calling for the obama administration to get more involved. we bring in kris sanchez. >> the fact that the u.s. is considering reaching out to iran says volumes about the volatility of the situation. now already u.s. secretary of state john kerry has reached out to known allies in the region as terrorists laid claim to another iraqi town. telefar which is 250 mimes north of baghdad and some of the towns 200,000 residents have confirmed its capture as militants took to social media to also claim a mass slaughter with pictures that are as yet unverified. they show iraqi soldiers and recruits being executed. adding to the chaos, other iraqi soldiers are abandoning their posts. volunteers are taking up arms against isis. now u.s. lawmakers on both sides

"today in the bay's" reporter joins us live at police

headquarters in the bay. officers had to track them down in southern california. >> reporter: good morning, lauren, san jose police actually made these arrests last month. it's not clear why they are just announcing them now. these are the mug shots, excuse me of the two men. they are both men from san jose. one on the left is a 17-year-old who the district attorney plans to charge on the adult. on the right, a 23-year-old. police arrested them in the cities of tracy and oakdale again last month. investigators do not believe that the man they allegedly murdered, they don't believe that they knew this man. that man was shot multiple times and killed on may 6th near the intersection of center and tolle, coincidentally blocks away from his home. he almost collided. when he got out of the car, he was shot. he left behind a wife and two

children. this story received national attention. of a lot of support for his family since his death. san jose police have helped raise more than $100,000 for the family. reporting live here at police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. security guard caught on surveillance video hitting a student in a wheelchair heads to court today. this is the video that shows the marshall mitchell knocking 17-year-old francisco martinez out of his wheelchair last month. school leaders say that mitchell was wheeling him to class when martinez resisted. investigators say that's when the security guard handcuffed martinez and hit him before dumping him on the floor. mitchell was arrest the and charged with a child abuse. also expected back in court, the san francisco man who led fbi agents on a nationwide man hunt earlier this month on thursday. a federal grand jury headed down an indictment. he's charged with an illegal

destructive device, carries a maximum sentence of ten years in priss. federal magistrate ordered him to undergo an evaluation. this morning vallejo police are offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of whoever set a school playground on fire. he has set two fires in the last month. one of them engulfed a playground that was only a couple years old. it cost about $15,000 in damage. the state budget is on its way to governor brown's desk this morning. in it, $7 million to help fund suicide nets along the golden gate bridge. we are joined live from the golden gate, it's a $76 million project? >> reporter: that's right sam, that's been in the issue. the project has been under way, the funding has been up in the air. unlike other iconic tourist destinations like the eiffel tower and the empire state building, it has no barrier. in fact the sidewalks here along the golden gate bridge are open

to the public, the railing in place right now is only four feet tall. so the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district has been building a physical suicide deterrent project. the first phase of testing had happened back in september of 2006. that was wind tunnel testing because of how dynamically long span suspension bridges respond to wind. and this morning, the winded is crazy, so you can see how important that is here. according to the "new york times," last year record 46 people committed suicide jumping off the bridge while bridge workers stopped another 118 others. and for the project again, the question is where will the bulk of the funding come from. the district's board of directors are set to the consider a funding plan for the $76 million construction faze of the net system. the good news is at least $7 million could be on the way for this project if governor brown approves this budget this friday. the meeting for the district here is set for two weeks from

news. oil is above $107 a barrel today. now economic data on manufacturing and housing. also traders are focussing on the fed. kicking off a two-day meeting tomorrow. the dow rose 41 points on friday but fell nearly 1% for the week. its worst since april. the nasdaq closing up 31 points on friday as well. target making headlines again now saying that a glitch in the checkout system is not related to security issues. customers took to social media last night to complain about delays and long lines at stores across the country after registers went down. customers in five states including new york and california tweeted that debit card payments were not working. forcing them to pay with cash. and finally it morning, starbucks offering workers help towards getting their college degree. the coffee chain is teaming up with arizona state to provide online classes from business to engineering. workers are going to get parable tuition for the first two years and full tuition for the rest of their time.

let's get to your drive this morning. couple things to tell you about. 880, issue with the tractor-trailer, hit a pole, everybody's okay, but there's a crew on the scene and we're getting onlooker delays through here. northbound through 80 at the alame alameda, extra time or take it easy, back to you right now sam and laura. it is 5:17. investors say a fire -- investigators say a fire that killed a teenager, his mother, and four other is not suspicious. it quickly spread to another. teenager and his mother who travelled from georgia were killed. the teen wanted to go to church with his grandmother on father's day to pay respects to his dad who died two years ago. the cause of that fire is under investigation. three people accused in beijing's attack last year were sentenced to death today. video broadcast by china central tv shows the suspects in court.

security cameras caught a white jeep ramming into crowds and people before it burst into flames last year at the popular tourist destination. five people died, 40 were injured. in addition to the three people sentenced to death, several others were given other sentences ranging from five years to life in prison. 5:18, former new england patriot's football player and accused murder aaron hernandez in court today. in the pretrial hearing, his facts a murder sentence for the death of odin lloyd. weapons charges and could be sentenced in life in prison if convicted. he's pleaded not guilty. >> so much media attention on that. more than a dozen people, including numerous children were rescued from a southern california lake after their boat capsized. happened in ventura county yesterday afternoon. investigators say most of the victims were wearing life jackets. at least nine children were on board, including two infants. one of the babies was in a car seat and not wearing a life

jacket. he was kept afloat by two adults. investigators sna all, about 15 people were involved and will probably will okay. the boat probably capsized because too many people were on board. retired racer michael schumacher no longer in a coma. he left a french hospital where he got hurt in a ski accident in december. schumacher's representatives say he'll continue rehabilitation, but didn't say where. he is the location successful driver in formula one history. the seven-time world champion was skiing with his son in france when he fell and hit his head on a rock. >> scary stuff. 5:19 right now on your monday morning. the bay area continues to remember the life of acclaimed poe wet and activist maya angelou. >> the public service was held in san francisco. >> pretty amazing. long time friend cecil williams

out there this morning. keep that in mind and travel cautiously. wind direction is out of the west. if you're traveling from north to south, that's where you really want top take it easy and most of the bay area highways as you know go from north to south. drive a high profile vehicle, you could get caught by a strong gust up to 45 miles per hour. hold on tight. the good news is kids, a lot of kids that the point are out for summer, and we're definitely seeing that lighter volume reflected on the highways that the point. hopefully that'll hold up, as you know, it's going to slow somewhere here in the bay area before you know it. the slowest place is the tri-valley. you want to take it a little bit easy as well up 880 northbound in san leandro. we have a crash they are clearing. watch out for that, otherwise the slow spots, westbound i-80, 44 miles per hour from grantline road to 680. southbound 680. off good-looking drive for now as you head from 580 to vargas road. slow is down guys.

what do we know? >> reporter: they are powerful even if they are not verified just yet. in the last few minutes we can tell you that john kerry said u.s. drone strikes may well be the option to stem isis advances in iraq. hours after militants release those photos to back their claim that they executed some of the iraqi soldiers trained by the u.s. the photos are not verified, but powerful. here are some of them. we will not show you the execution that they claim took place, but these are some of the soldiers and the recruits that have been taken away. there are more sensitive ones as we mentioned, but we are not going to show those to you. now other soldiers are abandoning their posts in response. and already u.s. secretary of state john kerry reached out to other allies in the region as terrorists lay claim to another iraqi town, again this morning saying that drone strikes may be the option here. tal afar about 2506 miles north

washington, d.c. with how lawmakers are weighing in on what to do next. also any time we're not on the air, visit nbcbayarea.com for the latest updates. new this morning, investigators looking through two burned homes in san francisco this morning trying to figure out what caused them to go up in flames overnight. fire started outside the front door of a second story home quickly spread to a neighboring building. excuse me, four people were evacuated. they're getting help from the red cross, a couple of people were treated for minor injuries. crews actually had to call for backup and were able to put out the flames in 20 minutes. the maps are located in the crocker amazon neighborhood of san jose near interstate 280. i'm sorry of san francisco. investigators have not figured out how the fire started. it's suspicious and still looking into the matter. this morning two people including a teenager are under arrest wanted for a recent deadly road rage shooting in the south bay. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from san jose police headquarters where

detectives, bob, tracked the suspects to the central valley. >> reporter: they do did and that's why where they made the arrests. two people arrested, one as you mention is a juvenile, but the district attorney is planning on charging him as an adult. the other man is an adult. here's mug shots of the two people we are speaking of. on the left is ortiz, and on the right daniel reyes. police arrested them in may in the central valley cities of tracy and oakdale. not clear why they're announcing them now. investigators do not believe they knew the man they murdered. . that man was shot multiple times, killed may 6th near the intersection of center and tolly here in -- tolle here in san jose. lam almost collided with the suspects. when lam got out to speak with the suspects, he was shot. he left behind a wife and two children. earlier this month, we spoke with his wife about the

shooting. >> he said, wants people to know that her husband is a good husband, good father. her husband is the only breadwinner in the family. he's the one that bring in the financial support for the entire family. >> reporter: the story received national attention as a result a lot of support for lam's family with the help of san jose police. they've been able to believe raise more than $100,000 for that family. reporting live here at san jose police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> hopefully we have the best possible resolution for them, thank you. 5:34 been investigators looking into what killed a man inside a stanford dorm. he was found near levinfield. according to the mercury news, someone called 911 when they found the man unconscious. he was declared dead at the scene. it's unclear whether he lived there or just visiting. investigators have not released

his identity and working to determine the cause of death. two people wanted for pistol whipping a man in south san francisco are on the loose we're told this morning. investigators say yesterday morning the two men walked up to a man who just parked his car on cypress avenue not far from the south san francisco caltrans station. the man told police the men were wearing masks and armed with shotguns and pistols. one of the man bashed him in the head with the butt of a handgun. knocking him out, when he came to, he was in the back seat of his car. drove himself to the hospital and he should be okay. happening now, recruits in central california placed themselves near bakersfield and a wild fire that's been burning out of control. near 500 homes were evacuated. that town is wedged between lake isabella and that fire. since it started friday, the fire burned more than 2,000 acres. it's only 10% contained this morning. its burned two buildings and threatening hundreds more.

firefighters in the bay area have been kent on their toes as well as small fires broke out across the bay area this weekend. san rafael fire department said fire conditions and dry fuel are three months ahead of normal. this fire scorched five acres yesterday. firefighters said the flames were actually heading towards homes on heatherstone drive, but cries managed to put it out quickly. that could spell trouble for summer time. 5:36 on your monday, it could. we were hearing and the fires, we've seen the windy conditions. what about the elements of dryness here? let's check in with christina loren. that's the number one question people are posing lately. how are we doing in terms of fire danger when it comes to our weather? the good news sam and laura, our ocean air is continuing to keep our hillsides nice and moist. and that will be the case, at least for the first part of the week, we're going to cut it off for a couple days but bring it back towards with the end of the week.

basically that is the story. slowly climbing through wednesday, and dropping your temps as we head through the end of the week. swind playing a factor this morning. do travel cautiously. let me show you where the fog is, but we're getting that deep, natural cooling in the marine layer this morning. really thick out thereto. that's good news. it's going to maintain for quite a while. all the way until about lunchtime. then we'll see it burn off. enough of the cooling air will keep our temperatures into the 70s for today. it's comfortable right now, we're going to stay comfortable. not at big temperature spread here between the microclimate today. 59 in san francisco and 74 in the east bay. that is knot as extreme as where we are expecting to end up. wednesday, i'll dive into that forecast coming up. right now let's dive into your drive and the great news is so far, i think people know that mike has the day off because they're driving extra cautiously out there. we have no incidents as far as crashes go across the entire bay area right now. and that is a really, really good sign. as you know we're getting closer

smoldering. at least 48 people have died. more than 25 have been injured. this happened just a few hours away from the country's board we are somalia where kenya has troops clashing with al qaeda-linked militants. over in pakistan, air strikes killed ten militants today in the southern part of the that country. it's the latest in a full scale military operation launched yesterdayed to drive militants out of the region. it was launched just days after insurgents attacked the country's biggest airport last week. pakistan's prime minister is expected to address the nation later today. militants linked to al qaeda took over another town towards baghdad. what if anything the president will plan to do, for more, let's go live to "today in the bay's" tracy potts on capitol hill this morning, what are lawmakers saying? >> reporter: well lawmakers are pushing the president to order air strikes as of this morning the pentagon says that has not

happened. two things we're waiting on today, laura. first of all, announcement from the white house, but also waiting to see if there might be some discussion between the united states and iran about getting iran involved in this. we've got a deputy secretary of state who's meeting in europe right on on a separate issue with iran. as of this morning, there could be discussion on the sidelines about whether to pull iran in and try to help them prop up iraq's government and fight against these islamic militants. new travel warning came out this morning from the state department, urging americans not to go anywhere near iraq because right now we've got soldiers and marines on the ground, not only protecting our embassy in the secure zone in baghdad, but also getting some of the state department workers out of that embassy. to other consulates in iraq. and even to jordan. there's a lot of activity going on this morning, but the big question is, is president obama going to order air strikes, there's mounting pressure from here on capitol hill for him to

do so. >> everybody's waiting, thank you very much. it is 5:43 right now. in the men time, iz laically troops force their way into a home in the west bay as they ramped up the search for three missing teenagers. neighbors say the home belongs to a family known for its ties to hamas. they are accused of kidnapping teenagers in the west bank last thursday. one is an iz laically-american citizen. the iz laically did extensive door to door searching arresting 80 palestinians overnight. russia cut supplies to yoourk this morning of gas. payment deadline passed and negotiators failed to reach a deal on gas prices and unpaid bills amid continued fighting in eastern yoourk. the decision does not immediately affect the gas flow to europe, but it could disrupt the energy supply to that region if the issue season not resolved. somber ceremony will mark the 1506th anniversary of

arlington national ceremonies today. the site was officially designated a military cemetery on june 15 at of 1864. politicians and other lead lers take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier later this morning. the state budget is on its way to governor brown's desk this morning, in it $7 million to a project that's been in the work for years. to help prevent suicides at the golden gate bridge. for more we turn to "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang who's live at the golden gate. how far would it stretch? >> reporter: good morning, sam, it would cover about 10% of the construction costs here, according to the golden gate bridge district the entire project would cost about $76 million. it seems like a small piece, but the it's very important. funding has prevented the start of the actual construction of the suicide barriers. in fact, the district board approved this project for years -- four years ago, but construction cannot begin until

funding is secured. the squawks here -- sidewalks here are hope to the public. the railing is only four feet tall. according to a bridge rail foundation dedicated to preventing suicides at the golden gate. there've been almost 1600 suicides to date, that is more than any other destination in the world. with a record 46 people dying after jumping off the bridge last year. bridge workers stopped 118 others. now this suicide barrier system would include stainless steel nets that would be 20 feet below the sidewalk. now we're talking about the budget here. other programs that could get funding if governor brown proofs it, money not sure just how much could go to city college of san francisco for the next three years. the state helping to bail out the school and help boost funding back to the levels before enrollment declined. you remember that happened after the school's accreditation status was up in the air. $264 million for the expansion of early education programs that
