a girl attacked with a hammer at school. we'll tell you how the intruder was allowed on campus and what police are doing today to keep students safe. and weed for votes. how south bay pot clubs are blazing new territory at the polls. good monday morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. temperatures upper 40s to low 50s and we're headed towards a spectacular day inland and june gloom at the coast and then that heat cranks. your full forecast is moments away. some of that gloom is called monday morning commute. bay bridge toll plaza getting over towards san francisco and san francisco and daly city. why you might be doing some fare swapping on transit this morning, as well. let's take a peek outside this morning. city by the bay, san francisco. that big escape from alcatraz triathlon this weekend. pretty amaze. it is 6:00 a.m. on monday, the 2nd of june. this is "today in the bay."

good monday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. developing story in san francisco where the fbi is searching for a suspect wanted for allegedly making bombs. police are searching for this man, ryan chamberlain. they found bombmaking chemicals inside his russian hill apartment. let's start our coverage right now with "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live from the neighborhood. chris, we don't really understand what the suspect was planning to do with these bombmaking chemicals. >> no. and the fbi does go out of its way to say that there is no imminent public threat, though the manhunt does continue and ryan chamberlain is considered armed and dangerous. let's give you a look at him, once again. 42 years old. best known for public relations and savvy media and work on pretty high-profile political

campaigns including gavin newsom. this is what it looked like outside his home on saturday and sunday as fbi agents along with san francisco police and fire swarmed the russian hill home and found those explosive materials that you mentioned inside. the fbi not saying what precipitated the search, only that it is part of a criminal investigation. the former head of san francisco's republican party knew chamberlain well before he switched parties to the democratic side and said he can't imagine what his plans are but hopes he will turn himself in, something echoed by the fbi. >> have the explosives and all that is just totally mind boggle for me. well, i'm hoping that, you know, he turns himself in. i hope he doesn't get into any more trouble. i don't know what he's thinking. i don't know what he's been doing the last few years. what's going on in his head. i'm just hoping this all comes out that nobody gets hurt. >> please, if you have any sort of sightings or if you know him,

please, just let us know so we can help apprehend him and, again, just bring him in so people are safe. >> ryan chamberlain is 6'3", blue eyes, brown hair, short hair. the fbi said he was last seen south of san francisco yesterday driving a white nissan altima. it may have california plates and it may have texas plates. they're not sure at this point. he is on the road and he's traveling alone and they also say he's considered armed and dangerous. in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> i know you're working hard to get detail on that. never mind, we'll ask you later. it is 6:03. students at one oakland elementary school will see police officers on campus this morning. it comes after a parent allegedly attacked a student with a hammer. it happened friday at lafayette elementary school. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us from the school where investigators think this stems from some sort of family

feud. that's horrible, christie. >> good morning to you. it is really disturbing. what they're saying is that the mom was apparently a volunteer on campus quite a bit, so, her presence didn't raise any red flags or any alarms. and the accusations against her this morning are really disturbing. that she attacked this 9-year-old girl with a hammer. today oakland police are expected to have an officer stationed here on market street in west oakland as a precaution. they think this was an isolated incident. but the district spokesperson says they believe, as you said, that this may have been some sort of feud going on between two families and this could have been some sort of revenge. the mom herself has an 8-year-old at the school. and the district spokesperson said it appears that this mom led the third grader to a bathroom away from a play area where the alleged attack occurred. >> it was a heinous event, really, where a parent betrayed the trust of the community during a time when the students were at recess out on the

playyard. >> now, the mom was arrested at the scene on friday. the girl taken to a hospital, but she's expected to recover. she was conscious and communicating as she left the school. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> kind of shocking that would happen. thanks a lot, christie. lawyers for pgand p e back in court. today a status hearing. last month the utility pleaded not guilty to 12 criminal charges stemming from the 2012 explosion. pg&e is known for violating requirements when it comes to the san bruno gas line as well as two other pipes. it killed eight people and injured dozens of others. 38 homes destroyed and so far no trial date has been set. today we'll find out which san jose marijuana clubs are partis paying in the weed for votes campaign. an effort to encourage voter turnout for tomorrow's primary elections. medical clubs will give out free

marijuana to members that prove they voted. tomorrow's ballot doesn't contain any marijuana specific items but activists have created a cannabis friendly voter guide. leaders of the coalition say they're doing this to make sure the right politicians will be elected. meantime, a live look outside and check in your microclimate forecast and the june gloom, yes, it's june already as we give you a live look at the golden gate bridge. time to check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. happy monday, everybody. help you get out the front door on time this morning. the fog could slow you down as you make your way up the peninsula. overall looking good in terms of wind and pretty chilly out there this morning and a good-looking day shaping up. current temperatures on the weather wall. 40s and 50s and want to show you, though, the very different parts of the bay area right now. those microclimates making a big impact as we kick off the new week. 53 degrees in san francisco and 55 in mountain view and,

meanwhile, upper 40s in santa rosa as we kick off your monday. but this is the big story of the day, the fog that june gloom has returned. as a result, our temperatures are going to end up a little bit cooler than average for today. same deal for tomorrow and then that sunshine returns in full force later on this week. so, enjoy that natural coolant for today and you see right now the thickest fog and the thickest low cloud cover and mostly along the coastline. partly cloudy conditions, but that fog, low clouds starting to develop and move inland. you can see that here in san jose. so, let's get right to it. temperatures today, upper 70s for the east bay. 61 in san francisco and 77 degrees out in the south bay and really nice conditions for today, once that sun breaks through the clouds. we'll have to wait until lunchtime here. tomorrow, slight warming and then that heat cranks late week. your seven-day forecast shows you that at the bottom of your screen and we'll show you why, coming up. right now, back to you guys. >> thank you, christina. check in with mike right now because there is something up with muni. >> definitely.

major delays reported system wide and continues to talk about this and to prepare for it because while we do have a number of muni drivers, a high number of drivers reporting in sick today. they're not saying anything official about what that action is called, just saying prepare for some delays and try to get more drivers to even out the system. right now major delays reported and some gaps in service. stay tuned for muni updates, as well. follow them on the transit site. looking at traffic and the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge all move very smoothly. we'll show you the overall look at the bay and that's a lighter volume of traffic right now. shifting to the summer schedule for a lot of folks at college and now many schools getting off for the summer and that means the folks are traveling into work a little bit later and impressive that commute. slowing now on a couple key spots and north 101 not so bad but we did see the first burst kick in a little later and second burst kick in and a little slow from 680 towards the airport. over here the tri-valley had a

good deal of slowing as we had a stall over at airway boulevard. the stall cleared from the lanes and very slow out of the altamont but not a big deal coming through. south 680 very slow right now. we do have a crash blocking the slow lane and still sounds like there are folks on the scene and no major injuries but a big slow down as folks are heading into san ramon and moves very smoothly right now and no problems towards the maze. you have a little slow down for the east shore freeway approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. live look out there shows you what we are talking about. all lanes are filled and metering lights are on. movement in the cash lanes and that is a good sign for the bay bridge. looks horrible if you don't typically take it. >> you can see the gap. that's huge. >> and in the north bay, a very light volume here, as well. you're pretty much at speed down towards that richmond/san rafael bridge. >> no chicken dance. >> that's right.

stories. a nationwide manhunt is under way for ryan chamberlain who is wanted after federal agents said they found explosives in his san francisco home. this man is considered armed and dangerous. two grieving fathers from that deadly rampage near uc santa barbara met for the first time over the weekend. the father of one of the victims and the father of the gunman say they will work together to end gun violence. president obama kicks off his four-day trip to europe in poland where he will meet with ukraine's president today. later this week, mr. obama will join russian president vladimir putin and other leaders to honor the 70th anniversary of d-day. this morning controversy as an american soldier held captive for five years is freed in exchange for five taliban prisone prisoners. "today in the bay" peggy bunker joins me and this is a long-awaited reunion and other people say the prisoner swap sets a dangerous precedent. >> that's the controversy under way right now as a lot of people

are looking and the only american being held by the taliban for five of their prisoners. formally held at guantanamo bay. this has created a new political uproar. the white house says time is running out for sergeant bergdahl and immediate action was necessary. now, look at the u.s. army medical center in germany. this is where sergeant bergdahl is recovering and transitioning out of his captivity. a long process for him and he has been held since 2009 and five long years in the hands of the taliban and medically it is reported that sergeant's medical condition was worsening and it was urgent they get him out despite a 30-day law requiring that lawmakers be alerted of their plans to do so. that 30 days did not happen. some negotiation with the taliban did take place to ensure bergdahl's release. >> a national security team made a determination that because of the mitigation that we can engage in with a third country

kutar, we believe this is not a security threat to the united states and there is sufficient mitigation to be comfortable with the transfer of those detainees to kutar. >> the white house statement on the issue of endangering u.s. citizens. these are the faces of the five detainees released from guantanamo. calling their release a victory and that they were released from the hand of the enemy. some say this could create a troubling precedent and encourage more kidnappings by the taliban. this release has been a long time coming for his family. >> freedom is yours, i will see you soon my beloved son. >> now, you see the family there, of course, so excited, laura, to get their son back and the father there, bob bergdahl. you see the long, shaggy beard that he grew. also learning the language of the taliban and other cultural references to help his son transition when he gets home. a very long process for him. >> no doubt. who knows what happened to him inside of there. >> exactly.

>> let's hope he heals well. despite what you heard, well, actually bergdahl release is welcome news. the mural says free bowe. it was painted back in 2013. nsa is up wag you and now recognizing your face according to a new report. "new york times" reports the nsa is capturing millions of images every day to feed facial recognition programs. facial recognition automatically identifies a person based on a digital image or video source. that information then stored in a database. the nsa defends the program but would not say whether the agency collects images of american citizens from social media like facebook. meanwhile, edwardsnowden indicated he would like to live in brazil. his temporary asylum expires in august and so far no word where

he will go next. brazil's foreign ministry said it has not received a formal request from snowden. now, in an interview with brazilian television, snowden said he would not offer documents to any country in exchange for that asylum. >> i wond er why he will. a live look outside this morning from the east bay. a little moisture in the air to start our monday morning. we'll appreciate it today as things, i think, will heat up by the end of the week. christina has a look at that microclimate forecast. >> good morning to you. happy monday. we're starting out the workweek. wait one moment before we get to the temperatures and we are starting out with comfortable conditions and there it is. we had to get it just right for you. gorgeous day in san jose. stratus clouds have made their way all the way inland and as a result our natural coolant, my friends. we're talking about temperatures in the 70s and one of those

days, just beautiful, picturesque all across the bay area except for right at the immediate coast and give and take, as you know. a lot of sunshine at the coast later on this week hot inland and for today, nice day shaping up. just about everywhere. except for right at the coastline where that june gloom is going to stick with you for most of the day. so, let's talk about june gloom. standard for late summer and early spring. this is traditionally what we see. that's why we gave it the clever flame. as we head throughout the day, today and tomorrow, cloudy overcast skies and cool coastal temperatures as a result and also you'll see a little bit of late night and morning fog and drizzle. overall, though, we're going to see a nice tradeoff inland and area of low pressure comes through and increasing onshore flow and that cool ocean air transported all the way inland and, in fact, all the way to the central valley. they call it the delta breeze and for today a lot of that natural ac. temperatures 73 degrees for the peninsula and 73 in the south bay for today and 61 in san francisco, so, keep that coat with you.

70 degrees in the east bay and 74 for the north bay and 74 out in the tri-valley. here is that warming trend. this shows you how hot it is going to get in san jose, up to 87 degrees by friday. we'll see the mid-90s in places of the tri-valley. san francisco, though, what a gorgeous trend for you by the end of the week we're talking about the 70s. let's check your drive, here's mike. >> they call it june gloom because it's june and there's gloom. all right, good. bay bridge toll plaza because this is the bay bridge and that's the toll plaza. so, we have the same name for traffic and weather, apparently. we're looking over here for a slower drive. the last ten minutes has seen a lot of traffic start to build. still no major drama coming off of that maze. let's look at the maps. pretty smooth flow down the east shore freeway and speeds coming down below 45 miles per hour. that's where the orange zone is here. the rest of your approach just your slowing past 24 on westbound 580 and all the way through the maze and to the toll plaza itself.

an earlier bit of debris right around 980 and looks like traffic is moving smoothly there. south 101 approaching 580 and slowing coming into novato. i want to call this north bay spot to you. westbound 80 approaching tennessee and have valahoe and the driver sounds like the person died right there as the crash happened, but a lot of activity on the shoulder now, even though all lanes are open, we do have the backup they have the big rig itself and the flatbed tow truck and a lot of stuff fell off the truck, as well. a chopper heading out there and live pictures, if we can get them for you, before the end of the show. over here westbound 580 shows a smoother drive and no big drama and the earlier stall has cleared and we have your traditional pattern really bottling up around north livermore and then folks start to divide out on other routes. peninsula easy drive here and south bay shows a little slowing and we had the bottle right here

past 680 and actually starting to clear and 87 little slowing on our sensors and live look at 101 and 680. look at that a very light volume of traffic as we approach the summer months, just a few schools off and we see the commute condense to later in the morning. might be what we're seeing right now, guys. seattle could bump its minimum wage to $15 an hour. the city council votes on the plan in just a few hours. minimum wage which would be the highest in the country would increase over several years. big businesses with more than 500 employees nationally would get three years to phase it in. small businesses would get more time. 6:21. still ahead "today in the bay" a test tester dinner. new claims from the woman at the center of the donald sterling saga. casey kasem is taken away from his home by ambulance. why his wife threw hamburger meat at kasem's daughter before paramedics drove away.

this morning investigators are trying to piece together a plane that crashed over the weekend killing seven people. among those killed the co-owner of the "philadelphia enquirer" the jet burst into flames after plunging down an embankment at the end of a runway in massachusetts. federal investigators are looking for the plane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data

recorder. casey kasem is getting medical treatment up in washington state. this is video of paramedics wheeling the 82-year-old to an ambulance sunday. his daughter, kerri, was with him during the ambulance ride but witnesses say kasem's wife, jean, threw raw hamburger meat at kerri in protest. kerri could have her own doctor examine her father. they were fighting over visitation and medical care for months now. the woman at the center of the donald sterling scandal says she was attacked by two men in manhatt manhattan. she was leaving a restaurant last night when two men approached her and punched her on the right side of her face. the suspect yelled slurs at her before she managed to run away. became an immediate sensations after sterling's comments went public. in the meantime, donald sterling attended services at a

predominantly black church in l.a. there you see the two men share a hug inside the church. sterling left the service without commenting on his billion dollar lawsuit against the nba. >> maybe they're doing some healing. 5:26 right now. the woman who became the country's most famous housekeeper on "the brady bunch" has died. >> ann b. davis passed away after a fall in her home in san antonio, texas. she played alice for five seasons in 1969. known for her trademark blue dress and apron and giving advice to the parents and kids. she fell and hit her head on saturday. davis was 88 years old. such a part of our childhood. >> completely. everybody wanted an alice, at least to make the pork chops and applesauce. still ahead, an aggressive plan to clean up the air nationwide. plus, a surprising new lead in the disappearance of madeleine mccann. a live look at the bay

technically it has been five years since the end of the recession. i hope your family feels that way. there's the bell on wall street over on the nasdaq. the folks from sunnyvale and alliance fiber optics product ringing the nasdaq. it's monday, june 2nd. this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. new this morning 400 insurgents fighting with border guards at a camp in eastern ukraine close to the border. several officers are injured. the attack reportedly started with 100 pro-russian insurgents and the number quickly grew to several hundred within a few hours. dozens of people are now feared dead after an explosion in northeastern nigeria and investigators believe boko haran

lit the fuse. one man that witnessed the blast said he saw at least 30 bodies. they are trying to impose islamic rule in nigeria. the terror group is responsible for kidnapping hundreds of nigerian school girls. those girls are still being held captive rvelsh today the obama administration is getting tough on global warming. a new plan to cut pollution from power plants by 30% by 2030. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live in washington, d.c. this is a pretty aggressive move, but not one size fits all, really. how much say will states have in this strategy. >> states will probably have quite a bit of say. part of the goal here is to encourage states to set their own standards and maybe even more stringent standards. take a look, we've confirmed that one hour from now the epa will announce these new standards for carbon emissions, setting national limits, dropping them by 25% by 2020. 30% by 2030.

but each state is going to have a different reduction of standards. they can choose how to implement it whether it's less coal, cap and trade. this is the situation where president obama last summer laid out his climate change plan. this is really the big part of that plan. and he's getting a lot of pushback already early on from capitol hill from house speaker john boehner and republican house speaker who says this is going to hurt american jobs. quoting the chamber of commerce mitch mcconnell, the minority leader on the senate side said jobs could be at risk on this plan. >> the first time the president has set a limit on carbon dioxide pollution. what do you think the political strategy is here? >> it is interesting because it is an election year. the key political issue, the key election issue is likely going to be jobs. the president is already arguing and did over the weekend, it will create more jobs. republicans arguing the opposite, it could end up being

an issue of who's got the better pr campaign to convince voters that acting on climate change is going to have an effect one way or the other. >> quite the plan, thanks so much, tracie. let's check your forecast this morning as we give you a live look outside. and the transamerica pyramid and the june gloom rolling in. your microclimate forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning. lots of sunshine and that june gloom means temperatures will end up cooler than average. and as you know, this is that time of year when the heat cranks across the bay area. today, tomorrow looking cooler than average and rather comfortable than we are going to turn up that heat. but not until the end of the week. let's get right to it. right now you can see a mix of low clouds and sun in san jose at 6:33 this morning. i want to tell you our futurecast because it shows you here that there is a storm system just off shore. that is what is ushering in that

stronger onshore flow and as the clouds cling to the coastline, westerly flow picks up and the ocean air is transported all the way to your inland valleys. i want to show you the difference right now between san francisco and san jose. getting a little bit of sunshine here and these clouds will clear entirely in your south bay valleys by lunchtime. right now in the 50s and we're headed towards the 70s and not a bad day. 78 for the east bay and 77 in the south bay and 73 on the peninsula. i'll let you know just how hot it is going to be in your microclimate coming up. right now back to you guys. >> thanks so much, christina. want to check in with mike because there was a big rig crash up near 80 on vallejo. quite a mess. >> happened at 3:30 this morning. this was off of the roadway. our chopper heading out to the scene and, unfortunately, can't get there. the and this is an issue i'll warn you, as well. north bay through petaluma into

101 and not a major concern for your drive. talking about west 80 approaching redwood. we see it on our sensors and all the way down towards redwood and approaching tennessee we have slowing because of the big rig that went off of the road and into a tree early in the morning resulted in that person dying as a result of the crash and also has that rig that has to be cleared from the shoulder and the rig itself whatever was carrying has to be offloaded as well. presents that slowing towards 780. but you're moving smoothly past the area after you get to the carquinez bridge. getting into san francisco a smoother drive across the bay and we'll talk about the slow downs in the city right now. muni delays continuing system wide and reporting gaps in service, meaning mass transit a system there talking about delays because of a lot of drivers reporting in sick this morning. talk about that more later on in the show. but warn folks to check that muni system and maybe bike to work today. that is a good option for you. a live look at the toll plaza

gridlock. teacher layoffs. and a 60 billion dollar budget deficit. that's what john perez faced when he became speaker of the california assembly. so he partnered with governor brown to pass three balanced budgets, on time. for the first time in thirty years. today, the deficits are gone and we've invested an additional 2 billion dollars in education. now john perez is running for controller, to keep fighting for balanced budgets. democrat john perez for controller.

new this morning, images out of portugal where police have sealed off an area looking for madeleine mccann. a little girl that disappeared while on vacation with her family back in 2007. british police have received permission to dig around the resort where the mccann family was staying when she disappeared. a british tourist who was in town on the night of her disappearance said it could have been an accident. there were a lot of holes in the road around the resort. her parents were dining at a nearby restaurant when she disappeared. in 2011 british police began a review of the case after appeal from her parents. the king of spain advocated the throne. spain's prime minister saying king juan carlos will give up the throne and crown prince felipe will become the king. the constitutional amendment needed for the change to take

they're looking for ryan chamberlain. he lives in san francisco and agents say they found bombmaking chemicals inside his russian hill apartment. "today in the bay" kris sanchez close to that apartment this morning and no word yet what prompted authorities to even search that apartment in the first place. >> no, laura. what they're saying right now is that it's related to a criminal investigation, though they're not saying what triggered that search warrant here at this russian hill apartment. but we can tell you they consider ryan chamberlain armed and dangerous, though not an imminent public threat related to those explosives. take a look at thhis picture, oe again. best known for social media savvy and also known for his work on high-profile political campaigns including that of lieutenant governor gavin newsom. this is what it looked like on the scene saturday and sunday as fbi agents along with san francisco police and fire swarmed the russian hill apartment and found those explosive materials inside the home. the fbi not saying what

precipitated the search, as we mentioned, only that it is part of a criminal investigation. the former head of san francisco's republican party said that he knew chamberlain well before he switched out of the republican party's affiliation and said he can't imagine what his plans are, but he hopes he'll turn himself in and that's what the fbi is hoping for, as well. >> have the explosives and all that, just totally mind boggle for me. well, i'm hoping that, you know, he turns himself in. i hope he doesn't get into any more trouble. i don't know what he's thinking. i don't know what he's been doing the last few years. what's going on in his head. but i'm just hoping this all comes out and that nobody gets hurt. >> if you have any sort of sightings or if you know him, please, let us know so that we can help apprehend him and, again, just bring him in so people are safe. >> ryan chamberlain is 6'3", 225

pounds and he has blue eyes and brown hair and the fbi says he was last seen south of san francisco yesterday driving a white nissan altima. the tricky thing here it may have license plate from california or it may have a license plate from texas. the fbi believes that he is traveling alone, but that he is considered armed and dangerous. so, if anyone comes across him, they should call 911 and alert the authorities. reporting live in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. we have more details now about the suspect ryan chamberlain. chamberlain graduated from iowa state university in 1993 and for a time he wrote music for the "des moines registrar." an article says chamberlain also worked as a promotional director for hooters and may have worked in senator chuck grasly's office, as well. the fbi has not said whether chamberlain still has ties to iowa or if he might be headedback to that area.

a cool start to our morning as we take a live look outside this morning. san jose, san francisco, san mateo bridge kind of spanning the bay area giving you glimpses out there. christina has a look at that microclimate forecast for us. >> overcast sky. good morning to you. hopefully you had a great weekend. happy to have you with us this morning. kicking off the new workweek with some very comfortable conditions out there. blanket of low clouds keeping temperatures pretty mild. we could be in the 40s, but mostly we're in the 50s. a couple isolated upper 40s out there, but only in the north bay this morning. a taking a live look at san jose and that june gloom is back, my friend. that will keep us cool later on today and same for tomorrow and we lose it as we kick off wednesday into thursday and the heat cranks as a result. but, hey, thanks for waking up with us on a monday. i know it could be hard to get back into the routine, but, yeah, weather's on your side. i want to show you the warming trend we have coming your way as we head throughout the week. the real weather story we're going to focus on.

inland valleys and sunshine by lunchtime and 70 for today and same for tomorrow. by wednesday in the mid-80s and then we're talking about a return of the upper 80s for thursday into friday. by the weekend, it's looking really questionable right now. whether or not we'll get this cutoff low. if we don't get it, temperatures will keep on climbing. if it does arrive, it looks like temperatures will come down a little bit. that's what we're watching for and waiting on as we head throughout the rest of the week. this morning temps in the 50s and headed towards the 70s all across your various microclimates. you notice on the seven-day forecast, though, the coolest day of the week and that's always there volie scrolling at the bottom of your screen. meanwhile 77. >> we start in the south bay and we'll start there, as well. northbound 101 and the commute starting to show the build. this is about half an hour later than we typically see any of this patern and we talk about that as you approach the summer vacations for more and more schools and tend to see that around the bay. looking to the maps, as well. and showing the extent north 101

and all showing the slow down over the last ten minutes and 280, reconfigure the averages. a traditional pattern and, again, a little bit later for this to be kicking in around the south bay. tri-valley moves smoothly and now all these folks heading southbound 680 through sunol and typical pattern and lighter flow of traffic and there's the -- set off distance kind of rippling back and the walnut creek interchange moves smoothly. 680 and 24. the rest of your bay moves nicely, as well. across the san mateo bridge and watch that toll plaza. we have reports of a fender bender there and now it sounds like all activity over to the shoulder. in san francisco, that's the top one. we're giving you a note system wide muni reporting delays and no express buses, all operating local. scott told you earlier, less drivers. a lot are calling in sick today.

that's the case. the cable car lines are not running. bus shutting in place, as well. tourists in town will not be able to ride the cable cars. the rest of your approach towards the bay bridge and a smooth drive coming over from oakland, but compressing down towards west 580 and little bit down the east shore freeway. the rest of your drive through the north bay moves smoothly from 101 and slowing south through san rafael and a live look out there and show you southbound 101 and the curve, everybody's got nice spacing. pretty much at the limit once you pass 580 and head down towards the golden gate bridge. growing controversy this morning as an american soldier is traded for five taliban leaders. "today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us now with more. peggy, some are saying this release actually endangers other soldiers in afghanistan. >> a lot of people are concerned about that, scott. republicans say the taliban operates on the currency of ransom money so this could encourage more hostage situations as our one and only

p.o.w. sergeant bowe bergdahr released for five taliban leaders. time was running out and they had to go get him. this is an army medical center in germany this is where he is recovering and transitioning out of his captivity. that will be a long process for him. held since 2009. five long years in the hands of the taliban. it was reported his medical conditioning was worsening. this despite a 30-day law that requires that lawmakers be alerted of plans a prisoner's release. some republicans say this has put other americans in danger. >> the number one way that al qaeda raises money is by kidnapping and ransom. we have now set a price. >> well, now, these are the faces of the five detainees released from guantanamo. omar released this statement calling their release a victory and that they were released

"today" show will continue our coverage from idaho coming up at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." >> hope he has a good recovery. a long-time champion of civil rights has died in her home in berkeley. died of natural causes yesterday morning. this is an image of her on the csu website where she received an honorary degree. she was there when malcolm x was shot in 1965. she rushed towards him and cradled his head on her lap. led to an iconic photo. during her lifetime, she also championed for japanese americans who were in turn during world war ii.

she was 93 years old. this morning, oakland police are keeping a close watch at an elementary school after a student was attacked on campus with a hammer. the suspect is a parent volunteer. >> hard to believe. it happened on friday in oakland. "today in the bay" christie smith is on campus. there will be police officers when the kids show up? >> that's what they're saying. actually, district officials think this may have been some sort of feud off campus that spilled over on to an elementary school campus. today oakland police will have an officer stationed here more as a precaution as families return to make them comfortable here in west oakland after what happened here on friday. now, what they're telling us is that this mom involved was apparently well known, her presence here very common because she was a volunteer. so, it didn't raise any eyebrows. but what allegedly happened here friday is pretty unbelievable.

a district spokesperson said this mom also has an 8-year-old on the school campus and she let a 9-year-old into a bathroom is the report they're getting when the students were outside and then allegedly started attacking this child with a hammer. >> our speculation at this time and this is based on very early investigation is that there was a feud between two families and this was an act of vengance or to punish the rival family. >> now, the mom was arrested on the scene and the girl taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. we're told that she was conscious and communicating when she left. a district spokesperson said the school is actually ordinarily very quiet and this week they will continue to work with students and staff helping them comprehend what has happened here. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." a stanford professor, meanwhile, out on a $500,000 bail after he was caught with a hand grenade in his carry-on luggage. this is the tsa photo of the

second world war hand grenade. they saw in an x-ray on tuesday when political science professor gary cox was boarding a flight at l.a.x. he tells "l.a. times" it was an honest mistake. he said his father used it as a paper weight for decades. after his father died, cox was bringing some of his father's belongings back home to palo alto. he never thought the grenade had explosive capabilities. the terminal evacuated and the bomb squad destroyed the device. the charges will likely be dropped. makeup ap tests will begin this morning. 400 students at the pleasanton school had just a week to cram for those makeup tests. last week the educational testing service, makeup testing will take place throughout the week. an update to a story that mike inouye has been reporting all morning.

muni riders told to expect major delays today. the san francisco mta tweeted the warning to riders earlier this morning and said it is working to balance service but said there could be gaps in service. cable cars not running, instead, buses are running on those routes. this comes after lots of workers called in sick. they're upset over ongoing contract talks. union members say the latest offer takes away from wages and benefits. muni workers are barred from striking. apple kicks off its annual worldwide developers conference in san francisco. ceo tim cook expect to kick things off at 10:00 this morning, but people already lined up outside waiting to get inside. the video was just shot a couple hours ago. apple is expected to announce it is getting into smart home devices which could allow your iphone to control your lights and security system, kind of a high-tech clapper. the company may also announce a health app that could connect to a smartwatch expected to be
