en talking on her cell phone when she drove through a red light and crashed into another car, but the mayor says she'll turn over her phone records to prove she was not on the phone. stephanie trang is live with the investigation and what witnesses are saying this morning. good morning stephanie. >> reporter: yeah good morning, kris. oakland police are trying to determine who was at fault in this collision, but it is worth noting mayor quan is running for re-election. so what appeared to be a minor collision could be a major political problem for her. take a look at the cell phone video of the crash that happened at 5:30 last night in west oakland. mayor quan in green is checking on the people in the other car. a woman and a 14-year-old boy. now the police say the mayor was driving alone in her suv on market when her car collided with a nissan on 26th street. police did not cite the mayor. at issue here is who had the right of way. the accident comes days after photos surfaced of mayor quan talking on her cell phone while driving. witnesses we spoke with from
5:01 am
yesterday's crash say the mayor appeared at fault. >> i don't know if she was distracted or not, but she blatantly hit the car. she ran through the light and the car hit her. i mean it was just -- she ran the red light. >> reporter: now mayor quan put out a statement on social media last night saying i immediately pulled over and checked to make sure no one was hurt. it appeared everyone was all right. and there well-being was my first priority. police are investigating what led to the collision and i'm going to let them sort out the details. the mayor was, quote, absolutely not on her phone and will prove it with cell phone records. we also spoke to the driver of yesterday's collision. he back was hurting and she was taking her nephew with her as a precaution. stephanie chuang "today in the bay." well, this morning police officers in las vegas desperately are searching for answers following the senseless

suspects. both are now dead as police struggled to explain the chaos. >> it's a tragic day. it's a very very difficult day. but we still have a community of police and we still have a community to protect. >> reporter: the sheriff reiterated his officers were just simply having lunch when they were killed. this morning five people are dead including the two suspects. reports say the suspects warned everyone inside the walmart to get out before the apparent murder-suicide. both of the officers leave families behind. i'm damian trujillo "today in the bay." deputies are still trying to figure out how two teenagers reportedly used a stolen credit card to rent a sports car and a multimillion vacation home. two 19-year-olds were pulled over in this orange mcclaren sports car over the weekend in roseland. they used a stolen credit card to rent the car for $13,000.
5:04 am

5:05 am
the stock, june 2nd was a shareholder record. so let's say you had 15 shares valued at roughly $10,000. well, your investment is still at roughly $10,000 but you now have 105 shares of apple stock. generally companies do this when their price gets too high to build excitement among small investors who may not be able to afford it. it is possible the company wants to be included among the 30 stocks that make up the dow jones industrial average the. this move would clear the way for that since the dow's 30 selection committee has only completed stocks with a share price below $300 a share. and right now as i said they would start trading near $92. apple has done 2:1 stock splits three times before. the stock rose 2% in the first year after the split in '87 and plunged 57% in the 12 month and
5:06 am
rocketed 60% of the split in 2005 chchlt means, again, i have no idea what the stock is going to do today. >> well, at least we know it will go down significantly today. bob redell in coupeupertinocupertino. if you see tim, let him know. this is a photo from apple's mac production line in austin. the problem is and it is hard to see, but right behind cook is an imac that is running windows. apparently cook does not notice this. some half million twitter followers apparently did. the photo is now going viral. >> what do you do? all of the pictures behind meteorologist christina loren are okay for broadcast. no trouble here. i'm not going to pretend to ignore them either. good morning to you. we have a good looking day in the upper 50s to mid-60s. 65 degrees in mountain view for example. it is a mild start out there.

this is "today in the bay." good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. a live look at san francisco where temperatures are in the high 70s today. we'll check that microclimate forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. good morning, kris scott, everybody at home. i want to show you the weather story of the day. that's the fact we are waking up with low cloud cover. we take you to the highest point we can. this is our san bruno camera overlooking the bay. and this is all the fog that we have to show you this morning. and that is not enough to keep the bay area cool my friends. so it will be hot out there with the exclusion of the immediate coast. you're going to hit the upper 70s. meanwhile, in the tri-valley, 101 degrees for you today. 88 degrees for the peninsula. 90 degrees in the south bay. there are some ways that you can beat the heat. close all the blinds before leaving the house this morning. also postpone using the heat

5:32 am
west oakland. stephanie chuang in live in oakland where the mayor says this is not a case of distracted driving and she says she can prove it. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. we are here at oakland police headquarters where traffic investigators are determining who had the right of way, but the spokesperson said through cell phone records they can prove that the mayor was not on her cell phone at the time of the crash. we have cell phone video of the crash that happened last night at 5:30 in west oakland. mayor quan is in green checking on the people in the other car, a woman and a 14-year-old boy. police did not cite the mayor when she collided with the other vehicle on 26th street. this comes days after pictures surfaced of mayor quan talking on her cell phone while driving. after last night's crash, one witness says she didn't see if the mayor was on her phone but added it didn't look like she was paying attention.
5:33 am
>> she was completely distracted, she was looking down, she was not looking at the road. so i don't think she noticed that the light had turned red. >> reporter: the mayor took to social media last night to dispute that in part writing, i'm also submitting my phone records to the investigators which will confirm i was not on my phone at the time of the crash. i'm grateful no one has been reported injured. please stay safe out there and look out for one another. the other driver in the crash said her back was hurting and she was going to the hospital along with her nephew as a precaution. the mayor said she was driving between two community events in west oakland when the other car hit her. again, that remains to be seen. and while this appears to be a fairly minor collision. it is worth noting the mayor is seeking re-election this fall and it could turn into a fairly substantial political problem. live in oakland, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> it does sound like from witnesses that the mayor may have run the red light.
5:34 am
>> reporter: i'm sorry, scott, say that one more time. >> the mayor was probably running a red light, at least according to witnesses, even if you count out the cell phone part. it sounds like the mayor was running the light. >> reporter: right. the question is whether the mayor ran the red light here. and the witnesses we spoke to, a few of them said it looked like she was at fault yesterday. >> okay. stephanie chuang thank you very much. new this morning in oakland, police became part of a crime scene after the officer at the wheel hit a woman crossing the roadway. it happened around 10:30 last night near the intersection of 84th avenue and international boulevard east of 880. witnesses say the woman was crossing international boulevard when she was hit. the officer's lights and supers were off but so far no confirmation from the department. >> i've seen the lady dark-haired lady with a green lime dress, she was coming across the street. he right there, that first car right there, came across, no

sirens, no nothing. sweeping by and he just hit her and stopped. >> now that woman was taken to the hospital complaining about pain in her arm. the officer was not hurt. it is unclear whether the officer was headed for a call when the crash had. a review of construction records and e-mails from the company that built the bay bridge found we will probably spend millions of dollars on repairs. according to the report by the sacramento bee the department of transportation picked a chinese company to build the bridge despite the fact that the company had no experience building a bridge. the paper says officials apparently thought the company would work faster and they cost about $250 million less than the next lowest bidder. but the report also found in order to get all this done quickly, some of the work doesn't meet code and probably will have to be fixed down the road. the department is defending its decision. the price of apple's stock will drop significantly today, but no one is panicking. bob redell is live outside apple
5:36 am
headquarters in cupertino. bob, today shares will be only worth 1/7 of the price but that's not a bad thing. >> reporter: that's correct. good morning to you, kris. that's because of the 7:1 stock split that the tech giant enacted yesterday. if you are a shareholder, that means you get an additional six shares of stock for every stock that you own. but the price is going to be a fraction of what it was at. so on friday the stock rose to $645. you do the math today it will start trading near $92.25. again, if you had 15 shares of stock valued at roughly $10,000, your investment is still valued the same amount but now you have 105 shares of apple stock. generally companies do this to try to make their stock a more affordable stock for small investors. when the stock is at $645 that's not an entry point for some people. but when it is below $100 it is
5:37 am
easier to get in and will help to build excitement. that's not clear if that's apple's intent. but it is also possible that apple is trying to get entered into the dow jones 30 industrial average. the selection committee for those 30 stocks typically do not choose stocks valued over $300. this, of course, would put them into that range. again, not clear what the intent was. apple has done a three stock split before. and in prior times, they were 2:1. in two of the instances, the stock didn't do much. one time it plunged and the other time it skyrocketed. my advice today is buy, buy, buy! i mean sell sell sell! i have no idea what i'm talking about, don't listen to me. >> bob, this puts you in the league of just about everyone else. >> reporter: pretty much yeah. there's your crystal ball. >> thank you bob. we'll check in with christina loren to authoritatively say it is going to be hot, hot, hot. >> glorified.

59 degrees in san francisco. 63 in san francisco, i'm sorry, san jose. i love bob redell. it will be a nice day for the silicon valley but it will be hot out there. temperatures are going to be very warm. about 20 degrees above average. and you can see the reason why. no june gloom over the san francisco bay this morning. we are entirely clear all the way from 92 south through morgan hill. temperatures are really really nice out there to start the day. but it will be hot getting into this afternoon. in fact, we'll be in the 70s. the mid-70s in the south bay. by lunchtime temperatures here are going to reach the 90s. so do everything you can to combat the heat. i advise people to shut the blinds. don't let the sun come blazing into your home. that's one thing you can do to help. and open up the windows if you don't have an a/c after 6:00 once the sun starts to set and we get the nice ocean breeze throughout tonight. this is the last hot day. 90 degrees today in the south bay. cool breeze for the peninsula. by this evening, 88 degrees for

this morning an entire community is coming to grips with the violent killing of three people including two police officers in vegas. the question is why. damian true hejillo is joining with us this story. >> reporter: this morning police in las vegas are trying to piece together the hours and minutes before the shooting. it all began inside a las vegas pizza place. two police officers were having lunch when the couple walked up and shot the officers at point-blank range. that set off a rampage that led to a walmart store across the street where the couple allegedly shot an innocent bystander before pulling a gun on themselves. police officers across the nation are now mourning the loss

of two las vegas police officers. this morning jay gray is live in las vegas. jay, in watching my twitter feed this morning, the entire nation is mourning. what is the mood there in las vegas? >> reporter: yeah i think just still a lot of people stunned, damian. you can understand this is really just unfolding through the noon hour yesterday and into the evening. now the investigation is continuing into the early morning here. still no clear indication of the motivation in this incident. as you talked about, there are neighbors in the apartment complex where the couple may have lived that talked about this couple talking openly about white supremacy. also about actively searching at some point killing police officers. it's disturbing to hear that from the apartment complex four miles from here where investigators are pouring through an apartment there. they continue to work at the

walmart behind me as well. still a heavy police presence here and across the area right now. it's going to be that way for quite some time. we don't have the names of the suspects or the third victim in this case. the person that was shot just as those two suspects walked into the walmart and opened fire. there was a brief gun battle between police that had moved into the walmart and the two suspects in this case. and after that is when officers said they turned the guns on themselves. so a lot of questions left to answer damian. we expect to learn a lot more throughout the day. there is a press conference from police scheduled a bit later this morning. do we know if the walmart behind you will be opening later today or is it still a crime scene at this point? >> reporter: it's still a crime scene at this point. i would be shocked if it open today. walmart did issue a statement calling the incident a senseless act of violence. and they obviously said they are
5:46 am
