good morning. stunning upset. the second most powerful person in the house, majority leader eric cantor, ousted, beaten by a little-known tea party backed candidate in virginia's republican primary. >> this is a miracle from god that just happened. >> an historic defeat, sending shockwaves through washington and the nation. not again. yet another deadly school shooting, the 74th since sandy hook. one student killed, a teacher wounded. the president lashing out in frustration. >> our levels of gun violence are off the charts. there's no advanced developed country on earth that would put up with this. 20 years later. it's been two decades since the infamous murders of o.j.
7:01 am
simpson's ex-wife and her friend. this morning the evidence the jury never heard, and three key players from that trial speak out exclusively. ron goldman's father and sister, and simpson house guest kato kaelin. and betting on controversy? the message behind this giant jesus hot air balloon tied to the world cup. it's drawing criticism around the world today, wednesday, june 11th, 2014. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. a busy news day. we've got a lot to get to. but boy, that anniversary, 20th anniversary tomorrow of the killing of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman. a lot of people are going to stop and think where they were when they heard that news. >> we have three people in our green room who will never forget that moment.
7:02 am
we've got kato kaelin, kim and fred goldman, the sister and father of victim ron goldman. we'll look back with them, including, as you said, some of the evidence the jury never heard in that trial. >> we'll get to that a little later. we want to start this morning with our top story, the fallout over house majority leader eric cantor suffering a primary defeat that no one saw coming, not even the man who defeated him. kelly o'donnell is on capitol hill. kelly, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this is a history-making surprise. eric cantor is the first house majority leader since that role was created in 1899, to lose that job. and cantor was widely expected to be the republicans' next choice to be house speaker, but a newcomer with a fraction of cantor's money and organization was able to topple one of the most powerful republicans in congress. the virginia shocker. >> look, obviously we came up short. >> reporter: eric cantor, the house republican majority leader, is knocked out. >> i know there's a lot of long
7:03 am
faces here tonight, and it's disappointing, sure. >> reporter: cantor's defeat is one of the most head-snapping upsets in modern politics. >> this is a big deal, these kinds of things. it never happens, and there was no clue that it was going to happen. >> reporter: beaten by a little-known and poorly funded tea party challenger named david brat, who teaches college economics and has never held public office. >> this is a miracle from god that just happened. >> reporter: brat's surprise victory is also a serious blow to any slim chance for immigration reform. demonstrators erupted after cantor's concession. brat hammered cantor's past support for legal status for children of undocumented immigrants. >> now he's working behind the scenes to push through amnesty. >> reporter: cantor also took heat from conservative commentators like radio host laura ingram, who made cantor the butt of a joke involving
7:04 am
president obama. >> maybe, you know, for getting sergeant bergdahl out of captivity, instead of sending five mvp taliban leaders, he could have sent eric cantor. >> reporter: so part of the surprise was the big well-known national tea party groups had not been here supporting david brat, that made it more unexpected. part of this now will go beyond virginia's seventh district with a void in the house gop leadership in a real scramble to see who will be chosen as the next majority leader and next potential successor to john boehner when he ultimately decides to step down as speaker. matt, savannah? >> kelly, thank you. let's bring in chuck todd. nbc's political director and chief white house correspondent. good morning. i guess choose your colorful word. stunner, shocker. i think i heard someone say apocalyptic. the question is why did no one see this coming?
7:05 am
i felt like i saw something a week ago that said eric cantor had this locked up, no sweat. >> virginia, notoriously low turnout in primaries. they usually don't pick noom nominees for primaries. so low turnout. the issue of immigration, particularly in the south, immigration is just the one issue that animates the conservative base in a way we haven't seen anywhere. and then add in what's happened in the last 72 hours, the coverage of the crisis of these unaccompanied minors that have been crossing the border. it gave urgency to dave brat's message at the perfect time, in a perfect situation. low turnout. it all came together. and i think that's why it blind sided eric cantor. >> and it's not just about eric cantor. i mean, this is going to have broad implications in the political world. there has been so much talk this election season that maybe the tea party had finally lost its umph. it hadn't been able to unseat major established candidates. and here we go, seeing something
7:06 am
that has literally never happened before in the history of our nation. does this show the tea party's still got it? >> it shows you there's an issue the tea party can grab on to. it used to be the debt. then it was health care. now it's immigration. i think that's what people need to be careful with. don't just throw this under the umbrella of tea party. this is about immigration and this, by the way, means immigration reform during the rest of the obama presidency. the idea that it's going to happen is dead. it is not going to happen in 2016. >> and very quickly on that, is anything going to happen? i guess the question is whether republicans will be so spooked by someone in such a strong position of leadership being vulnerable that they won't want to compromise even one bit. >> i think the new mascot of the establishment wing of the republican party is going to be the turtle. i think you're going to see a whole bunch of these guys retreat into their shells like turtles. they're going to be afraid to do anything the rest of this legislative cycle. anybody that might be facing a primary, forget it. i think legislating is done. >> hold on there, because there's another story with
7:07 am
pretty big political implications i want you to weigh in on. it is the latest deadly school shooting. the gunman has now been identified as a student at reynolds high school in the small town of troutdale, oregon. the victim was a fellow student just 14 years old. nbc's miguel almaguer has more on this story. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. since the mass shooting in newtown a year and a half ago, there have been 74 school shootings. that's roughly one a week. two students here lost their lives on tuesday. students who should be celebrating, this was to be their last day of school today. instead, they are grieving. it's a scene all too familiar. heartbreak in a place where kids should be safe. >> two people shot, one is down. >> reporter: tuesday, 8:00 a.m. shots fired at reynolds high school outside portland, oregon. >> we've got shots fired. >> i heard three gunshots to start off with, and then about 30 seconds to a minute later, i heard three or four more gunshots. >> reporter: the gunman kills 14-year-old emilio hoffman, a popular freshman.
7:08 am
>> i would have some of the hardest days of my life and he would make me smile. >> reporter: p.e. teacher todd rispler is wounded but will recover. the shooter, identified by a law enforcement source as a student, was armed with a high-powered rifle and is believed to have taken his own life. >> we are not in a position to 100% confirm his name and age at this time. >> reporter: as a s.w.a.t. team sweeps the campus, terrified parents wait for word, praying their children are safe. >> i just want to hug my girl. i just want to hold her. i just want to hold her >> reporter: with hands raised over their heads, police frisk everyone, and now say a second student not connected to the shooting was also armed with a gun. in the past 18 days alone, there have been four high profile shootings west of the rockies. 14 people killed. >> mass shootings do often have
7:09 am
some sort of copycat influence, so there can be a contagion effect. >> reporter: a troubling trend with deadly consequences, and so many innocent lives lost. detectives say they have no motive, as is so common in these incidents, they fear they will never have answers. savannah? >> miguel, thank you very much. meantime, president obama spoke out following that school shooting. this is the 74th school shooting since sandy hook. he had some pretty strong words. take a look. >> we're the only developed country on earth where this happens. and it happens now once a week. and it's a one-day story. there's no place else like this. the united states does not have a monopoly on crazy people. it's not the only country that has psychosis.
7:10 am
and yet, we kill each other in these mass shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than any place else. >> chuck, pretty extraordinary moment. what's your take on it? >> it was. he talked about the limits of what he could get done. he said he tried but this is really about congress. what was amazing is i thought he was very blunt. it was cogent political analysis. but boy, savannah, you and i covered this campaign together. you and i covered him in '08. that's not yes, we can, president obama. it is suddenly yes, i tried. he is a guy that has been noticing the limits of his power lately, rather than having the audacity or the ambition to just try even when it's hard. >> chuck todd with a lot of big stories in politics this morning. thank you. meanwhile, there is new debate over the release of bowe bergdahl, it's taking center stage on capitol hill. natalie is here with more on that. >> defense secretary chuck hagel will face angry lawmakers today

in critical but stable condition. in south texas, a flood of immigrants from central america is straining the resources of the federal government, and as chuck mentioned, of special concern are the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children coming in. nbc's mark potter was there tuesday night when yet another group arrived from mexico. >> reporter: just before sundown near mission, texas, three adults and 14 children from el salvador walk across a dam near the rio grande, making their way illegally into the united states. they are thirsty and tired from a long journey. moments after crossing over from mexico, they are spotted by local and u.s. authorities. but instead of running, the immigrants walk to one of the police cars. there, they are all given water, including the youngest member of the group, a little girl. this teenager, who arrived with his mom, says he and others are fleeing gang violence in el salvador, and now that he's in the u.s., he feels safe. children in the group say they've come here hoping to reunite with their parents

"dumb and dumber to," that's with a t-o, hits theaters in

we're back now at 8:41 with more of one of the country's most popular shows. it's not technically on television. netflix's "orange is the new black" is the lovable story of a group of women serving time in a minimum security prison. we talked to members of the cast on tuesday. well, this morning, four more of the show's unforgettable stars. we've got kate mulgrew, natasha lyonne, pablo sheron, and danielle brooks. i'm so tempted to say your
8:42 am
character's name. something mustache. season two just released a few days ago. how have the last few days been? apparently people are just watching all 13 episodes in one go. >> have you seen any of it yourself? >> i'm still in season one. >> it's a good thing because you are with child. >> is it disturbing? >> i think it's pretty bold. >> really? >> it's not for the pregnant or children. >> i don't know that it turns darker, but i think the stakes are raised considerably on all levels, correct? >> all levels. >> okay. >> even porn stash. >> there you go. that is your character's name. >> there you go. the cat's out of the bag. don't say porn on live tv! there he is. >> let's talk about it, pablo. you're not a good guy in this at all. >> it's correct. >> is the power of your character in the stache? >> oh god, yeah.
8:43 am
clearly you can see i'm a whole different person. i have no power left anymore. it's been taken away from me. yeah, the stache is an incredible thing. i think the half mullet is also part of my power. >> the stache and the gravy. >> and danielle, we know you as tasty. that's your character. i love your story. you just graduated from juilliard a couple years ago? >> yeah, three years ago, 2011. >> are you pinching yourself? >> yeah, it's crazy. i'm sitting here with all of these guys, taking this journey. it's so exciting for me. i'm so grateful. >> what i love is the cast is so diverse. we need two days to get you all on. that doesn't ursually happen. natasha, why do you think this show resonates so much? >> sorry if i was pinching me. why do i think the show is what? >> why do you think it resonates so much?
8:44 am
>> i just think we've been so inundated with the botoxing. >> pablo's being so bad. just going to move his hand over here. >> the thing is, you know, pablo's just helping me to be my best self this morning and i really appreciate it. >> the e-cigarette didn't help. >> it was actually r. kelly. did help me wake up this morning. >> behave. >> i just think it's sort of a response -- we've been seeing so many fake things for so long. i think as a country and species, we're probably hungry for something different. >> real. >> real, yes. well said. kate, you had the cast over for thanksgiving at your house? >> i didn't. >> that's what i heard. >> another guy invented that one. >> i was there and the food was excellent. it was terrific. out of this world, kate. >> some people have said -- i think it was the website dig put together a compilation of all the food scenes in the show. they say you could argue this is
8:45 am
a cooking show set in a women's prison, they just showed all the different food. >> in season one, but i don't think in season two. >> because things have changed for your character. >> things have changed in the kitchen. the prowess in the kitchen has left. >> but danielle, you said that food is gross? >> yes, it is. >> as it looks? >> yes, it is. >> what are you talking about. >> i'm saying danielle the actor does not enjoy the food. tasty does. >> nothing wrong with those baloney sandwich. you had them often. >> they were delicious. >> piper insulted the food. >> gave her a different kind of sandwich. >> i'll never get that image out of my head. it's great to have you all here. thank you, kate, natasha, pablo, and danielle. thank you so much. and again, "orange is the new black" is on netflix. you can watch all of it right now. coming up next, what could have possibly eaten a ten-foot great white shark? we'll tell you about the
8:46 am
frightening hunt for a possible super predator with a woman who spends her time diving for sharks. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:47 am
8:48 am
back now at 8:48 with the mysterious disappearance of a large great white shark that has scientists on the hunt for a so-called super predator. here's nbc's kerry sanders. >> reporter: it's a terrifying prospect, and a fascinating mystery. the possibility that in the depths of the ocean off australia, there may be an unknown predator so big it's able to devour a ten-foot shark. >> a question that not only came to my mind, but everyone's mind who was involved, but what did that? what's going to eat a shark that big? >> reporter: film maker dave briggs started out 11 years ago documenting a scientific project to tag sharks. one, a ten-foot female, code named shark alpha.
8:49 am
>> i remember looking at one of them thinking well, she's just a magnificent looking animal. >> reporter: but just four months later, shark alpha's tag, similar to this one, washed ashore. the mystery now explored in a new smithsonian channel documentary. the tag recorded that shark alpha dove 1,900 feet in just seconds, but the temperature, instead of going down as expected, actually went up, from 46 to 78 degrees. >> it was obviously eaten. >> reporter: but by what? shark expert ralph collier said it could have been almost anything. >> it could be another shark. it could be a marine mammal, a whale. some people have suggested giant squid. >> reporter: just this week off the coast of jupiter, florida, boaters spotted a great white, currently the top predator in the world's oceans, or as some scientists are now asking, could there be an even bigger super predator out there?
8:50 am
for "today," kerry sanders, nbc news, miami. >> dunn dunn dunn. our next guest started free diving with sharks when she was only 7 years old. now 20, madison stewart has dedicated the last six years of her life fighting to protect sharks. she's just completed her debut documentary. it's called shark girl. good to see you, good morning. >> good morning. >> we'll talk about your documentary in a second, but why don't we just put a little exclamation point on what we just saw. what do you think happened to that ten-foot great white? >> whatever it was, i know i want to dive with it. >> you really want to see it? >> yes. >> do you think there is such a thing as a super predator shark? >> wouldn't it be amazing if there was. there has been in the past, but they're extinct now, that we know of. the thing is, i think it's a good example of what the media does with sharks. sharks get eaten by other sharks. it could have been a bigger shark or a super mystery predator. >> so you brought up the media. why do you think the media in particular is so fascinated by sharks? >> we love to have monsters. and sharks fit that description
8:51 am
perfectly. the only time we see them is when there's a shark attack that's happened and the news does this bloodthirsty killer. even shark week does it. everyone likes to play up how dangerous they are. it's not easy for people to go see sharks themselves, so they believe it. >> you have seen so many up close in the wild, in the ocean. you've been diving ie ining sin were a little girl. does any part of them scare you? are you cautious when you're down there? >> the only thing about sharks that scares me is that i've seen them disappear from areas around their reef. we've always got a level of respect for them. we never pretend that they're harmless because they're not. but imagine you know your dog really well and he may look vicious to other people, but he's not. and that's what it's like with shark. >> what do sharks in particular teach us about the health of our oceans? >> sharks are so incredibly important to our oceans. there's been places in the ocean in the past where they've been taken out and the ecosystem has collapsed around them. they are the top predator. they're at the top of the food
8:52 am
chain so there's relatively few of them as well, which is ironic because they're also the one species that we want to get rid of. >> we spent a lot of time in australia. you dive a lot at the great barrier reef. what changes have you seen in that reef that you've been dive sfg. >> i grew up loving sharks. they're my favorite. there's a great change in their population. it's the only reason i got involved in conservation. we take sharks legally through commercial fisheries each year in australia. and people eat shark meat and shark liver oil is in our cosmetics. if we saw a rhino horn for sale, it would be outrage, but it's happening to sharks. you can go in to any chemist and buy shark products and they're for sale at our supermarkets. so they're this neglected species. >> do you think we'll ever fully understand everything that lives in the ocean? >> no. and that's a good thing. one thing i love about sharks is they're one of the last animals on this planet that you can still have a wild interaction with. we get in the water with them with nothing but our knowledge
8:53 am
of them to protect us. we know they're the top predators, but hundreds of people have recreational interactions with sharks on a daily basis. >> you speak beautifully on their behalf. it's nice having you here. you can see the documentary "shark girl" this sunday night on the smithsonian channel. and hunt for the super predator airs on the same network on wednesday, june 25th. we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc. you used to sleep like a champ. then boom... what happened? stress, fun, bad habits, kids, now what?

well, something huge and earth shattering happened. on tuesday, matt joined facebook. he had his first live chat. >> with your help. >> yes. and tamron -- >> more than help. >> don't you feel that we learned a little bit more about matt? >> yeah, it's kind of a top ten list that we broke down to a cup of thing. but that's savannah assisting matt. if you want to see the complete facebook chat, it's still on our facebook page. we need a drum roll of things that we learned about matt. aspiring architect. what does that mean? >> i'm a big fan of architecture. i have no skill at it. but i would love to do it if i weren't doing this. >> pepperoni equals sunshine. >> somebody asked me my favorite topping for pizza. all about pepperoni. >> this was a popular question, favorite where in the world, easter island. what did you love? >> those statues that they carved out of the local rock. they're just stunning and they're everywhere on the island. >> you love that passover

peninsula, too. [ laughter ] >> yeah. tamron, i'll explain that to you later. thank you, tamron. that was fun. and by the way, sometimes when you're typing something on your iphone, you say typos courtesy of my iphone. typos courtesy of savannah. >> a lot of pressure. >> we've got a very good morning to you. 8:56 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the national parks service looking for historical lbgt signs to make national landmarks. they're considering places like san francisco city hall, where the same same-sex marriages took place, as well as dozens of bars, taverns, and the nation's largest lbgt museum. i want to check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, good morning to you, laura. good morning to you at home. it's a little breezy out there,

9:00 am
from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist, and tamron hall, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. it's june 11th, 2014. nice crowd out on the plaza as the rain has held. i'm willie geist along with al roker, tamron hall. natalie had to leave a bit early. good to have you back, tamron. >> thank you, thank you. >> we misyou when you're not here. >> but i was with my family. my nephew graduated. >> what did you get him for a present? >> i got him something good. >> oh. sounds exciting. >> let's talk about, my gosh, another day, another school shooting. this time it's reynolds high school outside portland, oregon.
9:01 am
troutdale, oregon, to be specific. a law enforcement source says the shooter was believed to be a student armed with a high-powered rifle. there's no known motive at this time. one student was killed, 14-year-old freshman emilio hoffman, described as a very popular young man. physical education teacher todd rispler was wounded. we're told he'll recover. there were vigils with students shouting "we love you, emilio." >> this statistic is mind boggling. >> 74 school shootings since newtown, that's december of 2012. 74. that's just more than one a week on average. the president of the united states had some very harsh words after this latest shooting. >> a lot of people will say, well, it's a mental health problem. it's not a gun problem. the united states does not have a monopoly on crazy people. it's not the only country that has psychosis.
9:02 am
and yet, we kill each other in these mass shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than any place else. the country has to do some soul searching about this. this is becoming the norm. and we take it for granted. in ways that as a parent are terrifying to me. >> and that's the scary part right there. this becomes commonplace. >> now when i go into a mall, i'm looking at how am i getting out. i really do think about that. when i get into a movie theater, i now look, where are the exits. and i don't think it's paranoia. i really don't. >> the president makes a point about soul searching. as i said, i'm from texas. red part of this country. i heard a political analyst on "morning joe" say perhaps the
9:03 am
people in the middle need to speak up more. we talk a lot about the extreme so-called right, the extreme so-called left. but when you look at polling, overwhelmingly, there is support for some kind of quote unquote common sense legislation. so we look at these extremes of our country right now and the divisiveness, but when you look at it by the numbers, there's support overwhelmingly from the middle, and so you have some out there who say it is time for those people to seek up more, and perhaps come up with a compromise. so we're not doing the story 74 times in a year since newtown. >> which then leads to something like this, this bodyguard blanket. the idea that -- to help protect school kids. >> what is it? >> it's a bullet resistant pad that's designed for kids and teachers in the event of school protection. you use it for tornado protection. it's been on sale for 11 days.
9:04 am
it's about a thousand bucks from this company called protect. they have not sold any yet. they claim it passes the national institute of justice level three classification for body armor. >> your sides are exposed. and the fear factor of running. they market it as something to protect your 5-year-old or middle schooler or high school kid. someone starts shooting, you're not going to go in the corner and put this over. you're going to likely run, which is what i would want my child to do, or any child, or whatever the teacher has told them that we've seen in other tragedies like newtown where the teachers were composed enough to save lives. >> the company does go out of its way to point out this is not a solution. this is not the 100% perfect -- >> it's just another layer to try to help in the worst case scenario. >> it speaks to the desperation, but the larger conversation is not a blanket. it's what we're going to do to save our kids. another story that's, you know, in the news and people are reacting to on social media, 20 years ago, nicole brown simpson
9:05 am
and her friend ronald goldman were found dead in brentwood, california. we know that that set off the events that ended with the trial of the century, is what it was called, the o.j. simpson case. everyone remembers, of course, the infamous chase down the 405, the bronco with o.j. simpson in the back there. i was a reporter in dallas at the time when this started. i know you guys surely remember where you were. where were you, al? >> i was at a friend's wife's birthday party in a restaurant and everybody was crowded into the bar watching this. i mean, it was riveting. then the rumors were that o.j. had committed suicide. it was an insane 48-hour period. >> absolutely. you know, you think about it, the things that came out of that, the tragedy, the awareness of domestic violence, which the court case ended one way, but it was undeniable that there had been domestic violence in that relationship.
9:06 am
and also the loss, the families, and what the family members of people who are victims of violence, how they react with the spectacular media spectacle that was hovering over it. so this morning, ron goldman's family kim, his sister and his father fred were guests on this show, as well as kato kaelin, who was a house guest of o.j. simpson, they talked about it 20 years later and how they feel. let's listen. >> i look at that picture and it makes me so sad. because, you know, the sadness on that girl's face in that picture. >> you say that girl. it doesn't even seem like you anymore? >> because i don't feel like i'm her as much anymore. i still carry that angst and that grief with me. but i walk with a little bit more composure now and a little stronger position. but it's heartbreaking to see that, and i was crushed, obviously. >> and that was her -- kato kaelin also spoke about people described him as a free loader. we saw the glare of the media and how people can be categorized. here's how he talked about how the trial defined his life.
9:07 am
