home. the s.w.a.t team is set up at ward and girard right next to highway 101. that situation is ongoing and right now authorities won't let anyone near the area. the man wanted for questioning in a domestic violence incident locked himself inside a home. police are now looking into reports that there are two children inside that home with him. the domestic violence incident reportedly happened at another location but we're not told where or what happened there. the man accused of beating and carjacking an elderly woman in el cerrito is under arrest this morning. tips led investigators to oakland where they found terrance hardy and took him into custody without incident. accused of beating an 89-year-old woman in the parking lot of a cvs drugstore and stealing her car over the weekend. the woman was treated for broken collar bone and her car has not been found. the former b.a.r.t. officer will be back on the stand tomorrow to face more questions.

that officer joheannes mehserle is being sued by grant's father. mehserle testified he accidentally grabbed his gun instead of his taser and shot him on new year's day in 2009. mehserle also said yesterday in court thought grant was reaching for a gun. rick perry facing heat this morning for controversial comments he made during a speech at san francisco's commonwealth club. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live from san francisco and he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. >> we're live outside the headquarters of commonwealth club of california here in san francisco. it's what organizers and this talk by the governor was supposed to focus on energy independence and the governor compared being gay to being an

alcoholic. he tweeted out a picture of him front and center last night. according to "the chronicle" the interviewer ask eed perry if he believes homosehomosexuality is disorder. whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not you have the ability to decide not to do that. i may have the genetic coding that i may be an alcoholic but i'm incli have the desire not t that. give people access to reparative therapy, which is intended to change sexual orientation from gay to straight. last night perry reportedly said he didn't know if the therapy worked. reparative therapy for minors is already banned. earlier this week the governor spent time driving around in a tesla in sacramento. on twitter he posted the only

bring a jacket with you, but, as you know, our cool days are numbered at this point as we head into the next couple months, july and august, we are talking about peak warmth for the year. enjoy the 70s while they last and i can always tell you, i'm looking 15 days out. these days, today and tomorrow the coolest of the next 10 to 15. 5 52 degrees in santa rosa and the good news is we're not going to climb by all that much as we get into your weekend and temperatures will stay steady in the 80s and trade in the 70s for the 80s as of tomorrow. your average high out in the tri-valley 79 degrees and today a little below 70 degrees for you. 62 at the coast where we average 64 this time of year. so, let's get right to it. the south bay 74 degrees for today and 77 out in the north bay and comfortable conditions will continue all the way into your father's day weekend. look at these numbers. not too hot, and not too cold. even in san francisco, you'll be

at 69 degrees on saturday and a touch warmer in your inland valley spots on friday than what we're expecting on saturday. not too bad. crank up that heat and on the seven-day forecast talk more about that coming up. right now, let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. >> the metering lights are not turned on but look at the bay bridge toll plaza and the backup at the toll plaza in all lanes and slow coming off the incline through the metering lights and we're likely to see those on any minute and an issue as far as the delay or think the volume is okay. not the expert on the metering lights and we'll look at the maps and talk about the traffic i do watch and i do see that volume increasing. i'm going to guess they're turning them on in the next couple seconds. a smoother drive after all lanes are cleared because of earlier emergency repair work and we did have one lane closed and, again, all cleared there. over here, this is what we're talking about, that police standoff in san francisco and near ward and just south, bay shore boulevard, those are the

ones off of highway 101, they are clear, and just south of the incident and watching, again, the 100 block of ward. locals are concerned and the rest of the traffic flow moving smoothly. the rest of your bay moves pretty nicely as we look at the map over here and zoom back over towards the hayward side. a video we shot a few minutes ago, the overcrossing at tennison, you see the fence is gone. a car took out a portion of that fence, hanging over the freeway and that car stayed on the bridge. hanging over the edge and they pulled it. everybody is safe from that area, but we have that lane closed. the collector lane. the on and off ramp sort of merged there and closed northbound 880 just underneath that overcrossing there for the time being. tri-valley nice flow through livermore and dublin. b.a.r.t. is also recovering as we come back over to the desk and b.a.r.t. delays out of west

not a problem as far as fog is concerned. those are the metering lights and i'm watching them and they're not on yet. look at the jam westbound. taillights stacking up all the way back past the toll plaza and towards the berkeley curve. watching that commute and the closure of the lane over in hayward, coming up. here are today's top stories. police in phoenix are looking for the person who lobroke into church and, investigators say they originally went to the church to look into a burgly report. police are questioning a man in connection with a domestic violence incident. he is locked in his home all night and won't let police home. they say there could be children in that home, as well. the number of americans filing for unemployment benefits was up last week but claims for jobless are at higher levels.

the commerce department says retail sales rose for the second, rather the fourth straight month in may. it is 6:12. one week from today republicans will vote on who will replace eric canter as majority leader. the top three in the running, two texans and a congressman from central california. cantor announced he was stepping down after a defeat on tuesday night. he says he'll step down at the end of july and back the party's number three kevin mccarthy to replace him. >> i think he'd make an outstanding majority leader. >> let's see what happens. i think we work very well together. >> two texans also in the running, jeb hensarling. if mccarthy wins, republicans will need a new whip and republicans are throwing their names in the ring for that job. the upcoming ipo by go pro. in the latest filing with the sec go pro plans to sell almost 18 million shares at about $24 a

share. that would value the company close to $3 billion. the company also appears to be taking care of its employees, allowing them to sell their shares immediately. no word yet on the exact date of the ipo. new this morning, expanding its restaurant beyond the bay area. the cafe chain opening up a location in l.a. it will serve up more than the usual fare. the chain will cater and night crowd with sandwich and burgers and cocktails. back in 2012 for about $100 million in cash. california ride sharing companies have two weeks to stop giving rides to and from airp t airports or risk being shut down altogether. bob redell is live outside san jose airport and this is something that state regulators say that the companies are doing that isn't by the rules. >> that is correct. good morning to you, kris. the rules state you must have

permission from that airport, along with a permit to operate a ride service to and from airports like normanetta. but as our investigative unit reported last week, mobile on demand companies like uber-x and sidecar just to name a few are skirting those regulations picking up and dropping off fares at sfo without paying the required permit fees and without the permission from the airport. told several of those transportation network companies that they have two weeks to knock it off or they will have to be shut down. the problem is not just at sfo but received complaints about that happening here at oakland and airports in l.a. and san diego. in many instances, the citizen drivers don't have the proper signage on the side of their car, some don't even have the proper insurance. in a statement to san francisco "chronicle" uber spent time

trying to secure whatever is needed at the airports and disappointed that the upuc is not letting this process take its course. as you mentioned, kris, the california public utility commission is giving these companies two weeks to get their act together. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. >> interesting to see if we see any of the pink mustaches or any of the other vehicles at the airport today. thanks, bob. creative solution to the expensive housing rental market. a group called hip housing is putting unlikely room mates under one roof. the 72-year-old couldn't afford to live alone, but had extra space. salina can't afford to pay $2,000 for an apartment and now she has a room. it's an arrangement that more people are asking for. >> she's a beautiful, sweet lady and, like i said, she remind me so much of my family back home

temperature. it will make it feel even colder. grab your coat as we have found one gentleman out here on the golden gate bridge, there he is. he has a jacket on and he's getting quite the view this morning because that fog is still above the bridge. it's going to drop off as we head throughout the next couple hours. keep that in mind. what is happening the wind is increasing. by about 10:00, this is the view you can expect from the golden gate bridge. gorgeous conditions on the san francisco side, meanwhile, that fog kind of clinging to the marin county side and that's because we have our wind coming up from the south. pushing that fog bank up to the north. 52 degrees in santa rosa. i love weather. you probably do this time of year, as well. when we get temperature in the mid up toer 70s and don't need to apply any manufactured ac. turning windy at the coast later today. that is the only caveat right at the immediate coast, breezy to windy. as we head throughout this evening, though, nice, clear sunset and beautiful conditions. 8:32 is your sunset time.

let me talk about what's happening out there. a system to our north and bring in bouts of drizzle from time to time as we head throughout the next couple days. storm system this time of year, highly unusual and that's also bringing in the cooler weather. now, as we head throughout the next couple days. this is it. all uphill from here and temperatures will climb. 74, enjoy it for today and just 60 degrees today in san francisco and still not too bad. we will see temperatures back to the 80s right here in the south bay for saturday and father's day and then when we meet back here, monday nice and then that heat cranks atuesday through thursday and notice that here on the bottom of your screen. let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. >> through the haze you can barely make it out and can't see the lights and watch the pattern. jammed up here and then just past the lights it's clear. that's what you see the bay bridge toll plaza has the backup we saw before and now the fastrak lanes moving slower as folks are stacked up and the

lanes off to the left approach a little easier. there's your pattern and it's already 6:20 now or 6:19 and we have just now seen the metering lights. the bay bridge moving slowly and a little slower, i should say. not slowly. that is presidentant fleasant f berkeley to emeryville commute. a little slower through concord and, of course, through antioch and westbound for 580, that's gentle. a nice drive through the interchange and nothing dramatic, speeds in the upper 50s and great flow of traffic there. transit ten-minute delay recovering and probably much less than that. earlier equipment problems there. in the south bay, your northbound 101 commute starting to slow again for your morning commute and kick in for 87 and 85 over the next few. southbound 101 at capital expressway, there is a crash a fender bender moved tohe shoulder and no big issue there and along the peninsula there, your speed sensors and live look

emeryville and what is going on for fremont and hayward, coming up. a trip to the east as we look at the opening bell on the nyse today. it is thursday, june 12th. this is "today in the bay." good thursday morning to you, i'm kris sanchez. good thursday morning to >ou, i'm kris sanchez. the trying to prtrack down a person who broke into a church and killed a priest. they got a call just after 9:00 last night when officers arrived they found a priest shot to death. the second priest was also attacked and in critical condition. one of the victim's cars that was reported stolen was found nearby. so far, no arrests have been made. new details this morning about the teenage gunman accused of killing one student and injuring a teacher at a school in oregon.

nbc miguel joins us live in oregon and we understand that the gunman carried the guns and the ammunition on to campus in a plain duffel bag. >> yeah, kris, good morning. police say the suspect arrived here on campus and blended in, looked like any other student. as you mentioned, carrying a duffel bag which many students do, as well as a guitar case. he had his weapons stashed inside. he was armed with a rifle, a sem semi-automatic handgun and a vest that was able to carry hundreds of rounds of ammunition and walked into school in the gymnasium and began to open fire. as you know, a 14-year-old freshman was shot and killed and a pe teacher was shot and wounded before the suspect got into a gun battle with police and then killed himself inside a bathroom here. this morning police have no motive for this shooting. they have many questions. the suspect's family is said to be in complete shock. they have an older son who served in the military and has

74 degrees. we're getting enough of that onshore flow here this morning to keep our sky a little bit on the overcast side, but keep our temperature down all day long and get that nice, ocean breeze, as well. if you want to open up the windows, the air will get moving in your house courtesy of the wind we have in store for you today. little bit of a foggy breeze this morning for you in san francisco and good-looking drive we'll check on the particulars with mike and already tracking a few things on your thursday. 74 degrees in the south bay and what a gorgeous day and almost uniform temperatures today because of that cool, ocean air pumping in all day long. some showers up in the pacific northwest courtesy of the system bringing our temperatures down. we are expecting a little drizzle this morning and tomorrow, as well. even on saturday morning, and we're still going to see a nice, warm finish. here is a preview of your father's day weekend. 81 degrees, that's it. south bay, 69 in san francisco. and then we heat you up, significantly. we'll talk about that coming up right now.

here's mike and your drive. >> we'll take folks out because we had a late start. as far as the metering lights go but the volume of traffic didn't wait for that. we have a backup here at the toll plaza at least the incline is moving much more smoothly and slow off the berkeley curve and for westbound 80. let's get out to the maps and show you a smoother drive for the big stretch of red there. that's where the sensors a little bit distracting. the rest of your east bay very easy drive and no problems off the carquinez or benicia bridges and typical pattern smooth once you get out of novato. a smoother drive north and southbound approaching an earlier issue at marina boulevard and that debris in lanes and that is clearing and should recover and approaching tennyson a little distraction overhead. a video from our chopper overhead. this is the tennyson overcrossing on the northbound side. chp vehicle and what you can kind of see there is the fencing was taken out.

a car went into the fencing and knocked it out and it was hanging over the roadway and that's where they still have the tennyson overcrossing and the crew will have to repair that fence and the person that hit that is okay and the car stayed on that overcrossing and pulled that from the area and, again, safely removed from the area. back to the moop maps smoother through the area and off of 880 in fremont. south 680 showing a little slowing through sunol and through livermore this is good for the tri-valley and no problems there. northbound the direction through the south bay and 87, 101 and 85 with a little start and later start and towards 7:00 we'll see the northbound build up that volume. >> all right, thank you very much. well, good news for the family of mcmath, they will get her wish. her uncle says mcmath will give the girl an honorary eighth grade duploma.

they will present the diploma to a family member during graduation tomorrow. she was an eighth grader at the school when she underwent tonsil surgery back in december. she suffered complications during recovery and eventually declared brain dead by doctors. her family went to court to keep her on life support and now receiving care at an unspecified facility. the giants trying to stop a three-game losing streak and amy g. has the black and orange update. and take a live look outside at&t park. little cool start to our day, but it's 12:45 game start today. should be a nice one.

and we begin with an update to breaking news this morning. police officers have a san francisco neighborhood surrounded as they try to coax the suspect out of a home. two children could also be inside. s.w.a.t teams are out at the intersection of ward and girard right next to highway 101. no one is being allowed near that area. lucero benitez joins us live from the scene. what are you hearing so far? >> good morning, laura. residents in this neighborhood in san francisco are waking up to a lot of police activity happening as the standoff unfolds here in the 100 block of ward street. we just spoke to a sergeant who said two children inside the home, ages 11 and 14. they have not confirmed whether or not they're inside the home, but they believe the man is armed and they are hoping there is a peaceful ending to this

standoff. the man does have a criminal, a violent history and that's the reason why the sergeant believes that the men could be armed and also involved in an incident last night in which there was a domestic violence dispute and the sergeant told us what that entails. >> the first incident occurred on the 400 block of london street. that incident was a domestic violence call. during that incident, there was a report of gunfire. there was evidence of gunfire at the scene and there are witnesses to corroborate the gunfire. >> this man is believed to be in his 30s. he's still barricaded inside the home. police are also being assisted by different, by the hostage negotiation team and also the s.w.a.t team. the red cros did arrive here just moments ago. they're assisting four adults

and an infant who were not able to get back inside their home because of this standoff that is happening. police tell us this may be going on for a few hours. they're hoping that it will have a peaceful ending and that the man will surrender. live in san francisco, lucero benitez. because our wind direction is out of the south. so, what's going to happen is that fog bank is going to end up on the marin county side of the golden gate bridge as we head throughout the day today. i love when i show you what is going to happen courtesy of our wind direction. plays a big role in our microclimate forecast. for today, this is what we're expecting. foggy breeze and you can still make out both towers and that fog is settling in and clear quickly as that wind intensifies as we head throughout the day today. we're looking towards a really cool day. it's going to be nice and clear out there. but, yeah, really cool outside. just sunshine in san francisco is what i want to call it. giants first pitch forecast, they have a day game. at&t park, it's going to be cold and windy out there. here's the thing, if you can get out there, the wind direction is going to be out of the west, 15 to 20 miles per hour. that is strong for at&t park. they could potentially get picked up and carried out to

controversial comments during his visit to the bay area. he's drawing attention for remarks he made while addressing the commonwealth club in san francisco last night. stephanie chuang joins us live. nothing to do with tech companies from california but something else that is near and dear to san francisco. >> good morning to you. we're outside the headquarters of the commonwealth club of california on market street which set up the event and the governor not getting the most attention from energy independence or economics, but from topic of homosexuality comparing it to alcoholism. homosexuality came up as a topic at the texas republican party convention last week and at the time the party adopted a platform that would give people access to reparative therapy and that's intended to change someone's sexual orientation from gay to straight. last night the governor reportedly said he didn't know if the therapy actually worked. he did tweet a picture of his

talk in front of last night's crowd and next to him the interviewer had asked him according to "the chronicle" if perry believes homosexuality is a disorder. the texas governor replied whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle you have the ability not to do that. i may have the genetic coding to be an alcoholic but i -- he delivered his usual message while he's been here in california trying to convince tech companies to move to the lone star state. he's done that before. we have video of him driving around in a tesla "the only way to make the car faster is to make it in texas." a lot of different messages. as for the reparative therapy issue, the texas republican party stand would not fly here in california where it's already illegal to allow minor to reparative therapy. we have reached out to the governor's office and it is early, if we hear back, we'll,

of course, update you. find the latest on nbcbayarea.com. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang. happening today, protesters will be at stanford to let the school's administration know that they're upset a student accused of sexual assault is not being expelled. after five-month investigation the school decided the student is not a threat to campus and will allow him to finish his senior year. the school administrators will withhold his degree for two years and until then not enroll in grad school. the alleged victim says stanford is dragging its feet. >> he's walking away from his undergraduate career with almost a complete lack of consequence for forcibly raping another student. >> over the last week, hundreds of students rallied behind francis. they're demanding better services for sexual assault victims and mandatory expulsion for sex assault attackers. firefighters spent the night camped out in livermore trying to make sure a stubborn brush

fire did not flare up, again. a fire burned near florence road in a creek bed near a housing development. it started just before 8:00 and has since burned four acres. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started in the first place. safety officials in cupertino are putting together a plan to protect the city from a flood triggered by an earthquake. they say an earthquake could easily cause the stevens creek reservoir to fail. this weekend, volunteers will knock on 2,500 doors in the danger zone asking permission to put people's cell phone numbers into an alert system. this map which shows what the path of destruction would look like from up in the mountains through town all the way to 280. city leaders say the plan is to send is mass text message to everyone in the alert system, if that reservoir ever fails. state regulators say ride sharing companies are not playing by the rules and only have a few days to comply or face being forced out of business. >> "today in the bay" bob redell

live at san jose maneta international airport the problem stems from dropoffs and pi pickups at the airport. >> you must have permission from that airport, kris and laura and this is followed by conventional taxi and limo services but as you might recall as our investigative unit reported last week, these mobile on-demand companies are skirting these regulations, picking up and dropping off fares at sfo without paying the required permit fees and without permission from that airport. now the california public utilities commission has told several transportation companies that they have two weeks to knock it off or share shut down. not just at sfo but the cpuc received complaints about this happened at oakland and in airports in l.a. and san diego. in many instances the citizen drivers don't have the proper signage on the side of their

car, also required. some don't even have the proper insurance. now in a statement to the san francisco chronicle uber tried to secure whatever is needed at the airports and disappointed that they're not letting this process take its course. the state giving ride-sharing companies two weeks to comply. reporting live here in san francis francisco, bob redell "today in the bay." a south bay developer said it has come up with a plan for the historic domed theater. a company called federal realty has a lease that allows it to develop the area around the dome century 21 movie theater. the company says the plan would preserve the building on winchester boulevard right across from santana row. however, federal realty would not go into detail. earlier this week, you might remember the city council designated the theater as a city landmark. it is the day soccer fans worldwide have been waiting for for the past four years.
