spent there, all that was lost there the white house once again is being asked to intervene. we will go live to jim miklazewski in a moment. let's go to richard engel, who has made his way into northern iraq this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, this very aggressive militant group is continuing its offensive. so far the iraqi government seems powerless to stop it. the prime minister is calling us average citizens to take up arms to try and recapture their citizens him he is also asking the united states to intervene with aircraft, with drones, intelligence, whatever is necessary. . the iraqi government is losing control of large parts of northern and central iraq. some iraqi security forces are fighting, plus most appear to be stripping off their uniforms in the streets, abandoning vehicles and weapons.

they're retreating from islamic extremist, an offshoot of al qaeda, then overnight advanced much further, occupying large parts of tikrit. civilians are fleeing the area. officials say up to 5 hum,000 displaced already. the u.s. not a decades long war, costing a trillion dollars for this not to happen. many of the radicals are the same ensurjens u.s. troops battled for years. they are now aligned with militants from syria, creating a single front. their leader was once hailed by american forces, some say he's the really aer to osama bin laden. the u.s. has a $10 million boundtie for him. the u.s. invasion toppled saddam

hussein, ushering in a shiite regime. they hate the shiite government. there are no u.s. troops around anymore to stop them. this militant movement, savannah, is not just a problem for syria an iraqi. many of the fighters are very anti-american. there are thousands operating now openly between syria an here in northern iraq. >> richard, in fact, this is something you and i talked about weeks ago. now i am hearing experts say the same thing, this region, the islamic militants in iraq is more dangerous tan pre-9/11 afghanistan. >> reporter: that should be a warning for many. afghanistan was where the 49/11 attacks were hatched. the open battlefront between iraq and syria is the new breeding ground where the new

bin ladin's are being born. there are about 10,000 foreign fighters who could come into europe and perhaps make their way into the united states. most security officials and definitely military officials are now acutely focused on the region and what is happening right now with the iraqi government and with this movement, which is called ifif, the islamic state in iraq and syria. >> richard engel in northern iraq for us this morning. thank you very much. we want to bring in jim miklazewski at the pentagon. the iraqi government wants to consider intervening with air support against these militants. what is the talk at the pentagon and do you think the administration has any appetite for this? >> you know, matt, there is a real possibly that the u.s. could somehow be drawn back into a war in iraq. but so far, the president has not made that decision according to officials we are talking to. the iraqi government asked them

to fly combat messages with armed drones over those militant emcampments. but so far the white house has said. an official said we're not going to iraqi any time soon. it remains under consideration, richard mentioned the real fear here is that these militants will turn iraq into a safe haven against western targets, including the u.s. i said this is going to be a tough call for the president. he campaigned on ending the war in iraq. he pulled all forces out of iraq nearly le years ago. so to send american forces back into iraq would be a very tough decision for him to make and perhaps a hard one for americans to accept, matt. >> thank you very much. closer to home, we move to the track school shooting in oregon. the gunman has been identified as 15-year-old jared michael pageant.

police were saying he was so heavily ampld many more lives could have been lost. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, investigators tell us the gunman looked like any other student, he used a duffle bag to conceal his weapons. he walked behind the school and into the gymnasium and shot to kill. when he arrived, officers engaged the suspect in a gun battle. detectives say 15-year-old jared michael pageant was armed would be an ar-15 rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. >> the shooter also had a large knife. he was wearing a non-ballistic vest. he was also wearing a multi-sport helmet with a cam san design. >> police say he appeared ready for war, when he shot and killed 14-year-old emilio hoffman for no apparent reason.

the appreciate nan victim who exselled at science and victory, he was a stand out soccer player. his family saying be happy like emilio, smile like him, laugh leak him. >> we always cracked jokes to make him sfooil smile. i think that's what he was leak. i feel horrible he had to go. >> reporter: a p.e. teacher was grazed during the gunfire, many called him a hero, he ordered the school lock june seconds after police say pageant fired his first shot and before he took his own life. >> i said high to him. he gestured. didn't want to say anything. >> reporter: destiny henry saw the alleged gunman, her friend, minutes before the shooting. >> for all those people that think he's a huge monster and like he's really not. >> reporter: with for the mote i for the bloodshed, this morning, police have few answerings. all that's left on this campus is heart breaking.

>> the suspect's neighbor tells nbc news the family is in shock him they say they have an older son who served in afghanistan and with the military. they say he, too, was in disbelief t. suspect got the guns from home. >> thank you very much. there is new fallout this morning from house majority leader eric cantor's stunning primary defeat. he says he'll now step down from his leadership post as debate r. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. matt. the political shock waves are still being felt across virginia's seventh district and here on this college campus where a little known professor new to politics with the help of his 23-year-old company manager toppled eric cantor, who by many in this community didn't spend enough time paying attention to the home district t. fallout means house republicans will be choosing a few leadership team next week.

facing the cameras with an uncomfortable task, eric cantor kicked off a summer shakeup for the house republican party. >> while i will not be on the ballot in to have, i will be a champion for conservatives across the nation two are dedicated to preserving liberty and providing opportunities. >> reporter: while cantor will stay in congress until january, he will give up next month his majority leader, a role that made him powerful nationally and it turns out vulnerable back home. >> he is a leader, sitting down with the president, trying to work things out at a time when people want to stand up to the president. i think it came -- >> '04 n.

information about that shooting in las vegas. >> we are learning more about that deadly shooting free spree in las vegas and the couple behind it. investigators have released a chilling new video showing the last moments of the rampage. >> reporter: the shock over the murders of officer alyn beck and soldo will never be sold completely for their families, beck, a husband, father of three and a brother. >> the best brother i think a person could have. >> i wish he was here to tell me what to do. >> there is beck another other family, his brothers and sisters on the force. >> al loved being a police officer. he loved doing the work. >> reporter: meanwhile, police released this snippet of wal-mart under surveillance video, suspect amanda miller aiming and seeming to fire her handgun at husband jared who is lying on his stomach, to explain why the police first said she shot him before killing herself. the autopsy proved otherwise. >> as a man was shot, in fact,

by police gunfire, just prior to prior to this incident. >> reporter: more important then how the suspects died is why they became killers in the first place. it turns out police had three contacts with the couple prior to last sunday. one last february over comments jared allegedly made when his driver's license was suspended. >> if they come to arrest me for non-compliance or whatever, i'm just going to start shooting people. >> miller denied using those words t. case was closed. the task now, to learn why two young people who shared an anti-government anythinger with so many others ended here. >> one priest is dead, another seriously injured in a shooting on wednesday fight. it happened in phoenix. officers discovered the two victims within they responded to reports of a burglary. a 26-year-old priest died of a gunshot wound t. other remains in critical condition. police say they don't have a motive for the vooim crime or any suspects. defense secretary chuck hagel says the decision to

exchange taliban leaders for army sergeant bowe bergdahl was done illegally. in testimony, hagel says the decision to make the deal was a tough call for president obama. republicans and some democrats have criticized the obama administration for not telling congress in advance. hagel says the advance had to be made quickly and any leaks would have wrecked that deal. an off duty police officer is being hailed as a hero today after a car plow noose a gas pump and bursts into flames. this happened in new york. this is all caught on camera. police say the 70-year-old driver had a diabetic emergency, that's how he lost control of his car the gas pump bursting into flames. an off duty police officer initially ran from the scene, seconds later, ran back if. he is able to pull the ebld e elderly driver out of the car in team. four cars were damaged. six people were hurt in this. it's incredible there. thanks goodness for that off duty officer. well, the new york rangers

sharing apps. they may be convenient but now some taxi drivers say they're not fair and they might be illegal. nbc's kerry sanders is in miami. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, matt. in most of the bigger cities around the world really, when you need a cab you sort of assume the stance and hail a cab. but increasingly it's getting a lot easier with your phone. you just click on a ride sharing app like this, push a button and we get a car within minutes. the question of course now is, is this legal. with the simple click of an app, a driver in a private car gets an alert and within minutes your ride arrives. >> you're my ride. >> reporter: but in many cities across the country, some regulators are saying apps like lift, u ber and side car are illegal. >> we just can't have folks coming in and just operating, just setting up shop because the

question becomes where does it stop. >> reporter: in miami last week, police confiscated and impounded some cars. maria was caught and fined. >> i got two tickets. >> reporter: for how much. >> $1,000 each one. >> reporter: so total 2,000 dollars? so you now know this is illegal? >> yes. but i hope this is going to be legalized soon. >> reporter: in her case, lift is paying the tickets. the fare up for grabs is huge. uber is the biggest of the ride sharing companies, operating in 123 cities. in wednesday onmonday, traditional taxi drivers protested. an uber spokesman say we oppose efforts by big taxi to limit customer choice. >> their rules apply to

commercial vehicles and these are personal vehicles exchanging payment in the form of a donation. >> taxi operators pay up to $1,000 for a medallion to operate in some cities. they say a taxi is an attackscy. >> it's an atrocity. >> i think the question that the consumers are asking is who are these enforcement actions service. >> reporter: well, here in miami-dade county, the county mayor says he'd like to figure out a way to make these apps legal. in houston where they're having the same debate, they're going to vote next month on whether to allow them or not. and as you know, in new york there was a loud debate before those apps went live. >> well a lot of people are banking on them being legal but didn't they value uber at $18 million. >> when you can't find a cab around here, that's what you do. happens often. >> let's get a check of the weather now from mr. roker.

they've got their heads on straight. they're strong, confident young ladies. >> they are growing up in a place i once called home. and my sister, barbara, and i gave sasha and malia a tour when their father became president. >> i met them in this very room when your wife brought them here to tour their new home and i taught them how to slide down the bannister, so you can thank me laider. >> i very much appreciate that they have not broken any bones thanks to the lessons you gave. >> i taught them the proper way, safety first in this house. >> that's right. >> and on inauguration day, 2009, the passing of the torch and words of advice from my sister, barbara and me, about the privilege of living in the white house. >> one of the things we said is to enjoy every minute. you know you're living history and i think it seems overwhelming at first. are they enjoying their life here? >> what's been great is the fact that they've been able to have a pretty normal life.

they've got great friends, sleepovers here, they go over to their friends' house to sleep over. they go to the mall blxt what i've been really proud of is the fact that they haven't gotten an attitude. they don't take this for granted. >> the main point of the letter was to ignore the polls, ignore the critics and know who their dad really is. and i know that for barbara and me, it was hard to listen to people criticize our dear dad. can they stay away from that? or do they take the criticism to heart? >> they don't really feel deeply burdened by some of the chatter in the news. because it's really not part of their lives. but i'm sure that you know, the letter you wrote, you and barbara wrote and the example you guys set sure helped them a lot. and chelsea clinton you know, had dinner with malia one time, which was really generous. and you guys are fairly

exclusive club of people who had to put up with this nonsense. and turned out to be just amazing young women. so it makes me a little more confident, optimistic about how things can turn out. >> confidence and optimism and no small part, due to fathers who above all, love their daughters. >> you guys, one thing i know that my parents wanted most of all for us is for us to have a relatively normal childhood. you can see that this is the same for this president. when we were at the white house on tuesday, sasha was turning 13, and she was surrounded by a lot of little girls with overnight bags and presents. a giant slumber party. but a fun one. so you can tell that they're really having a fun, normal childhood. and speaking of birthdays, as i said, on another birthday, a little bit of an older one around here, my grandfather is turning 90 today. so we're celebrating in a pretty unique fun way. and i'll have more of that in our next half hour. >> good, we look forward to

good morning to you, 7:56. i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to a breaking story, a man who barricaded himself inside a san francisco home is now in police custody. the man surrendered peacefully just a few minutes ago and happened at a home near ward and girard right next to highway 101. police say the suspect was wanted in connection with a domestic dispute last night where they believe he fired a gun. two children were found inside the home but they are okay. authorities will be in that area for a bit longer to wrap up that investigation. no word yet if the man will face any charges. right now, want to check the forecast and meteorologist christina loren. how is it looking out there? >> we do have some fog lingering over the golden gate bridge at this hour, but it's not going to last forever. all bet temperatures will be cool as we head throughout the next couple hours. temperatures will only hit 60

her daughter's kill anywhere a -- killer in a florida courtroom. the mother hugged the shooter jordan howe after he pleaded guilty tuesday to manslaughter. he admitted shooting her daughter, lourdes, two years ago, when he brought a gun to school and it went off accidentally. under his plea deal, jordan will serve one year in a youth detention camp. and then speak at schools about the dangers of guns. olympic swimming great, amy van dyke will be transferred to a hospital in denver next week to begin rehabilitation she could face a second round of surgery in scottsdale, arizona where she has been treated since an atv accident on friday. doctors say they don't know yet if she will be paralyzed. she tweeted well-wishers on thursday. the coast guard says a kayaker who tried to paddle 2400 miles from california to hawaii is lucky to be alive. the 57-year-old man was just 11 days into his journey when he radioed for help on tuesday.

as we mentioned, big day in kennebunkport, maine, president george herbert walker bush is turning 90. so let's go back to his granddaughter, jenna bush hager warks big announcement. i guess we couldn't expect him to sit around eating cake all day. how is your grandfather planning to celebrate? >> he's planning like a lot of 90-year-olds do. he just tweeted that it's a wonderful day in maine, in fact, nice enough for a parachute jump. yes, my grandfather is going to sky-dive once again for his 90th birthday, which is pretty unbelievable. he told me this at his 88th and we all thought the plan was a bit ambitious. but we're all thrilled, even my grandmother, that he's following through with that plan today. >> so you did a jump at 80. 85. >> i've had several of them since the war. >> you think you're done with sky-diving? >> no, i got one more left in

me. june 12th, 2014. and it will be fun. >> and so today, my 90 years young grandfather will once again celebrate his birthday at 10,000 feet. with retired members of the u.s. army's golden knights. at this point it has become a time-honored birthday tradition. on his 80th birthday he jumped in texas. on his 85th, kennebunkport. my grandfather's passion for sky-diving comes from a moment that changed him forever. as a 20-year-old fighter pilot, one of the youngest in world war ii, his plane was shot down over the pacific. his only option? parachute into the open water. amazingly, he suffered only minor injuries. and was rescued by an american submarine. seven decades later, that one day remain as vivid memory. >> and you were so young, were

you scared? >> well you felt being scared sometimes. not all the time. certainly when i was coming down in the parachute, i was scared. and i was scared when i was in the water swimming. get away from the japanese island, i was scared. >> that experience actually sparked your love of sky-diving. >> i think so and i did it wrong. i pulled the rip cord too early, hit the tail of the plane with my head, just a glancing blow. and that, i decided that later on, well i want to do it right. and so that did spark my interest in making another jump. this time getting it correct. >> there are other men on the plane who didn't -- >> two that were killed. >> and you still think about those men? >> a lot. i think about them all the time. what could i have done different to save their lives. and then on the kind of a -- theoretical, why me? why was my life spared. >> do you feel like you used that second shot at life to the best? >> well i'm sure i could have

done a lot of things better, but it's been a fulfilling time in my life and a lot of experiences and including being president of the united states. >> not too shabby. >> not too shabby. it was an interesting time, i enjoyed it all, enjoyed life. >> a life he cherishes to this day and despite a health scare and hospitalization over the past year, he remains set to fulfill that promise of one more jump. surrounded by those who love him most. >> jenna, i know you're awfully proud of your granddad. i want you to know while we're watching that, some people on the set are going -- that guy's a stud. no question about it. are you going to be there when he jumps? >> i'm going to be there when he jumps, although i'm a 32-year-old wimp and he's a 90-year-old stud. as you just said. i'm not jumping. he's going to jump and we're all going to be watching and cheering him on. the one thing that we're a little bit worried about, as you

mom comments that are offensive, sometimes you'll run into an elitist group of playground moms. >> dads are not babysitters, we're parents. just like moms are. >> it shouldn't matter whether it's the mom raising or the dad raising, you know, we're all in this together. >> reporter: but for chris, mike, frank and pat, they say the rewards of staying at home far outweigh the sacrifices any day, any time. >> it makes me super proud to be doing this. having the time that i can to spend with my son is paramount, it's something i love. i relish the opportunity to spend this time with my children that i wouldn't necessarily have if i pursued my career. >> i'm proud of my wife for being able to give me this opportunity. you know. i could never take it back. can i have a hug. thank you. >> two million, two million stay at home dads today, matt lauer, that's roughly double the number

how you get the stoic voice in studio? >> it was weird to try to get the sense, how big it was compared to the body. because a force was like this, you don't need to go there. then you finally get a feeling. because when he talks, he's always talking to a lot of people. and making speeches. but it's even more funny to kind of just be more quiet with his son. struggling. >> you know there are these quiet moments in the film. it's obviously a technological feat, it's beautiful to look at. but it's a great story. we meet hiccup's mother. >> absolutely. it's a surprisingly emotionally complex movie. it's exhilarating and it takes animation to a whole new level. but you know, the story itself is, is fun, but it's very moving and emotional as well. and i think there's a lot for, depending where you're at, kid, there's a lot to take out of the movie. >> the reviews have been great. i was reading up about you,

of meat. but my advice is grass-fed. if you can purchase grass-fed, good saturated fat. >> you're going to make a simple one to begin with. this doesn't take very long. >> i'm going to cook one of my favorite-ever cuts, it's the ribeye. everyone has got their own favorite. what's yours? >> i like ribeye, porterhouse, anything. >> you're in the right house today. >> perfect. >> a little bit of oil. you can use olive oil, extra virgin olive oil. i use a bit of coconut oil. >> one of the reasons you're using it, it allows the spice to adhere to the steak. >> that's right. we're going to get into the spices. do you feel like doing a little bit of manual labor? mortar and pestle, salt, peppercorns, the easiest spice mix in the world and it's delicious, rosemary and chili. >> do some grinding there. >> i've done that and i've done that well, it's going to come out looking like that. >> that's what it looks like. we grab some of that. we sprink it will over the

steak. then we put quite a bit on. we want that flavor. then we pick it up. pop it on to the grill. and that's what we want. >> repeat on the other side? >> a bit more on the other side. >> how long would you cook a ribeye like that in. >> that's a gorgeous ribeye, mate, that's going to take probably five minutes on each side. maybe even six to seven and then we're going to rest it. >> that's important. >> you rest it for half the amount of the cooking time if we cook it for ten minutes, then we rest it for five before we even think about slicing it. now to slice it, if you want to, you can pop it back on the grill to give it a little more heat, sort of just kiss it before you serve it and to slice it, you go against the grain. so look at that ribeye. >> that's beautiful. i'm going to steal a piece of that. >> before you do that -- >> drizzle with some lemon? >> lemon or acid with meat, it might sound counterproductive or counterintuitive.

but it's gorgeous. >> a little more complicated. a little more elaborate sauce with mushrooms. what cut of meat? >> sirloin. it's again, you can't go wrong -- >> this is unbelievable. good. >> he loves my food. so sirloin, cook it on either side. probably four to five minutes again on this, let it rest. pop it on the plate. my favorite, accompaniment with steak has to be mushrooms. >> what kind of mushrooms? >> field mushrooms or portabella or swiss. you can't go wrong. a little coconut oil, olive oil, good herbs, garlic and spoon some of that on to the steak. >> you serve it with some greens? >> we always serve with greens, mate. i follow a paleo diet, good quality meat. make sure the animals had a natural diet, good health, and lots of vegetables, you can't go wrong with beautiful fresh

and then he got -- >> ran back in to save the elderly man who apparently had a medical crisis. four cars were damaged. six people were hurt. the 70-year-old had a diabetic emergency, lost control of the car. can you imagine, can you imagine? of course you can't. he's standing there, pumping gas -- the accident happens and he saves this guy's life. >> the impact. four cars all smashed together like that. >> crazy. >> everyone is okay. but that's frightening. this is a piece of video i can't believe, this is home video from a recent swamp to your in louisiana. this is not a controlled setting, a tour guide in the water with two alligators, jumps in in the wild. feeding them chicken and marshmallows from his mouth. >> that is -- oh. >> wow. >> this is not against state law to feed alligators in louisiana but it is against the local law in that parish. >> i don't care, if it's against the all.

good thursday morning to you. i'm kris sanchez. it is 9:26. protesters plan to head to stanford today to let the school's administration know they are not happy that a student accused of sexual assault is not being expelled. after a five-month investigation, the school decided the student is not a threat to campus safety and will allow him to finish his senior year. the school administrators will withhold his degree for two years and until then, he cannot enroll in grad school at sanford, where he's already been accepted. the alleged victim says stanford is dragging its feet. >> he's walking away from his undergraduate career with almost a complete lack of consequence for forcibly raping another student. >> over the last week, hundreds of students rallied behind

what are the warning signs? what can you do about it? what should you look for on food label, madeline fernstrom is here. accord together cdc, food allergies among children increase approximately 50% over 15 years. we were talking about this, willie and i. when i was growing up, i don't remember kids having food ale r allergies why are we seeing this in. >> nobody knows for sure. if you look at allergies in general, it seems like we have a problem in developied countries in developing countries, allergies are unheard of some people think it's because we're too clean. we have clean sanitation and water. perhaps that keeps our immune system bored. it does weird things like create allergies. >> it has happened so quickly. there are kids in my children's

school who have allergies, you can't bring in anything for birthdays. we totally respect that, it's a terrible problem to have. where does this come from? >> besides the hygiene hypothesis, something that makes a lot of sense is parents are so afraid, they with hold these high allergen foods thinking i'll protect my child. and your system can get bored, you should stimulate it and also our food supply is changing. another school of thought is maybe that's happening. what remains is, the big eight you know of food allergens. and that's peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish, and then it's wheat, milk, eggs and soy. >> let's talk about warning signs, dr. payne. is it usually an immediate reaction to food? >> it can be variable. it can be within minutes of eating food. it can be delayed. typical systems could be itching of the mouth and throat, breaking out in rash, hives,

swelling of the skin. stomach aches, nausea and vomiting and in severe reactions, trouble breathing, throat closing up and passing out. >> in some cases all some people have to do is come in contact with the food. you don't have to ingest it. >> you become victim to it not just by eating the food, but it can become aaronborne. remember it's an immune response, you can ingest it, inhale it. you might be near an airplane seat or table which is the reason why people think these people are getting two severe. they want to have everything wiped down, no access to things this can happen, if you have a severe allergy, where just a tiny amount of this gets a huge response, this can happen readily. >> really important to read ingredients on the food labels? >> it's surprising to some people that a lot of this is not mandatory for the big eight it is mandatory. you'll see the labels, contains nuts, contains milk. >> or made in a factory that -- >> with some of these are voluntary. which is great for companies to do. but you have to be very careful,

it says may contain nuts, may in a facility made with milk. these are the things you have to be more careful about. and if your child has a severe allergy, you probably should stay away. >> show us how to use the epi-pen and when parents should think about using it on themself or your child. >> if you're away interest medical help, readily available, you use this, okay. but absolutely, if anyone has trouble breathing, you throat is closing up, your tongue is swelling up, look like they're going to pass out, you would want to use this. this is a traditional epi-pen, you take the cap off, hold it firmly in your hand, aim for the upper thigh where there's a lot of muscle and jab hard. you hold it there for ten seconds, when you're done, you have to call 911 and get to an emergency room. >> great information, thank you so much. for more information on food allergies, head to our website, ♪ ♪

biological dad. >> this is a certificate from the hospital where i was born at. >> at 6 years old, barb's parents revealed they adopted her as an infant and were biologically her aunts and uncles. >> i was told at that point because my adoptive parents were adopting another child which was my adopted brother. my life was really good. i had a very good childhood. >> did you feel something was missing? >> it was something on the back burner emotionally. i did always kind of wonder who they were or even if they knew about me. >> as her kids grew older, barb started looking for her biological family off and on. she had old photos of her dad and knew he had two other children. >> here is your natural grandfather when he was in the navy. >> had little bits and pieces. >> i did. like a puzzle that really needed -- >> put together. >> exactly. >> one night she began searching on facebook and found josephine herman, her natural father's second wife. >> was that the moment you

realized, oh, my gosh. >> i was, like, oh, my goodness. >> barb sent her a short message and by clicking through josephine's page, she discovered her half brother and half sister. a couple of days later they wrote back. >> i just cried. it was something i wanted for so long. >> new family members flooded barb's page with friend requests and messages. >> i did kind of keep a flow chart of everybody. >> you had to find out who are you and who do you belong to? >> exactly. who are you again? >> one person who didn't have facebook is her dad fred she mustered up enough courage to give him a call. >> he said, you sound like your mother. >> sunday will be fred's first father's day with barb, a day that is 50 years in the making. >> i feel so grateful. i have two families. so it will be really nice. >> wow. >> and she's with us. >> hi, barb. >> these last few months must have been something. you have spoken to him on the phone, but you haven't actually

seen him. >> no, i haven't seen him. >> how do you imagine him to be in your relationship? >> i heard he's a great dad. and a great grandfather. so, you know -- >> had to be such a difficult decision for him. but you did he did it out of lo you. >> that was my mother's wish. we got separated along the way. >> you always felt like something was not quite there, something wasn't right. >> yeah, especially after my adoptive dad died. i missed him so much. i thought it would be such a shame to lose these other people that are still alive that are part of my family. >> i don't think we should wait any longer. >> she waited 50 years. >> we have your dad fred here with us. fred, come on out. >> how are you?

our attic, but it was always clear he didn't want to talk about it. through writing this book, what a great time to do it. he said, i don't think so. i don't want to get into it. and popped into my e-mail box, this full beautiful chapter and he remembered everything. the guys and the roads and the villages. that's one piece, you think you know your parents so well, one piece of his life i knew nothing about and now i do. >> you never wanted to talk about it? >> no, i just -- i'm big on denial when it works. yeah. >> what did you hear back from people that are responding to the book? >> it is funny. everyone is relating to this book. we thought we were sort of strained for not having had these big talks. and we're hearing, you know what, i never had that sex talk with my mom. somehow we fumbled our way around and we find our way, and i think people are saying, parenting isn't that easy, you know? you make it up as you go sometimes. we're getting not just fathers and sons but mothers and
