get close to 15 to 35 miles per hour as we approach this upcoming evening. mike? >> we'll take you out to the bay bridge and give you a live look. the maps on the san francisco side. 101 still fine but the thumbs up means you can drive through the area and traffic flowing into and out of the city looking real good right now. looking at a little slow down. look at all the way over on the right 680 out of su inol and towards pleasanton. check both of those out to confirm with chp nothing going on there. we'll send it back to you. >> we'll continue to check back with you throughout the morning. at 4:31 today is a day of mourning at the santa barbara university. instead thousands are expected to gather on campus this afternoon to reflect and remember the lives of six students murdered in a violent killing spree on friday night.

flags at all ten uc campuses will fly at half staff in solidarity and support of the isla vista community. follows several emotional vigils held last night. at the university of santa cruz a friend of veronika weiss talked about the time she shared with her life-long friend. >> she had this laugh that you could hear from miles away. she was always laughing. >> weiss was 19 years old and while hundreds mourned her death along with the ilcannikillings others. others breathed a sigh of relief that others survived. >> he's a part of me, he's a piece of me. and just really, really grateful

she's alive. >> i have plenty of friends who go and it really hit close to home. i wanted to stand in solidarity with my friends. >> so much pain. similar scene on the ucla campus where hundreds came together lighting candles to remember the victims. in san diego, more than 2,000 students attended a vigil there. tomorrow night berkeley students and alumni are invited to campus for a vigil of their own. the families of the three bay area men are in santa barbara this morning. weihan wang, george chen and 20-year-old cheng yuan hong. hong graduated from lynbrook high school. bob redell is live at the high school. grief counselors will be there this morning as students head back to class. >> you are correct. cheng yuan hong graduated back in 2012, so, you can imagine

quite possible there are students here who knew him, remembered him and could be greatly affected by what happened to him thin isla vista. hong was a 20-year-old engineering student at uc santa barbara. room mates with two of his best friends from the bay area, along with elliot rodger the man who stabbed to death the three room mates. he did have a run-in earlier in the year in january. stealing three candles worth $22 and hong pled guilty to the petty theft. george chen, a computer engineering student at ucsb seen here in pics from his facebook page. he attended leland high and had been a camp counselor at the ymca and a neighbor we spoke with described him as a wonderful boy for taking the time to help out her elderly father. a third roommate,

20-year-oldwork eihan wang, he is from fremont. he and his two previous room mates were really good friends and had dreams of starting a business when they graduated. our station spoke exclusively with his parents who are beyond belief with their grief. >> my son's whole life i'm so proud of him. very nice guy. everybody like him. he is kind of quiet, but nice to everybody. very considerate. nice to mom. >> the three room mates were three weeks away from moving out from elliot rodger in that apartment. they apparently didn't get along with him. he played loud music in the middle of the night and just didn't interact with him. >> bob, thank you. the suspect's family

attorney said he had asberinger syndrome, a form of ought emp. it interferes with the person's ability to communicate and function in social settings. it is the same disorder the gunman at sandy hook elementary had, however, experts stress no correlation between asperger syndrome and violence. but the syndrome can bring a sense of loneliness and isolation. >> sometimes they internalize it meaning they feel bad about themselves and sometimes they externize it and it sounds that that often happens where they want to blame a group of women for not liking them or they want to blame somebody else. >> asperger is very treatable, especially when discovered at an early age. they can manage their symptoms and function at a very high level. mark matthews is in isla vista and will continue our coverage coming up in our next half hour.

any time we're not on air, go to our website for the very latest. 4:36. investigators trying to figure out who opened fire through the window of a car and shot three people in san francisco killing one. shooting happened just before 5:30 yesterday in the city's bay view district. officers went to the intersection of key street and palo avenue after shot spotter technology detected gunfire. police found two people who had been at the scene, a third person was taken to the hospital by a witness. one of them later died. police have not identified any suspects. the fremont man accused of strangling his wife to death is scheduled to make his first court appearance today. investigators say 42-year-old sing tried to run from police after killing his wife. her body was found by a relative on sunday morning but by that him he was already on the run with his passport. detectives were able to track him down to pill pets. the ceo of a popular

networking site. he caused a crash on highway 101 that injured a woman near sfo last august. co-founder of san francisco's based nextdoor.com. the woman who was hurt filed a civil suit saying his unsafe lane change caused her to crash. he did not call the police because he thought others would and because his car never actually hit the woman's vehicle. happening right now dozens of people near yosemite are waking up in a red cross shelter as crews battle a wildfire that more than doubled in size in a day. the fire started yesterday afternoon in miraposa county. cal fire crews say they were ready for that fire and sent helicopters and bulldozers and other resources to fight the fire. the fire started in a house near yosemite national park. the fire is still burning out of control at this hour. turning to our microclimate

forecast this morning, a live look outside at san jose. and san francisco. >> oh, you tease scott mcgrew. >> there we go. there is downtown san jose as we hand it over to bob mayeda. good morning. >> good morning. seeing patches of clouds around the coast and san francisco looking fairly clear and temperatures in the mid-50s and sea breeze off to an early start around the bay area and see those conditions with the winds picking up generally out of the west at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. already this morning in san francisco, notice the wind direction into livermore and fairfield and that early start to the sea breeze will allow our temperatures running a little bit cooler than yesterday. the visibility mild, no problems, but the low clouds this morning maybe a patch or two around half moon bay in terms of affecting your morning commute. mike will keep an eye on the coastal forecast, too. temperatures for the afternoon about five to eight degrees cooler than yesterday. should be close to 78 degrees in

san jose and low 70s around the peninsula and turning windy later on this evening and wind speeds picking up to 35 miles per hour. highs in the upper 70s to low 80s out near pleasanton and livermore. mike? >> speaking of livermore and let's look over here to dublin and same tri-valley area. look at this stream of headlights and moving just fine. traffic tuesday and day after that three-day holiday and looking over here west 580 moves very smoothly and south 680 at 580 where there was a fender bender. two cars involved are off to the shoulder and flashing lights around that interchange is something i'm always tracking. northbound a little blip as you head up towards saratoga and another slow-moving vehicle can skew that data because so few cars in the roadway right now. we're all looking at the transit, as well. roads and rails all move very smoothly for your transit status

at 4:44. new this morning officials in ukraine say they have beaten back pro-russian separatists who tried to take control of the airport. the military launched air strikes after the separatist seized the airport. this morning the pro-russian forces retreated and broke into the homes of civilians and used the civilians as human shields. so far there's no word on any civilians were hurt or killed and insurgents say 30 of his

fellow fighters died in that fighting. happening today, congressman eric swalwell will be in palo alto came after claims that numerous hospitals had wait lists and caused delays in treatments for veterans. the congressman wants to make sure veterans at the v.a. in palo alto are being well taken care of. last week the vet said that v.a. we talked to said they were getting good care. in the meantime, president obama preparing his commencement speech for west point tomorrow where he is expected to lay out what a post-war u.s. military will look like, but it will be hard for him to avoid talking about that v.a. scandal. 26 v.a. hospitals remain under investigation for falsifying records and making vets wait for surgery and disability checks. the president is expected to get a preliminary report on that investigation later this week. speaking of the president, today he will host the fourth annual white house science fair.

100 students with a knack for creativity are taking part in that event. this year's emphasize will be on involving tech and science. also announce plans to train teachers and low-income students in the tech field. won federal funding to help them create a device that could help us understand the way we understand a brain disorder. the team is led from scientists from ucsf awarded a $26 million grant. it will use the money to plant a device in people's brains to record and analyze live electrical signals. the device, in theory, could alter the brain and perhaps train the brain to recover from things like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. controlling your home with a swipe of an iphone a new areport out claims apple is about to unveil new software that connects your gradts to hushold appliances. for that and the rest of the

"financial times" reports apple will unveil plans next week to let your iphone or ipad control all of your home appliances. so, users would be able to do things like automatically turn lights on when they enter their home or set their alarms when they leave. apple is expected to emphasize protections to alleviate consumers' privacy concerns. meanwhile, futures are higher as we come back from the holiday weekend. the marktets are coming off ther best weekend in more than a month. at a new high above the 1,900 mark for the first time. data today on demand for durable goods, home prices and consumer confidence. the dow closing up 63 points on friday to 16606. the nasdaq rising 31 points to 4185. and visa and mastercard are renewing a push for microchip to

numbers drop a good five to eight degrees from yesterday's highs. sea breeze not a lot of low clouds yet. visibility and miles looking pretty good except right around half moon bay around four miles with coastal low clouds and fog and really just hanging out in that location and then as we go through the afternoon, we'll continue to see patches of low clouds out near pacifica with mostly sunny skies inland as our temperatures today look pretty good. valley temperatures 70s to low 80s today. then as we head towards wednesday and thursday, a bump up in our temperatures. you're seeing that there in your seven-day forecast and thursday probably the warmest day for the rest of the week and then things turn interesting as a trough of low pressure drops in on us and temperatures cooling down to the upper 60s and low 70s even for our inland valleys. today 78 degrees in san francisco and 83 in saratoga and mid-70s around the peninsula and san francisco seeing the highs in the mid-60s and north bay about 83 in santa rosa and oakland 70 today and pleasanton

warming up to 83 degrees and 79 with sunshine and winds an issue in the afternoon and evening out of the tri-valley from the north, northwest at 15 to 30 miles per hour. new video to show you this morning of a tornado touching down in north dakota. nine people were hurt when the twister struck an oil workers' camp last night. one of them, we're told, is in critical condition this morning. it happened near watford city not far from the montana border. eight trailers were also destroyed. in colorado the search will resume for three men in what could can be hundreds of feet of mud. this video, in fact, shows that path of destruction four miles long, half a mile wide. the mud is several hundred feet deep in some parts. the slide actually followed two days of heavy rain.

a game with friends turned deadly when an 18-year-old drowned just hours after graduating high school. authorities in georgia say chance westernrner's body was f. they were playing a game where they would sit in the shopping cart and others would push it off the dock and he was actually tied to the cart and it pulled him under. no word on whether any charges will be filed. a 19-year-old man from washington state faces reckless driving charges this morning for causing a bizarre crash near portland. investigators told the man he fainted while holding his breath as he drove through a tunnel. he crashed head on with an suv and both vehicles bounced off tunnel walls. nobody seriously hurt. police still don't know why he was holding his breath, but apparently some people do this as part of a game as they drive through a tunnel. it is 4:51. nigerian officials say they know where hundreds of kidnapped

girls are being kept, but getting them out would be too dangerous. officials would not say where the girls were or how they were found only the girls would be killed in an attempted rescue. thousands of protesters were bussed to a location in the capital where they chanted, bring our girls home. they were taken from their school back in april by a militant group. looking at data from malaysian flight 370 said the new information released does not provide further help determining what happened to the jet. released overnight by the malaysian government following an outcry from family members includes 47 pages and features handshakes between the plane and the satellite exchanges that continued even after the plane disappeared from radar. it backed up theories that the plane flew until it ran out of fuel. unique reward being offered for the return of hunter pence's stolen scooter. look over here, this is
