"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm dara brown. in the history-making upset, house majority leader eric cantor lost his republican primary election by double digits. cantor, the second most powerful republican in the house, was defeated by tea party challenger dave brat. brat won by a commanding 12% margin. it was an astonishing upset for cantor whose own internal polling showed him with a 34 of-point lead just last month. and cantor outraised his opponent by 26-1. nbc's tracie potts joins us live. tracie, what is this going to mean for washington? >> reporter: certainly a shuffle, dara, in the republican leadership. and we're already this morning starting to see names of people popping up who are interested in that position. speaking of leadership, cantor was actually here starting today in a leadership meeting and not

back in his district when those votes started. >> this is a miracle of god that just happened. >> reporter: it's certainly unprecedented, never has a house majority leader lost his seat in a primary. >> and it's disappointing, sure. >> reporter: and this was a crushing defeat, with most precincts in, cantor was behind 10 percentage points. >> obviously, we came up short. >> what do we want? when do we want it? now! >> reporter: cantor was hammered for supporting the dream act, like these activists at his victory party last night, cantor fought back, reminding voters that he led the fight against amnesty, but it wasn't enough. >> eric cantor's defeat here is going to scare more and more republicans from touching this. >> reporter: the ripping effect of this upset goes far beyond virginia. it's proof that the tea party is not dead. key republicans in north carolina, kentucky and idaho won

their primaries. mississippi's incumbent has been forced into a runoff. now cantor is out. despite spending 40 times as much as his opponent. >> dollars do not vote. you do. >> reporter: a $5 million campaign and the voters said no. now, we do have a democrat running in this race. it's a heavily republican district, but yet there is a democrat who was just recently nominated, turns out that democrat who's running against brat, they're both professors at the same college. two little-known candidates vying for the seat that cantor's going to have to give up. >> thank you, tracie. that comes up in november. and dave brat woman over the voters as well as many of his students. brat who teaches at randolph macon college has a rating of 3.4 out of a 5 on ratemyprofessors.com. students also gave him a chili pepper, meaning he's considered

pretty hot as in good-looking. at least one called him eye candy. another said he's so charming, you forget to be mad at him. college students from schools across the country use the website to rate their professors on overall quality, easiness, clarity and looks. and as tracie mentioned, the race wasn't the only contested republican primary. in south carolina, establishment republican senator lindsey graham handily defeated six tea party challengers in the primary. he even avoided a runoff election by carrying 59% of the vote. and senator tim scott easily won south carolina's special senate primary with about 90% of the vote over his challenger, randall young. if he wins later on in the general election, scott could become the state's first elected black senator. emotional scenes in the portland town of troutdale. people came together for two separate vigils following tuesday's deadly shooting at an oregon high school. hundreds gathered at a

student-organized ceremony to remember the 14-year-old victim. an official church vigil was also held just hours earlier. police are still trying to determine why the gunman opened fire at the school. they have not revealed the identity of the suspect who was found dead at the scene. following the shooting, president obama said no other developed nation would tolerate the same level of gun violence. >> my biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who, you know, can do just unbelievable damage. >> president obama has pushed for tougher gun-control measures including stricter background checks, but he continues to face fierce opposition from gun rights advocates. and a resounding victory for veterans across the country. the house voted quickly and unanimously in favor of a new bill. the vote was 421-0.

the new measure allows veterans use of medical facilities outside the system if they're forced to wait for more than 30 days for an appointment or if they live more than 40 miles from a v.a. center. the house bill is a response to recent controversy over allegations the v.a. kept secret waiting lists to cover up lengthy delays. and fresh details are emerging about the death of five american soldiers killed in afghanistan. u.s. officials said the troops may have died in an apparent friendly fire air strike. defense officials tell nbc the soldiers were part of a special ops unit that included three green bereted and two soldiers. they were working with afghan forces ahead of the presidential election this weekend. the soldiers were conducting security checks at polling stations on monday when they were attacked by taliban fighters, forcing them to call for backup. an america b-1 bomber but mistook the target mistakingly hitting the troops. military officials are investigating the incident.

an alarming health alert from the cdc. new stats show the diabetes epidemic is growing at an alarmting rate. more than 29 million people in the u.s. have diabetes. close to 10% of the population. yet a quarter of them don't even know it. also, more than one in three americans are pre-diabetic. that means they have elevated blood sugar levels that put them at risk for type 2 diabetes. diabetes can lead to vision loss, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations and even death. a california mayor is in deep -- after surveillance video captured him throwing dog poop on a neighbor's lawn. san marino mayor dennis caner can be seen flinging the bag while walking past the house. he claims the mayor threw it in retaliation for his opposition to a neighborhood dog park. the mayor who is not a dog owner told nbc southern california he couldn't remember where he got the bag and that he simply

leading the news from nbc's southern california, man pleads not guilty to stalking sandra bullock. police say joshua james corbett broke into her home on sunday. he is charged with felony possession of a machine gun, although prosecutors say he didn't have the gun while on bullock's property. and yahoo! news, attempted robbery unfolds on gamer's livestreaming webcam. two men broke into the gamer's arizona home and part of the robbery was caught on camera. viewers of the stream took to message boards reddit and other services to figure out where she lived. officers arrived a short time later. one suspect was arrested, but one did get away. some other stories that we are watching, a close call for a backpacker in yosemite when he almost went over yosemite falls. it happened back in may when the
