with that. and our temperatures, thanks to the stronger sea breeze, running a little bit cooler today. 70s around san jose. low to mid-70s near the peninsula. upper 60s, closer to san francisco. and into the north bay, 81 degrees in santa rosa, and pleasanton, 83. 79 in danville. and the trend ahead, we'll show today is probably going to be one of the cooler days, warming towards thursday, and for the weekend, temperatures drop as a low pressure system moves in. we'll see temperatures cooling saturday and sunday. >> don't forget, get your weather any time you need it, go to the weather channel on cable, weather.com online. and this young man, your mom has the same birthday as natalie morales? june 6th? >> june 6th. >> that's impressive. and by the way, when you come down to the the -- hey, alex. what are you giving out there? alex is our plaza producer. >> nice "america's got talent" sunglasses. >> that's what happens when you come to the plaza, you get free stuff from alex. thank you very much. now let's go back inside.
8:33 am
guys? >> all right, al, thank you so much. four-time emmy winner julia louis-dreyfus stole our hearts, of course, playing elaine on nbc's hit sitcom "seinfeld." now she's making us laugh as vice president selena meyer in the hbo series "veep." but her newest project is different and it's a very personal one. it's a documentary called "generosity of i" and traces her father's decision to sell his extensive art collection to benefit the harlem zone, which is a charity that helps people at risk. jay fielden is the editor of "town & country," holding a special screening of the documentary tonight to kick off a philanthropy summit. >> good morning. that was well-spoken. >> we really got everything into that intro. >> i think we're done. >> i was nervous because you all were looking at me. it's such a pleasure to have you here. especially with such a personal project. i watched the film last night. and i just thought, this is a side of you we've never seen, and we really learn a lot about your dad. what was it like to do that? >> it was wonderful. when my dad first told me that i
8:34 am
was going to gift his collection as part of an endowment for the harlem children's zone, i was utterly floored. i thought -- i spoke to my husband brad, who's the director. and we thought it would be great to get him on film talking about it. and it evolved into this. we really were doing it just personally for ourselves. but it's a good document showing what this is all about, the artist, the harlem children's zone, the importance of that organization, of course. and we're so happy to be partnering with "town & country" to help get the word out. >> mr. louis-dreyfus, i couldn't help but notice -- during the whole film, we see how much you love this art. and then we learn that you're going to give it all away. was it hard to part with something you've been collecting for 50 years? >> well, if i had found a way of taking it with me, i mightn't have given it. busince i can't do that, it's
8:35 am
the next best thing is to give it to jeff canada. and his educational effort. >> jeff canada, of course, is the founder of the harlem children's zone. a great philanthropist. jay, this is how you're kicking off your philanthropy summit. what do you think about what mr. louis-dreyfus is doing here, could be either a model or an inspiration to people who want to give? >> yeah, i think he's probably going to have founded a new movement in philanthropy called eureka if i lon toreeka philant you're at home watching an amazing show about jeffrey canada and you decide to make this amazing gift to an organization that needs it so much. so at "town & country" we've always looked at what it means to give back and he's hit a new level of what that means today. >> you learn a lot about you, of course. we also learn a lot about your taste in art. i love that they call it outsider art, that you didn't necessarily buy what was fashionable or chic necessarily expensive, right?
8:36 am
>> no. i bought what i liked. and, of course, that's no certainty that the art is good. but it is what i liked. >> and julia, you grew up around these pieces. >> yes. >> what did you learn about your dad in the process that surprised you? >> well, you know what i learned in making this film about my dad -- and we spent a lot of time together -- was his personal emotional investment, not only in the artwork itself, but in the lives of the artists whom he's gotten to know in the process over many decades. and how immersed he has been in the art world for decades. so it's been a remarkable journey to tell this story. >> it's so obvious in the film how proud you are of your dad. >> yeah. >> especially that he's giving this away, this great gesture of generosity. but be honest, was there
8:37 am
anything you're like dad, don't give that one away. i'd like to keep that family heirloom. >> i tucked a couple in my bag on the way out. >> and mr. louis-dreyfus, i'm sure you get asked this all the time, but tell us what this young lady was like as a little girl. i mean, did you always know she was going to be a star? >> well, i couldn't tell whether she was going to be a star, but i knew how natural she was. and how much she liked life and fun. she was always very funny. and fun to be with. >> well, she is a delight. >> that's a nice shot. >> we get out all the old shots. nice to have all of you here. congratulations again. >> thank you. >> you can catch the documentary on the website generosityofi.com. check it out. coming up, pop star cher lloyd performs live on our plaza. and next, howie mandel on tonight's return of "america's

8:40 now, get ready for some wild acts. nbc's summer hit "america's got talent" returns tonight. judge howie mandel is here with a preview, and also a big announcement. howie, good to see you. >> huge announcement. you can call me howie mandel. you don't have to call me judge howie mandel. >> okay, fine. usually i say your honor. >> to you i'm just howie. >> we've known each other a long time. >> minutes. >> there's been turnover on a lot of the other judges' tables on shows like this. why do you still love this? >> five years i've been doing it. i'm addicted to talent. talent is my -- but i love this show. and i love the paycheck. and i love nbc. >> did you put that in the correct order? >> well, politically correct
8:41 am
order. no, i love the show. i can't believe this is a job. people -- hopefully millions of americans will sit at home watching it. i'm getting paid to do the same thing. >> as someone who's been in show biz for a long time, is it watching that moment when someone lays it all on the line that you like? >> i have such empathy for anybody who's willing to walk out in front of people. just walk out in front of people and you don't know what's going to happen next. but then that moment that you speak of, where somebody's life has changed forever when they're just plucked from obscurity and then their dreams are coming true right in front of everybody's eyes. i can't tell you -- there are no words to describe that feeling. >> even before doing this show, you had a pretty good eye for talent, i would imagine. now you've honed that eye for talent. is there someone through the audition process that you look at right now and say people in this country will know that person's name coming up. >> yeah, this year there's probably more than one person. and we say this every year, that the talent just keeps getting better, but there are a few names that you're going to know. not only names, but this year
8:42 am
the bar has been raised. it's the most outrageous year ever. the craziest acts. the most amazing acts. the youngest and oldest people we've ever had on the show. we have like an 8-year-old knife-thrower who's throwing knives at his 6-year-old sister. >> see, we discourage that in my house. >> we discourage it in my house, too, but on "america's got talent," nothing is discouraged. there are no rules. we have the oldest act we've ever had. 94 years old. he's a strength act. a strength act. unbelievable. >> and by the way, speaking of strength acts, you displayed great strength recently. you actually did a little shirtless dancing. >> that's not strength, that's stupidity. why do you have to show -- that's not me. >> i was going to say, you look great. >> look at me. that's me. you know what? sometimes you do things -- >> there you go. >> we don't have to talk about that. there i am. >> howie, you look good. >> thank you, sir. the truth is, had i thought about it, i wouldn't have done it. and had i known that you were
8:43 am
going to replay it over and over again, i wouldn't have done it. some decisions aren't -- i was hot, it was the end of the day. i just joined the crowd. >> enough said. this announcement, by the way. >> can i make it now? >> go ahead. >> okay, so here's what happens. this is the biggest talent show in the world. and 48 people get to go to live shows at the iconic radio city music hall. us judges have only picked 47. >> so there's one slot. >> one slot left to go directly to the live shows. that's why i'm wearing this shirt. "today's got talent." we are going to let the "today" show viewers choose that final contestant. >> they don't have to audition. >> you're going right through to the live show. this is how we're going to do it. first of all, send a tape or audition, go to today.com/agt to send a video of your audition. anything goes. i just told you anything. you don't have to sing. you don't have to dance. anything goes. and, they will come here, you guys will whittle it down to
8:44 am
three people on the plaza. and then your viewers will vote for the one person that goes to the live shows. so we are letting you, "today," we are letting you decide who is that final person. and matt, a dream will come true. you can make the next superstar. it doesn't say today.com/agt, but that's where you have to go. >> i just wish you were a little more into it. >> i love it! it's amazing. wait until you see the tapes you get. >> i can't wait. >> some of them aren't even for families. >> howie. good to see you. >> all right. tonight. >> head to today.com for more on the "today's got talent" contest. tonight, 8:00/7:00 central time right here on nbc. up next, a live performance from cher lloyd. but first, this is "today" on nbc.

"sorry i'm late." late for what? what does the title mean? >> well, i'm not late to occasion. i wasn't late today. i think i was very early. but i mean it in a way of my music, growing up a little, and getting to know myself. that's how that title came around. >> sophomore album. your first album was a huge success. the bad news is your first album was a huge success, and a lot of people get nervous bringing out a second album. are you nervous?
