"today," friday june 20th, 2014. >> from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. raise your hand if there's some soccer in your immediate future this weekend? absolutely. and by the way, not to give anything away, i think we'll all be making a fashion statement when we watch on sunday. >> the shameless plug. the begging. that paid off. we have fall out boy here. we have a huge crowd outside for them for a concert in a few minutes. >> thank you for that, mr. roker. now to the top story. the delicate situation unfolding in minnesota where a saturated hill along the mississippi river has collapsed. this after heavy rain drenched that region. dave berggren from minneapolis has the latest on this.

dave, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. minnesota governor mark dayton has issued a state of emergency for counties dealing with massive flooding. torrential rain is the blame for the mudslide near the hospital complex. no patients were affected. this is where the 15 to 17 stories of earth gave way under a hospital. several drivers narrow rhode island escaping the slide. causing the rain soaked hills along the mississippi river thursday night to collapse under an administration building at the university of minnesota medical center. fortunately, no patients were in danger. this section of trees and hill were sent into the river. the force left 6 to 8 feet of

mud on the roadway. it comes during a dangerous season where landslides wrecked havoc. this caused a home in whitney, texas to fall into the lake. in april, this video shows cars on charles street in baltimore, maryland disappearing as the landslide works down the street. in march, a mudslide in oso, washington killed more than 40 people. back here in minnesota, as residents clean up after heavy flooding, officials are saying the hospital building is safe. it may take several days for crews to get in and remove all of the debris from the roadway. they are waiting for the ground to stabilize and for the mud to dry out in minneapolis. savannah and matt, back to you. >> dave berggren, thank you very much. another big story we're following this morning. the fbi is working with the center for disease control to

determine how 75 workers at the labs in atlanta were exposed to the dangerous anthrax bacteria. those workers, by the way, are now under close medical observation. a lot of questions about how this happened. nbc's tom costello has the story in washington. good morning. >> reporter: anthrax is best known now as an agent in bio-terrorism. while this appears to have been an accident, it's also the largest known case of exposure. the question, why were safety protocols violated in a high security lab? it happened at the nation's premiere facility that conducts research into deadly diseases and biological agents. the centers for disease control in atlanta says 75 workers at three separate labs may have been exposed to the dangerous anthrax bacteria in a high-level lab. the lab was preparing samples for researchers looking into new ways to detect anthrax. but somehow it failed to make

the bacteria inactive before releasing it to three other labs not equipped to handle anthrax. in a statement the cdc reports workers believing the samples were inactivated were not wearing adequate personal protective equipment while handling the material. at least some of the spores were then spread through the air. >> the proper way to handle anthrax is with enormous care under special laboratory containment facilities with meticulous infection control precautions. >> reporter: the first symptoms for inhaled anthrax could look like flu symptoms. sore throat, that fatigue and muscle aches. so far no one has shown any symptoms, but the exposed employees were put on antibiotics as a precaution. and other cdc staff, family members, and the general public are not at risk of exposure. and do not need to take any protective action.

>> in this incident, a risk really is very low to the exposed people and to the surrounding community. >> reporter: anthrax is deadly serious. >> good morning. anthrax in the nation's capitol -- >> reporter: in 2001, five people died and 22 others sickened after anthrax spores were sent through the mail. the fbi determined a lone government scientist was likely to blame. he later committed suicide. this morning both the cdc and the fbi say they believe this exposure in atlanta was an accident. but they are looking into why the safety protocols of the high-level lab were not followed and they say disciplinary actions could follow. >> tom costello in washington. thanks. now we want to talk about the deteriorating situation in iraq as al qaeda-inspired militants fight for control of key cities and oil facilities. the president is sending more u.s. service members to the region. he says, though, they're only there to advise. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel's in baghdad. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt.

the u.s. is getting more involved militarily in iraq again. the u.s. isn't launching another war here. u.s. troops aren't going to be on patrol. instead, these advisers, some of them already arriving, others on their way, will be working with iraqis in joint command centers including some command centers here in baghdad to try to advise the iraqi troops in their fight against islamic extremists. isis militants are still fighting, trying to take over iraq. the iraqi army, poor leadership, and defection has crumbled. so now at the request of the iraqi government, the u.s. is stepping in deploying up to 300, quote, advisers. >> we're prepared to send a small number of additional military advisers up to 300 to assess how we can best train, advise and support iraqi security forces going forward. >> reporter: make no mistake, this is american military involvement.

but it's by remote control. >> american combat troops are not going to be fighting in iraq again. >> reporter: the americans won't be kicking down doors again. the advisers will guide the iraqi military in the battle against isis helping them pick targets, advising iraqi troops how to maneuver, to re-take the half dozen cities and towns where the militants have settled in. and if iraqi fire power isn't enough, the u.s. military may lend a hand. >> we will be prepared to take targeted and precise military action if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires it. if we do, we'll consult closely with congress. >> reporter: but the u.s. isn't the only country with its hands on the wheel. iran already has military advisers here reportedly led by qassem suleimani, he's the leader iran's elite qods force. u.s special forces and intelligence generally considered the qods force to be

a hostile enemy and now the u.s. and iran will both be guiding the iraqi army. stange bedfellows brought together by a common cause. >> richard, the term we keep using and the president used yesterday, military advisers. the term you're not hearing used is special forces. is this semantics. is there a reason for that? >> reporter: they'll be special forces and some intelligence. but primarily these are military personnel who are going to be looking for targets. these are hammers looking for nails. they're going to be sitting in the operation centers. they're going to be gathering intelligence. they're going to be on the radios. they'll be calling in air strikes. initially iraqi air strikes. they will generally be trying to help the iraqis use the equipment that they already have. and the iraqi army is very well equipped. the problem is the iraqis have been mismanaging their army. they've had leadership problems. and if the american presence

isn't enough to get the iraqi army back in this fight, then as the president suggested, perhaps the u.s. might have to get more directly involved. >> richard engel in baghdad. thank you very much. natalie's here with breaking news overnight. a terrible shooting at a concert. >> that's right. in one of the country's most iconic music venues. it turned into a crime scene on thursday night. this morning, police are still searching for a gunman who shot three people in the parking lot at red rocks in colorado. officers locked down the venue after a performance by rappers nas, school boy q. and police checked every car leaving the venue making sure the gunman wasn't hiding in the vehicles. the three victims fled the scene after the shooting, but were later found miles away near downtown denver. they were taken to the hospital, but their conditions are unknown. as expected, house republicans elected california congressman kevin mccarthy as majority leader on thursday. mccarthy will take over for eric cantor who stepped down after losing his virginia primary earlier this month. louisiana representative steve scalise was elected to replace mccarthy as whip.

the changes will take effect on july 31st. a veteran seriously wounded by a grenade in afghanistan was awarded the nation's highest military honor thursday. president obama presented the medal of honor to 24-year-old marine corporal william kyle carpenter during a white house ceremony. he was injured while trying to shield a fellow marine from a grenade. >> with that singular act of courage, kyle, you not only saved your brother in arms, you displayed a heroism in the blink of an eye that will inspire for generations. >> carpenter spent more than two years in the hospital recovering from multiple injuries. since then, though, he's run a marathon, skydived, and competed in a mud run. incredible young man. now to video of a motorcyclist who cart wheels through the air during an accident but was able to walk away unhurt. take a look. this happened in clearwater,

florida. the car turns left in traffic. the motorcyclist slams right into the car. he cart wheels once into the air then again on the ground but popped right back up and walks away. he did have a few scratches but amazingly was otherwise fine. mike smith saihe purposely launched himself off the bike to avoid slamming into the car. the driver of the car was ticketed for making an improper left turn. an update this morning on the 11-year-old golf phenom stealing the headlines at the u.s. women's open. lucy li got off to a rough start at pinehurst no. 2. she was 8 over on that round. li is the youngest golfer to play in the u.s. open men's or women's. she did finish with a couple of birdies. coming up later on this morning, we'll show you how li celebrated her first day on the big stage. looking at her outfit there. it's adorable. american pride. >> taking nothing away from her incredible athletic ability,

she's the cutest golf player ever. the outfit, the braid. >> asked her why she wore it, it's the u.s. open, come on. duh. all right. well, we do have to talk about some more flooding possible for our friends in minnesota and on into iowa. let's show you what we have going on. we have flood warnings along the river here. so we're going to be watching this very closely over the next several days. because we are looking at more showers and thunderstorms. major flooding along the mississippi river and other major rivers in the area. here's why. we're going to look at this low pressure system developing. as it does, we look for those storms to start firing up and we have the risk of severe weather right in central minnesota on into the border from fargo, duluth, st. cloud, on into minneapolis. rainfall amounts 1 to 2 inches there. but as you get into the appalachians, 1 to locally 3 inches of rain from wilmington into charleston. we'll get your local forecast in

on the way out after the stunning primary defeat, cantor became the target of an attack that is ugly and unfounded, slinging the mud, brian swiser who in the national journal questioned cantor's sexuality. if you were a regular person you turned on the tv and saw him talking, i would say i'm fine with gay people but my gay radar is 60 to 70%. i couldn't care a less, i'm accepting. >> i was sort of a little bewildered. he can be a really engaging and gregarious sort of guy, but i sort of wondered what he meant because it was such a unexpected place for the conversation to go. >> but the liberal democrat and msnbc contributor wasn't done crudely saying dianne feinstein was being critical in u.s.

you're watching "today in the bay." a very good morning to you, it is 7:26 i'm laura garcia-cannon. a three-hour amber alert in the south bay has been called off. eight-year-old helena venice ya was taken from the santa clara area late last night. she was safely dropped off at the sunnyville police department three hours later. now officers are looking for her alleged kidnapper, jose valencia. no word on the connection yet. the car was abandoned in sunnyville shortly after that amberly aert was issued. investigators are looking for evidence to figure out the cause of a grass fire that destroyed two homes in the san jose foothills. neighbors say they first saw smoke coming from a vacant home yesterday afternoon. the flames quickly spread to another house and surrounding

atlanta may have been incidenceally exposed to the dangerous anthrax bacteria. a high-leave lab was preparing samples last week but evidently, researchers failed to make that bacteria inactive before it was sent to three other labs. they're investigating what happened there. president obama is sending 300 u.s. military advisers to iraq to help the iraqi government deal with the rising insurgency there. the president insists that american forces will not be returning to combat there. yesterday we showed you some of our interview with secretary kerry. as some of the big news events unfolded. we'll talk to him about how much power he really has, is the the west wing that really runs the show. also, what his daughters thought of his recent meeting with leonardo dicaprio. >> love that he brings his dog to work. also can't resist a day at the beach? why you may be addicted to the sun.

one that may be as strong as those to drugs or alcohol. let's begin with a warning for parents. with temperatures on the rise, there has a rise of parents leaving children alone in sweltering cars. gabe gutierrez has more on that story. this is something we all need to be aware of, gabe. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we tell these stories every summer but so far this year 13 kids have died in hot cars. even with temperatures outside at 80 degrees, temperatures in here can soar to 120 degrees. in less than an hour. today police in comp county, georgia, are investigating how a 22-month-old boy ended up in the back seat of a car in the blistering heat for seven hours. his father now charged with murder. >> it's puzzling how someone could forget that they have a child in the back seat. >> reporter: more than 720 kids have died after being left in hot vehicles since 1998. on average that's 38 kids a year. >> it can happen to any parent or caregiver. the vast majority this has

happened to thus far, they're loving and caring parents. >> reporter: in the past two months, this 4-year-old was killed in texas, this 2-year-old in sarasota, florida. and just this week near orlando, police say another child died when her father left her inside his truck. >> she's been in the car for hours. i absolutely forgot about her. >> reporter: few people know that pain more than richie greg. the south carolina dad says he forgot to drop off his daughter sophia at day care last month and left her sleeping in the back seat of his car in 90 degree weather. >> it's so easy for the child to go to sleep and you not realize that they're still in there. because your brain is on autopilot. >> reporter: he's been charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. but he says it was an accident and wants his story to serve as a reminder to all parents. >> a massive amount of guilt that you feel. as a father, you know, you're the protector. you know? and you're daddy.

nobody was hurt, but it raised fears part of the hospital might drop into the mississippi river. the complex is in no danger of collapse. the mudslide was caused by heavy rainfall. in the largest case of its kind, 75 workers at the federal center for disease control and prevention are being treated for possible anthrax exposure. officials blame an accidental security lapse in a lab where samples were prepared for anthrax research. no one has shown symptoms and no threat to the public. new york city reached a $40 million settlement with five black and hispanic men wrongly convicted in a jogger case. they spent years in prison accused of raping and beating a white investment banker in 1989. it stirred racial tension. the convictions were thrown out after another man confessed to the crime and dna testing backed up his claim.

salon. longer days, warmer weather, and the sun. summer is nearly here, and so are all those weekends soaking it all in. you know to slather on the sun screen, but be honest. do you always do it? >> i don't usually wear sun screen. >> nope. i don't. >> reporter: you may like that nice sun-kissed look, but new research says it could be more akin to addiction than vanity. in a new lab study, mice were exposed to uv rays equivalent to have an hour of midday florida sun for a fair skinned person. after a week of exposure, the mice's endorphins chemicals known to create a pleasant feeling in humans rose dramatically. >> there are powers at hand that are, in fact, very significant. and it is possible when one is exposed to ultraviolet radiation that there are behavioral changes that reach beyond our simple desire to enjoy the sun. >> reporter: meaning despite the repeated warnings of skin cancer

me. you know, i had a belief in god. and that definitely, that was a significant part in jesus. a significant part to my story. and that really impacted my decisions. you know? and that gave me a hope and a purpose in life. and i took that opportunity and i said you've got to do something for me here. and then i started eating a little healthier, eating a little less. then started moving. my first exercise was standing up and sitting back down. that was very painful. my back started hurting, my legs hurt. >> but you kept at it. you took a certain amount of steps. it didn't happen overnight, but it happened. justin, thank you for being here. congratulations on all your amazing success. >> thank you so much. >> over to matt. now to what's become an annual tradition involving the new york yankees. the team's hope week. i spent some time at the stadium

a very good friday morning to you. 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a three-hour amber alert in the south bay has been called off. 8-year-old helena va lensio carrillo was taken from the santa clara area late last night. she was dropped off at the sunnyvale police department three hours later. now, officers are lacki ilookin her alleged kidnapper, jose valencia. no word on the connection between her and the girl. the car he used was found abandoned in sunnyvale shortly after that amber alert was issued. investigators are looking for evidence to figure out the cause of a grass fire that destroyed two homes in the san jose foothills. neighbors say they first saw smoke coming from a vacant home yesterday afternoon. the flames quickly spread to another house and surrounding brush. people who live in the

neighborhood were prepared, making sure they had defensible space around their homes. it was close to the 680/280 interchange in the east foothills. 17 fire department engines jumped on the fire, hitting it from the air and the ground, taking it down. we'll have a look at weather and traffic right after this break.

away. for most of us, if you get a bee sting, what you should do, this is interesting. don't use tweezers to pick off the tweezer. there's a venom sack and you can keep injecting venom in your skin. use a credit card or your fingernail with a straight end to scratch it off. >> i never leave it at home. >> spiders, how do you know if you have been bitten by one? >> you may not know until a couple hours later. a couple spiders you need to watch out for. in the midwest, look out for the black widow. everyone's heard about it, but may not know what it looks like. i's got like an hourglass. >> and the red spot. >> if you get bit, what do you do? >> it will look like fangs. you may not have symptoms until 15 minutes or an hour later.
