gender nor where these people are from but we know two people died in the crash, one person ejected six feet to the left of the car, the other still inside the bmw which the chp says came up stolen out of san francisco. if we shift to the right it's an active scene now. advanced investigative team, multi disciplinardisciplinary a investigation team with chp arrived in last half hour or so. the team trained in studying things like how tire friction works, determining speed. they are here, just getting started. we're just told by chp the preliminary estimate for when the team will be done is 10:00 this morning, then the coroner has to come out and get the bodies and so this is going to be a pretty long time before this reopens. now, san francisco firefighters were able to put the car fire out be the car burst into flames after hitting a barrier coming down 5th street off-ramp.

the firefighter telling us there's a crash here every month or so. one of the chp involved in the chase of the car says he and his partner begins pursuing the bmw in oakland heading into the bay bridge, into the toll plaza area. the car did not stop and started to speed up near the new bay bridge tower. the officer say his was going up to 120, 130 miles an hour and giving the suspects in the car space, at least a couple hundred feet and at the time it was light traffic. so if we come back live, you get a nice shot down the 5th street off-ramp where the investigation's happening. to the right the barrier where the car hit, spun out. ended up here close to harrison street and then on fire. again, this chp investigative team will be out here. the coroner will not be out until the team's done and wrapped up. so we're expecting this to take several hours, if not even

longer than that. the chp saying that this is the third crash in this stretch in just a week and a half. so a dangerous stretch here. that is the latest from the scene. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> tragedy at that site. but now certainly affecting that commute. >> we don't want to forget the human tragedy, two folks lost as a result of the crash, a major impact on everybody's drive into san francisco. look at the video. the fiery crash what happened after a car careened off of the bridge and 5th street off-ramp, a fire earlier, as crews put that out. the present day scene, as stephanie has shown us. behind the car on the right, cement railing on the side, that's what people will talk about the k-railing, the car, thank you for that zoom-in, the car flew off the freeway, presumably hit the cement rail, the k-rail, and crashed over across the roadway and then burst into flame as we just saw.

transit across the dumbarton an option and san mateo between the two is moving smoothly, traffic hitting hayward now but watch the 92 stretch as potential for more slowing there. rest of the bay typical for the commute. >> you'll be delivering updates and radio. >> radio and twitter. >> thank you. we'll keep checking back. fire trucks and flashing lights crewed called out overnight to put out flames near the building in the castro. investigators are trying to find out if the latest fire's the work of a serial arsonist. the fire department released surveillance individual yost suspected arsonist wearing a tan shirt and giants baseball cap. investigators say he's responsible for a dozen arson fires in the soma neighborhood. the fires have been set on a construction site, trash bins and buildings. oakland firefighter is in

critical condition, he's badly hurt after his fire truck overturned during a training exercise. "today in the bay's" nanette miranda joins us live at oakland highland hospital. the firefighter getting a lot of support. >> reporter: that's right. 55-year-old mitchell ow had a steady stream of visitors here at highland hospital from firefighters and family's at his side as he's being treated in the intensive care unit. at the helm of an aircraft rescue firefighting rig where he lost control of the truck and tipped it. it happened before noon during a red alert training exercise testing emergency response times to airports incidents. ow was not ejected. the truck was carrying 3,000 gallons of water and 2400 gallons of foam. best possible care was nearby bier for ow's injuries.

he recently transferred to the airport unit to try something different and joined in the elite airport firefighting team. in his three decade career, ow known for being talented, athletic, kind, and very polite. characteristics co-workers say you want in a firefighter. >> heavy rescue, a type of person that you want on your crew. he's the type of person in you call 911 you want him in your house, you want him to respond. >> reporter: the chp is investigating the crash. the fire department's not commenting on the event that led up to the accident until that probe is complete. one encouraging sign a firefighter visiting ow says ow gave him a thumbs up. definitely encouraging, comforting, but maybe he'll just pull through. live in oakland, nanette miranda, "today in the bay." >> at 6:06. happening now, east palo alto police are asking for your help

a live look outside san francisco. 5th streetoff ramp, the reason the off-ramp into san francisco is closed, because of this deadly crash and the investigation which continues, the bmw right there, fiery crash early this morning. the investigation continues. having a major impact on the commute. stephanie chuang on the scene. i'm covering traffic flow, giving you alternates. expected to learn more about the condition of the oakland firefighter severely hurt during a training accident yesterday at the airport. mitchell ow was driving a fire truck during a drill, something happened, the truck flips over. ow, a 28-year veteran of the

department. the ntsb says the crash at sfo a result of pilot error. the report said the crew mismanaged asiana's flight 214's descent and did not monitor the plane's speed. ntsb made 27 safety recommendations in hope of preventing another crash like this. new research showing 3-d mammograms may be better at finding cancer than regular scans. technology detected one additional case of breast cancer for every 1,000 scans compared to conventional mammograms, 15% fewer false alarms as well. santa clary county approved a temporary ban on pot shops. leader were worried the crackdown would send medical marijuana clinics into unincorporated parts of the county so they passed the ban. a permanent one could be approved later. two weeks ago passing tough restrictions where clinics could operate. >> a federal judge says the government's no fly list is

unconstitutional. ruling air travel's a liberty. it's okay to make a list of people to dangerous to allow on a plane she wants them to give people notice when included and a reason why. the person must have the ability to submit evidence to challenge the decision. u.s. justice department is reviewing that ruling. the government has previously argued because there are other ways to travel there's no right to travel by air, so you don't have a right know you're on the list or why. chris christie facing a second bridge scandal, this time the polaski skyway. an attorney investigating whether funding to repair the skyway was misrepresented in bond documents filed by the new york and new jersey port authority. christie's administration pushed for the repairs and pressed the port authority to pay for them. if the report is true, it could

wry late state and federal security laws. congress looking for your take on driverless cars. >> at 11:00 this morning members of congress will hold a live facebook chat, talk about how rances in transportation will help to shape the future. before the morning's event, lawmakers were supposed to get a ride in a driverless car like this one, a firsthand look at how they work. this is video of the car they were supposed to drive in. we say supposed to because that car broke down. the car brought in from carnegie melon university where scientists were working with google to develop the driverless car prototype. no word on what went wrong but developers hope the car will be back in working order today. investors watching gopro closely. the company expected to price shares tonight in its ipo potentially raising more than $490 million. gopro will start trading its stock on the nasdaq tomorrow.

profound heat wave. looks like we are going to see that starting sunday, continuing through next week. so, a give and take in the weather department. mother nature trying to find that equilibrium. we'll see big-time changes. area of low pressure riding down the coast lean and increasing cloud cover and wind speed. what we're watching for this morning, it's cool. the temperature above the ocean is 53 degrees. as that cool ocean air is moving all the way inland, that beautiful cool pacific, moist air transports into inland valley spots and keeping hi hillsides moist. next week, like i said with that heat wave coming our way, that's what we're talking about. 77 degrees, not today in the south bay. 73 peninsula. out in san francisco, hit 67 degrees out there. same for oak town. 82 north away 79 in the

tri-valley. as we head throughout tonight, more changes coming your way as an area of low pressure gets organized and starts coming into the bay area. north bay stands best chance of seeing showers. we stop the clock on futurecast at 11:00 p.m., getting a bit of green here, even down to the peninsula. then i stop that clock for you tomorrow and tracking showers on the radar, great news for fire danger as well as our air quality which could be suffering this time of year. a preview of what we're in store for as we get into the weekend and next week. up to 93 in the north bay by sunday. yeah, close to records as of monday. so a rapid warm-up from 76 tomorrow to 97 degrees in the north bay by monday. more weather whiplash, but not too bad. let's check that drive. that's going to be rough in some spots. >> good morning. i'm glad you previous faced it by saying some spots. a big contrast with the commute.

the bay bridge had the metering lights turned on. look at this big backup, this is very unusual for a wednesday during the summertime. but we do have all lanes backed up, 580 slow off of 24. east shore freeway, berkeley curve starting to drag as well. the reason, let's look at the video, a view from the crash this morning getting into san francisco. it caused this fiery -- this car, this bmw careened off the bay bridge at 5th street off-ramp, two folks have died as a result of the crash. stephanie chuang continues to follow the investigation at scene. the investigation will keep it closed until after 10:00 a.m. this morning. the impact right now, that closure has, look, everybody here who typically heads to the bay bridge watch out. you might want to use the richmond/san rafael bridge. then the golden gate bridge is clear or south toward the san

every piece of evidence here. chp tells us a car was stolen, chased it from oakland. they say the car may have been going 130 miles an hour, took the 5th street off-ramp and crashed, bursting into flames. unfortunately, both people in the car died at the scene. traffic in the area incredibly backed up, probably will be for several more hours. >> let's take a live look at scene right now. investigators have been out there combing over the area, lots of evidence to go through. they are not expected to wrap up that investigation until at least 10:00 this morning, you see a photographer on the scene. want to bring in mike right now because this is the scene that is still active there. we understand harrison between 4th and 5th is reopened. >> stephanie confirmed that. that's 5th street off-ramp off of the bay bridge and the san francisco approach. you saw the live picture there, that is the 5th and harrison. the reason it's closed earlier

crash and fire, two folks dead as laura reported, stephanie continues to follow the investigation at the scene. harrison was closed, it has reopened between 4th and 5th. surface streets are open through the area but the backup on the bay bridge, first of all, start with alternate, b.a.r.t., good alternate for you. that system reports no delays for those b.a.r.t. trains under the water from oakland into san francisco. the metering lights at the bay bridge are turned on early a sizable backup that started and continues to bill out of the maze and off of the east shore freeway. ac transit, take it across dumbarton bridge, and the san mateo bridge good alternate as well. getting into san francisco going to be tough. this closure expected to last until 10:00 a.m., if it lasts longer that could be affected by folks heading into the giants game at 12:45, adding additional burden to the bay bridge and more slowing. again, sad for the loss of two lives but this is impacting so many people on the morning

commute, folks will say, what's up with the delay. now you know. plan for the slower drive. use the richmond/san rafael bridge to the north as well. you have to pay two tolls and then the rest of the bay very light. it's a wednesday and typical flow for other spots. >> google io conference, add another 5,000, 7,000 not normally in the area. >> because they don't know the area welsh probably slower. >> use google maps. >> of course they will. >> thanks. >> depend on mike. 6:32. the civil trial pitting bryan stow against the dodgers. stow is a giants fan who was permanently disabled after a brutal beating in the dodger stadium parking lot. a doctor hired by the dodgers thinks stow should stay at his parents' home but cared for by attendant. that is the least expensive out of four treatment options that the dodgers' lawyers priced out.

this would be a good one to pick. trouble on the bay bridge. this is san mateo. check in with mike and get alerts on your traffic in a minute. 6:38. chaos in cairo. four subway stations rocked by explosions. least eight people injured according to reuters. the blast happened in central and northern cairo, all caught by home made explosives. no one's claimed responsibility for the attacks. students who survived a sinking ferry returning to school for the first time since the disaster at sea. some students bowed their heads, other cried as they walked to school. many stopped to hug parents and friends. one adult carried a sign that said" we will pray the dead will rest in peace." that ferry sank in april, leaving 300 dead or missing. prosecutors accused the crew of abandoning ship while passengers were trapped on board.

6:43. we update breaking news. the morning commute a mess in san francisco, getting into the city, as investigators go through every scrap of melted metal ripped from a car as it crashed in the city's soma neighborhood. the crash happened early this morn as a speeding car was trying to get away from officers. stephanie chuang live at the scene. it will be some time before they re open that off-ramp. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning. we're hearing at least 10:00 this morning. this off-ramp will be closed. the wreckage really bad. we don't know the name, the age or the gender or where these two people are from, but two people killed in this crash.

you can see that bmw convertible there, also burnt in a car fire. one person ejected about six feet to the left of the car, the other still inside. on the ground, dozens of markers for all of the different points of impact and the different car parts cross the 5th street off-ramp and farther up the ramp the chp's advanced crash scene investigators are out here and could be here through 10:00 this morning, that's the preliminary estimate. all of the markers, dozens of them, marking of course what they're looking at. the car started up there, because it was coming down the off ramp, spun out hitting a barrier where you see investigators and came down here, closer to harrison street. and then caught on fire. we have some video of that, san francisco firefighters able to put the car fire out within an hour or so. one firefighter telling me there's an accident it seems at off-ramp every month or two. the turn itself is one that has

to be taken slowly but people going quickly. one of the two chp officers involved in the chase of the bmw says it was around 3:00 in oakland when they ran the plate, came up stolen out of san francisco, the pursuit began on to the bay bridge, the bmw driver speeding up around the new bay bridge tower. chp officer says he was going up to 120 to 130 miles an hour. a couple. hundred feet behind the bmw, there was light traffic, so no one else hurt. live, the medical examiner back on scene. the coroner had come out and left again. the office has to wait until the investigators are done with all of their work before the coroner's office can take the bodies away. again, the investigators here through 10:00 but the coroner's office has to do the work, too. expect that this stretch will be shut down for quite some time. live in san francisco, stephanie

smoothly. it's the straightaway things bog down. let's get you a look out there as well. talking about the traffic maps and flow of the traffic into san francisco. that's the slow drive. bogging down around treasure island. final approach into the city that's the big deal. stephanie talks about this continuing until at least 10:00 a.m. live shot, here what happens's going on. this is the crash, tragic scene two folks died in the fiery crash. the investigation continues on the side of the road. as we zoom out, you also see this yellow markers, each one of these is a bit of debris and evidence that has to be examined and that's why it's going to take hours more as folks continue to figure out what exactly contributed to the crash. right over here you see that cement railing, stephanie talked about the car having hit the k-rail. this is the railing on the side that they refer to as k-railing to prevent a car from going off the road. the car presumably hit that, careened back across. thank you josh the photographer.

"today in the bay's" nanette miranda joins us live at highland hospital where the firefighter gave an encouraging sign. >> reporter: that's right. a firefighter visiting mitchell ow here says ow gave him a thumbs up. an encouraging sign. the 55-year-old was sustaining life threatening injuries when he tipped the firefighting rig

during a training exercise at oakland airport. the drill tests emergency response times to airport incidents. the accident happened just before noon. the rig had 3,000 gallons of water and 420 gallons of foam in. the 28-year veteran transferred to the elite airport unit because he wanted to try something different. he developed many admirers during his long career. >> one has nothing but the kindest things to say about him and the contributions that he made to the organization and his service delivery in the city of oakland. we're really hoping that this turns out okay. >> reporter: ow has had a steady stream of visitors here at highland hospital. we're told his sister and wife are at his bedside in the intensive care unit. the chp is investigating the accident. until that's complete, the fire department will not comment on events leading up to the crash. nanette miranda, "today in the bay." 6:53.

former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband will be in the bay area today to accept awards for their work preventing gun violence. the awards will be given out at annual event in san francisco marking 21 years. since a gunman stormed a high-rise office building on california and market, killing eight people. the event honors those who work to end gun violence including survivors of the shooting and loved ones of the victims. several local groups will be honored. remember of course three years ago giffords was shot in the head during an assassination attempt. while she survived, six other people were killed. four former san jose state students in court to face hate crime charges, three students including a minor, have been expelled. for reportedly subjecting one of their african-american classmates to repeated racially motivated abuse. the students reportedly harassed the victim for weeks calling him derogatory names, displaying a

confederate flag. the four pleaded not guilty. if you have graffiti on your property or business and do not remove in 48 hours it could cost you. yesterday supervisors passed an ordinance requiring business owners and homeowners to clean up graffiti within two days or face fines. the ordinance requires property owners to repay the costs of graffiti removal to the county. if the responsible party fails to pay it the county can put a lien on the property. treesh island could be transformed. the board moving forward with the measure to clear the way for parts of the island to be handed over to san francisco by the end of the year. the chronicle says this includes eastern end of the island along with yorba buena island. right now the land's owned by the u.s. navy. the plan calls for 8,000 new homes and 300 acres of land for parks. the navy's currently doing

radiation testing on the western end of the island. that land won't likely be transferred to the city for at least a couple of years. ymca will be closing a popular location on the peninsula when its lease expires this fall. the site on page mill road in palo alto will close october 1st. the ymca says the locate is just too small so the organization has decided to close it to allow members to go to any other bay area locations. that locate serves about 3,000 people. unusual distress call issued at a south bay waterway. the drought is drying up ponds at overfelt guard bes park. people have been illegally dumping pet turtles there for decades. in a normal year, the district would fill the evaporating ponds but because of the drought, the ponds are a low priority. there is a push on to display more signs in the area saying to visitors it's illegal to dump the animal there. >> save the turtles.

6:56. san mateo-based gopro expected to price its shares tonight in its ipo. potentially raising more than $490 million. gopro will start trading stock on the nasdaq tomorrow. ntsb says last year's deadly crash at sfo a result of pilot error. the report said the crew mismanaged asiana flight 214's descent and didn't monitor the plane's speed. the ntsb made 27 safety recommendations in hopes of preventing another crash like that one. >> in san francisco, the westbound i-80 off-ramp to 5th street expected to be shut down for the next several hours because of this crash. officers say a stolen bmw trying to get away from the chp when it slapped into a concrete barrier going up to 130 miles an hour. two people inside the car were killed. tragedy there, but the thing is, it's created a traffic nightmare. >> it has. wednesday, let's get a look for folks turning -- listening for
