out there. update to breaking news. police looking at surveillance video showing a crash where a pedestrian was hit and pinned under a car. on the outer richmond. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live in san francisco. right now officers have the driver, right? >> yeah, good morning to you, scott. that's right, san francisco police are interviewing the driver who's still on scene in the back of the patrol car. what they're telling us is that he's not being very cooperative. he was confrontational to the first officers who arrived on scene. here's what they say they know. they're trying to determine if he was drinking or not after the car he was in, the one that's sitting down there an acura hit a man who was walking by. you can see the jack in the back of it. that's what they had to do to get the man out. they had to actually lift it up. this is at the chevron at 24th and gerry street and the call, the emergency call didn't come from inside the car, it came from the gas station attendened who apparently saw the aftermath

at about 3:30 this morning when police arrived they say that firefighters were already here just frantically jacking up the car and trying to get the man out who was trapped underneath it. >> has very serious head trauma. he was transported to san francisco general. he's being worked on right now. and -- >> critical? >> it is definitely critical. >> now, there are also as we mentioned earlier they are looking at surveillance tapes from inside the gas station and we have to look at that. they told us no. but they said that will help them figure out how fast the car was going and the circumstances, that is very key to this. what they told us is that the driver, they believe, is in his 30s and passenger in the car, as well, that they're talking to. that the passenger said the two were coming from a party and is cooperating and we believe that the person who was hit is a man

in his late 40s or early 50s. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> all right, christie, thank you. opening statements are expected today in bryan stow's civil suit against the l.a. dodgers. comes two day after questioning potential jurors. peggy bunker joins us with the details. the cost has to be staggering. >> it is absolutely incredible. $50 million is how much bryan stow's attorney said his past and future medical bills could cost after being beaten to death on opening day three years ago. the jurors have been selected in the civil suit against the l.a. dodgers and the grounds for the civil suit is that the dodgers didn't provide enough security or adequate lighting at the game. stow, a former paramedic and father to two suffered brain damage during that beating and is permanently disabled. the two men pled guilty in

criminal court earlier this year. they were asked directly if they were dodger fans and if they could be impartial when it came to mccourt and his former baseball team. eight men and eight women were selected for the jury. they include an attorney, school bus driver, a nurse, a journalist and a mail carrier, among others. interestingly, the civil suit also seeks impugnative and reimbursement funds to return to those who supported the bryan stow fund. they would like to see the dodgers pay that money back. opening statements are scheduled for this morning. jurors have been warned that this will be an emotional case. first up on the witness stand this morning will be stow's mother, ann. she has been one of his main care takers and how difficult this has been not only for her but the entire stow family. back to you. >> one we'll continue to follow, thanks, peggy. in an exclusive interview month in the making, leaking secrets from the american government. snowden sat down with brian

williams with his first interview on american television. he insists he is a patriot and tried to work within the system. the former nsa contractor said he complained repeatedly to supervisors before refleeing the country and leaking details about the government's spying programs. he says he wants to come back to the united states, but is still proud of what he did. >> i may have lost my ability to travel. but i've gained the ability to go to sleep at night and put my head on the pillow and feel comfortable that i've done the right thing. even when it was the hard thing. and i'm comfortable with that. >> the obama administration says clemency or simply dropping the charges is not an option. rapper snoop line, joe montana and other big-name celebrities will host a benefit part of snoop's no gun allowed campaign. the events will start with a discussion about the importance of gun violence solution followed by an auction of

snoop's paintings and other belongings. benefit the no-gun allowed initiative and the snoop youth football league. include willy brown, rapper mc hammer. a special town meeting will be held tonight to explain 8060, the bill allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses. the informational forum will be held on youth street in san jose runs from 6:00 to 8:00. if the bill goes into effect, the meeting can explain what people can expect and what documents they need. those already crowded muni buses are losing seats because they're not safe enough. the chronicle reporting that muni placed decals on some forward facing seats because of a warning from bus manufacturers. those seats have no barrier in front of them, so people can be thrown forward if the bus stops

suddenly. muni has plans to replace the entire bus fleet in the next five years. ticket prices at one south bay movie theater are going down. the camera 12 cinemas in downtown san jose have slashed prices for the summer. the theater also offering a special $7 ticket to movie goers who show their san jose public library card. rare you find something going down in price. >> it is, especially movies. christina loren probably saw a few movies on her day off and now back with a look at the forecast. >> actually watched the "lost" marathon. sci-fi geek i like to live dangerously. 54 degrees in san francisco. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures are going to be warm, so, one of those days you want to prepare for the heat ahead. definitely feeling like summertime, although first official day of summer not until the 21st of june. 84 degrees the high in the south

bay and 81 for the peninsula and 70 degrees hold on to the sunshine and the 70s in the city and just for one more day as of tomorrow those temperatures crash little system comes through here and that will increase the wind for today. abundant sunshine in san francisco until about 1:00 p.m. and then that fog will return and this will cool us off as the return of onshore flow. for today, a warmer day, you may have to use your ac with the upper 80s with the warmest news across the bay. 70s at the coast and highs coming in at 4:00 p.m. the hottest point of the day. if you're looking to open up the windows in your home, you might want to wait until 6:30. temperatures cool off and you get the comfortable ocean breeze. 80 for the peninsula and 70 in san francisco and we'll show you the changes coming your way for the weekend coming up. right now, let's check your drive and welcome in mike inouye. >> looking over at the bay bridge toll plaza and sun starting to shine, as well. very early. that's okay, early for the backup at the bay bridge toll

plaza. over here southbound 13 just off of 24 and an earlier crash has cleared from the chp reports in just the last couple of minutes. slower drive coming in towards the area and no problems reported coming out of the caldecott tunnel and a little slowing past oak street where there was overnight road crew typical as it starts to clear the area. eastbound 80, that's away from the bridge moves very smoothly but into san pablo reports of a couch or large chair and sounds like everything has moved off the roadway and also from the chp report but watching flashing lights causing distraction for the next few. the rest of your drive coming off dublin west 580 moves smoothly and an easy drive but the slowing starts out of the altamont pass and the rest of the bay, the south bay and peninsula, no problems, guys. an easy, predictable commute right now. send it back to you. the kickstarter campaign that raised more than $1 million

potential crash. the 2014 chevy impala was the only nonluxury car to achieve the highest safety rating. bmw 5 series and mercedes-benz e class and buick regal and cadillac cts and xts and the 2015 hyundai genesis. dropped its fight against the maker of a popular hot sauce, sriracha. voted last night to drop the public nusauns and the city issued the declaration after residents started complaining that spicy odors burned their throats and eyes. it has fixed the problem and the city took them at their word. lawyers for general motors will appear in a chicago courtroom to talk about the multiple lawsuits filed against that company for the faulty ignition switches. 13 people died. morgan brennan live at cnbc

headquarters with what the detroit automaker is asking for. good morning, morgan. >> federal judge is holding a hearing today to consider a motion on whether to consolidate all those switches into a single class action. many gm owners say the value of their cars have dropped. the scrutiny of models in the recall. lawyers also believe the current and not prebankruptcy gm should be held libel. the judge is not expected to issue a ruling today, however. meanwhile, futures are higher after stocks snatched their four-day win streak and investors are feeling a bit skiddish as levels not seen since last summer and we're getting data today on unemployment and pending home sales and a report of first quarter gdp. that may show the economy actually contracted this winter. although many people do chalk that up to the weather and growth should rebound this spring. the dow falling 42 points and

nasdaq losing 12 to 24, 25. google releasing stats on the makeup of its work and the numbers aren't good. about 70% of employees are male and 61% are white. silicon valley firm reluctant to release this kind of diversity stat amid increasing pressure to hire more women and minorities. scott, back to you. >> morgan brennan, thank you much. late-night talk show host chelsea handler may be coming to netflix. she has not said what's next, but tells e she is in talking with netflix for a new show. no word on what it will entail but handler told howard stern netflix would be the ideal situation allowing people to watch her whenever they want. it took just over ten hours for one kick starter campaign to get more than $1 million in funding.

there and sunday looking for the warm sxth the sunshine and comfortable day out there at the beach. 65 degrees in downtown san francisco and the north bay about 84 degrees. today the warmest of the week and suddenly dropping those numbers as we head into friday and saturday. i know a dad that likes to read to his kids. good morning, mike inouye. >> now my kids are reading to me and i'm just resting my eyes. traffic moving very smoothly through san rafael and coming out of put luma and far north bay and now we'll look closer to the bay itself, golden gate bridge and a crystal clear view after somebody cleaned off the lens, thank you for doing that. nice, nice view and you can see the hill and you will see clouds and low cloud cover starting tomorrow and the next couple days. city and the rest of the bay looks pretty predictable. you can see no delays reported from san francisco down to the south bay and muni, caltrans and

all your systems reporting with no delays. nicer, easier drive as highway 13 the southbound crash cleared just off of 24 wasn't a major issue. debris reported southbound 880 right around 60 and maybe a stalled vehicle and no slowing right here past the scene. the rest of the east bay and along this portion of 880 moves nicely heading over towards the tri-valley and dublin interchange moving at speed and sorting itself out through livermore and no problems once you pass through livermore avenue. right in the middle there, that's your typical construction 880, back to you. >> thank you. new video this morning of a car slamming through the front door of a library in new york and it is graphic. the toyota rav 4 turned into the lot in spring valley. suddenly accelerated. here it comes. you can see a young girl jump out of its path outside the

library and the suv goes through the front of the library and smashes several desks. six people were hurt, including one teen that was pinned under that suv. the driver claims mechanical trouble. no charges have been filed so far. we also have video of an oil tanker that exploded off the coast of japan. this happened earlier this morning. seven crew members rescued, but the ship's captain still missing. four crew members are recovering from very serious burns. the ship exploded while workers were on the deck. investigators looking into what started that fire. at 5:20, hundreds in nuapals capital remembering the 16 sherpa guides that died in an avalanche last month. that survivor is now 81 years old. but he did not climb to the top. new zealand sir edmund hillary

and his sherpa guide were the first to reach that summit back in 1953. people lit candles in memory of the guides that died last month. in honor of the mt. everest anniversary, the san francisco zoo is holding a ceremony this morning. one of the zoo's newest additions was named after the sherpa who accompanied sir edmund hillary to the top of mt. everest. the first 61 visitors will get a panda bracelet. the ceremony starts at 9:00. 5:21 right now. world cup dress code. the country that is talking about what you can can and cannot wear to soccer's biggest event. moments of certainty.

apparently no passengers were on this train at the time. we'll continue to watch it. at least five groups have jumped into the fray to buy the l.a. clippers. one of them offering $1 billion. "the l.a. times" reports a group of los angeles investors teamed with a former nba star, grant hill, and offered $1.2 billion to the team. no word on the value of the other bid. now, even if she does reach a deal with one of the groups, shellie sterling still needs to get her estranged husband to agree to the sale and persuade 75% of nba owners to sign off on it. the initial offer for the team is amazing, considering donald sterling purchased the clippers in '81 for $12.5 million. if the current offer is accepted, it will more than double the highest price ever paid for an nba team. milwaukee bucks were recently purchased for $550 million. one of the future hosts of

the world cup is issuing a dress code. just released this ad campaign telling fans who attend the 2022 world cup they will need to dress modestly. that means being covered up from the shoulders to the knees. men's wearing shirts at all times and women not wearing leggings as pants. the small middle eastern nation is trying to make sure tourists respect its culture and tradition. speaking of the world cup, the first team has arrived in brazil for this year's event. the world cup team landed late last night. the secretary-general tweeted out a welcome saying "soccerous have landed in brazil." the world cup starts in two weeks. that's always a huge event. christina had a couple days off but back with us. >> happy to be back and really excited about the world cup. temperatures right now looking really good.

880 and your commute. let's take another peek outside this morning. starting our thursday morning, the sun is up. i like how christina is telling us the coast is clear on this thursday, may 29th. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. students and staff at san jose high school will hold a vigil to honor one of the young men killed in friday night's attack. leyland high school officials say they do expect more than 1,000 people. chen graduated two years ago and among two other bay area men who were stabbed to death by their roommate in isla vista. chen's roommate probably won't be there but they requested some of the special music for the

vigil. begin tonight on the campus' main quad. candles will be provided and people can bring their own, as well. last night hundreds of people at uc berkeley sent a message to the victims with their own vigil. organizers say the candles were a way of standing up against darkness and evil. one woman who spoke graduated from ucsb in december and lived with one of the victims, katie cooper. >> whatever i did she always loved me and that was pretty amazing of her to be able to do that. >> viktoria tutored the men. any time we're not on air visit nbcbayarea.com and get the latest information. an update now to breaking news in san francisco a man is in police custody and another in the hospital this morning after a crash at a gas station.

happened near 24th and eerie in the outer richmond district. christie smith joins us live from the scene in san francisco and i understand a gas station attendant actually made that 911 call. >> good morning to you. the gas station attendant here on the chevron on 24th and gary did see this and was the one to phone it in. firefighters arrived and they had to use a jack to get a man under a car who was trapped there. but we do have some new information for you. i just spoke with police and they're telling me that initially it was very, they were unsure whether this man would survive. now, they're saying they have some optimistic news. they do believe that he will. he is in icu and looks like he's going to recover. but what they're now telling us, initially it was thought that they were getting gas. two men in a car and they may have hit this man who got trapped under a car. what they're learning from one of the people inside the car is that it appears they had a blow out with the tire and were here to change it and somehow this

man got trapped under a car. whether they were leaving and he got hit or somehow the car came down on him, they just not sure. they're telling us that the driver is not cooperative at all and confrontational with the officers that first arrived and also looking into the possibility that he may have been drinking. what they do know is that when firefighters arrived here they found a man with this very, very serious head injury that was trapped under a car that had two people inside. both of those people are detained and investigators speaking with them right now trying to get information. they say the passenger is cooperating and they also took video from inside and they're going to check that out and see if that shed lights on exactly how this unfolded. the good news, it looks like this man who was hit and trapped will survive. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." well, opening statements are expected today in bryan stow's

"today in the bay" peggy bunker is here with details. we're hearing the costs of stow's care is in the tens of millions of dollars. >> $50 million is how much bryan will have to pay for his past and future medical bills that could continue to go up after being nearly beaten to death on opening day nearly three years ago at dodger stadium while wearing his giants jersey. the jurors have been selected against the l.a. dodger and the team's former owner is set to begin this morning. the ground for the civil suit is that the dodgers did not provide enough security at the game or adequate lighting. stow, a former paramedic and father of two, suffered brain damage during that beating and permanently disabled, as you can see. he attended the jury selection here in his wheelchair. the two men pled guilty to that attack in criminal court earlier this year. two days of questioning potential jurors because of the high-profile case here that so

appearances. 5:35. right now let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. she has your -- >> microclimate forecast. >> she has it all. >> including a compliment. i noticed that hair cut, mr. scott mcgrew. >> nothing 12 bucks can't do. >> hey, you have to tell me who your barber is. 54 degrees in san francisco and 53 to kick off the day in the east bay. we have a good-looking day. it is going to be warm. i have to tell you off the bat. temperatures approaching the upper 80s in the north bay and the tri-valley and mid-80s here for us in the south bay and hold on to the 70s for one final day in san francisco. this is what you can expect. peak warmth for today and those low clouds will develop and roll in as you're making your way in home from work. temps will tumble tomorrow and six to ten degrees cooler as we get into your friday and the weekend temps stay seasonably mild for saturday and boost the numbers up for sunday. if you're trying to get to the

beach, sunday looks fantastic. do want to draw your that we will warm you up as we get into next week. enjoy the natural coolant friday and saturday and comfortable conditions mostly for saturday and then a little warm as we get am to sunday. up to 81 in san mojose and tell you what's happening across the bay area. free events we'd like to let you know about those. that's coming up. right now, let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. two crashes off the nimitz freeway. right by the coliseum as b.a. b.a.r.t. will head over and the off ramp and a distraction for folks going by but just a little slower right there at the scene. use caution heading south past the coliseum. on the map the bigger issue northbound. reported on the opposite side of the freeway and northbound approaching 16th and you lose two lanes because of a crash, originally a stall and now fender bender northbound through

"today in the bay" tracie potts live in washington with a look at where snowden goes from here. good morning, tracie. >> good morning. he sat down for five hours with our brian williams, sort of a no holds bar interview. he answered all the questions he was asked, including, does he stay in russia or come back to the u.s. does he even want to come home? >> if i could go anywhere in the world, that place would be home. >> but for now he's in russia charged with espionage. edward snowden the man who blew the cover off the surveillance program said he considers himself a patriot.

march. crews plan to take advantage of weather as they bat alwildfire burning near yosemite. the fire started on monday and has burned down two homes and about 680 acres. evacuation orders were lifted for about 50 people. twice as many were ordered to leave when the fire broke out nearly 700 firefighters were working that fire. five of them have been hurt there. but they're going to be okay. right now the fire is 40% contained. >> which is a great improvement because a few days ago they had a tough time. >> the wind particularly. >> exactly. want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> we haven't hit summertime just yet. we are in this drought and, as we know, more severe the further south you go. in the state of california. so as we head throughout the day today here in the bay area, we will see an increase of that moisture that comes off the pacific onshore flow returns but not before we get rapid warming for the first part of the day.

and smoothing through livermore and by the time you get to dublin and 680, you're flowing just fine. into the south bay traffic, very good right here. oakland we have issues. northbound 880 and crash in the backup that was formed as a crash blocked two lanes at 16th and originally reported southbound and northbound was the corrected direction and all lanes just cleared in the last couple moments. that recovery should take place very quickly and southbound and another crash moved off of the freeway but the 98th avenue off ramp. they might have to close it for a short period of time. down the east shore freeway, very close to the speed limit and no problems approaching the bay bridge toll plaza and the toll plaza itself, a quick look and we'll show you we have the lanes and the metering lights turned on over at the toll mrauza and the maze moves smoothly. no delays on roads and rails and b.a.r.t. down to bta and look at the south bay and the maps you
