and a very good friday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. no one is freaked out on friday the 13th. a story you'll only see on "today in the bay" a popular look at the san jose family camp a year after it was damaged by that wildfire where last summer's rim fire burned more than 250,000 acres. "today in the bay's" bob redell live at the camp where workers are getting ready to welcome back campers today. a lot of people in the bay area excited about this one, bob. >> across the country and other parts of the world, good morning, laura. this camp was near ground zero, what has been billed as probably the third largest wildfire in the state of california's history, burning 257,000 acres. this area right here where we are standing was on fire. i don't know if you can see some of the charring on those trees and in this location in august

were 17 cabins that went up in flames. as you can see, they've got brand-new ones that have been put back into place and this is the job of the camp manager who has been brought on board and brought onboard in january and i'm curious what this has been like for you. trying to get this portion of the camp back open. >> well, it's been a wild ride. certainly, right into the fire, no pun intended. >> and we're back out here live and i'm looking at some of these camps, these new camp sites. these only started how long ago? >> those only started about five weeks ago for a rebuild. >> so, you've made a lot of progress. >> we've made a lot. and we still haveilatal ways to go. >> but the idea is you're going to get these going. >> we need to get these going right away. we opened today as of 1:00 a.m. >> what are people saying? >> people aren't sure what to think yet. a lot of buzz within the city

and on a lot of people old school campers who are very concerned, but my job making sure to reassure them. we're still going to have the same fun, family-filled activities this summer. >> people should realize you didn't lose the entire camp. 65 camp sites, only 14 rentable and the three more that were destroyed. you know, i look at the ridge over behind you, which we can't see right now in the light, but i can see how severe the damage was. you guys were really lucky in that respect. >> we were very lucky and also very blessed to have the cal fire and our defensible space. a lot of it starts with fire prevention. not just luck. there was a fire i believe back here in 2002 and some peripheral damage, as well. a lot about the prevention and with that, not only lucky, but thinking ahead we didn't lose

more. >> thank you very much for being up so bright and early here in the wonderful national forest where, again, san jose family camp out reopening on schedule in spite of what happened here about ten months ago and, again, they have 65 camp sites. you have that small chunk the area we're standing at right now the 17 that were destroyed and they're going to be able to accommodate the people who want to come here in time for this, what is going to be a hot summer. again, reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> nice place to be, thanks so much, bob. in the meantime the berkeley camp that was destroyed will open at another location next weekend. although only seven miles away from the family camp, burnt to the ground by that devastating rim fire. next week the camp will open at a temporary location in the sierra. family camp has invited former berkeley campers to stay at its location for a discounted rate. former dodgers owner frank mccourt will take the stand to

testify in the bryan stow civil trial. not enough security to prevent that attack in the stadium parking lot that left stow with permanent brain damage. a security expert agreed with stow's family saying staffers had had fallen short of industry standards on the night of the beating back in 2011. the expert said the men who pled guilty to beating stow should have been thrown out for rowdy behavior during the game. the man who barricaded himself inside a san francisco home causing police to tell neighbors to stay indoors is now in police custody. we first brought you this story as breaking news yesterday mornin morning. he will be charged with child endangerment and resisting arrest among other things. police went to his house near the intersection of ward and girard street right next to highway 101 yesterday. they tried to question him about a domestic violence incident

when he locked himself inside that home. fresh off his visit on jimmy fallon last night, new jersey governor chris christie is back in the bay area to show his support for republican challenger. >> he is also planning to visit facebook for a special online event. stephanie chuang joins us live from san francisco. >> i just spoke on the phone with one of the owners where the visit is set this morning and his father started selling flowers here in the '20s in the city and that's why he believes he was contacted by the governor and the candidate staff members because he owns a small, family business here. now, herald says he has been a republican supporter, but he still want to hear what he has to say about supporting small business owners. governor christie, potential

2016 presidential candidate is a moderate who just last week defeated a tea party candidate to go up against governor jerry brown. as a chairman of the association, christie has spent a lot of the last half year making stops across the country and did the same four years ago for meg whitman who was the gubernatorial candidate back in 2010. christie has ties with facebook ceo mark zuckerberg who hosted a fund-raiser last year for christie's re-election campaign and today governor christie is slated to meetith zuckerberg, again. he is hosting a live q and a session in menlo park at the facebook headquarters at 3:30 this afternoon our time where people can post questions on his facebook page for a response. as for the event here this morning it is set for 8:00. they're only expected to be here for about an hour or so and about 50 to 60 people.

lucero benitez also live at the scene this morning. any word on the suspect? >> good morning, laura. a suspect has not yet been identified and san jose police officers are still out here in the 1000 block of south 12th street combing the area for any evidence that may lead them to a suspect. the coroner also just arrived on scene. so, this area could be blocked off for a few more hours. their investigation began just after 10:00 last night when they responded to a disturbance in front of an apartment complex. >> multiple calls that there was a disturbance here in the neighborhood on the street involving upwards of ten people, had unknown weapons and they were in a physical altercation and, again, by the time the police arrived they were updated that someone had been shot. >> the victim suffered from at least one gunshot wound and although he has not yet been

identified, we're told he was between the ages of 15 and 25. police also say they did speak to several witnesses and some of them were taken to the police department for questioning, but they are still unclear on who is a witness and who was involved in the altercation. aside from interviewing neighbors and combing the area for evidence, san jose police is using every resource available to investigate homicides like this one, including new technology. still an active scene here on the south 12th street on the south side here in san jose. police are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything last night to report it to police as soon as possible. live in san jose, lucero bonits. >> thank you so much. an update now from the city of angels. embattled clippers owner donald sterling taking the fight to take his team to a whole new level. source tells associated press that sterling's legal team is hiring four private investigation firms to dig up dirt on the league's 29 other owners. the pis will also look into the

>> good morning, sam and laura. hope you get a little water there. the futures right now are pointing to slightly higher start after stocks fell sharply for a second straight day on thursday. a lot of investors watching the situation in iraq carefully and concerned about the escalating tensions there. the dow posted its first back-to-back losses in a month and could well snap its three-week losing streak. we're going to get data this morning on inflation and consumer sentiment, so, that could set the tone. the dow dropped 109 points on thursday, starting today at 16,734. the nasdaq starts at 4297 losing 34. but, guys, there is some trivia or at least the data points to the fact that when friday 13th happens and there is a full moon, trading on watt strell st fairly bullish. it happened five times since 1970 and three of the five times the market has moved higher and the last time was back in october of 2000 and it was particularly bullish for tech

that glistening, just gorgeous from emeryville this morning. that's a nice way to wake up on friday 13th. always nice to wake up on a friday, if you got that weekend off. going to be nice out there. san jose showing you the same, clear sky this morning. upper 70s today. 78 degrees in the south bay and 79 degrees for the peninsula and right around 84 degrees in the east bay and 82 degrees up in wine country. if i could get up there, that is where i would go this weekend. it is going to be nice out there. and i know next weekend hot conditions. a lot of hot weather coming our way. for this weekend, let's talk about dad a little bit. on sunday, comfortable conditions. if you want to take dad to the beach, really nice out there. great place to have a barbecue. won't be too hot. 65 degrees in san francisco and that cool breeze will be cut off, though, as we head throughout sunday and then next week hotter, drier air comes in and give you a little preview of what to expect and we'll talk a little bit more about this heat as we get into the next couple hours.

tuesday and wednesday staying nice and thursday and friday and saturday and sunday triple digits. let's talk to mike about your drive. good morning. >> interstate 880 across the bay. the bay bridge. look at that beautiful sun coming up as christina was tawing about. that's a nice view and we're talking about the traffic underneath that and that's moving nicely, as well. the east shore freeway and the maps will show you the approach out of berkeley and emeryville, no problems. little slowing eastbound 24 passing highway 13 and overnight crews still there on the eastbound commute and westbound your commute moves just fine through the area. overall, looking at that entire portion of the east bay and the peninsula in and out of san francisco and no problems here. smooth flow through the tri-valley and look at the san mateo bridge. easy, clear drive across the bay and little haze, that's typical this time of day. the lights on the peninsula, pretty clear shot. the south bay northbound has a clear drive, as well. northbound 101 and let's show you the entire south bay. where the camera was and the

what is left of a burned out mobile home trying to pinpoint what might have sparked this deadly overnight fire. happened near mission boulevard. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live at the scene with the very latest. good morning, kris. >> good morning there, laura. you can see folks here behind me, still very much an active scene because though the fire is out still smoldering and firefighters are watching for hot spots. but the real work today is to identify the man who they found deceased inside the fire and also to determine why the fire started in the first place. it did start about 3:00 this morning in what is considered unincorporated hayward within the county. the court as you mentioned is fuchsia court. flames were knocked down pretty quickly but for the person inside, it was just too late. firefighters found the man about ten feet from the front door of that single wide mobile home and it appears that he was already dead. >> at this time, we have found

one deceased victim. at this time, gender is unknown. fire is under investigation. >> now, this is a densely populated mobile home park and at one point it appeared that at least one other home appeared to be in danger because of those flames. however, the battalion chief says that the fire crews were able to save that home, no other homes are now in danger. again, they are trying to identify the man they found inside. they say he was very close to the front door. it appears that he was already dead inside. they're not saying whether he died in the fire as a result of the fire or perhaps before the fire, but then they also went on to say that investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious. alameda county sheriff investigators will man this investigation when they give us more details we will, of course, bring them to you. reporting live in hayward, kris sanchez, "today in the bay."

>> so close to getting out, thank you. the man accused of killing a daley city mother could enter a plea in court 25 years after detectives say he committed the crime. gabriel o'neil was arrested this week. he sexually assaulted and killed sheila hatcher and dumped her body in the san bruno mountains in 1989. hikers discovered the body. last year hatcher's family asked investigators to reopen the case in hopes that new high-tech equipment could help solve this mystery. >> our detectives utilizing just good investigation. the resources that we have here at the sheriff's office and, ultimately, technology, they were able to not only identify a suspect in this whole case, but place somebody under arrest. >> o'neil is also a registered sex offender, hatcher, meanwhile, was a mother of three. 5:33. for many bay area campers happiness just a short drive away, once again. about a year after it was burned by a destructive wildfire san jose family camp back open for business. >> good news to report to you.

the camp is located on the river near yosemite where last summer's rim fire burned more than 250,000 acres. and only on nbc bay area, "today in the bay" bob redell getting an exclusive look where workers welcome back campers and, bob, what activity do we find you at this morning. >> good morning, sam and laura. we have reminders of this wildfire that struck here ten months ago. right here there used to be a tree. the fire was so intense and you can see it burned down the tree through down to its roots and left the cavity of where it used to be entrenched into the land here. in the process of this burning, it took out 17 camp sites here at san jose family camp and, of course, in spite of that destruction, they were able to save most of the camp. if you look out on the ridge line out there, this fire basically horse shoed around the main area of the camp site and in the middle ground of the shot, that's where a lot of the

camp is. but on the exterior where those 17 camp sites have burned down, but you can see by the progress behind me, they're going to be open in time for the summer session and, of course, they have a lot of thanks to the manager here and took the job on in january. you had to come in, you had to get these things rebuilt. did you ever have doubt that maybe it wasn't going to happen? >> every day. but i have a pretty amazing support system through city hall, my supervisors and i have a really great team and everybody worked really hard because this is a really pressures place to a lot of people. not only volunteers and campers who have been coming here over 30 years but the people who have been working around it or with it or for it for a very long time. >> you had 65 camp sites or 17 or 14 rentables that were destroyed. we're looking at the construction here. this has only been within the past five weeks. >> only in the past five weeks we get started on the rebuild.

a lot of planning has to go into this and a lot of permission from a lot of different agencies to make sure it's done right. >> plenty of spaces for people who are coming. >> a lot of reservable space this summer. >> they're opening up today 1:00 is when the families are supposed to be arriving here. a lot of thanks to the cal fire and the fact that there are roads here that saved the majority of the camp, so, they didn't lose everything, like berkeley, unfortunately, did. they lost some, but, of course, the hard work to get this section of it reopen in time for the start of the summer season. scott or excuse me, laura, sam. >> thanks a lot, bob. looks beautiful up there, too. 5:36 right now on your friday morning. a freaky friday, i guess we'll find out if there is a full moon in friday the 13th. christina loren joins us with a look at your forecast. >> all is calm in the weather department this morning. we do have some wind out there and that will keep your

temperatures from soaring, you made it to friday and made it through pretty significant heat early on this week, as well. the reward comes in today. now, look at your temperatures this morning in the outlying valley spots. we're at 48 degrees. 48 degrees, that is down right crisp in san martin. now, let's talk about what to expect as you make your way out your front door this friday sunrise in ten minutes from now, 5:47. cooler than average and highs in the 60s and 70s for most of your inland valley spots and kind of warm out there in the tri-valley and hit the mid-80s and here in san jose right around 77 degrees. that cool ocean air will continue all evening long. these are your temperatures, really comfortable even out in the north bay today. 79 for the peninsula and the 78 degrees here in san jose with a gorgeous weekend shaping up. a preview of saturday and sunday and then we'll talk about that heat in my next report. san francisco on flag day tomorrow, 67. south bay is at 82 and father's day looking great for you and

dad this year. comfortable conditions all across the board not too hot, even if you want to do the barbecuing, the choice spot might be santa cruz. they will be at 75 degrees on sunday. let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. >> a choice barbecue, you have to get out there at 6:00 in the morning and stake out the place. you're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza where we have the cash lanes backing up. this happened over the last ten minutes, but holding steady about halfway. mid-parking lot here. fastrak a big advantage. see that on thuproach and the cash lanes backing up at the toll plaza already. no major problems through the area and look over here, that's where kris sanchez report a deadly mobile home fire and not affecting your approach to 280. the rest of your bay moves pretty smoothly south of the bridge and across the bridges, as well. a live look at 101 itself just south of 680. no problems.

a developing situation in iraq. the war-torn country is falling apart as they continue to stage a violent insurgency against government forces. tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill this morning where president obama is considering whether the u.s. military should actually come to the rescue. good morning, tracie. >> hey, laura, good morning. he called it an emergency situation, even more so this morning. we got word that those militant were only 40 miles out of baghdad, advancing on the capitol hill city after taking two other cities in the north and central part of that country. the question becomes, is this more than just a civil war,

thetthe s s shia and the kurds and the sunni. here on capitol hill some lawmakers argue that if the u.s. doesn't help stop them, these groups which hate americans could be the pipeline, as they put it, of planning the next 9/11. so, the president is trying to figure out do we or do we not participate in some sort of air assault. iraq has requested our help. no troops on the ground, but manned aircraft or drones all of that, the president says, are on the table. he's consulting with his national security team. we're waiting to get a decision. >> a lot of considerations there. thank you very much, tracie, live from washington this morning. the prospect of a civil war in iraq could cause a spike in gas prices here. crude oil jumped to a nine-month high. analysts says that could push the price of unleaded up five to ten cents a gallon in the coming days. sam? laura new this morning bowe

bergdahl back on u.s. soil. before being transported to a medical center in san antonio. jay, do we know anything about his condition? >> sam, good to talk to you this morning. he comes here to brooke army medical center for stage three of his reintegration. doctors who released him in germany for the trip here said he's doing much better physically. he is recovering in that aspect. still a lot of work to be done on the psychological, emotional side of things and that's why he's here. he can get the help that he needs. the medical team made the trip over initially and then flew back with sergeant bergdahl. they had some time to get to know him and get to know what he's going to need once he gets here. again, this is a process that

could take months and it is one that they're going to let him kind of set the pace because they don't want to push him too much and they want to make sure he's comfortable as he moves forward here. five years in captivity. a lot of that time reportedly spent in isolation in solitary confinement and also some physical abuse, some physical trauma as a result of his captivity. and, so, he's got a lot to work through and the doctors here say they understand that. >> thank you, jay, for that update. it's 5:44. we have new video to show you this morning of world cup protesters attacking a tv studio near the famous copa cabana beach. they threw stones and set flags on fire and threw trash cans into the middle of the street. one photographer was treated for a cut on his head. police made a number of arrests. protesters began marching wlil brazil's national team played croatia in the opening match. police used tear gas to scatter those crowds. many brazilians say they're

reaching for a gun. the bay area teen accused of using a stolen credit card to rent a sports car in a luxury vacation home. investigators say 19-year-old mohammed holloway rented this $240,000 sports car which was later reported stolen. he is also accused of renting a $12 million vacation home in sonoma and throwing parties with underage drinking. he faces numerous charges, including auto identity and credit card theft. a credit union in the east bay is apologizing to members after an employee accidentally sent their personal information to another member. according to the palo alto weekly sent a list oppef peopleo were preapproved for a loan. the same first name as the staff member who was meant to receive the e-mail. that list included 18,000 people's names, addresses, tax identification numbers and credit information. the credit union says it deleted the information before the member ever saw it. 5:49.

the cougar that was found in downtown mountain view was hiding behind a bush on a busy street for nine hours before he was picked up. they got that information from gps technology in the animal's collar. the cougar was just a few feet away from pedestrians and bicyclists. the tracker show the day before he was captured the cat crept across 280. scientists say he probably made a wrong turn while trying to find new territory to claim as his own. >> on the list of things you would not want to run in to in the middle of the street. maya angelou honored at her favorite church in san francisco this weekend. she asked that her memorial service be held at glide memorial church. she was a member of the church and hosted many events over the years. hosted by angelou's good friend reverend cecil williams and his wife, as well as mayor ed lee.
