6:01 am
i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. >> a fire started around 1:00 this morning near townsend avenue and today in the bay's christie smith is live in hayward. i understand that you just spoke with a neighbor? >> reporter: yes, the elderly woman who died has lived here for decades but in the last ten years she used a wheelchair to get around the home and they hadn't seen her much. the neighbor was really, really worried when she saw that this was the house on fire overnight. she came outside and saw that the street here, townsend avenue, was completely blocked by fire trucks. firefighters tell us when they arrived at 1:00 this morning, smokes and flames poured from the front doors and windows so they had to knock that down first. a couple that lived with the woman said that the wife's aunt
6:02 am
was trapped inside. they had all been sleeping when the fire broke out. firefighters carried the woman out who was in her wheelchair but it was too late. she did not survive. one neighbor watched the towering flames and feared this outcome. >> i walked down here and looked at the officer and asked if everyone got out and he said, no unfortunately, not. >> reporter: now, the husband suffered chest pains and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. the wife was unharmed. a few of the family pets, a birds and a cat also died. the family also has chickens in the yard. what they are telling us is that they did have a chance to look around inside. they haven't confirmed what the cause is but they are leaning towards electrical. they say that a number of cords, too many, perhaps, were plugged
6:03 am
into one outlet. so that was their focus this morning. the red cross was out here helping the couple but we're told that they likely will be staying with family members. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you, christie. honor and sacrifice. this morning we pay tribute to soldiers who lost their lives on d-day. the men who stormed the beaches of normandy 70 years ago paved the way for the liberation of europe. a live look right now at the stretch of the shore which was code named sword beach during world war ii. president obama is there along with the leaders of france, great britain, and russia. this include as fly-over and a 21-gun salute. >> president obama attended a ceremony in the american cemetery of normandy.

6:05 am
550 people die each day according to the world museum. we have more information at nbcbayarea.com. we'll bring you live coverage throughout the newscast. we're learning more details about the suspect investigators say opened fire at a seattle university yesterday killing one student and injuring several others. peggy bunker is joining us with more on the story. students jumped in to stop that gunman? >> they did, laura. it could have been a lot worse. seattle pacific university is a small, private christian university with a little over 4,000 students that attend there. they are grieving for the student who was killed and praying for the three others that were injured. a gunman around 3:20 yesterday afternoon, identified as aaron ybarra, walked into the math and engineering building and started
6:06 am
shooting. he was well-armed and one professor heard the shot from his classroom. >> i heard a shot. i was outside my window and saw a man laying on the ground and there was a gun over him. >> the professor witnessed what happened next, one of his own engineering students pepper spraying yc spraying ybarra getting him to the ground and then sitting on him. >> i called 911 and there was another shot inside the building and looked down from my office and saw one of my students sitting on top of somebody in a big pile of shell casings. >> pretty remarkable there. students spent the day comforting each other after the shooting thinking of the selfless acts by those that they are calling heroes. police say their actions probably prevented more deaths.
6:07 am
they stopped ybarra as he was pausing to reload his rifle. as you can see, it could have been a lot worse. two are still being treated at the hospital. one is in critical condition, the other listed in stable. back to you. >> thanks so much, peggy. san jose police still looking for a suspects in the city's 18th homicide of the year. this is an update to what we brought you yesterday. investigators found a body at piercy road. they say the victim was stabbed. splits have not released the motive or the identity. fremont police hope a picture snapped from a surveillance video will help them find out who broke into this home. he used a board to knock the camera off of position. the camera still got a close snapshot of the guy. officers say after the camera stopped rolling, he kicked in the door and went into the home with the alarm going off. he apparently got a little
6:08 am
scared because he took off shortly after answentering that home. 6:07 right now on your friday morning, we're going to take a live picture of the golden gate bridge with its signature fog covering most of the beautiful aesthetics of that bridge. and it's christina loren. >> i was talking about christina loren and the bridge. >> i hope so, sam. i hope so. temperatures right now are mostly in the 50s to start. it's cloudy at the coast. meanwhile, we are nice and clear inland. and yeah, if you didn't catch that, sam brock, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the morning team. we share our eyes. happy to have him here with us. now, let me tell you what is happening across the bay area now via your microclimate forecast. we have low clouds out there but really not impacting your inland valleys to start the day. we start with the natural coolants and temperatures soar

6:10 am
but it's a potential for a crash. a lot of cardboard box is reported in your lanes right around hillsdale. you may have to have a traffic break if they have to clear those. otherwise, cars will hit them and then clear themselves. be careful. a smoother drive. northbound 101 show as build north of 680. we have a live camera there. northbound is looking very smooth. a light volume of traffic where you saw it already. a blip of yellow. lighter volume here. we'll show the second one there at 6:30 for the build. dublin pass getting out of town may be more popular heading towards the central valley as we often see on the weekends so it's starting to slow down through the atlamont pass. >> knock on formica. >> we'll take your word for it.

6:19 am
the month of june. i'm always looking 15 to 20 days out. i want to know what is coming our way. this is not the most impressive heatwave we've had this year. definitely not going to reach beyond 105 degrees but as we head throughout sunday, that's the peak of it. you're going to get great beach days throughout saturday and sunday in santa cruz. it's on the warm side. saturday, 82 degrees. you're going to head to the giant home stretch. we'll take you to the forecast. if you're heading outdoors, let's go to mike. what you can get to on our website, nbcbayarea.com/skycam, check it out on our website. a smooth drive southbound. a little build here. this is friday. a later build around the bay. no problems into novato. over towards the golden gate bridge area, there's a smooth flow as well and towards the bay bridge toll plaza and no delays

6:21 am
sounded like a sonic boom. fire engulfed the pickup. inside the air bags went off and the two scrambled for their life as smoke began to fill the cab. a nearby police officer helped get the couple out safely. >> i think you kind of hope that you pass out and don't have to actually experience what that must be like to see lightning going into your car. >> it's amazing to see the video afterwards. >> it's better after the fact. not so much during. it's 6:21 in the bay. still ahead, satisfy your craving before the door is closed. what are we talking about? which sweet spot is about to hand out their last donuts.

6:34 am
temperatures will be much warmer inland than what we are expecting at the coast. the reason it's so much hotter inland is because we're cutting off the natural ac, the marine influence. so as the heat escalates this weekend, this is what expect. up to 92 degrees on sunday. something that is happening in the city this weekend, it's one of the largest street fairs in san francisco. it's absolutely free. it's the union street festival. two concerts are going to have two stages. live music out there and a fashion show. lots of fun but bring that sunscreen. check the drive with mike. >> we'll look out here after i check my sunscreen. we're being looki looking towars 101. look at the map. that's a lot of traffic. the map shows you the only spot with any real slowing, we see that over the week anyway. northbound 101 at lawrence
