6:02 am
the suspects then took the officers guns and ammunition and then ran across the street to a local walmart. police say they shot an innocent bystander just inside the front door before warning everyone else to leave the store. arriving officers say they heard more gunshots after that in an apparent suicide between the suspects. witnesses are telling us what they saw during the rampage. >> because he was right behind where i work, and i was atrade that he would look over the wall and start shooting there. >> this morning we are getting reports out of las vegas that the couple may have been members of a white supremacist group while investigators piece together the moments before the rampage. officers now repair to bury two of their own. to recap, five people dead this morning, including the suspects. they have not been identified.

6:05 am
police say the mayor was driving alone in her suv on market when her car collided with a nissan on 26th street. this happened at 5:30 in west oakland. they didn't cite the mayor. this comes days after photos surfaced of her talking on her cell phone while driving. the issue is who had the right of way in yesterday's crash? witnesses say they believe it was the mayor who was at fault. >> i don't know if she had been distracted or not, but she blatantly hit the car. she ran through the light and the car hit her. i mean, it was just -- she ran a red light. >> now mayor quan responded through social media last night saying in part, i immediately pulled over and checked to make sure no one was hurt. i appears everyone was all right and their well-being was my first priority. the mayor will submit her phone records to investigators to prove she was not on her cell

roughly $645. when the market just opened moments ago, it was at $92 and change because of the 7:1 stock split that went into effect yesterday. so for anyone who held stock on june 2nd, if you were a shareholder on that day, you received an additional six shares for every one share you own. so let's say you have 15 shares valued at roughly $10,000. your investment is still at roughly $10,000 but you now have 105 shares of apple stock. generally companies like apple do this when their stock price gets too high to build excitement in their stock among small investors who cannot afford it. we don't know if that was apple's intent here. it's possible the company wants to be included among the 30 stocks to make up the dow jones industrial average. this move would clear the way since the dow's 30 selection committee has only selected stocks with a share price below $300 a share. and clearly that puts apple into the range. now, apple has done 2 for 1 stock splits before.

heat. it's the kind of heat to put you in a bad mood by the end of the day. you may be in a bad mood getting off work and you just want to get home. and the heat does not help, but you can do yourself a solid favor by looking for shade when looking for the parking spot. it may be worth your while to take five to ten extra minutes for the perfect spot. that will keep you temperatures 10 to 20 degrees cooler this afternoon. that, my friends, is a luxury of parking in the shade. if you do not, it's going to be hot. give yourself a little extra time before you sit down on that hot leather. or else you might burn your buns. the pbay area has a little bit f fog. we are talking about a big spread. temperatures are about 30 degrees warmer out in the tri-valley versus the immediate coast. so the ocean beach side of san francisco only getting up to the low to mid-60s for today as the fog returns. it will be 77 degrees bayside.
6:49 am
and 101 out in the tri-valley. make sure you're ready for the heat. and it might be a nice thing to do, if you are working outdoors, drop off a water bottle. 88 degrees in the peninsula. grab yourself an extra water bottle out in the east bay. 101 for you. and 93 degrees out in the tri-valley and wine country where it will be the warmest today. cooling back to average by the end of the week. this is it. we'll steadily drop the numbers as we get into the next three days. so fortoday, san jose, the 90s. tomorrow, the 70s for wednesday to thursday. and then we'll boost the numbers up just a touch as we get into father's day weekend. so, we will see temperatures return to comfortable levels in a couple days. we just have to wait for that. something you don't have to wait for are giants, they are in town with us through father's day. that's day game on sunday. a great day to take dad to the ballpark. the a's will be home on sunday as well. look at the temperatures, comfortable levels for you.
6:50 am
we are watching the wind the next couple of nights, so make sure to grab the jacket if you're headed to the yard. let's check your drive with mike. certainly any wind at at&t park is much less to contend with than at the old stick, we know that for sure. here our manuals and automatics are flowing nicely northbound 101 north of 680. no crashes reported through the area, but that is when all the folks are hitting the roadway and are meeting at the interchange. that's a slower drive from the capital expressway up to the airport. northbound 280 and 85 are building over the last ten mi h minutes. the rest of the commute is slow through livermore near the dublin interchange focusing southbound on 680 showing the volume building through sunol. slowing down into fremont, but nothing dramatic. over here as you would expect, a lighter flow off westbound 580. a gentle build through hayward and union city. gentle traffic in union city. and near the san mateo bridge,
6:51 am
we have a sudden slowdown with the traffic dragging now. but that's better than five minutes ago. no crashes on the span. every one is hitting the focal point. back to the map, the rest of the traffic along 880 out to the bay bridge toll plaza, 58 is looking good through downtown with your slowing for the east shore freeway. that's west 580 off the san rafael bridge. we'll look at the berkeley curve slowing a bit, but it is not until you get to the curve that it is slow for 580. and westbound off 24 you see the cars approaching the tollway itself. thank you, mike. new this morning an overnight fire in san francisco damaged a dry cleaner business in the city's bay view district. this is near the intersection of 3rd street and hudson avenue. when fires arrived, the flames
6:52 am
were so intense they called for backup but they were able to confine the fire to the dry cleaners and saved a sandwich stop next door. right now investigators are trying to figure out if anyone lived above the dry cleaners, but at this point it appears no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is now under investigation. also new this morning, a woman was taken away in an ambulance after she was hit by an oakland police suv. witnesses say the woman was crossing international boulevard near 84th avenue last night when she was hit. the officer's lights and sirens were off but so far no confirmation from the department. the woman was taken to the hospital complaining about pain in her arm. the officer was not hurt. it's unclear whether the officer was headed to a call when that crash occurred. the mayor of oakland took to twitter and facebook to defend herself against allegations she was talking on her cell phone when she got into a car crash in west oakland. stephanie chuang is live in oakland and the mayor says this is not a case of distracted driving and says she will prove
6:53 am
it. >> reporter: that's right, kris, good morning. the mayor says she'll prove it through cell phone records that she'll give to police, but witnesses telling us that regardless of whether she was on her cell phone at the time, it appears she ran a red light. officially, police here in the traffic division at oakland police headquarters still have to determine who was at fault. there's cell phone video captured after the crash at 5:30 last night in west oakland. and it appears that mayor quan in green is checking on the people in the other car, a woman and a 14-year-old boy. the mayor was driving alone in her lexus suv when her car collided with a nissan on 26th street. this accident coming just days after pictures surfaced of the mayor talking on her cell phone while driving. as for last night's crash, one witness didn't see if the mayor was on her phone but added she was not paying attention. >> she was completely distracted. she was looking down, was not looking at the road.
6:54 am
so i don't think she noticed that the light had turned red. >> reporter: now mayor quan put out a statement last night on social media writing, i am also submitting my phone records to the investigators which will confirm i was not on my phone at the time. i'm grateful that nobody was reported injured. please stay safe out there and look out for one another. however, the other driver in the crash told us that her back hurt and that she was going to the hospital along with her 14-year-old nephew as a precaution. the mayor was not injured. mayor quan saying she was going from one community event to another when the crash happened when the car hit her suv. that remains to be seen. what appears to be a minor collision could be a substantial problem as the mayor is seeking re-election this fall. live in oakland, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> it will be interesting to see what the phone records say. the i mayor chuck reed is
6:55 am
going to be supporting sam liccardo. he will face santa clara's supervisor dave cortese in the election this november. a review of construction records and e-mail from the company that built the bay bridge found that we'll probably be spending millions of dollars on repairs in the years to come. according to a report by the sacramento bee, the department of transportation picked a chinese company to build the bridge despite the fact the companied that no experience building bridges. the paper says officials apparently thought the company would work faster and cost about $250 million less than the next lowest bidder, but the report also found that in order to get the work done quickly some of it did not meet code and will probably have to be fixed down the road. the department is still defending its decision. the price of apple stocks dropped significantly this morning, but nobody is panicking. >> bob redell is live outside apple headquarters in cupertino. starting today, shares will only
6:56 am
be worth 1/7 of the price, but that's not a bad thing. >> reporter: well, look at what it closed at, apple's stock on friday there, kris and scott, around $645 a share. a pretty fairly pricey investment. well, this morning it opened at around $92 and change. and that's because of a 7:1 stock split that the company put into effect yesterday. so anyone who is a shareholder of owning stock on june 2nd will receive an additional six chairs of stock for every one share they held. so if you had 15 shares earlier that rallied near $10,000, now you have 105 shares of apple stock but your investment is still around $10,000. now, companies like apple generally do this to build excitement in their stock among small investors who might not have been able to afford it before. we don't know if that's the case. that's why the stock split may have happened at this time.
6:57 am
and they may have wanted to be included in the stocks that make up the 30 dow jones industrial average. apple is now at a reasonable price of $92 and change. this is the fourth stock split in apple's history. the previous three were 2:1 splits. one time the stock jumped around 2%. the other time it went up 60%. and a third time it plunged 57%. so this morning you can take a look. it is up maybe, i believe, .23%. so if you listened to me 20 minutes ago when i said buy, buy, buy, you clearly lost out on this opportunity because it is skyrocketing. >> makes sense to me. >> reporter: a blind chimpanzee with a dart board would be doing better than me. >> bob redell out in cupertino.
