and good morning to you. i'm richard lui. the nigerian military claiming to have found the location of where nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls are being held. it's now seven weeks after they were taken by militants. here's nigeria's defense chief. >> the good news, we know where they are, but we cannot tell you. we cannot tell you. just leave us alone. we are working. we will get the girls back. >> the defense official refused to elaborate on where thewere allegedly found. he says nigeria will not use force to try to rescue them, saying a raid could be dangerous and threaten the girls' lives. senior u.s. defense officials say they cannot confirm the claims, adding we still don't know where the girls are. there was severe weather across the country this memorial day. a scary sight in watford city, north dakota. that's where at least one

tornado was reported as severe storms moved over the midwest monday evening. the twiser severely damaged an oil kacamp. damaging property and downing power lines. then you see the circulation over sterling city, texas, in this time lapse. violent winds, also hail. in colorado, late-season snow falling there across portions of the rockies in full force. folks out there snowboarding and skiing. nbc philadelphia meteorologist britney schiff will join us with more on that. tfirefighters in alaska are hoping for rain. the blaze has already spread to about 250 square miles. that's larger than the city of chicago. about 1,000 homes have been evacuated south of anchorage. at this point the blaze is about 30% contained thanks to more than 60 firefighters on the scene.

pope francis is planning a meeting with victims of sexual abuse. after wrapping up a tour of the middle east, the pope announced plans while on the plane back to ita italy. pope francis says the meeting comes as part of a zero-tolerance plan for anyone in the catholic church who has abused children. early next month the pope will meet with eight victims and cardinal o'malley in boston who is head of the commission for the protection of minors. memorials and vigils are taking place in california following a deadly rampage near the university of california-santa barbara. as we learn more, many are asking a painful question, could something have been done to prevent that attack? here's nbc's mike taibbi. >> reporter: a mother and father embraced in anguish and tears. >> i just think to god, why not take me and instead my son? >> reporter: their son was among the first victims of the rampage, leaving the wangs to prepare for the saddest trip any parents could make, and leaving

a whole college community in mourning. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: it was a long-planned outburst of murderous intent and sta caughtco gunfire by the alleged killer. in a matter of minutes, he had taken the lives of six uc-santa barbara students, his three roommates, two young women, katie cooper and veronica weiss. and finally christopher martinez. martinez's father told us he hopes to meet with another grieving parent, elliott rogers' father, peter. >> what i would hope is that we can come together. you know, he's made -- he said i want to work to try to prevent this from happening again. that's our common ground. >> reporter: in the continuing investigation, a warrant was served on at least one of the three stores where roger legally purchased his guns. and the sheriff's department is reexamining how roger was able to fool trained deputies during an april 30th check on his well-being triggered about his parents' concerns.

this thing is huge. rescue teams said monday they found no sign of the missing men. the unstable search area, hampering their empts there. authorities believe recent rain triggered the slide. nbc philadelphia meteorologist britney shipp joins us now. we've been talking about the northwest mudslide, but that one is tremendously large. >> that is impressive to see. the good news is at least we'll see a dry pattern over the west coast as we head into at least the next few days here. here's a closer look at the satellite/radar shot. quiet conditions, dry and very warm. just a few scattered showers for the seattle area. a closer look at the temperatures. take a look at las vegas. already at 85. 81 in phoenix. 65 in los angeles. we're still going to see the triple digits again in phoenix. we won't get out of the triple digits until thursday. but for los angeles today, 79 degrees. 66 in san francisco with just a few clouds. in the northeast or heading there, we are going to see thunderstorms for the next few days and a cold front will drop

and welcome back. naming names. the man who helped edward snowden leak classified documents set to release another bombshell. journalist and author glen greenwald told "the sunday times" he'll publicish names. greenwald believes his revelation will help shape snowden's legacy. he called it the, quote, finishing piece. watch brian williams. his exclusive interview with snowden on wednesday. it was an embarrassing situation for a man in california. fire officials say he tried to break into his estranged wife's house. he tried to do it through the chimney. and then he got stuck. they had to disassemble the chimney piece by piece to get that guy out. the orange county sheriff's department says no criminal charges were filed. this professional eater devouring a 72-ounce steak in record time.
