afternoon. good morning, mark. >> good morning. we're here where instead of class today students will gather here to mourn and reflect the lives of the six that were lost on that rampage on friday. today's vigil following last night's vigils on campus. several of them very emotional. one held outside the sorority house. among the candles and flowers students hugged and cried and talking about catherine cooper and veronika weiss. they were gunned down friday. even though many didn't know the women the students say they felt their loss and wanted to acknowledge it. just down the street, chalked messages of love and solidarity were drawn outside the apartment house where elliot rodger stabbed three students in front of that more flowers and candles and there i met with tyler and film student zach stein. yesterday they started up a t-shirt fund-raising campaign to

help out the students' families. >> i sent 200 invitations and already 800 people in the group and i think we have 100 people who already bought a shirt and that was maybe as of two hour uz go. >> while stein was happy to get the word out about the fund-raising a group of people with signs wanted to push the news media away and blocked televisions and still cameras from the scene saying they wanted to protect the people who were coming to the deli to mourn. a large group, thousands perhaps, expected to gather this afternoon at 4:00. the university is calling it a day of mourning and reflection. reporting from isla vista, mark matthews for "today in the bay." >> so much sorry there, thank you, mark. in a show of sympathy, ucla students and uc santa barbara alumni gathered to honor the victims of the isla vista

tragedy. hundreds of people lit candles and shared stories about the victims that died. tomorrow night students at uc berkeley will hold a vigil of their own. the family of the three bay area men stabbed to death in the suspect's apartment also in santa barbara this morning. bob redell is at lynbrook high school where one of the students graduated. students head back to class for really the first time since this tragedy. >> right after the memorial day weekend holiday, of course, this killing taking place on friday. so, this would be their first time back. good morning to you there, scott. there are students here today who knew him, who remember him and because of that, that's why the district will be having counselors out here today in case the students need someone to talk to. hong was a 20-year-old engineering student at uc santa barbara. room mates with two of his best

friends from the bay area, along with elliot rodger. four of them living in that apartment and rodger being the man who stabbed to death the three other men. hong had a run-in with rodger earlier in the year. he made a citizen arrest on hong for stealing three candles. he pled guilty to petty theft. george chen seen here in a picture from his facebook page and he attended eed leyland hid he was a camp counselor and a neighbor we spoke with yesterday described him as a wonderful, wonderful boy because she helped him, her elderly father with a newspaper and mail and such. you have the third roommate, a 20-year-old cheng weihan wang. they had dreams of starting a business when they finished.

of course, all three of them from our area. the plan was, according to wei's parents they were moving out because they wanted to move on and they weren't apparently getting along with rodger. he played music loudly in the middle of the night and just overall anti-social. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell "today in the bay." >> continuing coverage throughout the morning and go to our website, nbcbayarea.com for the latest details. bay area catholic school teachers are meeting with the diocese about a controversial morality close. now, christie several faculty are refusing to sign the clause. tell us about it. >> good morning to you. that's exactly right. they just have a problem with some of the language and that's why the bishop is going to be meeting with some of the faculty members this afternoon.

specifically, about this morality clause. a handful of teachers have flat out refused to sign it. so, the bishop is going to be meeting with them about the language in this year's contract and also next year. including at least three of them who didn't want to sign it at bishop o'dowd high school in oakland. one teacher said she refused to sign the clause because she didn't agree with it. crossing out words saying people's private lives have no place in an employment contract. the clause covers their lives beyond the school walls referencing conduct in accord with standards but doesn't spell out what it is. some parents asked the diocese to go ahead and hold off until everyone agreed on that language. >> just makes me so sad that good teachers will choose to leave. good teachers will choose not to come. parents and students will choose not to come in the future. >> i can't speak for the bishop in terms of the moratoriums or anything else, but i can make a

practical point which is all but five teachers of the thousands of teachers in the diocese of oakland have returned the signed contract. >> and many of the students have been wearing yellow ribbons supporting their teachers. and in the catholic newspaper, the bishop said that he apologized if the wording was misinterpreted and he's not on a witch hunt and isn't interested in examining teachers' private lives. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. a lawsuit will be filed today on behalf of two city of college students who were hurt in march. here's video of that march 13th protest. you can see the pushing and shoving as students call for the resignation of a special trustee and the reinstatement of the board of trusties. two students injured in a clash with police. six campus police were also hurt that day. today san mateo city

committee planning will figure out what to do with the land that once housed a popular ice rink. the bridgepoint ice rink submitted a new plan. the owner wants to knock the rink down and replace it with one retail store. dozens of community members say the rink should stay because it benefits thousands of local kids. the ice center closed in 2013 and it hasn't opened since. people living in one mountain view neighborhood will ask a city council to force at&t to remove a cell coverage boosting tower. the antenna recently put up on top of a utility pole a few blocks away from los altos high school. they report the box, you can see it here, is less than 12 feet off the ground and people living in the neighborhood are worried students at the high school may be able to climb the pole and turn off the system. at&t says the switch is not locked, but it is illegal to tamper with it. the systems are meant to close gaps in cell coverage.

it's 5:08 right now. meteorologist christina loren took a little time off and we brought in meteorologist rob mayeda up early with us. >> good morning to you. temperatures in the 50s in san jose. 54 degrees and waking up to clear skies and patches of clouds in parts of the bay area this morning including around san francisco where it's 65 degrees and north bay a little chilly. 48 degrees in santa rosa and right now 54 in san jose and around the peninsula temperatures mainly in the low 50s so the jacket just fine for the morning and seeing mid-50s to low 50s right now in san francisco and out towards the east bay. you've got 54 in livermore and 57 in concord and to the north bay the coolest stuff around the bay area right now. temperatures mainly in the upper 40s. hour-by-hour patches of low clouds across the coast and then an all-day sea breeze will drop inland temperatures about five to eight degrees and those winds increasing by 5:00 up to 35

miles per hour around san francisco, once again. just like yesterday, little blustery as we head towards the evening. comfortable around san francisco though windy at times this afternoon and we'll see the highs in the mid-60s. north bay highs near 80 in napa and pleasanton 83 and your only thing weatherwise, perhaps, mike, a little bit of fog returning to the coast. >> all right, rob, that will be a good idea. no big ideas we'll warm pacifica and half moon bay. over here at the bay bridge, looking at a smooth drive as that sun starts to come up. look over here bottom of your screen we saw in the second lane saw flashing light from the tow truck and slowly made its way out of our scene and all lanes are now clear and that's good news. look at the map, the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza and the maze moves very nicely and that is typical on the surface street as folks tend it hit the downtown berkeley area about now. 280 southbound is open and

the dow closing up 63 points on friday to 16606 the nasdaq rising 31 points to 4185. back to you. >> all right, morgan, thank you much. at 5:15, a string of strange weather hitting across the country this morning. at least nine people were hurt, one of them critically after this tornado hit an oil workers' camp in north dakota. it happened a few miles south near the montana border. eight trailers were also destroyed. in houston, texas, flash flooding continues to cause problems for drivers. these cars got stuck in high water while other parts of texas high winds including funnel cloud damaged a lot of buildings. meanwhile, let's check in with rob mayeda who is frin christina. >> the weather a lot more calm. most of the active weather we're seeing east of the rockies right now. in fact, the wide view showing you how things looked to the west of the bay area.

pretty severe line of storms rolling through this morning, but closer to home, the only clouds we're seeing here are the low clouds right near the coast right now. mainly south of pacifica and this is a sign of the cooling that should kick in as we head towards the afternoon. little cooling for the coast and bay today and today our valleys and temperatures drop a good five to eight degrees. right now, nice sunrise in san jose. 54 degrees there and gorgeous view with mainly clear skies and low patches of clouds closer to san francisco and look out to at&t park and the breeze picking up for you and game time forecast coming up after 7:15 at 61 degrees. bundle up as we're heading out to the ballpark and see the winds up to 35 miles per hour later on this afternoon. we could see the wind speeds this morning into livermore and fairfield, a sign the sea breeze is out there this morning and pick up in speedy as we head through the afternoon. on the coast, temperatures cooling there and mostly clear skies inland and that coupled with the sea breeze will make

for our temperatures mostly in the 70s to near 80 for a high for places out towards the tri-valley later on. winds onshore for now briefly as we head towards the middle part of the week and seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. temperatures climb five to six degrees and then for the weekend a deep trough of low pressure and that will reinforce the onshore winds and the cooler air so the temperatures in the seven-day forecast really dropping off as we head towards next weekend. memorial day weekend we just saw and 80s and 90s and next weekend we're talking upper 60s to 70s for highs in our inland valleys. today the wind is a bit of a good story when it comes to air quality. 78 degrees and the winds keeping our ground level pollution and ground level ozone to a minimum. fairly good air quality and you notice san francisco staying fairly cool. mid-60s and that trend will continue. for san francisco you see the temperatures climbing towards thursday and dropping down, once again, as we approach friday and

saturday. final check of temperatures for the north bay. temperatures around the tri-valley upper 70s to low 80s and livermore seeing the same temperature trend warming a little bit approaching thursday and then dropping down just in time for the start of the weekend. weather looking pretty good. now, mike, let's find out if the winds are causing any problems on our bridges this morning. >> good note for drivers, we're warning folks to hold on tight as well as the fog drifting around the coastal spots. over here well inland rob was talking about. this is dublin out of livermore. a smooth flow of traffic and look at the build. you can see it on our live camera and more on our sensors over at the altamont pass itself. get towards livermore, no problem. speeds just blipping and that just means the blips are turning to yellow. it's not that they had to blip me out. southbound 680 move smoothly through pleasanton and down towards the south bay, as well. traffic moves nicely in the

northbound direction. no issues as far as road closures and good traffic through san jose and the rest of the silicon valley. your commute heading up towards the bay bridge on either side of the bay moving nicely. the bay bridge itself over on the oakland side, we have a little bit of a build, so, a couple cash lanes have a couple cars waiting but that is about it. over here in the north bay travel crass highway 37 and 101 starts to build a tad bit to petaluma and all green heading down towards the golden gate bridge with a live look across the bay and see across towers and span itself will watch for anything developing over here as far as cloud cover. back to you guys. >> watch for fires, as well. when it comes to the most stolen car in america, mike, the honda accord remains on top according to the company low jack. the accord was the most stolen car of 2013. its fifth year in a row in the top spot and the most common color is black. coming in number two on the list the honda civic and then toyota

instead of classes they expect thousands will be gathering here starting about 4:00 the isafternoon to reflect and to mourn the six lives lost in friday's rampage. now, we have seen several emotional vigils here and around isla vista in the past 12 to 15 hours, including this rally at a deli where investigators say elliot rodger shot his sixth victim. people with groups of signs wanted to push the news media away. blocking televisions and still cameras from the scene because they wanted to protect the people who were coming to the deli to mourn. outside the sorority house classmates and friends mourned together hugging and crying and talking about 22-year-old catherine cooper and 19-year-old veronika weiss who were killed on the lawn of the sorority house. they were gunned down friday and even though many who came to the vigil didn't know the young women they felt their loss and

morning long including a live report from isla vista. any time we're not on the air, head to our website nbcbayarea.com for the very latest. the fremont man accused of strangling his wife to death will make his first appearance in court today. tried to run from police after killing his wife, anita. her body was found at the couple's home by a relative sunday morning. but by that time sing was already on the run with his passports. detectives were able to track him down in milpitas. the ceo of a popular networking site will be in court to enter a plea today. caused a crash on highway 101 that injured a woman near sfo last august. he is the co-founder of san francisco-based nextdoor.com. earlier this month the woman who was hurt filed a civil suit saying his unsafe lane change caused her to crash. he did not call police because

he thought others would and his car never actually hit the woman's vehicle. dozens of people in yosemite are waking up in a red cross shelter a wildfire that doubled in size in a day. at least 100 homes are threatened this morning and dozens of homes are under evacuation orders. more than 500 acres have burned. investigators say the fire started at a house near lake mcclure, near yosemite. cal fire on high alert for more than a month and immediately sent helicopters and bulldozers and other resources to fight that fire. 5:37. want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina this morning and has a look at the microclimate forecast. >> little cooler as we head through the afternoon and temperatures down to five to eight degrees from yesterday's high temperatures inland and mostly 50s across the board, except santa rosa waking up to 48 degrees. early morning view at oakland coliseum there and 55 degrees

and first pitch forecast for that game if you're heading out, close to 64 and the wind out of the northwest from 10 to 20 miles per hour and probably stronger than that in some locations around the peninsula and san francisco later on. one thing we're seeing this morning is notice the wind speeds, fairfield, antioch and livermore. sea breeze off to an early start that will ensure combine would the patches of low clouds reforming on the coast a cooler afternoon around the bay area with highs inland dropping a few degrees and mostly sunny and gusty at times as we approach the evening. one thing we'll see in the forecast for today will be those winds that will be picking up up and onshore breeze and temperatures close to 78 in san jose and 83 in saratoga and around san francisco, those highs in the mid-60s and 65 today and we'll continue that trend of staying in the 60s through wednesday. thursday the warmest day over the next five around san francisco and san jose and temperatures cooling down as we approach the start of the weekend and for the north bay. highs near 81 and highs in the

upper 70s and low 80s out towards the tri-valley. for a check of your morning commute, here's mike. >> tuesday build right now in the south bay, nothing dramatic. but look at this, northbound 101 underneath that 280 interchange and a smooth flow of traffic on our maps and bay area folks pick out your path and you see nothing really unusual three spots, though, of course, slowing in the tri-valley and we'll talk about that. west 24 right around gateway reports of a stalled box truck over there. and your slow lane as smooth slow of traffic slows up on your sensors. crews arrive typical pattern there. southbound 880 at dixon landing road. another box truck reported in one of your middle lanes and we hope that moves quickly to the shoulder but waiting for an update from chp or fremont crews. either one will do really well over there. smooth flow of traffic and towards that dublin interchange and no surprises here and the bay bridge toll plaza, we have

the cash lanes backing up, guys. standard flow. back to you. this is good news, crews working throughout the night opening a key stretch of southbound 280 in san francisco about three hours early. that interstate was closed between sixth street and pennsylvania avenue near at&t park causing quite a few traffic problems for giants fans and delays who needed to travel south after a weekend of fun baseball games. crews retrofitted the road with seismic upgrades and they got done early. data used in the search for the missing malaysian jet was released overnight and expert got a look at it and we'll tell you what they see coming up. a man gets stuck in a chimney in southern california, but he wasn't trying to break into a home. we'll tell you what he was doing there, next. nbc bay area honored with three national awards for excellence in breaking news coverage, feature reporting and public service and television journalism. all from the society of professional journalists. nbc bay area, we investigate.

welcome back. embattled veterans affair eric shinseki has days to tell what happened to vets who died waiting for treatment. tracie potts live on capitol hill. the investigation broadens to more than two dozen v.a. facilities across the country. >> exactly. first president obama wants the broad scope of what's going on here from shinseki himself. his office is due to give an early report, a preliminary report to president obama some time this week. separate from that, that report is due next month. separate from all of that, the inspector general, which is looking at more than two dozen facilities around the country is doing a report. that investigation, that report due later this summer. likely august. and back here on capitol hill, some lawmakers are calling for

danville looking pretty good today warming up to 79. mike? >> looking over here with your tri-valley with the typical tuesday build out of livermore and towards dublin more slowing all the way through towards that dublin interchange and speeds coming down towards 50 miles per hour. you see the build there. no big surprises for the tri-valley and move farther over to the west and we see a little slowing for the castro valley and northbound 238 showing more traffic flow there. and the flexible tubing in the roadway and i know it's light weight and you don't want to hit it and a traffic break to clear that north and a smoother flow through downtown oakland. southbound 880 as you travel past dixon landing road a stalled box truck in your middle lane and still waiting for updates whether they help that off to the shoulder and slowing out of fremont and heading towards milpitas. so, watch for that approaching 237, as well. a smoother flow for the south

when they got caught in this. this enormous slide on sunday. this video showing the path of destruction. that's all mud. it's four miles long, half a mile wide. several hundred feet deep in some parts. the slide followed two days of heavy rain. we have new video this morning of a man who had to be rescued from a chimney in southern california. police say the man was trying to get into his ex-girlfriend's house after a family dispute early monday morning when he got stuck. emergency crews in irvine spent two hours taking the chimney apart piece by piece and then lifting the man to safety. so far no criminal charges have been filed. >> but the family dispute got even larger. >> i would think so. beautiful memorial day ceremony in hawaii. take a look at this. tens of thousand of people lining the shore of honolulu late last night for the annual lantern floating ceremony. about 6,000 candle lit lanterns were released to honor loved

5:53. in the wake of several high-profile data breaches, including ebay last week, visa and mastercard are making new pushes for microchips in credit and debit cards. those chips would replace a card's magnetic strip. two companies say the change would cut down on fraud. chips widely used in mexico and all over europe but not adopted here because of costs and dispute over what kind of payment system to adopt. a signature or a pin number. apple getting into the smart home business. the financial times reports apple will unveil plans at its developer's conference this next week to let you use your iphone or ipad to control your home appliances. users would be able to do things like automatically turn on the lights when they enter the home or set alarms when they leave. meanwhile, the giants hunter pence now offering a unique reward because he wants his scooter back. >> i understand that. >> it was stolen. >> it was stolen.
