomb of the unknown. the president will lay a wreath at the tomb to honor all the missing and unknown service members who gave their lives for this country. this is a live look. the president expected to visit the tomb around 8:00 our time and followed by a remembrance ceremony in arlington national cemetery. such a solemn place there.

the white house not commenting on an article that accuses it of accidentally outing a top cia officer in afghanistan exposing its cover. "washington post" article says the cia top officer in kabul among the people accompanying president obama during the surprise visit to the troops. his name is included on a list given to the press, including foreign media. the white house quickly revised the list taking the name off and "the post" would not list the name which wants to protect the officer and his family. valerie plame's name was exposed in 2003 an effort to discredit her husband. pope francis has just finished his three-day trip to the mideast by visiting some of the holiest sites for the jewish faith. earlier today, pope francis prayed at jerusalem's western wall by honoring jews killed in the holocaust.

the pope followed tradition and left a note in one of the cracked walls. thailand's king has just appointed the head of its military to run the nation after the military seized power last week during a press conference the general said the military take over wasn't done for the army's benefit. the general also said he had to act after six months of increasingly violent confrontation between supporters of the now ousted government and demonstrators struggling to overthrow it. since the takeover, limit anti-government protests by detaining figures who might play leadership roles. anti-gumovernment protester facing treason were actually released today. the men who led the protest in bangkok against the former prime minister's government starting last fall was released from army custody. he and 12 associates face

charges related to the protests, but were all released on bail. the newly appointed military leader said the army would restore order after months of deadly demonstration. officials in malaysia will release raw data from the search of the missing plane tomorrow. the transport minister made that -- families of those who disappeared with the plane in march have been demanding the raw data to be made sublic so they can pursue independent investigations. i certainly hope you have the day off today. but, christina does, but anthony does not. >> yeah, she works really hard. >> oh, she does. >> marathon of a show. we wake up at 4:00 and get off at noon. >> tell me about it. >> hopefully get the time off. talk to the boss? microclimate forecast looking like for today. look at our sky camera network and this is really beautiful this morning in san jose, crystal clear and we don't have any fog to report, nonetheless, even at the coastline. another beautiful day coming

yo way if you do have that day off, yeah, go ahead and take advantage of it. hit the beach and maybe sit out at the pool. it is going to be nice. sky cameras from the north bay even to the east bay and foster city, a really nice shot of the moon. i don't know what planet this is or which star, but you can really make out crystal clear right there. pretty remarkable. not every day you can see that here in the bay area. back into the 70s and 80s and inland thaths that's where we'll see the warmest weather and east bay and south bay, mid-80s. area of high pressure on top of us all weekend long and what that means is our storm door getting closer and that also means the onshore wind starts to reinforce and that's what we're starting to look at. winds in san francisco up to 10 to 15 miles per hour. calm winds and even livermore and san jose, winds barely moving. that onshore wind all day long

inundate the bay area and expect a marine layer to develop in san francisco. tomorrow morning we will wake up to a little bit of fog at the coast. for today, microclimate and see lots of sunshine in every location and san jose today at 83 and saratoga 85 and palo alto up there at 81 and the marina district only at 68 and the embarcadero right at 70 and that's the same for ocean beach if you're headed out there, as well. north bay napa 84 and oakland at 76 and pleasanton today at 86 degrees. now, this warm weather does stick around but all relative. tomorrow we talk about temperatures in the 70s and still very comfortable. wednesday, thursday, friday. temperatures go up just a little bit and that leaves us by saturday tracking another system that's going to be hugging the coastline. you can see this is saturday as we move into the upcoming weekend and lots of fog and cloud cover at the immediate coast. and a system traveling to our

north. maybe 50 miles south, we could be looking at a better chance of rain, but you could see the commuco computer model picking up right now. at this point, a few hundredths of an inch but doesn't look like that likely. enjoy the next few days, nice and sunny. names may be removed from california's sex offender registry. the sex offender management board asking the state legislature to only require high-risk offenders like kidnappers and violent sexual predators stay on the registry for life. the board says the list is simply grown too big with almost 100,000 sex offenders making it difficult to figure out who actually poses a significant risk. the board is recommending some people be removed from the registry after 10 to 20 years. police in southern california looking for teens to target military families over the weekend breaking into at least 12 cars. families in the military housing

community in bay view hills in san diego woke up yesterday morning to find their cars broken into and glove boxes open. thieves rummage through more than a dozen cars and a number of streets. at least two victims say they took their garage door openers. one man says the thieves chose the perfect time to strike. >> first, like i said, they pick the perfect time. we're relaxed and everyone else in this neighborhood is relaxed. >> see this neighborhood as an easy target because of the lack of security presence and also because they know that military folks have an income and they, obviously, have stuff that is worthy of stealing. >> so far police not releasing any details about the suspects in order to maintain the security of the investigation. the girl scouts and several other popular companies are fighting liquid nicotine makers claiming the companies are using their names to sell an addictive drug. some makers of liquid nicotine are using names like thin mint,

tootsy rolls, they have sent cease and assist letters to those e-cigarette companies claiming they're violating their trademarks. five people are safe an an unusual boating accident. a ship was traveling from monterey to half moon bay when it hit a whale saturday afternoon. the engine died and the ship started taking on water. five people onboard jumped ship swimming to nearby rocks where they called 911. luckily no one was hurt and it appears the whale was not hurt either. speaking of boats, check this one out. more than a dozen people taking place in the regatta in key west. teams could only use pliwood and a pair of 2 by 4s and duct tape and fasteners to create their craft. some better than others. a number of prizes were handed out, most creative design, best

shot at making the major league roster and he's really there to mentor the minor league hitters. he will coach full time and play part-time. he says he wants to give something back to the game he loves. he hasn't played in the majors since 2011. the 12-time all-star was suspended late in his career. the president of the washington redskins is inviting senate majority leader harry reid to a game. in response to a letter signed by 50 u.s. senators including reid asking the nfl to demand the redskins change the name. in the letter, reid, to reid the redskins president says, "i hope you'll attend one of our home game wheres you will witness first hand that the washington redskins are a positive, unifying force for our community in a city and a region that's divided on so many levels." the letter defends the redskins

killed at the university campus. all three from the bay area. >> bob redell at lynbrook high school where one of the victims went to school and we start with christie smith. >> good morning to you. that's exactly right. we spoke with a family friend of weihan wang. very upset and very emotional about this whole thing. she says he was the family's only child and, of course, they're having a very hard time wrapping their heads around what happened to their 20-year-old son. authorities say it's unclear if he was actually a roommate of elliot rodger or a visitor to his apartment but one of the three young men stabbed to death in that apartment. part of rodger's deadly rampage and all the uc santa barbara students. wang graduated from fremont christian high school and was the type of kid who seemed to get along with everyone.

of elliot rodger the man who stabbed him to death over the weekend. while living here in the bay area he volunteered as a teaching assistant. what is noteworthy is that back in mid-january rodger accused hong of stealing three candles. hong was charged with petty theft, which he pled guilty to. rodger also murdered another roommate. his name george chen seen here in a photo from his facebook page. he was 19 years old. neighbors tell us that this man, chen, was very respectful, very kind. so much so that he would pick up the mail and the paper for an elderly man who lived in his neighborhood whenever he was back in town for vaset. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." a suspect in a deadly rampage and investigators say

22-year-old elliot rodger wanted revenge and retribution for what he believed was a lifetime of isolation. he detailed his plans and writings called my twisted world. and e-mailed a 100-page manifesto to his parents and uploaded a video to youtube just minutes before the shooting. >> tomorrow is a day of retribution. a day in which i will have revenge against humanity. >> the santa barbara sheriff said he was in contact with rodger before the shooting. as for the i.d. froo night attack, it all started at rodger's own home. with three legally purchased handguns and more than 400 rounds of ammunition, he continued his attack. at the sorority house, he couldn't get in but shot three women outside killing two.

he shot and killed one student at a nearby deli and drove up and down the beach front. before a final crash when authorities say he killed himself. 19-year-old veronika weiss and katie cooper. cooper just weeks away from graduation. at a vigil yesterday those who knew her best remember a gentle, young woman who loved to dance. >> i wish i would have said good-bye. i wish i would have told her her dancing was beautiful. i won't forget you, katy. >> and security video from inside the ivy deli and outside in the parking lot as customers scramble to cover as gunfire blasts through the front windows. christopher martinez was killed. his father spoke to him just 45 minutes before he died. >> he was the most warm loving, kind-hearted kid you could ask

for. >> martinez was a sophomore english major with dreams of attending law school. one of the survivors is also from the bay area, as well p. nick is a business major and plays watto polo and graduated from san ramon high school in danville and was in santa barbara visiting a friend when the suspect hit him with his car. the impact broke both of his legs. this morning his family is in santa barbara with him and they say they've seen an outpouring of support from the community we will certainly continue to follow the investigation into the deadly attack and live reports throughout the morning and any time we're not on air, you can go to our website, nbcb nbcbayarea for the very latest. 5:36 and time to check the forecast. christina is off this morning, probably sleeping in right now. let's check in with anthony slaughter and he has a look at the day's events and a lot of people are off today.

>> yeah, another beautiful day and temperatures today are going to be a little bit cooler because of that ocean breeze but, overall, talking about plenty of sunshine and see that from our sky camera network from the south bay to the peninsula, east bay, san francisco and even the north bay crystal clear right now and what a beautiful way to start your memorial day and see from our foster city cam, not a cloud in the sky. temperatures in the 50s and later on this afternoon headed to see a good mix of 70s and 80s from san francisco right at 70 to close to 90 degrees in the north bay. that is one of our warmest and mid-80s for the south bay and plenty of sunshine all day long. onshore winds right now continuing to keep at least that cool ocean air in place. this is what's going to be the determining factor from getting fog tomorrow morning. onshore wind today and tomorrow morning definitely expect to see a little bit of fog at the coastline and cooler temperatures headed our way for tomorrow. while it feels like summer, cooler for tomorrow. get a look at your microclimate

forecast and 85 in saratoga and belmont 81, as well. san francisco right downtown the embarcadero and also get right close to 70. napa 84 today and walnut creek you're at 83 and livermore 85 degrees and pleasanton at 86. very summer-like for today. temperatures do cool off and take a look at what will happen over the next couple days. back into the 70s and we kind of just hang out near 80 degrees for wednesday, thursday and friday, you notice by friday, temperatures come down even more because that's the computer model getting a better grip on what's headed our way. friday into saturday, another system traveling to our north. this could offer the potential for some showers. right now the best bet is saturday night inthe north bay and across parts of the sierra. computer model still not in agreement and each one a better thought on what is going to happen. on sunday doing any traveling to

>> good morning, everyone. the president made this whirl wind trip around the world and fourth time he has done it, but not in the last two years to visit the troops in afghanistan, the president said he wanted to thank them personally. >> i'm here on a single mission and that is to thank you for your extraordinary service. >> reporter: he was on the ground just four hours and only spoke to harmid karzai by phone after taking off from baggram base. >> america's war in afghanistan will come to a responsible end. >> reporter: but we still don't know how many will stay. it could be as many as 10,000. the president told karzai they'll talk again before he announces that publicly. that could come wednesday when mr. obama godelivers the comme e commencement speech at west point. right now focused on making sure the soldiers can be seen at v.a.

professional negligence. in addition, prosecutors believe the ferry could have sank buzz not enough money was spent on safety that left 300 people dead or missing. millions of voters in egypt are casting their ballots to vote for a new president. the election comes nearly a year after the military ousted islamist mohamed morsi. morsi the country's first freely elected president. he is expected to win the race. he has been the most powerful figure in egypt over the past ten months voting, ends tomorrow. in the meantime, polls closed in ukraine and exit polls show billionaire claimed the presidency was absolute majority and the tycoon took more than 55% of the vote according to preliminary results that put him well ahead of the former prime minister. if the results are confirmed tomorrow, there will be no need

for a runoff vote next month. he said his first priority to end the war and chaos in ukraine's east. this morning, olympian turned accused murderer oscar pistorius undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. arrived earlier today and last week a judge ordered the athlete be observed by a panel of mental health experts for 30 days. this after a psychiatrist testified pistorius had an anxiety disorder that could have contributed him to shooting and killing his girlfriend last year. pistorius is getting outpatient treatment. his murder trial will pick back up at the end of the june. right now rescue crews searching for three missing people after a massive mudslide struck near grand junction, colorado. believed to be two miles long and four miles long and up to 250 feet deep. one of the witnesses who reported the slide reported hearing a noise that sounded like a freight train. hit a remote area near the town

of colborn last night 40 miles east of grand junction city. no reports of any damage. heavy rainfall likely contributed to that big slide. firefighters in alaska struggling to gain the upper hand on that massive wildfire moving through the rugged forest of the state's peninsula south of anchorage. fire officials say state troopers now going door-to-door telling people to leave their homes. about 1,000 homes have been evacuated. the fire has burned nearly 250 square miles and 30% contained. so far no one has been hurt and cause still under investigation. meanwhile in arizona, slide rock state park remains closed this morning because of the wildfire. firefighters say they are making some progress. 25% contained up from 5% on saturday. preevacuation warnings for more than 3,000 people expected to be lifted today. the fires burned over 20 square miles. this is very close to sedona. the exact cause has not been

weatherman slaughter, good advice. san francisco waking up to clear skies and look at this beautiful sunrise. oh, there must be a giants game. yes, there is one today. so, beautiful conditions for this. and any where else if you're planning to take outdoor activity. 84 in the south bay. 85 in the east bay and close to 90 today in the north bay. going to be a scorcher of a day across wine country. as we head through the next couple of days and area of high pressure positioned right on top of us and this thing moves south and ask for the onshore wind to return and that will cool us as we head through the day tomorrow. we're talking about mid-80s. but a hurricane brewing. yes, our first hurricane of pacific season and this is hurricane amanda. a category 4 with winds up to 140 miles per hour. so, very strong. this thing will weaken over the next couple days and look at its trajectory, headed back towards land. if you're making plans to head down towards southern california
