beat germany on thursday? >> absolutely. this team is like i said gaining momentum with every game. and i think their best is ahead of them. >> indeed. so many of us are cheering. mia hamm, great to talk to you. appreciate it. >> thank you, guys. >> and jermaine jones scored one goal of the two we had. want to correct that. let's now talk about the breaking news in iraq. secretary of state john kerry arrived in baghdad this morning to meet nuri al maliki. this as islamists gain control of more than western cities. richard engel is there this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, carson. there's a great deal at stake here. the united states spent thousands of lives and nearly a decade to build a new political system in iraq. now john kerry's arrived on this emergency mission to try and prevent everything that the u.s. helped put in place here from disintegrating.

militants from i.s.i.s. and those from the hussein regime now control much. the army is releasing footage of a counteroffensive with troops on the move and conducting air strikes. but the iraqi military offensive capability is limited and the allies are taking advantage of it. secretary of state john kerry is now in the region to try to help the iraqi government out of this crisis. but stopping in cairo on his way to baghdad, kerry was challenged. a journalist asking him if the u.s. isn't responsible by invading iraq in the first place. >> what's happening in iraq is not happening because of the united states in terms of the current crisis. the united states shed blood and worked hard for years to provide iraqis the opportunity to have their own governance and have their own government.

>> reporter: many in the middle east aren't buying that the u.s. gave iraq opportunity, but that it failed to use it. here in baghdad kerry met with prime minister maliki amid growing calls for him to step down. >> the united states would like to see the iraqi people find leadership that is prepared to represent all of the people of iraq. >> reporter: but kerry said the u.s. can't choose the political leaders for it. kerry's mission this time is extremely difficult. the united states doesn't have nearly the same amount of leverage it did a few years ago. the iraqi army is still collapsing and prime minister maliki shows no sign he's willing to step down. savannah, back to you. >> thank you so much. let's go to natalie. she's got an update on bowe bergdahl. >> he has been released now at brooke army medical center. he's now being treated as an outpatient in san antonio. the taliban captured bergdahl in 2009.

he was freed in that prisoner swap last month. an army statement said his reintegration process is continuing with the social interactions and exposure to more people. three journalists for al jazerra were arrested. two of the men arrested to seven years in prison. the third got a ten-year sentence. a highly anticipated report of the jerry sandusky case will be released today. pennsylvania's attorney general has repeatedly questioned why it took three years for charges to be filed against sandusky. but according to to the inquirer, they had a good reason to take their time. they were worried the original testimony would not be enough to seal a conviction. he was arrested on 45 counts on child sexual abuse.

soccer star hope solo will appear in court after appearing over the weekend on domestic violence charges. it was said she assaulted her sister and 17-year-old nephew saturday. officers said she appeared to be intoxicated. five hikers had to be air lifted to safety after becoming stranded by flames in california. firefighters were battling this brush fire above glendale. nearly 200 firefighters are working on the blaze. two firefighters were hurt. no homes have been evacuated, but some roads were closed in the area. and some fishermen off the coast of new jersey almost bit off more than they could chew during their weekend outing. the group was fishing off of cape may when they were approached by this 16 foot great white shark with that open mouth and clearly a big appetite. the shark was circling the boat for about 20 minutes before eventually ripping the chum

boulder by boulder day after day through this treacherous landscape and unable to come up with any more clues. >> reporter: camping in the national forest with fellow firefighter taylor beyers, herdman reportedly chased after his dog duke running into the mountains without supplies. sunday, the only sign of hope. duke found by hikers in the area. >> i saw the dog. it was literally passed out in the lap of my sister. >> reporter: with hundreds of searchers scouring 50 square miles by foot -- >> and this is approximately where they camped. >> reporter: -- helicopters and drones have crisscrossed the sky. herdman is an experienced outdoorsman, a family man. >> we're going to continue every day. >> reporter: this morning, rescue teams will scale back their search, but in these mountains, many are still

you're watching "today in the bay." good morning to you, 7:26 now i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning a memorial is drawing far man hit and killed bade vta light rail in the south bay. cameras were there as a woman dropped off floufrs near the station in san jose. >> reporter: last night a man was chasing a dog when he ran in front of a train. police are not releasing much information about the victim, but he is in his 50s. the dog is okay this morning. federal investigators are in the bay area this morning now looking into a deadly plane crash in livermore, sheriff's deputies say jerry parker died when he jumped out of a plane right before had crashed.

you're watching "today in the bay." good morning everyone, 7:56 i'm scott mcgrew. tomorrow a federal safety board will tell the world what it found while investigating the asiana flight 214 crash at s fo. investigators say there are no signs of any mechanical or electric problems with the plane. also included in the investigation and analysis of the morning crews response to the accident after the crash. one of the passengers was run over by a san francisco fire truck. she and two other teens were killed in the july 6th crash. about 200 others were hurt. nbc stephen stock will be at the hearings tomorrow. he'll have live updates throughout the day. of course our investigative team has done several in depth stories about that crash. you can head to nbcbayarea.com and search asiana crash to see what we have uncovered.

and we're back with disappointing news for parents who thought they finally got the kids out of the house. a lot of graduates are moving back in with mom and dad after college. a growing group that's called the boomerang generation. here's kerry sanders. >> reporter: it wasn't supposed to be like this. samantha stokes is back at home after graduating from florida state university two years ago. despite her bachelors degree in biology and a minor in chemistry, she's been unable to find a job as a marine biologist. >> i have three part-time jobs. but it's a sad fact when i know i could be making the same money babysitting. >> reporter: living in her childhood bedroom, it turns out samantha is part of a growing trend. according to a piece in "new york times" magazine, one in five people in their 20s and 30s are currently living with their parents. tough economic times and fewer jobs. a generation ago, only one in

ten young adults moved back home. >> it might have been a sign in the past that you were a loser, that you had failed. i think now it is often a sign you're being smart. >> everyone that doesn't know me, i have two great roommates, i also call them mom and dad. >> reporter: but there are restrictions that come with being -- >> you're with mom and dad. there's rules. >> reporter: annie has been living back home for five years now. the 27-year-old graduated from loyola university with a degree in advertising and public relations. she also left college with an $80,000 debt. >> i don't feel like a failure. i think i just accepted this is the situation. especially with living at home and just being here. >> reporter: the new york federal reserve bank reports nearly 45% of people under the age of 30 have outstanding loans with an average debt of more than $20,000. like so many college graduates who can't find a job, samantha and annie are staying positive

perseverance so they don't quit. that's really hard psychologically. >> matt, how is this affecting your relationship with your parents or friends of yours? >> i've been lucky enough to start an organization. but i know many people. i think we need to remove the stigma. the recession has a lingering implication. it's smart to move back. because you can save money. with that savings you can afford a home or a car. so if your parents are lenient, i think living at home makes a lot of sense. of course you want to try as hard as you can to apply for jobs, to market your skills. and above all, to be creative. maybe try to start a business. >> that brings us to a great point. if you move home, do you just take the time to save or just take any job you can get. >> you should definitely take whatever job you can first while pursuing the career of your dreams. >> 60% of these kids need their parents' money. how's this working out for the parents? isn't this financially draining? >> that's something parents have to be mindful of.

you want to help your kids, that's your aim as a parent. and you have to think how is this going to help me in my retirement and come up with a plan for yourself and your young adult child. >> parents want their kids to succeed. they want them to do well. kids just want to feel independent. how do you strike a balance in the boomerang generation for both parents and kids? >> first, you have to have a conversation. have a conversation about what that's going to look like. have a plan of what you're going to do. the fact is they're not 16. there shouldn't be a curfew. you need some rules. >> come up with a plan. >> keep persevering. use your technology, right? >> yeah. young people today unlike previous generations have social media savvy tweets and use facebook and every social media mechanism possible to make yourself a marketable employee to a potential employer. >> and i think the key thing is we have to be appreciative. they have to be appreciative of

taking a look at the headlines, three big automakers are recalling millions of vehicles due to a problem with faulty air bags. honda, nissan, and mazda are recalling. these latest callbacks come nearly two weeks after toyotas recalled a similar problem. lawyers have been given the okay to scan social media sites for information on potential jurors. the american bar association says it is ethical for lawyers to look on sites like facebook and twitter for information about potential jurors and even jurors in deliberation. the ethics committee announced the position after two years of reviewing the issue. a new study finds more evidence that women who live near farmland where pesticides

station in san jose. last night the man was chasing after a dog when he ran in front of the oncoming train. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the dog is okay. federal investigators are in the bay area looking into a deadly plane crash in livermore. sheriff's deputies say 63-year-old jerry parker died when he jumped out of his plane right before it crashed. the plane took off from livermore municipal airport just before 5:00 saturday. witnesses say a few minutes later the plane caught fire and went down. we'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break.
