6:01 am
a very good morning to you, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. dr struggling bay area schools thanks to mark zuckerberg and his wife. christie smith joins us in redwood city with why the silicon valley power couple felt the need to donate $120 million. cri >> one of the most prosperous places in the world but a lot of the public schools don't have the funding and the resources they need to help students succe succeed. he and his wife, dr. priscilla chan decided they wanted to do something about that and improving public education is something that they really care about. the facebook ceo said they went ahead and lisened to the need of educators and ready to throw in their support.
6:02 am
$120 million over five years. the announcement was published in an op-ed piece. less than 40% of students were proficient in english arts and less than 50% in art. funding will go towards connectivity for training for teachers and in the ravenswood school district and high-need schools in san francisco. he noted that he's been spending more and more time looking into education issues and he actually recently taught an after school program at a public middle school in melo park. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. today the "today" show will have an exclusive interview with mark zuckerberg's wife but we will have a sneak peek live with savannah guthrie coming up at 6:30 right here on "today in the bay." neighbors in a san jose

neighborhood woken up in the middle of the night so officers could investigate a stabbing. interstate 680 about 2:30 this morning. and there was pretty big police presence there. the victim was taken to the hospital and officers connected evidence and talked to people who live nearby. we are still waiting to find out how badly the victim was injured and if police have any suspects in mind. a special needs student in a wheelchair beaten by a security guard at a bay area high school. >> the whole thing was caught on camera. you can see the attack on this surveillance video that was just released. "today in the bay" peggy bunker joining us with more now this morning and this video is very shocking. >> it certainly is especially taking place in a school hallway. this video surfacing after the may 19th attack. to think a security guard hired to protect students at school would then attack one of the kids he is supposed to look after it is shocking and it all started after a student in a wheelchair was lingering for too long in the hallway. that student has cerebral palsy.
6:04 am
take a look at the video you can see the security guard rolling martinez down the hallway and then this this is after he and aner were rushing the students and he leans over to whack him there two or three times and then pushes the student out of his wheelchair on to the floor. you see the other security guard stepping in to restrain his partner. reportedly when mitchell started pushing martinez in the chair towards class, martinez slapped at the guard in response mitchell took his handcuffs out and cuffed the student and then continued to roll him to class. he turned around and spat on the officer. that's when mitchell started throwing these punches. the principal of the school sent out a letter to parents and staff explaining exactly what happened with this incident and apologizing. that letter reads in part, "i'm shocked and deeply hurt by this behavior and i apologize on behalf of the staff at oakland high. this is not the kind of chulture th . the guard charged with felony child abuse. mitchell was fired that day and
6:05 am
oakland police arrested him and charged him with felony for the assault. as for francisco martinez he went to the hospital that day due to his injuries mostly on his chin which he allegedly injured when he was thrown from the chair. he is now recovering. that video just tough to see in the last place you would expect to see that kind of attack, at school. >> thank you. officers, meanwhile, turning in ether badges and changes prompting more officers to leave their jobs with the san jose police department. four officers resigned this week when changes to their disability retirements kicked in. injured officers used to be able to go on disability and collect a paycheck without having to work. if an officer gets hurt on the job, he or she may be forced to take a desk job with the city. those desk jobs are the first positions to go when budget cuts come around. but san jose mayor chuck reid says too many people are abusing that benefit. the officers' union said it's possible the department could lose 200 officers to retirement
6:06 am

6:26 am
get through it. >> of course, very interesting duo that we spoke with earlier and we will talk with them at the end of the newscast. the man who is amputated below the knee and his partner who is legally blind and how these two work together in triathlons and this will be their first one here escape from alcatraz. we'll talk with them in 30, 35, 37. >> it is a story worth sticking around for. >> you got the stop watch going. very cool. >> we'll be here. but stick around for that story, if you can. that's amazing. >> very cool. music lovers headed to napa this weekend not only for the wine. >> the second annual bottle rock music festival is back in town. festival starts today at noon near downtown. new promoter says it's trying to avoid the fiasco of last year's event when it went bankrupt. the city, vendors and workers were left unpaid. the new promoter has already paid bills in advance.

6:31 am
schools. >> we've seen first hand that the quality of education really varies in our area from the highest performing schools to the most underserved schools. >> the full interview will air on "today" show right after "today in the bay" but getting a preview right now courtesy of savannah guthrie who joins us live from 30 rock in new york city. good morning, savannah. >> good morning laura and scott. good to see you. >> here in silicon valley we report about mark zuckerberg all the time. dr. chan kept a low profile, why did she choose now to step into the public spotlight? >> i said, you haven't done meay interviews and she said you are my first. in this case she knew stepping forward would draw more attention to this donation and i think that is really what motivated her to sit down for an interview and talk about the donation to the bay area schools and then, of course, we talked a
6:32 am
lot about life being married to mark zuckerberg and some of her thoughts on the big issues of the day. i don't get the feeling from her that this is going to mark the beginning of a very high-profile life. it doesn't seem it be her personality, but i think where she feels that using that profile and using this platform can be helpful to the things she cares about, she is willing to do that and fascinating to talk to her and see her in action because, as you said, we rarely get to do so. >> not only share part of her personal life, as well, but to share some of that wealth that they have to schools right here in the bay area, public schools instead of private. >> yeah, public schools. we talked a lot about that. she is the product of a public school and the daughter of immigrants who came over on a refugee boat. she was really, essentially, raised by her grandparents because both of her parents worked around the clock to support the family and public school teachers who made all the difference for her. they saw her potential and told
6:33 am
her, maybe you should apply to harvard. she said as a child of an immigrant, she was encouraged to get a good education, but that she really didn't have the first clue how to navigate it. for her, it's very, very personal. >> so, we'll see the on-camera persona of her but off camera how would you describe dr. chan? >> i thought she was a delight. she is very, very warm. she has a really funny, bubbly personality. she's really smart. she's also very unassuming. she's not somebody who puts you off or is putting on, she seems like somebody you would love to chat with and have coffee with. she's insanely and intimidatin intimidatingly smart and i would like to talk to her and get to know her a little bit. >> you asked her about the hoodie. >> come on, guys, you can't blame me. we all know that mark zuckerberg has one major outfit choice, the t-shirt and the hoodie.
6:34 am
i asked him about it when i interviewed him a few months ago. he wears a clean hoodie every day. as long as she doesn't wear it to weddings or baby showers, she's good with the hoodie. >> all right, savannah, we look forward to seeing it on "today" show this morning. thank you much. >> good to talk to you. >> always good to see you, thanks, is savannah. >> entire interview coming up at 7:00 after "today on the bay." >> kind of in the public eye. >> interesting people. another interesting girl, our own christina loren will look at the microclimate forecast as we take a peek outside overlooking san francisco. you're saying a pretty nice weekend across the bay area. >> it is. the weather here likely contributed to that hoodie trend because, as you know, year-round here in the bay area, you're using your sweater one day and
6:35 am
you're peeling it off the next. got to love the microclimates and pal opsalto is one of those cities where it is nice out there. 53 degrees to kick off your morning and that's san francisco, but look at this. uniform temperatures just about everywhere except for your outlying spots. san martin and santa rosa, chilly this morning. we are on our way towards a gorgeous afternoon. this is the reason why. take it right to your futurecast and stop that clock at 1:00 p.m. and you notice the low clouds clinging to the forecast and as a result that cool ocean air will keep our temperatures nice and comfortable. 76 in the south bay and happy to tell you about 73 degrees along the peninsula and 63 degrees in san francisco for today and comfortable conditions across the board mix of sun and clouds and then crank up that heat next week. overall, though, the weekend looks good. close look at that coming up. right now back to you guys. >> got some carpet on the roadway this morning. >> are they carpeting now? >> one of the advanced things in
6:36 am
the bay -- no, they're not. looking over towards the tri-valley. we're tackilking about the tri-valley. and the pleasanton area. countercommute but big issue right now. reports of two to three rolls of carpet in your second and third lanes. in the middle there as you're traveling north out of highway 84 and heading up towards presidenta pleasanton. they were able to clear that pretty quickly and track that for the next few and southbound commute coming out of that area moves nicely towards the south bay and look how light it is on our sensors. slowing up towards 880 and then clearing by the time it gets to the airport and 87 the earlier slow down back to the speed limit up from downtown and typical of a friday and we'll see it kick in from 8:30 and 9:00 and the entire north bay. here the southbound side of 880 through hayward and no surprises and down past the san mateo
6:37 am
bridge a little bit of a build. we're focusing on the east bay and the approach towards the bay bridge toll plaza. a live look past the oakland coliseum shows you no problems. consider using b.a.r.t. through the area and check that out closer to the evening hours. and over here the bay bridge toll plaza use b.a.r.t. to avoid this, as well. so far look at the fastrak lanes are moving nicely and be careful so far no problems reported by any drivers. >> looks pretty good on friday. thanks, mike. 6:37. still ahead, a crack in the sky deck 103 stories up. the scary sight a california family saw beneath their feet and we'll tell you how it happened and why crews say, you know what, this is not as dangerous as it looks. nbc bay area honored with three national awards hawn rbd with excellence for breaking news coverage, feature reporting and pub lb servilic service.

new video this morning. hidden cash, chaos in southern california. people trampling plants and each otherovernight trying to get their hands on 100 bucks. a phenomenon that started here in the bay area, but the new chaos might force the man behind hidden cash to stop altogether. >> adrian joins us live in burbank and, adrian, there were traffic jams caused by this hidden cash frenzy. >> well, good morning to you, scott and laura. both the anonymous benefactor and police are concerned by what they are seeing. people essentially putting themselves in harm's way looking for cash. and we saw that play out here in
6:45 am
burbank at the shopping center yesterday. three envelopes of cash hidden. one of them, they've all been found but one found right near this restaurant where we are right now. video i wanted to show you. gives you an idea of the chaos and the frenzy we saw last night started around 7:00 last night. packs of people flooding this area, rushing bus stops and juching in front of vehicles and cars and trucks backed aon the surface streets here. police described it as a traffic nightmare. they hope would lead to cash and, again, three spots where cash was hidden and that money has been found. last night it was burbank. the night before l.a. police say they did not receive any calls with fights or crashes but the free money, this is something they believe that could spiral out of control very quickly. even the man behind all of this acknowledged that in a statement this morning. want to show you the statement right now. he wrote in part, large crowds lately, please, walk and drive safely. a young woman ran right in front of my car a few days ago.
6:46 am
i will do my best to pick locations that are safe and be respectful to the locations themselves and the surrounding businesses and be kind and happy with each other as that is what this is all about. police agree with that whole heartedly. they're a bit concerned any time there is a lure of free cash that can bring out unsavory characters and whenever you have a big crowd kind of gathering very quickly, they are concerned that that could bring out a mob mentality. ways that they can monitor social media to try to stop any potential public safety threat, but nothing yesterday that really alarmed them. they were aware of the situation, but, again, they said it escalated very quickly. by the way, from what we understand, there is a promise that there is going to be more fun today from the philanthropist who is in charge of all of this. no specifics whether or not the scavenger hunt and not sure what that will entail just yet. >> let me tell you this, adrian, because he left some money in
6:47 am
