and the author who has just as many fans as they do, john green will be with us. >> allison sweeney is here from "days of our lives" with an announcement about "days of our lives." tune in. it is going to be big. >> big weekends for us. >> how was yours? >> frank and i have been, for nine years now, helping a wonderful family in greenwich named the morella family. two of their four children have a fatal illness and we have been trying to raise money for research for them because it is such a rare disease, all these years. so sweet dana passed away last august, i think it was. we wanted to do something extra special in her memory. so thursday night frank and i hosted a benefit at our home for the people that through the years have been the biggest supporters and there we are in the backyard. bambino got in every picture. >> of course. >> that's the family. if you look between me and their

little son andrew, that is kenny loggins himself. he and his girlfriend came, i thought they were going to just stay thursday night. they're still at my house. there we are hosting. they stayed until saturday afternoon and i tell you, i don't think he'll mind me saying, but he's 66 years old now and i've got to tell you something, he put on one of the greatest shows i've ever seen. it is amazing, if you ever get a chance to see kenny loggins in concert. we got home at 20 of 12:00. we have never seen a new year's eve, much less been -- that's us on the street outside our house because there were six fire engines all lined up. you think it is your house. it was our neighbors were doing some construction and a little fire, an electrical fire. but those guys, those firemen were so happy. they're getting pictures and autographs and kenny loggin and

years ago to meet this beautiful lady ann b. davis passed away. she was 88 years old. best known as alice on "the brady bunch," one of the sweetest ladies. won an emmy for a show years before. she fell. >> she did. they said she was fine that day, said good night, went in and i guess fell in the bathroom, and never gained consciousness. >> she was a woman of deep faith and so she's better off and i was better off to have had a chance to meet her. >> she said she never liked to clean or cook. in a "people" magazine interview, she said all of us wish we had an alice. i wish i had an alice. >> you want to do -- >> there is a new abc show called "sing your face off." celebrities perform as iconic music artists. so you have to -- they dress up and you have to guess who the celeb is. here is somebody doing elton john. let's see if we can guess the celeb.

i went to see the movie "chef" this weekend. i didn't even know what was going on. we showed up. the movie starts at 10 after 7:00. we showed up at a quarter until 7:00 thinking plenty of room. every seat was taken except we found two, like, in the front and we go there, it has got a great cast. scarlett johansson, john leguizamo, sofia vergara, robert downey jr. dustin hoffman. there is one scene which isn't in this thing, but he makes a grilled cheese sandwich. he slathers it with butter, different layers of cheese, the cheese is melting, he cut it in half and he takes a bite and the crunch is so loud in the theater that the entire theater goes, oh, my god. you see the cheese coming, literally the movie was so -- it made me -- we had a full meal before. we were starving after. it is a great movie. and it is called "chef." it is not everywhere, but if it

>> this summer -- we're going to put them everywhere because i'm creating a ping-pong nation is what i'm doing. but with all the talk about obesity and everything, it is really fun. >> you don't feel like you're working out. >> you don't feel like you're working out. we have been giving tables to schools in new york in the underserved schools and there is 14 schools now that have it as a scholastic sport. >> you're kidding. did you know it would be that popular in new york when you opened up? >> we didn't have a basement, i didn't go to camp, but everybody has had some experience. it was that suddenly everyone forgot about it. ping-pong is something you can play until you die. there are older players. not like basketball or baseball. >> every time my son comes home from california, the ping-pong table. >> and you play it facing each other, so it's a great date thing. it is really fun for quiet kids too. >> this movie is set in -- clearly in the '80s. >> down the boardwalk. is that fun to -- >> i think that -- well, ocean city, maryland, is kind of --

it's still in the '80s. this is where the director, writer, grew up and went for his vacations. and so it was fun to see all those little details he put in the script and to remember all of that. i think that's what makes it so special. >> we know why rad needed you. what did you need from rad? >> she's very isolated, this character. i think she doesn't get kids necessarily. what i like about it is instead of being serious about training him, she says to him, you know, the reason i dropped out of being professional ping-pong player is because i wanted to have fun and if you really are going to be serious, you have to spend a lot of time and i was not prepared to do that. i wanted to have a life. and that's what -- all athletes that are kids have to be burning with that desire to want to continue to do it. but it is really fun. >> so you have another film coming up with melissa mccarthy. >> yes.

i'm so thrilled. it is a dream come true, not just to have a movie made of your book, but to have a movie that i'm so proud of. that's the really rare thing. >> it came out the way you wanted then. >> it is a movie that really honors the story and perfectly captures the tone of the story and just, yeah, i feel like i won the lottery. >> when i first heard about it, i thought it was a cancer story and i was prepared to not feel great about it. when i saw the preview myself, it is such a heart warming story. tell us the other side of the tale. >> the love stuff. >> the love stuff, yeah. it is, it is not about cancer, it is about two young people falling in love for the first time, and one thing that i loved so much about it is that it is such validated love, beautiful love. it shows you don't have to be -- the first time you fall in love, you're, like, that's sweet, that's not real love, but it is real love and it is just as important as when you're 20, when you're 30, when you're 40, when you're 80. something i think is so

beautiful about it. >> you said -- you had to fight for this role or is this your dream cast? >> it is my dream cast. but she did have to fight for it too. >> how come? because she's a huge star. >> it wasn't even really fighting. i wanted the opportunity to audition. and josh, our director, rightfully so wanted to cast a 16-year-old, somebody younger, to portray the character more, i guess, authentically and thought i was a little too old for it. >> you two have a history of working together. >> i only do movies with shailene. >> we're exclusive. >> before you played brother and sister and this time you played lovers. how weird was that? >> it was helpful because we got close and we became very close friends just as hazel and gus star in the movie. and we were able to show up on set and trust each other and, you know, laugh at times, and we were so close. that's what you want. we already had that chemistry there. chemistry is chemistry.

>> why do you think 19 million people clicked on this? i'm one of the people who looked at the preview, why do you think so many people were interested in this trailer? >> i think a lot of people were anticipating it. >> waiting for it. >> i think that what people are really responding to is that, yes, these are kids living with illness, but also living with lots of other things. they also have full, rich, emotional lives. they're funny, very, very funny people, they're, you know, people who have desire and hopes and ambitions and that's, i think, what people responded to in the trailer and what they respond to in the movie. >> you guys, young hollywood actors, you seem to have stayed away from anything that is seedy and weird. and a lot of times we see, you know, we see magazines and see this one fell down drunk, this one -- you've chosen, it sounds like, a different path. is that right? >> it is kind of the only path that i -- >> we have so many interests that we don't have time to get caught up in that stuff.

>> you do you. like, i don't -- i'm just doing the best version that i know how to do for me and that doesn't -- not to compare to anyone else and the same you do for yourself and everybody has their own journey and their own path. >> but you actually gave up your house, right, for a family member and now you have one carry on case, with all your worldly belongings. is that true? >> yeah. i wasn't home all of last year and i just had my empty little humble abode. so my grams is living in it now, which is wonderful. and, yeah, i did. because when you travel and do movies you sort of -- you don't have anything and don't need anything and also the amount of traveling i was doing, i was, like what is all this excess, i just want to be able to soak up the moment and not have all this other clutter. >> that's such wisdom. >> you're freaking us out. >> i'm hoarding everything. oh, my god, a free pair of shoes, all this stuff -- >> gift bags. >> you have no idea, my room is a floor covered in nike boxes. >> you just marry my daughter,
