6:17 am
kind of the envy of the nation as christina likes to call it. if you have family or friends coming in town, this is really a lovely day. if you're doing any traveling across the state, down into southern california looking good, as well. no chance of showers anywhere on our radar. you notice as you look, right now temperatures in the 50s for the most part santa rosa 52 and mountain view at 57 and 47 in santa cruz and hard to believe they're close to 80 later on this afternoon. another beautiful day coming in every regard. look outside from our live sky camera network and clearer skies in the peninsula and even from our emeryville cam and at the coastline san francisco crystal clear right now. you'll notice the temperatures from 70s in sf and close to 90 in the north bay and every city in between will enjoy lots of sunshine all the way from the time now to the time the sun goes down later on this evening. high pressure is in control of our weather here and you can see on the surface map, starting to push a little further south and those onshore winds are with us this morning and we don't have
6:18 am
any moisture out across the ocean, at least as the upper levels so that fog that typically moves in with that onshore breeze just hasn't had a chance to develop. but tomorrow a different scenario. we will be waking up to fog at the coastline and here are your microclimate temperatures for today. san jose, 83 degrees for your afternoon and morgan hill, you'll get 86 and palo alto 81 and you'll notice in san francisco the closer you get to the water, that is supposed to be cooler at 68 in the marina district and 70 right at ocean beach. napa 84 degrees and even pleasanton very pleasant, if you will, at 86 degrees. again, a little warm for this time of year. you know, our average high and most of our inland cities the mid-70s and about ten degrees above that for today. you may have heard us talk about it and the past weekend, a hurricane brewing across the pacific. this is hurricane amanda category 4 with sustained winds up to 140 miles per hour. you'll notice, though, as we put this into motion it will weaken
6:19 am
considerably down to a tropical depression and really just a few lingering showers and cloud cover. this, though, is going to move up towards the baja of california and could even impact l.a.'s weather and san diego where you heard all about the wildfires of the past couple weeks with really good news coming for folks there. unfortunately, not for us. we're not going to see any showers from that. as we move through this upcoming weekend, our temperatures do drop considerably for tomorrow back into the 70s and enjoy today if you have it off. tomorrow you may need to wake up with a light jacket and as we head through the rest of the week, wednesday, thursday, friday not too hot or too cold and temperatures do start to fall off and that's because another system is headed your way. increase the fog for friday and saturday and saturday night into sunday we'll look at a chance for showers and at this point the best bet across the north bay and points over towards the sierra and it is about six to seven days away. things can really change drastically as this system moves about 20 to 30 miles west.
6:20 am
you could be looking at showers as it moves north and east and it could get nothing. something we watch all week, of course, we desperately need the rain. at this point 20% chance and with all the lottery winners we have across the bay area, we might get some showers. >> you never know. what we really need is a down pour. police out in force, once again, today. taking drunk drivers off the roads. all on this memorial day weekend where law enforcement agencies set up dui checkpoints across the bay area. officers in san mateo county say they've already made 19 arrests in the past two nights. chp says the total of 147 people in the bay area have been arrested and over 800 statewide. officers say expect to see drunk driving checkpoints pop up throughout the day. in the north bay, a man who got pulled over by a chp officer ended up saving that officer's life. happened yesterday morning on northbound 101 in santa rosa.
6:21 am
you could see the damage there. a chp officer in the middle of a traffic stop and another driver drifts to the right of the road and smack right into the chp car. the man who had been pulled over stepped in to help. >> i hear a big, loud crash and i get slammed and i kind of blacked out and i wake up and i see this police officer and the car in the middle of the freeway and car over here and i had my kids shaken up and they seem fine and i get out and i see the police officer stuck in the car on the door and couldn't get out. so, i saw the gas and freaked out. >> now, eric who asked us to just use his first name say he and the driver of the car that crashed pulled the chp officer to safety. eric said that driver told him he had fallen asleep at the wheel. authorities say the officer has two broken legs but will be okay. not clear if the driver who caused the crash will face charges. >> that's pretty amazing. 6:21 right now. still ahead on "today in the bay" stolen property at a and t

rage and retaliation this morning. a personal vendetta innear the uc santa barbara campus. mike tiebbi joins us and this was a disturbed young man but was anybody in a position to stop him before it was too late? >> that is the key question. were there hints and were there legal reasons that anyone, specifically law enforcement, might have been able to stop them ahead of time. this was a young man who was long troubled. he said he was thinking about a killing spree for five years back when he was 17 years old he started thinking about it and planning for it, too. he said that in a 140-page manifesto that he circulated along with the youtube video we've all seen by now. here's what happened a month before. april 30th his parents were concerned because in his postings on social media and on video blogs he was talking about how despondent and miserable he was and not threatening anybody
6:31 am
specifically but so up setting that his parents decided to call a mental health therapist and called the police and made a requi visit, as they're required to do. as he later wrote, he said i was tact tactful, i was polite, he was worried they would find the three guns he legally bought. the police left and they never came back. he wrote in that manifesto and a disturbing document to read but very revealing after he pulled off his so-called day of retribution people would see moome as the god that i am and speak about his lonely, celibate life and how he had to do something about it. he concluded saying i am not of a human race, humanity has already rejected me. that manifesto circulated just hour bfrz he went on his spree killing seven, killing himself, hurting 13.

trying to find out if there's anything in this person's history besides that one visit that might have alerted somebody he had to be stopped beforehand. of course, that didn't happen. laura, scott. >> just tragic all the way around. i mean his own parents raising a red flag as you had mentioned there. >> sure. >> also, he bought all the weapons legally. >> he did. he bought all the weapons legally. i'm not sure about that part of it because the lawyer for the family told us last saturday hours after this happened that he had been diagnosed with asperger's. that was one description. the other that he was diagnosed with something on the autism spectrum. i don't know what that means, if that's a formal diagnosis is that reportable or required to be reported. apparently it was not reported if there was a requirement at all. under california law without an indication or any record from the police that this person an individual is a danger to himself or others. immediate danger. nothing they can do to check him out and let him go. let him go and had not made the

threats in the public way yet. and less than 30 days liter he did what he did last thursday night. >> sadly here we are and so many families in mourning. thank you very much. well, this video shows more of the panic during the attack. this is from keep in my heart. they hear the gunshots and they run back and they take cover. we will continue our coverage with new details about the three young men who died in the rampage is coming up in 15 minutes. also updating our website constantly. go to our home page for the very latest updates and information. let's check your forecast this morning and give you a live look outside at san francisco. what a beautiful day, if you could see alcatraz that clearly. >> you can see alcatraz this early this morning because we had high pressure in control, that sinking air doesn't allow
6:34 am
for any clouds to form and that's what we're looking at this morning and, however, tomorrow morning a different story. looking at fog at the coastline and temperatures are running kind of warm in san francisco. 56 degrees right now, but they get down into santa cruz and stepping out and you need a jacket. 47 there. hard to believe santa cruz is going to be one of our warmest spots today, close to 80 degrees in santa cruz. so, let's get you into the forecast for the rest of the day. you notice lots of sunshine from the coast and san francisco at 70, north bay close to 90 and the south bay, peninsula and the east bay, you'll notice a good mix of low to mid-80s with plenty of sunshine. so, if you had a chance to get outside and enjoy this weekend, it was beautiful. another nice day headed our way and temperatures today coming down a little bit at the beaches. not going to be as warm, santa cruz the exception up to 80 but everywhere else, 70 to 78 degrees and do it for the beaches today and a small craft advisory and always have that in place here across the bay area and take it easy if you are going to be boating on some of the area waters.
6:35 am
let's get you to the rest of the microclimate forecast today. morgan hill at 86 and palo alto 81 later this afternoon and san mateo 82 degrees and san francisco a little cooler than where we were yesterday back in the mid-70s and mid-60s that marina district and 68. north bay, one of our warmest locations. santa rosa close to 90 degrees later on this afternoon and napa up to 84 and sausalito maybe doing a stroll across the ocean front. 71 degrees there and walnut creek at 83 and over towards the tri-valley good mix of upper 80s. wouldn't be surprised if some places like pleasanton even over towards danville get up close to the mid-80s. now the next five days, temperatures do cool. the warmest of the week. even in san francisco you notice the coast and inland as we move throughout the week, temperatures do cool a little bit, in fact, by tomorrow, a few
6:36 am
degrees cooler and onshore wind would mean fog in san francisco for tomorrow morning and that fog will be with us each and every morning all the way through friday and you notice by friday the big drop from today to friday and talking about a ten-degree difference in some locations and that means the chance as another area of low pressure gets close to us with some showers. you notice the fog cloud cover right up against the coastline and a system to our north that passes through. unfortunately, not the brunt of the system, but as it moves overhead, a few spotty showers as the system tries to get it back together. right now the chance about 20% or less. you know what, we desperately need some rain and this once we get to the weekend the last full month to actually make up for any deficit for that water year because that, again, starts july 1st. so, brand-new water year and brand-new forecast and hopefully this next water year will get more rain than we got this past water year. >> fair enough. it's 5:36. accused murderer oscar pistorius
