good morning. coming up on "early today"," breaking overnight, sergeant bowe bergdahl is back on u.s. soil. his care continues and so does the investigation. terror front. with iraq falling to jihadists, president obama threatens military strikes, but no boots on the ground. immigration emergency. waves of children pour over the u.s. border at alarming rates. plus, the heat are outhustled and outplayed by the spurs. it's friday, june 13th. "early today" starts right now. and good morning. i'm richard lui. we begin with breaking news. 28-year-old army sergeant bowe bergdahl is back in the united states. the freed taliban prisoner of

war was flown from the u.s. military hospital in germany to the brook army medical center in san antonio, texas, where we find nbc's jay gray. jay, good morning. are you there? you've been following the story all this morning. what is next for bergdahl? >> reporter: good morning, richard. he begins the third phrase of his reintegration as doctors call it here in san antonio. it has been a long, difficult and controversial trip back, but as you talk about the former p.o.w., he is back on american soil now. the pentagon confirms sergeant bowe bergdahl traveled overnight from landstuhl regional medical center in germany to san antonio, where he'll begin the next phase of his reintegration, rehabilitation and recovery. army doctors say bergdahl is getting better physically, but needs more time to recover emotionally and psychologically after being held for five years by the taliban as a prisoner of war. >> my name is bowe bergdahl. >> reporter: during his captivity, he reportedly spent

extended time in solitary confinement and endured repeated physical torture. as his treatment now shifts to san antonio, the firestorm of controversy over his release seems to be growing. there have been accusations by some including soldiers in bergdahl's unit that he deserted his post. then there continues to be bipartisan outrage in washington, that the administration agreed to a deal to trade five taliban prisoners being held in guantanamo bay for bergdahl's release, without consulting congress. >> the transfers went ahead with no consultation, totally not following the law. defense secretary chuck hagel defended the move during a hearing this week on capitol hill. >> the exchange needed to take place quickly, efficiently and quietly. we believe this exchange was our last best opportunity to free him. >> reporter: and now, for first time in five years, sergeant

bergdahl is back on u.s. soil. now there are reports that bergdahl's parents are in texas as well. and during a stay here that he may see and speak to them for first time since he's been freed. sergeant bergdahl expected to spend a week to ten days here at brook army medical center. that's the latest live in san antonio. i'm jay gray. no ground troops in iraq because islamic militants reportedly seized two new towns in eastern province as they go to the capital. today urging iraqis to take up arms to resist militant attacks. the humanitarian crisis grows as half a million people flee the captured pound ed town of mosu. richard engel is in northern iraq. >> reporter: some american veterans might be able to recognize their old humvees. given to the iraqi army, some

now shattered, burned, others taken over by islamic militants, a splinter group of al qaeda called isis, the islamic state in iraq and syria. they vow to march on baghdad, they're only 100 miles away. and iraqi troops who were trained by the u.s., most are putting their hands up instead of on the trigger. the goal, the militants said, to impose strict islamic sharia law, not just in iraq, but in syria and beyond. as the islamic militants advance, hundreds of thousands of iraqis are fleeing the area. families loading into cars and looking for safer territory. they said they heard gunshots near their home and had enough. what's happening to iraq, it's splitting apart. in the west, the militants are taking over and being joined by those nostalgic for saddam hussein. in the south, the u.s. supported shiite government under prime

minister maliki who excluded sunnis from power and is struggling to survive. and in the north, the kurds who longed for independence for a century are now taking it. there is also the issue of american contractors and diplomats in this country, several thousand remain here. some contractors have already been given evacuation orders, several hundred have begun evacuating from balad air base and then there is the giant u.s. embassy in baghdad. this conflict is heading toward baghdad. the city is divided. sunnis on one side, shiites on the other, and perhaps symbolically of this entire conflict the u.s. embassy is right in the middle. richard engel, nbc news, irbil, northern iraq. texas needs help. it is asking the federal government for $30 million for security to handle the hundreds of children and adults surging across the united states southern border every week. rio grande arrests this fiscal year is now double than any

other area. nbc's tracie potts is in washington, d.c. the debate now where you're at is this surge. is it the result of the president's dreamer policy? >> reporter: or the result of the lack of a policy at this point in terms of enforcement. the challenge that the administration seems to be facing is people who think they can send their kids over the border and those kids will be allowed to stay in the united states and now they have got sort of a pr campaign going on to let them know that is not the case. most of these kids are going to be sent back home. they're going to be deported. with children, the process takes a little bit longerment they try to find the family here, which means we have to house and feed and take care of them in the process. and now there are concerns about that. customs and border patrol checking out allegations from the aclu and some activist groups, ingrant groups that a quarter of the kids reported physical abuse, 100 allegations of punching, kicking, children who were raped while in u.s.

custody, strip searches, shackles, not enough food, not enough water, now those allegations are being investigated as the u.s. tries to stem the flow of the kids. 47,000 so far this year, which could go up to 90,000, that would be six times what we saw six -- just two years ago. rich sna richard? >> the coyotes making up to what could be hundreds of millions of dollars because of the situation. thank you so much there, live in washington for us. two potential presidential contenders in the headlines on same sex couples. texas governor rick perry compared homosexuality to alcoholism. the san francisco chronicle saying when asked whether he believe homosexualities with a disorder, he said in part, quote, i may have the jennegene coding i'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but i have the desire not to do that. and like at the homosexual issue the same way. and things got tense during an npr interview when hillary clinton was asked about the timing of her public support for

gay marriage. the former secretary told reporter terry gross, i did not grow up even imagining gay marriage, and i don't think you did either. burn it. that's what the owners want for that texas house teetering on a cliff. the foundation continues to crumble into the lake below. the local fire department will light it up this morning to minimize the eventual cleanup. bill karins, maybe. if the ash falls below, i don't know. i guess they want to be gone of it. >> the house fell down toward the lake, cleanup at the lake, which is expensive. either way, bad for the environment. imagine that was your home. >> i don't want to. >> pretty sad. let's talk about the west. we had rain to talk about for the first time in june. two weeks without a rain system like this. not pouring, but we have some light rain coming down through the puget sound. that should go from north to south, circulating behind the storm system. so i-5 is a wet drive from seattle to tacoma. as for as additional rainfall,

not a lot. we will see some and the showers are in the forecast for olympia down to portland today and even there in spokane. the rest of the west remains dry. we're going to cool it off with this system moving through the west. that's good for father as day weekend. forecast for today, in the 60s with clouds and showers in the northwest. california, you're looking fine in the coastal areas. trying to burn off some morning clouds early. and in the deserts, we remain on the warm side. as i mentioned, cooler temperatures for outdoor plans over the weekend. that's the n father's day weekend forecast coming up. >> speaking of which here, you're a father, got two beautiful children, what's the plan? >> we're doing brunch and then to the pool. >> i'll there be right on time.

this morning on "today," chicago mayor rahm emanuel takes on donald trump over a hard to miss sign on the new trump building. the donald is live to respond to the controversy ahead on "today." taking you to sports now, the heat getting spanked in game four of the nba finals. miami ending their streak of avoiding consecutive playoff losses. san antonio taking the lead early and did not look back.

friday the 13th. we just passed the full moon a couple of hours ago. won't happen again until 2049. today, we're looking at an okay day, much of west, same story for saturday. the rain this morning will be long gone. just a few sprinkles on saturday in seattle. same goes for father's day, not enough of rain, a little cooler. told you we'll knock the temperatures down a little bit in the desert southwest, maybe enjoy the morning or late afternoon, not during the peak of the day. many people traveling, not a lot of troublesome weather for anyone flying across the country either. looks good for dad today. >> get back for dad's day, maybe have a nice barbecue, get out to the pool. good stuff. thanks a lot, bill. now for entertainment news, almost father's day, bill was talking about.

leading the news in the arizona republic, grief, disbelief in valley after attack on two priests. one was fatally shot, another was critically injured in a roman catholic church in downtown phoenix on wednesday. authorities still do not have any suspects, solid leads or possible motives in the case. in the los angeles times, l.a. pays $215,000 to settle suit by man who wore kkk hood to meeting. michael hunt, who won the getup to protest discrimination, said city leader eer blocked his rig tanks of unknown origin rolling into ukraine. leaders claim armored vehicles from russia crossed the border and fought with troops.

good friday morning. it's 4:30. breaking news, firefighters actually on the scene this morning of a deadly mobile home fire in hayward. it is not far from mission boulevard. thats in an unincorporated part of the city. an investigator on the scene trying to figure out how that fire started and who was inside the mobile home when it went up in flames. it started about 3:00 this morning and didn't take long for firefighters to put it out. kris sanchez is there gathering information and she will bring us a live report coming up in our next half hour. a look now at your weekend forecast with christina loren. christine
