i'm dara brown. today could be another showdown for irs commissioner swron. the house committee will continue grilling him about missing emails that may have contained evidence about the agency's targeting of conservative groups. several angry republicans are accusing the agency of covering up a scandal. at least one lawmaker compared the lost emails to watergate. i'm joined by nbc's tracie potts in washington d.c. what can we expect today? >> well, dara, you can expect to hear from a white house attorney who used to be at the irs. this is a back and fort forth about whether or not she would testify. she is scheduled to be here on capitol hill in about two and a half hours. meantime, the committee that started out investigating whether the irs unfairly targeted conservative groups, now some of the committee members want a special prosecutor to look into why evidence disappeared. >> reporter: two years worth of emails that congress wants to see have been destroyed, and some republicans think that was no accident. >> you possibly have people at

the irs who are committing crimes, and they're not being held accountable. >> they were to and from lois lerner, the now retired employee, who headed the office that determines whether groups seeking tax exempt status are too political. lawmakers believed the emails could explain why. the irs, she tells congress, he first learned in april that lerner's hard drive was destroyed after her computer crashed and backups were recycled. >> we were going to wait to produce all of lois lerner's emails. >> you can't give us all her emails. you lost them. don't give me that statement. >> reporter: the irs blames budget cuts. >> it's not unusual for computers anywhere to fail. especially at the irs. >> reporter: democrats defended the irs noting ten of thousands of emails were submitted. >> it shows it was not intentional. this wasn't nefarius or a

conspiracy. >> i answered it. if you have a magical way for me to do that. >> my time has expired, and i've lost my patience with you. >> i think the display of this kind of disrespect. >> up today jennifer o'connor, the former irs attorney at the white house. initially she was asked to testify. the white house yesterday said no. the subpoena went out. then they got another response saying from the white house that she would be here this morning. sn . >> tracie, thanks so much. expecting more fireworks today. it is a runoff day for the mississippi senate primary. the race between tea party backed chris mcdaniel and encome bent senator thad mccochran. you may remember that four mcdaniel supporters were arrested for breaking into a

nursing home. now a staff of the cochran campaign has been arrested. this time for allegedly destroying mcdaniel campaign signs. the latest poll conducted by a democratic firm has mcdaniel up eight points over cochran, well outside the margin of error. the mcdaniel camp is preparing to send in poll watchers at today's runoff, a tactic republicans use to intimidate black voters in the south for decades. the justice department will be monitoring the situation. united states has reached a key legal agreement with iraq. the pentagon announced monday that the military advisors would not be prosecuted under iraqi law. as part of the deal, the advisors would be protected by diplomatic immunity. >> there seems to be growing op sfwligs to america's involvement in the conflict. according to the latest cbs-"new york times" poll, more than half of those surveyed don't support

president obama's handling of the crisis. le-quarters believe the iraq war does not justify the high number of casualties. president obama's foreign policy has often been under fire with nearly 60% saying they don't support his new strategy. roughly 170 children across the country are now in safe hands after a nationwide sting against sex trafficking. the fbi announced monday that more than 280 people were arrested during the operation. the crackdown covered more than 100 u.s. cities and targeted places such as casinos, escort services and strip clubs. the fbi said the operation sends a clear message to perpetrators. >> the lesson of operation cross-country is that our children are not for sale. that we will respond and crush these pimps who would crush these children. >> this is the fbi's eighth operation, and they've rescued

more than 35 children so far. a 3-year-old girl allegedly aasked to leave a kfc restaurant because of her facial scars. it seems the story may be a hoax. kfc hired investigators to dig a little deeper into the story. they combed through security video at the kfc restaurant in mississippi where the incident allegedly took place, but they found no evidence of the little girl ever being there. no record of the meal she had apparently eaten that day. kfc donated thousands of dollars after an apology to help pay for the girl's medical bills. sfwlifshlgts hillary clinton is getting support from katy perry. perry posted a picture of the two of them on instagram saying she would write clinton a theme song if she needs it to run for president in 2016. the singer also posted the message on twitter where hillary later responded. clinton referenced one of
