good morning. i'm richard lui. police in las vegas are searching for answers this morning. why were two of their own gunned down while eating lunch at a pizzeria on sunday. the male and female suspects killed a third person at a nearby walmart before taking their own lives. nbc's jay gray has the latest on the investigation for us. >> i don't know what set him off. but he just was on a rampage. >> reporter: the first shots rang out just before noon in this las vegas pizza restaurant where investigators say a man and woman ambushed vegas police officers alyn beck and igor soldo. one suspect apparently yelling this is the start of a revolution as they opened fire. >> my officers were simply having lunch when the shooting started. >> reporter: one of the officers managed to return fire. but both ultimately died from their wounds. the suspects took the officers' weapons and ammunition and walked across a parking lot to this walmart where they shot and killed an innocent bystander just inside the front doors.

>> very scary. because he was right behind where i work and i was afraid that he would look over the wall and start shooting there. >> reporter: instead, they moved inside as police moved in. witnesses say there was a grief gun battle and according to police, the suspects turned their guns on themselves, part of an apparent suicide pact. a statement from walmart called the incident, quote, a senseless act of violence. >> it is a tragic day. it is a very, very difficult day. but we still have a community of police and we have a community to protect. >> reporter: as they work through the pain, of trying to figure out how and why they lost an innocent civilian and two of their own. jay gray, nbc news, las vegas. now to a small but encouraging sign from actor and comedian tracy morgan. he remains in critical condition following a deadly auto accident

over the weekend. his publicist confirms he's more responsive at the moment, morgan underwent surgery for a broken leg yesterday. he also suffered a broken nose and several broken ribs. the former "saturday night live" and "30 rock" star was one of five men traveling in a limo along the new jersey turnpike when a chain reaction accident occurred killing one of morgan's close friends. morgan is expected to remain nopt for several weeks. kevin rope, the truck drive e charged with causing the accident, is expected to appear in a courtroom today. es charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. police say sandra bullock was home had a man broke into her house around 6:00 a.m. on sunday. he was arrested on the property and is now sitting behind bars in lieu of $50,000 bail. bullock was not armed. according to two law enforcement sources, he kept a diary about

the actress and was caught with some of her personal items when he was arrested. today, obama administration is expected to brief house members on the latest with the bowe bergdahl prisoner exchange. the army sergeant is still being treated at a hospital in landstuhl, germany. officials say he he's in good physical condition but not ready to return home. danielle leigh joins us live from washington. good morning to you. what is the latest on the prisoner exchange controversy we're hearing? >> reporter: no sign of the outrage from lawmakers diminishing. they're eager for answers about the deal and the circumstances surrounding sergeant bergdahl's initial capture and hoping to get some answers this week. senior white house officials are heading to capitol hill to defend the trade of sergeant bowe bergdahl for five taliban leaders. they'll be briefing the house where republicans and democrats alike are angry they weren't notified ahead of time. and worried the administration gave up too much. >> one taliban has apparently said he would return to the

battlefield. so it's a mixed bag at best. >> this was the wrong message at the wrong time and we're going to pay for this decision for years. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry is dismissing concerns about the released taliban returning to the fight and u.s. troops in afghanistan being placed at increased risk. >> i'm not telling you they don't have some ability at some point to go back and get involved. but they also have the ability to get killed doing that. >> reporter: at a u.s. military hospital in germany, sergeant bergdahl is telling his medical team, he tried to escape at least once and after being recaptured was confined to a small space like a box. u.s. officials say bergdahl is fine physically, but struggling psychologically and has chosen not to call his parents. the fbi is investigating death threats to bergdahl's family amidst allegations he may be a deserter for walking off his base. on wednesday, the defense secretary chuck hagel will testify before a house committee about bergdahl. richard? >> danielle leigh in washington,

d.c., thank you so much. it was a traditional yet unconventional two-hour prayer session hosted by pope francis at the vatican. the pope brought together israeli president shimon peres and palestinian president mahmoud abbas, the first time the two leaders have met in public in more than a year. pope francis urging both men to respond to calls for peace and there may be signs that tensions could be found between them both with both agreeing that peace and stability was needed in the region. the meeting comes despite the recent collapse of u.s. backed middle east peace talks between the two sides. a fourth degree black belt battling her way to the crown at this year's miss usa pageant. >> and miss usa 2014 is miss nevada. >> miss nevada. nia sanchez winning the coveted title of miss usa. she said in the interview
