good friday morning. coming up on "early today" breaking news. a shooting at one of america's greatest concert venues has cops scrambling. special advisors are headed iraq, including our military's elite special forces. is this president obama's idea of dipping america's tobacco into iraqi warfare? minnesota is in a state of emergency after record rainfall. other parts of the country brace for more flooding over the next few days. plus, americans get fired up to take on portugal at the world cup. also, the luckiest day of this rider's life caught on video. and 1,000 mentos dropped into a vat of diet coke. that and so much more. it's friday, june 20th. good morning. i'm dara brown. investigators are investigating a triple shooting that happened in a parking lot outside of the red rock amphitheater. according to sheriffs, the shooter targeted the occupants of a white suv and fled the scene after the shooting. when deputies found the suv, three victims were taken to the hospital. the amphitheater has been shut down while police search for the shooter. the incident took place after a performance by rapper naz, school boy q, and lotus. a major health scare for hundreds of america's top scientists. roughly 75 scientists working at atlanta's centers for disease control may have come into contact with anthrax. researchers apparently didn't follow safety procedures when working with the live bacteria. none of the scientist advisory shown any symptoms so far, but as a precaution, they are undergoing treatment to prevent

infection. a prime minister is facing growing calls to step down as iraqi troops struggle to stop militant attacks sweeping the country. it comes a day after president obama said he would be sending 300 military advisors to iraq. the team, including special operations forces, will target insurgents and help train iraq's security forces, but the announce am has raised questions about the truex tent of the advisor's role in rak. i'm joined by tracie potts in washington. there's mixed reaction by the president's decision to send in more troops. >> some here think it's a good start. others are willing to listen to where the president wants to go with this. others think he is not being aggressive enough. not there for combat. their goal is to help out the iraqi military. >> reporter: up to 300 military advisors are headed to iraq to help its military choose targets. not to fight. >> there's not foreshadowing a larger commitment of troops to

actually fight in iraq. that would not be effective. >> military intervention, especially if led by the wraits, only part of the response of the radicals. >> the president's decision to hold off on air strikes for now got mixed reaction on capitol hill. >> once again, he has announced step a without thinking lou the consequences of step b. >> there's the beginning of an outlying -- what i hope will be a concrete plan we can rally around. >> many of us that have been skeptical of that plan to intervene in the past will be open to listening to the president. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry heads to the middle east this weekend, including iraq to rally support. meantime, the fiercest battle continues at iraq's largest oil refinery, raising fears that this war half a world away could soon affect prices here at home. >> you will feel it at the gas pump. we will feel it in your wallet

eventually. >> reporter: we continue to watch those gas prices here, but, meantime, there are private concerns here that nuri al-maliki, the prime minister of iraq, may not be the one to bring together those factions to lead a coalition government. on the other hand, publicly the administration has said that's not for us to decide. that's a decision for the iraqi people. dara. >> thank you, tracie. there is a state of emergency in minnesota. rough weather pounding the state with record rainfall, massive flooding, and even a mudslide. it happened around 7:00 last night near the university of minnesota medical center in minneapolis. no injuries have been reported, but with so much rain continuing to fall, the potential for more mudslides is not gone yet. the governor has mobilized the national guard to cope with the wettest june on record. the presbyterian church has voted to recognize same-sex marriage. leaders of the presbyterian general assembly decided to

change language in the church constitution. now it will say the christian marriage can be the union of two people, not just a man and a william. the change has to be approved over the next year. thursday's vote marks a sweeping victory for presbyterian gay rights advocates. changing of the guard. house republicans have elected california congressman and current whip kevin mccarthy as the new majority leader. the 49-year-old defeated raul labrador for the number two position in the gop. congressman steve skalice will take over as the majority whip. meanwhile, americanss' faith in congress has slumped a new low. just 7% of americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in congress. this is down from the previous low of 10% last year. it sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but nasa's latest project is very real. the agency plans to use a giant space clock to trap a passing

asteroid and park them above the moon. for now they'll just be captured for study, but the technology has much bigger possibilities many the future. it can even be used to divert dangerous asteroids away from earth. nasa says the claw could be up and running as early as 2019. well, isn't that amazing? >> we don't even have a vehicle to get to the international space station right now, and we're planning on building a claw to grab asteroids. fascinating. >> we're going to park behind the moon. i love that part. >> if nothing else, we have very good imaginations. the weekend forecast is looking great. many areas of the west. unfortunately, the problem areas what we showed you that video from earlier, the flooding from the minneapolis. from minneapolis to sioux falls, sioux city to omaha, across to davenport. we have flood warnings for the missouri and mississippi rivers through all of those cities. we just saw too much rain too fast. a foot of rain in only two or three weeks, not many areas of the country can handle that volume of water, even in these

major rivers. it will taper off throughout the next three days. most rivers will be cresting over the upcoming weekend. we did see about one-tenth of an inch in coastal areas of northwest oregon and also in washington state. seattle we got a couple hundredths of an inch. south of medford, barely, if any, rain fell at all. we're still goose eggs pretty much where you would expect this time of year for california and into nevada. the forecast for your friday, a few sprinkles and showers out there in the cascades headed towards spokane with that weak, dying front. besides that it's looking like a partly cloudy friday. cool in the northwest, and pretty seasonable everywhere else. that's your national forecast. now here's weekend forecast right around

leading news on nbc.com. trucker in tracy morgan crash was driving 65 zone. the truck driver kevin roper was speeding at the time of the crash that critically injured actor tracy morgan. roper pled not guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and assault by auto. in the "new york times" five exonerated in central park jogger case. they'll settle suit for $40 million. the agreement would end the legal battle for the men wrongful convicted in the rape of a jogger in 1989. to some other stories we're watching. illegal sterilization of female prisoners? 17 california doctors could soon be investigated after grim allegation from a state audit. reports says at least 39 of the
