the suspect is aaron ybarra. not a current or former student at spu. police have revealed that he was armed to the hit. he had a shotgun, a knife, and additional rounds of ammo. one mom and daughter had just walked through the foyer and missed the shooting by minutes. >> we had just cleared that area. we could have very well, five minutes early, been at that very location. that's extremely disturbing. >> this is a very staple university. last night, 1,000 people crowded into the methodist church on spu campus where they prayed for the injured and the family of the 19-year-old man who was killed. they leaned on their faith for comfort. >> if there was a time that we needed to express the grace and love and peace of christ for

those around us, it's during this time. >> now, many this morning are citing the bravery of that student guard who pepper sprayed ybarra. many held him down until the police arrived. the university president choked up when talking about his students' bravery and selflessness with regard to the shooting. it's 5:02 and today we look back and remember the men who lost their lives on the beaches of normandy during world war ii. president obama is in normandy this morning to take part in the somber ceremony. a few hours ago he spoke at the american cemetery where close to 10,000 american soldiers are buried. on june 6th, 1944, allied forces stormed the french beach. the attack marked the turning point in world war ii. fremont police hope a

picture snapped from a surveillance camera will help them find a man who broke into a home. you'll see the man just before he got into the house. apparently he used a board to knock the camera off position but the camera still got a close-up snapshot of him before he did it. after the cameras stopped rolling, he kicked the door in and went into the house. the alarm went off and he left shortly there ever. two young birds were hurt when a contractor for the post office cut down branches on the trees where the birds lived. the birds have been taken care of by the international bird rescue but now two of them are well enough to be released. the three other birds are too young to be let go. the contractor is facing federal charges because the heron are protected species. he said he didn't know they were

there and is paying for their care. you can get out the kiddy pool because it's going to be hot out there, right? >> yes. it's really comfortable weather but it's one of those weekends you want to get to as close to the water as possible. it's going to be a triple-digit weekend for the bay area. 49 in santa rosa, 55 in oakland and to the north of cloverdale region, it's going to be hotter to the south and immediate north. i want to point out that we're going to cut off the natural coolant on sunday so it's going to be hot in the city by the bay. as ywe get into the afternoon, the temperatures are going to be in the 70s. 80s move in by lunchtime and 90s

and highway 92 interchange. christie smith just arrived. >> reporter: two people made it out, a husband and a wife, and they were able to tell firefighters that an aunt, an elderly aunt was still inside the home. firefighters say first, though, they had to try and put this fire out. you can see how badly damaged this small home is and they say that smoke and flames were pouring out of both of the front windows and also the front door. so right now what they are doing is everything is out but they are waiting to go inside. they sprayed a lot of foam in there. they want that to die down before they can take a look inside. they are looking at a couple of possible of causes, including possibly an electrical fire. it started at about 1:00 this morning. hayward firefighters arrived very quickly. they put it out quickly. the couple made it out but, again, told the crew that the wife's aunt was still inside. they tried to rescue her.

unfortunately, they were not able to. at this point, what they were telling us is it may have started in a bedroom. everyone was asleep at the time. the husband was transported because he had chest pains. the wife was unharmed. red cross was out here briefly to help them but we're told they will more than likely stay with family members. as soon as the foam dies down, they will get a better look. but they are possibly looking at this being an electrical fire. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay". one of the largest cell phone companies has exposed government snooping overseas. authorities with vodaphone outlines how some countries can directly access an operator's network. they have permanent access to

there, laura and sam. california chrome never raced here in the bay area at golden gate fields but those behind this racing sensation has spent a lot of time at this track along the albany shoreline. this is california chrome's trainer. this was eight meetings between 2001 and 2007 and then moved to so cal in 2008 but his son steve operates it. the man who will ride at belmont stakes, we're talking about jockey victor espinoza. he began operating back in '93. in '94 he was the lead apprentice rider here at golden gate fields. experience paid off. not only has he put california chrome in, the previously rode a horse to victory in the kentucky derby but fell short of the triple crown at belmont.

tomorrow will be the biggest belmont stakes party in the bay area but i doubt the party here will be anything compared to where my colleague jay gray is in new york. i'm assuming that california chrome is still the favorite to win tomorrow's race? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, bob. still a heavy favorite here. california chrome out this morning for an early run. really just a jog around the track. three laps. looked real good, looked real healthy. that's good news. looked quiet around the oval as you would expect. but make no expect. on the eve of what could be horse-making history, there is a buzz here at belmont. >> california chrome shines bright in the kentucky derby! >> reporter: it has been a whirlwind drive. >> everywhere i go, he's on the front pain of the papers, on television shows all over the

has on his side? do you remember? >> his rhythm. >> it's going to be a good one to watch right here in the nbc bay area. i love horse racing. >> you've been following this for a while. >> because it was born if the central valley, which is where i was, too. >> great things come from the central valley. all of our agricultural products, for example. i can tell you right now, we don't have any rain in the forecast but we're going to see a little drizzle at least for the first part of the weekend. we're not talking about elevated fire potential until next week. they just don't get the onshore flow in the central valley and it's dry as a result. this is what we can expect throughout the south bay. by 9:00 a.m., we're at 68 degrees. as we progress throughout the day, noon. 80 degrees. by 3:00, p.m., that's one of the

hottest points of the day. it's going to be a warm day. even when the sun drops off at 9:00 p.m., we're still in the upper 70s. today's highs, a repeat performance, a lateral move between today and yesterday but then we're going to increase that heat substantially as we head through saturday and especially on sunday. we give you a little preview of what is to come. high pressure builds in, winds offshore. very hot air settles into the bay area. 90s and 100. 70s and 80s along the coast. that's where the traffic will be on sunday. you can bet your bottom dollar on that. right, mike? if you have that bottom dollar, you probably have to pay for parking. there you go. getting it out of you any way we can. no real drama. you have your slower orange here at the altamont pass. as we look over the san mateo

bridge, there was a deadly house fire there. we talked about that. it's on a surface street. it doesn't affect the freeways. it's moving smoothly. but that's the area where christie smith will continue to talk about the deadly house fire. san mateo bridge, it's a smooth drive. we'll show you how things shape up westbound across the flat section. we're particular picking up the volume just a bit. over towards hayward, easy flow as well. traffic flowing on the peninsula, in mountain view, shoreline, the scripps fans will be there. it will be near the off ramps and watching construction near 880 at the steven street boulevard off ramp. we'll look at the north bay, 101 picks up for the volume but no real drama here. no surprises coming out of novato and across the golden

gate bridge. back to you. a service dog which was stolen from a san leandro parking lot was reunited with his owner yesterday. the dog couldn't stop barking. look at the love. the owner said he bought the little dog from a couple at a walmart parking lot. >> i was watching television and i saw the guy on television and i thought, this guy needs to have his dog back. >> i'm not going to let her out of my sight. i'm going to get her microchipped. she's my everything. >> he is her everything, too. he was left paralyzed six years ago by an armed robbery. occasionally things restore your faith in humanity.

i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. there was a house fire and christie smith is live there. crews are waiting to enter that home? >> yeah. good morning. that's what they told us. they are waiting to enter this home. a real challenge for firefighters when they first arrived and, of course, a couple arrived outside of their home saying that their elderly aunt was trapped inside and crews had to knock down the flames that they say were pouring out of the front door on townsend avenue. a woman was carried out in a wheelchair but she did not survive. she would have had to go right through the flames in the wheelchair. they believe this started at 1:00 this morning in a bedroom in the home and they say that they are looking at a number of

extension cords plugged into one outlet as a possible cause and it may have been electrical. the husband had chest pains. he was taken to the hospital. the wife, though, was unharmed and it was actually her aunt that passed away. they also tell us that a number of pets died in the home and again crews tell us that they sprayed so much foam inside to put the fire out that they are waiting for that to die down so they can take another look. the red cross is helping the husband and wife but we're told it's very likely that they will probably just go ahead and stay with family members. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." the monthly jobs numbers were just released. 217,000 jobs added in the month of may. those numbers will keep the unemployment rate the same, at 6.3%. >> fourth month of solid gain

now. one man opened fire on the universi university in seattle. >> police are being looking for answers. >> a very tragic story. peggy? >> awful to hear these stories. yesterday i was reporting on a shooting and today another shooting at seattle pacific university, just a little over 4,000 students attend there. they are grieving for the one student that was killed and praying for the three others that were injured. now, this all began yesterday about 3:00 in the afternoon when a 26-year-old man, who is not a student at that school, walked into the math and engineering building and started shooting. he was well armed. one mom and daughter had just walked through that hallway and missed the shooting by just minutes. >> we had just reached that area. we could have very well, five

students. >> that's right. he came loaded. a tough situation. he did the right thing. >> thanks, peggy. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> thank you, guys. temperatures are going to be comfortable in the inland valleys but then it's going to heat up. i want to show you what the bay area looks like from this area. you can see that we have low clouds situated in the san francisco bay but nothing to report throughout the tri-valley and even here in san jose that natural ac is being cut off this morning. as a result, temperatures are going to be warm. if you didn't have to use your ac yesterday, you may get by with one more day not having to use it. but likely having to turn it on at some point. especially on sunday as the triple digits return to the bay area. temperatures this morning mostly in the 50s. we're headed towards the 80s and 90s and the place to go, if you want to beat that heat, san francisco, 71 degrees.

we'll take you to your weekend forecast in a few moments. right now, though, let's see how that drive is doing. here's mike. >> good morning. it's friday so a lighter volume and a later build is what we're going to see. my guess is that midday it's going to have a heavier volume around the bay and folks are shuffling around. right now we have the cash lanes backing up on the approach to the toll plaza. so there you go, no problems down on the east shore freeway. let's look at the map and highway 24 and 880 coming out of the maze. they are moving nicely. eastbound 24 heading over towards the walnut creek interchanges, stay to the left because they are on the right. san ramon and in the tri-valley, it's slower, a gentle build as

he's from the central valley. his trainer and jockey have a lot of experience here. trainer art sherman spent some years here. not too long ago, between 2001 and 2007, he was the second leading trainer and then moved to southern california in '08 but his son, steve, continues to operate a racing stable here, according to track officials. and the man who is riding california chrome tomorrow, his jockey is victor espinoza. he is originally from mexico city and immigrated here and raced here in '93 and was a lead apprentice rider and it's persons that paid off and gets the second chance tomorrow at

landings during world war ii. tens of thousands of allied troops swarmed the beaches of normandy, france, cracking hitler's western front. it marked a turning point in the war. the fight now came with a cost. tens of thousands of allied troops lost their lives. world leaders gathered in normandy to honor those who paid the ultimate price. tracie potts has the details. it's hard to believe 70 years now, tracie. >> some of them were just only 16 years old when they hit the beaches and now they are in their 80s. let's start with president obama who toured the cemetery today. some 4700 americans died that day. he spoke to a crowd of over 14,000 at omaha beach remembering some of the details of that invasion that led to the end of world war ii. it was at omaha beach that really turned the tide for what

happened in world war ii. back then, the u.s. and russia were on the same side against nazi germany. today, not necessarily so, especially when it comes to ukraine. we've seen vladimir putin and president obama sitting together at lunch but no one-on-one interaction. not sure that's going to happen. >> we'll be watching for that. thank you so much, tracie. listen to this. 70 years after his last jump over normandy, a 93-year-old man jumped again. yesterday, jim martin joined parachuters from another court to reenact that jump on the beach in france. the world war ii veteran said this time it's much nicer. what courage. 93 years old. he gave it his all, sam. >> that's wonderful. he's a dwindling number of

veterans. it was 6 million and now to 1 million world war ii vets. the san leandro news police department will be holding a press conference about the latest trend, wilding. that means teenagers are going around the streets terrorizing everything in their path. in the last three days this has happen happened. u.s. army captain mike viti will be stopping in san francisco. viti is walking more than 4400 miles across the u.s. to raise awareness about the sacrifices the troops and their families have made. today he'll be stopping in san francisco to talk with the 49ers and head coach jim harbaugh.

north across the span. they move the center divide. the cones there. it's not a problem as far as visibility on the deck but we can't see the marine side from the san francisco side. the bay bridge, we'll see what we can see there. all of the cash lanes are back up. the fast track lanes are starting to slow a little bit. i'm not getting any update on metering lights just yet. they typically come on later on friday. the approach on our map shows no problem coming through the area. the giants play the mets tonight at 7:15 and that begins a ten-game home streak at the at&t park. so there will be traffic there after work. as you head towards the walnut creek interchanges, through livermore for 580 and northbound from san jose starts to build the volume just a little bit until we see the slowing and then palo alto, a quick look shows you the drive and haze is

not a problem for visibility all the way into san francisco. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 5:48. ryan chamberlain, who was a suspect of a manhunt in san francisco and is now charged with having bomb-making materials will be back in court for a detention hearing. fbi agents returned to his home to look for more evidence. haz-mat crews removed items from the home. a bomb squad was there just in case. his arrest caused a three-day manhunt. a woman lured a girl into a bathroom and hit her repeatedly in her privates with a hammer. she also reportedly punched the girl all over her body. this was caused by a mother of another student and she faces several sexual assault charges.

caltrain has another month to figure out whether to raise parking prices from $20 to $25. this would be for big events like the 49ers. this is to discourage people from filling the mountain view lot to avoid even higher parking fees. some customers say if the proposal passes, they may skip the train and take a taxi instead. >> it can be around $30 in traffic. so i just would have to weigh my options and see what would be best. >> caltrain is considering the same special event increase near the san mateo event center in hillsdale stations. they will vote on it next month. san francisco will mark the 40th anniversary of "beach blanket babylon," a show that was launched in 1974 that started from a costume troop of
