overnight. a navy jet crashed off the coast of southern california. the pilot was trying to land on the san diego based carrier the uss carl vinson. according to navy officials, a pilot ejected safely from the f-18 superhornet aircraft and was later rescued but the plane has not been recovered. the cause of the crash is under investigation. also last night, a military jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in california. it burst into flames setting several homes on fire. the accident happened late yesterday near imperial valley located about 90 miles east of san diego. witnesses say they heard an explosion before thick smoke started billowing into the air. the pilot safely ejected from the plane before impact. and there were no injuries reported on the ground. the marine corps issued a statement saying it will launch an investigation into what caused that crash. now, to more fallout from the bowe bergdahl release. u.s. senators were finally informed of the details surrounding the prisoner trade for five taliban leaders during

a closed door briefing. senators reportedly questioned the decision to go get bergdahl and the circumstances of his disappearance. retired general stanley mcchrystal tells yahoo! news it is too soon to charge sergeant bergdahl as a deserter. >> we have to wait and talk to sergeant bergdahl and get his side of the story. one of great things about america is we should not judge until we know the facts. and after we know the facts, we should make a mature judgment on how we should handle it. >> let's get the latest from nbc's tracie potts in washington, d.c. tracie, good morning. what are we learning about that closed door meeting this morning? >> reporter: we're learning that some lawmakers were completely convinced by the evidence that the administration presented and some were not and they were most vocal. after this briefing that lawmakers say really should have happened before bergdahl was released. sergeant bowe bergdahl appeared fairly healthy and alert in this taliban video, but in another

video shows the congress behind closed doors, lawmakers say he appeared tired and sick, barely responsive. perhaps drugged. some lawmakers agreed it was enough to justify president obama's quick order to get bergdahl out without consulting congress first. not everyone is convinced. >> proof of life is five months ago december, at that time he was impaired. >> there was no intelligence that indicated from a medical standpoint his life was in danger. >> reporter: senators briefed by the administration tuesday say they're also concerned about the five taliban leaders released in exchange for sergeant bergdahl. >> what this really does is return five very dangerous people to the fight against america. >> reporter: citing security concerns, bergdahl's hometown canceled the big celebration planned for later this month. >> i think it is just too soon in this process. i think there is a lot of emotions involved here. >> reporter: some of them strongly against a hero's

g-7 leaders threatened to impose tougher sanctions on russia if stability isn't restored. angela merkel said the leaders of the most industrialized nations are united in their stance. president obama reiterated america's firm commitment to the nato alliance, declaring an tack on one nato member is an attack on all. russian president vladimir putin was not invited to the summit, making it the first time the g-7 met without russia in 17 years. but french president francois hollande is set to host both president putin and obama tomorrow to commemorate the 70th anniversary of d-day. hollande scheduled two separate dinners with the leaders. a manhunt is under way for the man accused of killing three police officers and wounding two others. it happened overnight in canada. the royal canadian mounted police released this picture of the suspect, 24-year-old justin bjork. officials say he opened fire on the officers as they responded to reports of a man wearing

camouflage gear and carrying two weapons. police say he is armed and dangerous. they have blocked off several streets and warned residents to stay inside. wednesday marked the 25th anniversary of the deadly crackdown on protests around beijing's tiananmen square. in hong kong, tens of thousands gathered to remember the gruesome events that the chinese government tried to erase from history. tiananmen square itself was in lockdown yesterday. activists were detand and media were censors. on june 4th, they opened fire on student led protests and the exact toll of the crackdown remains unclear. a helmet cam captures the terrifying moment when a mountain biker is robbed at gunpoint. malcolm fox was ambushed by armed men while riding on a trail in south africa. they demanded his bike, cell phone, keys, sunglasses, but curiously enough they paid no attention to the camera recording their every move. he uploaded the video to youtube

with hopes it would help nab the bandit and it looks like he was successful. all the criminals were identified and have since been arrested. high winds caused a massive freight train derailment in northeast kansas early wednesday. the union pacific train was bound from arkansas to wyoming with 134 empty coal cars. that's when a tornado warning stopped it in its tracks. 52 cars blew over. fortunately no one was injured. bill karins has your thursday forecast. talking about the winds there, huge freight train and then cars. granted they were empty, but still. >> yeah, you think how heavy they are. they have wide sides, you know, a lot of surface area for the wins to push up against and it happens a couple of times every year. it is still incredible just to picture the force and power. kansas is at it again this morning. wichita, kansas. this is what you wake up to. a severe thunderstorm with 60 to 80-mile-per-hour winds and ping-pong ball sized hail right

over the top of you. so this complex in kansas has been moving across the state, and it looks like it is headed for eastern kansas shortly. severe weather today, if we have tornadoes, really bad storms, we have storms this morning, that storm complex will dive all the way down to the mississippi and alabama later on today. as far as the west is concerned, hot day yesterday from north texas to southern new mexico all the way through southern arizona. just continues. and it looks like it will stay hot for a while. we're 78 this morning to start your morning in phoenix. we are under an excessive heat warning and excessive heat watches for the vegas area too. so bottom line is it is going to be very warm and will stay that way for a while. that's your national forecast.
