the man was found overnight. "today in the bay" bob redell is live along that road in san jose. bob, what is the latest? we understand police could be out there for a while. >> definitely into the daylight. based on the conversation we had with one officer, the public information officer with san jose police is down the road gathering information. hopefully get more details. but what we know right now is that someone called 911 earlier this morning and reported that there was a body here on percy road. officers arrived around 1:20. what they found was this man down on the ground, unconscious, not breathing and according to police had visible injuries. what the injuries were they did not specify and they haven't told us yet how this person died. but they are treating this as suspicious. so suspicious that within the past hour the san jose unit has come out here to start their investigation to figure out what happened to this man. a man they have not identified

yet found dead around 1:20 this morning here on percy road. if you're not familiar, this is a road that's a two-lane road that goes right up against the fo foothills here in south san jose. it does have street lamps but the street lamps are not lit and it's not clear if they were lit at the time when this person was found. it could is been a dark road out here at 1:20 in the morning. bob redell "today in the bay. quaet ". >> thanks, bob. a developing story at 5:02. authorities going door-to-door searching for a man they say opened fire. "today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with more. this man, sounds like, very dangerous. >> absolutely. armed and dangerous. police in the canadian town of moncton tells residents to keep doors and windows locked while they continue their search for a

24-year-old. this is normally a quiet residential subdivision that was shaken to its core last night after the shootings began after 7:00 p.m. the whole neighborhood going into lockdown mode after police sent out this tweet with a picture of this allege shooter here. the picture very frightening. you can see dressed in camo from head to foot and two rifles draped over his body and backpack carrying who knows what. neighbors couldn't believe what they were seeing. >> we just came outside and my daughter said police in the area and we noticed that there was a lock down on the street and they wouldn't let anybody in or out and they were turning vehicles around. taken an injured officer away and the lady looked like she was really hurt. >> this kind of violence is just unheard of in this quiet southeastern city. 300 miles northeast of maine here in the u.s. shootings of this nature are incredibly rare in canada. officers found themselves emotional just talking about this. >> this is a terrible loss and a

tragedy for the families and for all of us here in the city of moncton. we hope that this suspect will be taken into custody and brought to justice. >> now, the police shot are member of the royal canadian police. they have not seen violence like this since 2005 when five were killed in alberta. we'll look into this more and keep bringing you updates this morning. back to you. >> thank you, peggy. a police officer will spend the day in the hopes of deterring the kind of threat that ended class early yesterday. two threats were phoned into the school located between interstates 880 and 980 in oakland. the first came early in the morning. the school was evacuated buns students were returned once police gave the all clear. the school got another phone threat and sent everyone home early. pg&e may face charges with

the deadly connection. the utility company told nbc it is waiting for federal prosecutors to file a superseding. it's not clear what the new charges are. in april they were indicted on charges it knowingly violated pipeline safety laws. now on to your microclimate weather forecast. meteorologist christina loren joining us. what is the weather looking like today? >> looking on the hot side, sam and laura. good morning to you. but, hey, it's june in the bay area and it could be worse. i have to tell you, temperatures will soar as we get into that all-important weekend. so close to it now, my friends. if you picked the right microclimate to situate yourself in. i can tell you right now, looking good at the coast and nice around the inner bay. this is a place you probably want to avoid at all costs. that's the extreme east bay. if you live out here, you'll be using your ac.

the great part about living here in the bay area, though, you only have to drive about 100 miles at the most to get to that cool ocean air. as we head throughout the day today, we'll see that. as we head throughout the weekend, it will get cut off. two sides to the weekend coming your way. that heat will crank as we get into next week we're in the stretch of it. for today, 50s to start and 80s and 90s to finish just about everywhere, except for the coast. we will take you to that weekend forecast in just a few moments. right now, 5:06. here's mike and your drive. >> a warning with christina's note about the warm weather and the beautiful coast, watch highway 17 and 92 half moon bay or santa cruz. looking over here towards the beach right here at the bay bridge toll plaza. had a few cars backed up that had just cleared. no clouds clearing from that side of the bay, as well. the bay bridge not so much of an issue and the volume for 580 west that is the one kicking up. your maps show a little slowing

earlier. and the speed sensors coming in down towards the yellow zone and this area, as well. holding up by the time we get to livermore, a smooth drive and heading north through san ramon and a construction crew just north of there and we'll track that and that's a norm al for that portion of the tri-valley. san francisco nice drive along the peninsula and the north bay nothing unusual, guys. we'll send it back to you. >> visions of grander going to santa cruz, a reality for many people in the bay area, muni says "things are looking better this morning" as most of its workers are expected to be back on the job. this follows three days of sick calls. all services back to normal, this includes the cable car lines. workers are in the middle of a contract dispute with muni. since workers are not allowed to strike technically, they decided to call in sick as a kind of

transport. saying the mass sick calls are essentially illegal. moreb for more problems for christie smith is live on the carquinez bridge where newly installed seismic joints showing signs of wear and tear. good morning. >> good morning, sam and laura. this crack showed up after less than ten years of use on a joint system that was basically supposed to last about twice that long. it expands and contracts during temperature changes and most importantly key in keeping carquinez bridge together in an earthquake. that joint is similar to the dozen or so used on the new eastern span of the bay bridge and, apparently, what happened here is that heavy use by big trucks may have played a role in what happened in the carquinez bridge. the issue was found recently during an inspection. cal trans saying it will go ahead and replace a dozen of these joints at a cost of $1 million, according to chronicle.

well, this morning you should be keeping an eye on pandora's stock price. the reason why the tech company finds itself as the focus of a justice department investigation. the doj is looking into the fees of pandora and services like it pay songwriters. it has led to multiple lawsuits. the reason pandora is at the center of it all because it pays much less to stream music than other companies do. bloomberg is reporting that pandora pays 4% of music revenue to songwriters comparing that to spotifiy that pays 12%. the grocery store chain has brought in new leadership and injection of cash in order to restructure. mi pu mi publo will be led by the company's chairman. go pro bringing in the big guns as it compares to ipo. the san mateo company has hired

weekend, if you have one. very hot air on the way and see our winds driven off shore and we could see elevated fire danger and that's what we're watching for as we get into the weekend. 70s at the coast and stretch of heat extends into next week. let's check your drive, here's mike. >> give you a clear look at the north bay where traffic moving very smoothly. a lot of folks like to drive earlier from the north bay because it takes a while to get from petaluma to the south bay and we have friends that travel that route. smooth drive for them and doing okay across the richmond, san rafael bridge. as well as 680 heading towards the carquinez bridge have cleared without any problem for the commute. over here in san francisco, a note for muni riders. back to normal service and route. our spokesperson called us earlier and said, we have everything going on now. people call in sick every day and get us specific numbers and no major delays expected. we're watching the rest of the

transit agencies close. the rest of your bay moves very smoothly and a light volume of traffic and a little slowing showing up towards mission boulevard in fremont and slowing at dublin interchange and don't worry about 680 itself coming out of san ramon. this is the steady flow in towards livermore for the build. live look at the san mateo bridge and westbound as your commute a smooth drive, flat section and high rise and the low clouds not a problem for visibility. we'll send it back to you. have you heard about this, mike. east bay law enforcement coming together to try to stop a dangerous flash mob of teens. teens run wild in the streets terrorizing people. the dangerous trend is happening all over the country. this is cell phone video from chicago. local police say there were three attacks close to the bayfair mall. the most violent was on monday. >> forcibly took the shoes and the smartphone from those kids.

>> nearby san leandro high school has beefed up security and sent notices home to parent. a thief is under arrest this morning thanks to a san ramon woman who took a stab at law enforcement herself. when they came back from a hike they found their car had been burglarized and purse and cell phone gone. the victim used an app called find my iphone and started tracking the phone. the neighbor says the victim's father was at the house, took pictures of the suspected thief. >> there was a guy like, you know, poking around our court. and then he figured that might be the one. so, he took a picture of the car. >> some pretty quick thinking there. the suspect later identified as dustin fryburger was arrested around the corner from the house. they found the purse and the r

o with this state and other western states suffering from severe drought conditions they fear this wildfire season could be one of the worst in years. the department of agriculture and the international association of firefighters all will be testifying today. meanwhile the senate intelligence committee will also hold a hearing on a bill designed to reign in government freedom act. supposed to stop the nsa bulk collection of phone records, but the bill still allows for data collection of internet communication. they are urging senators to put stricter language into that bill. among the ceo signing an open letter to the senate, google's larry paige, facebook mark zuckerberg and yahoo! marissa mayer. tons of big names there. one year ago today the news began reporting of the nsa surveillance of those phones based on leaks by edward snowden.

transamerica pyramid there in the center of your screen, you can. not too hazy out there. warm up on the way for this thursday, june 5th. this is "today in the bay." and a very good thursday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. investigators are still walking a dark two-lane road looking for clues to help them figure out how a man ended up dead in the middle of the street. this man was found on percy road overnight and "today in the bay" bob redell is live along that road and we understand you just had a conversation with police. what did they tell you? >> within the past 60 seconds san jose police tell us they're looking into whether or not this was a hit and run. the man was found face down early this morning about 1:20 down the road on percy road and officer morales with san jose

police tell us his body was found face down partially on the side of the road and partially in the road itself. there are marks nearby, possible skid marks indicating maybe that this man was hit and that the driver didn't stop. the reason why they're not 100% on this is for a couple reasons. those marks could be random marks that were from a prior incident and also waiting for the coroner to come here. the coroner has not turned the body over to take a look to see what kind of injuries this person has. when the officers arrived, this person was unkaupconscious and breathing. there were visible injuries, but, again, not sure if those are consistent with a hit and run or something else. the bottom line, this is a suspicious death and that's why the homicide unit is out here trying to figure out exactly what happened to this man, again, found around 1:20 this morning. the man does have an i.d. on him and trying to follow up if that i.d. is, of course, him. they describe him as hispanic, a man in his 30s. again, suspicious death here and

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with more on the story and, peggy, police say they think the man is still in the neighborhood. >> which is pretty frightening for this subdivision. imagine a quiet canadian town, the town of moncton. they're telling residents to keep their windows and doors locked and discourage them to drive through the neighborhood while they continue their search. police say he shot and killed three officers and injured two more. this is normally very quiet and it is a subdivision that has just been shaken to its core after the shootings began last night after 7:00. the whole neighborhood went into

all of us here in the city of moncton. we hope that this suspect will be taken into custody and brought to justice. >> now, once again, they've been looking all throughout the evening and police are saying the members of the royal canadian mounted police are known as mounties. they haven't lost a single mounty since 2005. as for the town of moncton they ihaven't seen a single homicide this year or the year previous. something they're grappling with. we see things like this especially in big cities. >> to think he's on the loose and his motivation. >> and also a local there. many people there say they know him. >> how sad. >> we'll be praying for that community. thank you very much, peggy. the family of an 18-year-old woman killed by a sheriff deputy has hired an attorney while several agencies investigate the shooting. yesterday what started as a pray prayer vigil turned into an

angry protest in half moon bay. friends and family gathered in front of the sheriff's substation demanding answers. her family says on tuesday night they called 911 when the mentally ill woman armed with a knife refused to take her medication. a deputy shot and killed her outside the home when she lunged at him with a knife. her friend don't believe she deserved to die. >> all we ask is for justice to be done because i don't find it fair for that to happen. there could have been other methods instead of just shooting her. i mean, what are the taser guns for? >> we have deputies that were responding to a scene with the information that we have somebody that's acting in a psychotic manner, armed with a knife, won't put it down even for her own family. >> the deputy who shot the woman is on standard pay administrative leave right now while the district attorney's office investigates that. no word whether the family plans to file a lawsuit, as well.

5:35. leaders of the va hospital in palo alto are holding a meeting to make sure the peninsula facility is not like other va hospitals across the country. meeting comes just days after a scathing report found 1,700 veterans using a va hospital and they were kept on secret wait list with the majority waiting more than two weeks to be seen. the report cited similar problems at va hospitals nationwide. established patients usually have to wait five to six days to be seen at the palo alto facility. in the meantime the acting va secretary will visit the phoenix facility today. sloan gibson will meet with staff members and talk about the allegations that numerous veterans actually died waiting to get appointments. gibson who took over friday after eric shinseki resigned said his department reached out to veterans who were placed on those secret waiting lists. we are edging so close to the official start of summer now. will we see esummer's

degrees for the north bay and meanwhile 70 in the city by the bay. your full forecast showed you how much hotter as you get into this weekend. first, a sneak peek at your thursday drive back here to help get you around the problem. >> all right, christina, a peek at the bay bridge toll plaza where cash lanes on both sides of this fastrak lanes. your typical pattern and a lighter volume of traffic around the bay this week and probably see the metering lights turned on in the next 10 to 15 minutes, as well. no problems off the berkeley curve, that's great news. as we look at our maps, see the flow of traffic and great for the east shore freeway and 24 out of lafayette and around olympic reports of debris in the lanes and it happened a while ago and no updates from chp and i want to warn folks heading to the walnut creek interchange. the muni service restored back to its normal route and no delays expected. our spokesperson called us and said 45 people called in sick today and they typically have

welcome back, everyone. it is 5:41. within the last ten minutes, we just learned general motors will likely force out more than a dozen employees. it all stems from the internal investigation into the faulty ignition switches. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill with the very latest. good morning, tracie. >> laura, good morning. one of those employees is the lead engineer who designed that faulty ignition switch. he's beenen paid leave until this investigation was over one of two engineers waiting for the result. in just about 15 or 20 minutes, the ceo of gm mary barra is expected to address employees and then later hold a news conference about what the results are of their internal investigation. we are hearing from sources, the detroit news heard from some of their sources that a number of people may not be named but how

many people are leaving the company today, some have already retired and less for other positions and the report will be painful and have a detailed chronology of the last 10 to 12 years and why gm did not act sooner before millions of cars had to be recalled and 13 people were killed. but critics, they're not satisfied by this internal investigation done, by the way, by gm's own attorney, an attorney that represented the company before. there are other investigations going on, criminal investigat n investigations and state investigations. federal grand jury and congress is still looking into this and mary barra back here at some point and this time more forthcoming, we're told, in her answers. >> well, the american people want to know, yet alone the families who lost loved ones, too, tracie. thank you very much. and new concerns this morning for drivers who use bay area bridges. a new seismic joint on the carquinez bridge is showing

signs of wear and tear. that type of joint is similar to the joint on the new span of the bay bridge, that's a bit disconcerting. christie, these joints are supposed to last at least 20 years, right? >> good morning to you, sam. this problem we are talking about popped up after less than ten years of use, heavy use by cars and trucks. the seismic expansion joint is cracking on the carquinez bridge through the vallejo side. we drove the bridge westbound this morning, the new side. the problem area is in the slow lane, which sees heavy use by big rigs and an inspection recently revealed cracking under the joint system that is designed to help keep the bridge together in a quake. caltrans will go ahead and replace 15 of them at a cost of $1 million. that according to "chronicle" this morning. the eastern span of the new bay bridge has a dozen joints that are kind of similar that cal

inland it's nice and warm and nice and mild. we're at 58 degrees. good morning to you in livermore and out in the tri-valley, that is where it is going to get hot. if you live out there, you know what the summertime means in the bay area. inland valleys getting into the triple digits this weekend and fog developing in san francisco tells you the story why it's not going to get quite that hot today. low 70s and this weekend expecting the 80s and even in san francisco look at the beautiful start over the south bay and lingering cloud cover and now that the sun is up, that will all burn off rapidly and your temperatures will warm up by mid-day already expecting the 70s in the south bay. round out the day 86 degrees here and 91 for the east bay and 70 degrees, what a lovely day in san francisco. pull out at&t park. giants back at home for a ten-game home stretch as of tomorrow. get your tickets because it is going to be really, really nice out there at at&t park. triple-digit heat will come on

private meetings with vladimir putin who was frozen out of the summit. it's unclear if president obama will meet with putin, as well. new video into our newsroom of a devastating fire on staten island. 23 of those hurt were firefighters. the department says everyone should be okay. about 200 firefighters spent much of the night putting water on the flames, which consumed two residential buildings. witnesses say a man screaming from a window tossed two small children down. the military is investigating two separate crashes involving military jets. the latest happened overnight off the coast of san diego. the u.s. navy jet was reportedly trying to land on to an aircraft carrier, but, instead, crashed into the water. the pilot did manage to eject and was not seriously hurt. in a fiery incident earlier in the day, a marine carrier jet crashed into a neighborhood in the city of imperial, east of san diego. this is cell phone video of the

aftermath. in it you can hear people yelling to get away, afraid that that wrecked jet would explode. smashed into at least one home and set another two on fire. the scene looks bad as you see here, but the pilot of that plane also safely ejected before the jet went down. he landed down the street from the wreckage. the cell phone video shows people tending to him with his parachute still attached. we're told he is doing fine this morning. no one on the ground was hurt and the jet was stationed in yuma, arizona, about 70 miles from the crash site. >> it's amazing no one was hurt, right? >> amazing. 5:50 right now. predicting the world cup winner. the video game says the u.s. will make an early exit. we'll have to check in on that and maybe they know something we don't know. in the meantime -- >> a lot more news ahead, stick around.
