that is the investigation into a frightening military plane crash in imperial, california. mike, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, good morning, matt. marine personnel from the third marine aircraft wing are working with local first responders right now on what is now a cleanup operation. but there is no early hint to explain why this crash happened barely a month after a similar incident involving a harrier jet. >> get out, get out, get out of the way! >> reporter: it was just after 4:20 afternoon when calls came in about the fireball in imperial, california. >> it looks like a house is on fire fofzi and cabo and cross. >> reporter: it was a harrier some 70 miles away. though three houses were

turn him over to see if there are other injuries to give him better idea of how he died. the initial indication is that this might have been a hit and run because he was partially on the road and also because there are tire marks there. but they don't know for sure and because they don't know for sure, that's why their homicide unit has been out there. because it's a suspicious death, the homicide unit has been investigating this. if the coroner says, yes, it was a hit and run, they'll turn it over to traffic investigation. again, a man who they say is hispanic, possibly mid-30s found face down dead here on piercy road. reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. want to check the forecast now and things are heating up today, christina. >> they certainly are, laura. definitely noticeable for today. you have to use your ac if you live in the inland valley locations. 86 degrees hot day and 83 for the east bay and the cool spot will be the coast as per usual this time of year. temperatures, though, i've got to tell you, they will get even

>> i thought it was a scary game. i didn't think it was a danger where someone would get hurt. >> reporter: at horng middle school where the girls were classmates, kouncounselors haven available to talk to students. >> there's a concern, i know parents are concerned still. >> reporter: on school websites that feature the slender man story are blocked. should parents do the same? >> this particular character or particular site isn't the issue. you fact that you have tween girls that are a very vulnerable and impressionable age that became obsessed. >> reporter: they recommend parents monitor their kids and help filters. we skyped with mom blogger amy hatch who was shocked to discover both her 9-year-old and kindergartner knew all about slender man well before last saturday's crime.

. a lot of interest this saturday on the belmont stakes as california chrome tries to become the first horse since 1978 to win the elusive triple crown. a dramatic run that his jockey has been through before. so how do you prepare for the race of your life for a second time? here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: in horse racing a single crown is hard enough. >> california chrome will win the kentucky derby! >> reporter: and a double crown is twice as tough. >> california chrome has won the preakness! >> reporter: but a triple crown -- that has not happened in 36 years which is why all eyes are now on california chrome. >> good luck in the triple crown. >> reporter: and his human hat victor espinoza. is california crohn that horse?

>> i hope though, crossing my fingers. >> reporter: with california chrome on the east coast awaiting the belmont stakes espinoza got in top form on the west coast. his routine is strict. building his muscles to control the horse and building his lungs so he can go the distance. but much of his training centers around riding other horses so he can stay on the top of his game. do you figure out pretty quickly if you guys have a good feel for each other. >> yes, yes. >> reporter: he said with california chrome, the bond was instant. >> i let him know i'm in control. i'm the boss. he has to do what i say. >> reporter: now espinoza is one victory away from history a harrowing position he knows all too well. you've been in this spot before, one win away from the triple crown, what happened in 2002? >> everything went wrong is what happened. >> reporter: at the belmont stakes, his horse war emblem stumbled out of the gate.

a very good morning, i'm laura garcia-cannon. a developing story in san jose this morning. the coroner arrived that scene to try to help homicide investigators figure out how a man was dead in the street. police say he had visible injuries and right now they say it could have been a hit and run based on tire marks near the scene. piercy road in that area is still shut down. some relief for frustrated commuters in san francisco. all services back to normal, including cable cars. for the last three days hundreds of workers had to call in sick to protest a proposed labor contract. that is really great news for those commuters, too. as well, tourist comes to the bay area, want to check in with mike. >> the cable cars are back in service and they can use those if they're out of service,

obviously. a smooth flow of traffic getting into san francisco and the lighter volume around the bay and the san mateo bridge westbound jamming up along the west section and let's look at the map and slow drive to the peninsula where 101 jammed up through san mateo and a lighter volume overall for the bay area. south of the dumbarton bridge and in the northbound direction through san jose and around the airport have cleared and better flow, christina, but great weather, at least. >> yeah, really nice weather, especially at the coast today. mike, that's going to bring a lot more traffic towards the beaches as we get into this afternoon. especially by the weekend, the temperatures climb even more so and low 90s in the east bay and 70s in san francisco and 86 in the south bay and temperatures are going to climb as we head through saturday and sunday. look at these numbers. 93 in the south bay on sunday and 75 in san francisco. if you can get out there this weekend, perfection in santa cruz at 80 degrees. back to you, laura. >> no, let's go to the beach.

injuries. this is the second time in a month that a jet out of the same base has crashed. the obama administration tried to fi yet the controversy over the prisoner swap that freed sergeant bowe bergdahl by calling senators to a late-night briefing wednesday. they were shown video that said to indicate that bergdahl's health was in jeopardy. some came away skeptical. while bergdahl remains at a military hospital in germany a homecoming rally in his hometown has been canceled because police have said they don't have enough resources to handle any protests that might arise. >> the secret service is brushing aside concerns that president obama's security may have been jeopardized during his workout at a hotel gym this week. these images posted online apparently recorded by someone just steps away from someone in a warsaw hotel. all guests had been screened, agents were there, and it's no different than when the

great artist? >> to me, he's a great artist. and i know i'm partial, but, you don't know do this if you're half into it. this is real. >> and critics at the time he was doing most of his paintings thought so, as well? >> yes. >> but his work was soon overshadowed by the abstract and pop movement. styles that de niro senior couldn't understand. and periods of depression in journals. >> i fear i can hardly wash my brushes which will be standing for days. >> your dad had great success for a period of time, and then things slowed down for him. so he decided to maybe reinvent himself or reconnect, and he moved to paris. but before you made him come back to the united states, you tried to the belt of your ability, to kind of help him and promote him. like a door-to-door salesman,

knocking on gallery doors? >> literally, you carried it to a gallery, this is my father's work, it's great, they'll see. we're going say he just came off the street, these two americans coming in. so that didn't go very far. >> he writes about that time. in one reference to you he says something to the effect you saved his life once, and you're helping him again. did you understand that's the way he felt about you at the time? >> well, as i say, he was a very loving father, so it's not surprising that he would -- say that. >> did you grow closer during those times? >> we were -- we were -- in some ways, i could say we were never not close. you can -- be close to people and not always see them. ♪

>> another thing that is revealed in this documentary, your dad was gay. >> yes. >> being a painter is an affection like being a homosexual one has to have the strength of work without the thought of recognition before or after death just to accept life or death without attachment. >> it was never something that anybody brought up. do you wish you'd talked to him about it? >> i could have talked to him about it. i didn't feel it was right. that's his business. ♪ >> a great space here. >> thanks. >> it really is. >> de niro junior is on a mission to keep his father's legacy alive. 21 years after his death, his new york studio sits untouched. a shrine to the man who once worked here. how long do you plan on keeping this place just the way it is? >> i just -- i don't know. i can't let it go.

"thank you god for bobby's having turned out so well."

beach this morning. good morning to you. >> thanks, matt and savannah. omaha beach. 70 years ago, frank levito who was 18 years old at the time landed on this beach in a higgins boat, on a landing craft. he didn't want to put down the ramp for very good reason. and now he's brought his entire family back to revisit that terrible day. ♪ >> on june 6th, 1944, we made the invasion of europe. i was skinny. >> reporter: frank devita was 18 when he dropped out of high school in his senior year to enlist in the coast guard. >> when the japanese bombed pearl harbor, everyone wanted to do their duty. ♪ my boat was the "u.s.s. samuel."

>> d-day is here. >> that morning, we were all sea sick. we saw the beach, one particular machine gun took a liking to us and was hitting my boat. he was shooting down at us. it was like hitting fish in a barrel. my job was to drop that, i knew when i dropped that they would come to the boat. they said drop the ramp, and they believe i didn't hear. he said -- drop the ramp. so we had 30 men on the boat.

three men made it to the beach. they were all older, and some were dead. with the solace, people think that when a man is dying they don't ask for god. the last words they say before they die, mama. mama. >> reporter: devita has never shared some of these painful memories, even with his children until now. >> how far down the beach? >> about a couple of miles. >> reporter: it was an emotional journey back to omaha beach where i caught up with frank devita and four generations of his family. >> all of these people came here for me? >> well, it's an honor for them to have you as a father and grandfather. and i think the other important thing is it's an honor for them to come here. you went back, survived the war, and turned out this wonderful

family. what's the lesson for these generations of the devita family to come here and revisit this? >> love your freedom. because that's what we fought for. we fought for the freedom. >> reporter: now he feels a duty and honor to speak for those men who died that day. >> these kids were 18, 19 years old. they're never going to see their families. they're never going to hold their grandchild in their grandchild in their arms. my family said i'm a hero. i'm not a hero. when you look at the cemetery above omaha, those are the heros. those are. my heros. >> 70 years and the men who gave

so many. >> sacrifice for families. they changed the course of history. >> by the way, there are live a very good morning to you. it is 8:26 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update now to a developing story we're following. san jose police now calling the death of a man whose body was found in the street a homicide. his body was found just after 1:00 this morning on percy road near hellier and tenant avenues. the police say the man has at least one stab wound. so far, police say there are no suspects and no motive. this is the city's 18th homicide of the year. switching gears, let's check that morning commute with mike. >> we're slow rolling through palo alto right now. we've seen a big build southbound 101 here, we see the sensors reading red, as you come out of menlo park and down toward that area. and northbound, slow typical out of mountain view, same for west 237 into the area.

pharrell. meanwhile, while sergeant bowe bergdahl continues to recover in germany, his hometown has canceled a homecoming celebration scheduled for him. they said police don't have enough resources to handle any potential problems that could arise because of any spotlight on the case of sergeant bergdahl. the town has been getting complaints, angered that six soldiers alleged died trying to recover bergdahl accused of walking off his base. his family and a spokesperson saying we can now celebrate privately. the mayor of hailey, idaho, urged residents not to come to a conclusion. and the freedom of sergeant bergdahl and the five taliban soldiers released. late last night, members of congress received a briefing. senators say they received a

proof of life video of bergdahl. some say it convinced them bergdahl's health was in jeopardy. but others were skeptical of that. we've got t"the washington post saying that bergdahl looked sickly in the video. a senator from new york saying i would definitely think it had an impact on the president when he served, he served in the navy. senator joe manchin, a democrat west virginia left, according to "the new york times" visibly angry. his quote was, i think we can all agree we're not dealing were a war hero here. that's senator manchin, democrat from west virginia. the story gets bigger. more complicated. more questions come out and the white house has a lot to answer for. >> absolutely. and to have those senators lead

out not along party line saying they have more questions. at majority who criticized were republicans but it was a bipartisan group of people who were not satisfied with that video. >> well, i think what's clear, as we talked about yesterday, he's going to obviously get a mental evaluation. he's undergoing treatment right now. when he comes back home, they're certainly going to be wanting to know the answers to those questions. >> chuck hagel did speak with the family yesterday. and he has not had contact with the parents. >> interesting, general mcchrystal came out and said, there may be more to this story. let's wait until the facts come out which is what the white house has been pleading for. again, there are so many pieces to this story that don't make sense. there will be a lot of answers. switching gears when you go to the gym, put your headphones

were asked to stop. they were taking them and released them. "men's journal" has gotten in the story criticizing the president's workout such as slow down, really engage your core muscles. >> when you only have a half hour to work out, how much time -- >> they're like, move slow. >> try something new, sir, we got tired watching you work out. "men's health" as suggested that the president enlist the secret service for a group class. >> meanwhile we have seen presidents over many years working out getting physical. president clinton loves to jog. >> and then that looks good. >> and george w. bush loved riding a mountain bike. >> yeah. >> and george h.w. used to play golf on public courses. secret service said that actually was a nightmare scenario for them. >> all the trees. >> well, yeah, being able to

so rich, creamy, and delicious. only philadelphia®. good morning. it's 9:26. i'm sam brock. breaking news right now in sunnyvale, where one of our nbc bay area reporters said he woke up this morning to the sound of more than a dozen gunshots. this is happening on north fair oaks near maude avenue near several schools. right now we have derek shore joining us on the line. derek, tell us what you see out there. >> reporter: well, good morning, sam. yeah, i actually live just down the road here, and i had heard sirens throughout the morning, wondering what was going on. really not bothered to wake up, and then we heard a number of gunshots just ring out throughout the street. and by that time, we came out to see a ton of police activity. a number of new police officers coming to the scene, including santa clara officers out here.

followed by that, we saw a fire truck and an emt and ambulance come in, but that ambulance eventually would turn around, leading me to believe at this point there may be someone dead after this shooting. i do know officers were already on the scene there, so this could be seen as an officer-involved shooting. who was shot, that was unclear at this hour. whether it was a suspect or an officer. i can tell you, based on what i'm looking at now, it doesn't seem to be the normal flurry of an officer-involved shooting, because normally they are doing absolutely everything they can to get that officer to the hospital. in this case, no one was transported, as it would appear to me. so at this point, what we know, there has been a shooting out here on fair oaks. police as well as santa clara police here are assisting. they have shut down the entire street for blocks on either end, as they continue their investigation and they continue to assess exactly what happened here today. sam? >> thank you very much, derek. again, a middle school nearby,

>> clark gregg joins us now. you wrote this film. you've done many films before. is this based on a sleazy agent kind of guy of child stars, is he sort of somebody you know? >> no, it wasn't a specific person. i wouldn't say it's representative of all agents for child actors. i've been around on jobs i was working on, there was something heartbreaking or loving about these people looking for a 10-year-old to take them to the big time. running to get the parents coffee. you see allison janney there, molly shannon. i've got a great ensemble cast around me, because i was kind of an ageing loser, everyone felt like -- >> i guess when you sat down, wrote this film, you didn't have yourself in mind as the ageing

loser, at what point did you jump on? >> it's kind of what the movie is about. we all struggle with that ageing inner loser. it's kind of about the people who aren't the ones who are overnight successes and kind of standing at the fences trying to get in. this guy finally stumbles on this brilliant young kid. and has a shot of getting everything he's always dreamed of but it looks like doing that might cost him his soul. >> he doesn't have a lot in common with you. but i understand you have a real piercing from the '80s. >> in the '80s, every time i think it's closed up, a job will come along where that particular loser should have an earring. and i push the thing through. it's worth it just for the look of my cover page. >> i had one in '92, early '90s.

>> you as say is buy your own, go to home depot? >> exactly. go look. find a vanity. your own top. you c change it out. set it in place. you get your plumber to set your pea trap. you can do this anywhere. there's a lot of different ways to go cheap. >> another way to go cheap, change out the hardware on your own? >> yeah, hardware's a great thing. kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, all of those things, that's a great way to amp up your room with just a couple of cheap fixes. so hardware, one of those things, you can get it at designer stores or home improvement stores. knock those out. if the holes are too small, use washers, that's easy. >> cabinets. >> sometimes, you don't have to tear them out, just refinish them them? >> right, cabinet, cabinet,

cabinets. old wood. sometimes the cheapest way, i am not a painter but it's just -- >> will it stay on and you won't get peeling or anything like that? >> it will. the work is in the prep. sand it, sand it, sand it. now, if it's real wood. make sure. otherwise, a composite, you can go right over it. change your hardware, you can make it modern, you can make it rustic. you can personalize it. >> i skipped ahead, change the hardware. that saves a lot of money. >> saves money. >> everybody talks about going green. but that can be expensive for people to do. what does it mean to go green? >> it can, l.e.d.s, undercounter mounts. retrofit. relatively easy, a light bulb that lasts seven years. that's a green thing. solar say green thing. one of my favorites is going green with bamboo. >> it's popular right now. >> hugely popular. it's a great hardwood.

this morning to the sound of a dozen gunshots on north fair oaks. you're seeing a live picture on your screen right there with s.w.a.t. activity. right now, we have derek shore on the phone with us, and the school lackdown has been lifted, but still an active scene out there. >> still a very active scene out here. i woke up this morning, kind of roused out of bed by what i believe to be about a dozen. i spoke to some other witnesses out here, they think maybe six to eight gunshots. the relieving news at this hour is that i went up and asked an officer. i said, are all of you guys okay? are all of the officers okay? they said, yeah, we're all fine. but it's pretty obvious that someone has been killed in this shooting. we had an ambulance and a fire truck that you can actually see on your screen right there. that fire truck. and they came, they have not transported anyone to the hospital. in fact, the ambulance left with an empty gurney. leading us to believe that someone has been killed in all of this. as you mentioned, a nearby

school was placed on temporary shelter, a lockdown, that has been lifted. but a number of officers out here from both the sunnyvale police department and the santa clara police department are out here investigating and continue to arrive on the scene as well as a huge command post that's been set up, shutting down fair oaks boulevard on either end. you can also see a mobile command center right there, and they have actually set up, in the middle of the intersection. so sam, that's the latest from here. >> outstanding, george. thank you for letting us know. these are the streets that have been affected and closed right now as a result of this violent activity. you can see them on your screen right there, southbound fair folks avenue, maude at fair oaks avenue, eb columbia at fair oaks avenue. we'll see you in 30 minutes.

and good morning. it's 10:26. i'm sam brock. we have an update to share with you now on breaking news, where several law enforcement agencies are on the scene of an officer involved shooting in sunnyvale. the violent activity prompted a temporary school lockdown and

street closures. "today in the bay's" bob redell is at north fair oaks near maude avenue where this all happened and you've learned some new information recently about the man involved. >> we just were briefed by a captain and he's telling us this happened around 9:45 this morning, all centered in that home right there at north fair oaks in maude. you can see where the sunnyvale s.w.a.t. vehicles in front. this is the home where a murder suspect was living. earlier this morning, at 9:45, officers with s.w.a.t. went in to try to arrest this man to serve a warrant. according to the captain, he tells us that they did a knock on the door and announced who they were, the man ignored their warning and displayed some sort of weapon. the office of public safety did not see whether that weapon was a knife, a gun, or something else, but when that man displayed that weapon, the officers, with the office of public safety, fired shots at him and killed him. he was taken to the hospital where he eventually was declared dead. according to at least one witness we've heard from, there

were five to six shots by their count that were fired at this man. again, a man who was wanted for a homicide. and this was a homicide that is, you know, an older case. it wasn't something that happened recently, but the captain wasn't able to specify when this murder took place. but this was the man that they were looking for, and as you mentioned, this neighborhood was on lockdown, even though they have a crime scene up here, the person that they were looking for is dead and there aren't any other outstanding suspects. we don't believe that this neighborhood is still on, quote, lockdown, and it was columbia middle school that performed its own lockdown. but we believe that has been lifted as well, because the threat is gone. again, a murder suspect, the office of public safety here in sunnyvale was trying to apprehend. they're trying to take in peacefully. they say that this man would not cooperate, and as a result, he was shot and killed by at least one of the officers. reporting live here in sunnyvale, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> and bob, one quick follow-up. it is stable now?

the investigation is going on, but everything is stable? >> that's correct. threat is gone. this is the only person they were looking for and they don't believe anyone else who was posing a threat or is a danger to the community. >> bob redell live from the scene, we appreciate that. let's bring in traffic reporter mike inouye with a look at all the closures as a result of today's incident. >> and as bob said, the active investigation is going on, but not a lockdown. still want to avoid the streets you saw with all the activity. fair oaks, wolf, columbia, and maude. that's a perimeter around there. that's the area to avoid as far as technically, look at the map. a chopper overhead, see all the activity in the area and blocked off a few blocks there. look at the map, this is what we're talking about, tupper left-hand portion of sunnyvale on our screen, but the only issue as far as freeway traffic goes is 87, there's a truck on the shoulder with a number of chp vehicles there. the rest of the bay looking a little bit lighter, as we've seen for the last few days. again, avoid that area in sunnyvale by the investigation. >> thank you, mike. a lot of details to bring you later in the day obviously on this killing of a gentleman who
