it 150 feet. that's half a football field. before dropping it on the house and into the front yard.ç >> tornado! >> reporter: across the midwest it's been a week of duck and cover. day after day of violent weather forced people to seek shelter. from the storms. >> it was horrifying. the house shook. it was a loud boom. it scared me really bad. >> reporter: giant trees toppled, homes and rvs torn apart as the latest twister cut a path through the southwest corner of indianapolis. don rackley lives in one of the worst-hit neighborhoods. he grabbed his two young grandsons and ran into the bathroom with the tornado bearing down. >> as i closed the door, i heard a big boom. the only thing i was cared about was the grand babies and my dog. we got them all. >> reporter: jennifer cahill tweeted these pictures as they took cover. >> we took cover, going into the

interior hallway of our building. >> reporter: near chicago, funnel clouds were spotted in the western suburbs. sections of a major expressway were shut down due to flash flooding. this weather has also left many in minnesota bailing out. damage from widespread flooding there is likely to reach into the millions of dollars and authorities say emergency funds are drying up. this morning crews are picking up tree limbs and power lines that were blown down but they're relieved that no one was reported to be injured here. savannah? >> john yang, thank you very much. now the latest news out of iraq where iraqi soldiers are trying to get the control of their country from islamic militants. meantime when it comes to the 2003 war in iraq, a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows 71% of americans say the war was not worth it. richard engel's in baghdad this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, carson. around 130 of the up to 300

american military advisers and special forces are now in iraq working with iraqi troops. and from what we were able to see of the iraqi army, they can use their help. iraqi troops are trying to re-take the country one small step at a time. capturing a village in the west from sunni insurgents. and at dawn, repelling militants who raided iraq's biggest oil refinery. iraqi forces are still struggling to hold the plant. negotiations are under way for local tribes to take over the facility. it's just one more sign that the iraqi army isn't nearly strong enough to take the whole country back from militants who are tearing it apart. we traveled with this major general, the controller of the strongest division in the country. one of the best in the country. but one he says needs help.

we need american air strikes, he says. the general was instructing his troops on where to build barricades to prevent insurgents from storming the capital. the militants consider this a strategic place, he said. the general's intelligence is that there are sleeper cells in the area waiting to join the fight. this is the iraqi army's front line south of baghdad. we are now about 20 miles from the city. the militants control position over in those groves. they have arrived right on baghdad's door step. most of the general's troops were trained by u.s. soldiers, but they don't have the same firepower. his division of 15,000 troops has no tanks, no air cover. the general can try to hold ç baghdad's southern flank, but not much more. the iraqi military is supplying its best troops around baghdad, but even some of those soldiers complained about corruption. privates and sergeants telling us they have to kick back some

of their salary to junior officers. they didn't appear to have the same enthusiasm to fight as their general did. carson, savannah, back to you. >> all right. richard engel in baghdad, thanks. back home, the results are in from several close primary races across the country. in a key senate race, the result was unexpected. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. this is the mississippi senate race where a lot of people thought the establishment long-time senator thad cochran would go down to defeat but he held off a tea party challenge. >> it's a real seesaw between the tea party sentiment and the establishment gop. cochran rallying the troops here. got the establishment behind him, got a lot of people to wake up and say we're in real trouble here. in the end, keanes matter. the state senator chris mcdaniel who was up against cochran wasn't able to close well. it doesn't mean the tea party sentiment is defeated. it's going back and forth and

these races. this is a big advantage for the establishment on this one. >> yes. and of course we all remember what happened to eric cantor defeated by a tea party candidate not long ago. let me turn to your conversation with former president bill clinton. we'll see more of it on "meet the press" sunday, but you asked about hillary clinton's comments recently they left the white house dead broke. let me play a piece of that interview. >> it is factually true that we were several million dollars in debt. everybody now assumes that what happened in the intervening years was automatic. i'm shocked it's happened. i'm shocked that people still want me to come give talks. i'm grateful. >> when you say you pay ordinary taxes, unlike other people who are really well off who pay taxes maybe just off capital gains. can you understand as a political matter, can you see that could strike people as being out of touch? >> yeah, but she's not out of touch.she advocated and worked senator for things that were good for ordinary people. and before that, all her life,

and the people asking her questions should put this into some sort of context. >> david, i assume the clintons would like to dispense with this issue once and for all. do you think they've done that? >> the former president talked about the fact that you can be wealthy in politics. you just have to be transparent about it. i think the tension has come from the fact that bill clinton and hillary clinton in many ways see sthemthemselves as the coup from arkansas that came into washington. the president saying i had the lowest net worth of any president coming into office. they probably still see themselves that way, but in the intervening years they've made a lot of money. perhaps she chose her words wrong and not offering the context the president said should be offered even in the question. the reality is people can accept this well and not make a judgment about whether she is out of touch. here's the other piece of the tension, savannah. in politics right now republicans and democrats, there's a lot of populism out there, a lot of suspicion of big

establishment candidates. the clintons are those. there are those on the republican side as well. and that's why these issues about wealth and relatability are real issues for 2016. >> david gregory, thank you for that. we'll see more of your interview with president clinton on "meet the press." now to the overnight developments in the bite seen around the world. luis suarez is facing a two-year suspension if he's found guilty of biting italy's defender during the world cup match. >> reporter: they say there's no crying in baseball but apparently there's biting in soccer. luis suarez, one of the top five players in the world, appeared to gnaw competitor. >> it looks to me. >> reporter: the italian defender even pulled his shirt down to reveal what he says is a bite mark.

flight, that struck a sea wall on approach to san francisco international airport. it skidded off the runway then burst into flames. investigators found that the pilots relied too much on the plane's automated systems and that they didn't effectively monitor their air speed on the final approach. prison officials are searching for a convicted murderer who managed to escape and then got hold of a shotgun. this is surveillance video of timothy buffington, serving a 20-year sentence in pine bluff, arkansas. officials say he was doing yard work at a house on prison grounds. he managed to break into a safe room in that house by kicking the door down, then stole a shotgun. this morning, buffington is still on the loose. nba superstar lebron james is headed for the open market. the burning question this morning is, where's he going to go next? the four-time mvp decided to opt out of his contract with the miami heat and become a free agent at the end of the month.

that means that king james can sign a new contract with any team, including miami. while, obviously fans in pretty much any city would love to have james join their fan, the heat, cleveland cavs, clippers and lakers are front-runners. england may have been knocked out of the world cup already but the team's souvenir mugs are a hot seller because of a glaring mistake. the manufacturer made mugs with the england squad -- >> wait a minute. >> instead of the defender it used a picture of president obama instead. the mug maker said a junior staff member was to blame, not realizing the image was really america's commander in chief. don't know who doesn't realize that the commander in chief. no one else caught the mistake and they are selling for $3400 and it was going to be a cheap

london to detroit. he's got an interview with gm ceo mary barra. she's been dealing with cultural underlying problems at the country. the defective switch has been linked to deaths. there have been more recalls since then. matt sits down live with mary barra tomorrow on "today." we will begin this half hour with the story of a family saying they were kicked out of a kfc restaurant because of their girl's facial scars. they say it's not a hoax. it's true. >> reporter: good morning. the family insists they were kicked out, that an employee asked them to leave because victoria's face was upsetting other customers. and they also say that a kfc investigation into the matter was inconclusive. the story of a little girl who was kicked out of a kfc because of her scars spread across tv

and social media like wildfire. >> who raised a stink about this little girl just wanting mashed potatoes at a kfc? >> reporter: the family even raised $135,000 in cash. $30,000 from kfc. and was offered free surgery to help with victoria wilcher's wounds. but kfc has found their story didn't check out. specifically that neither victoria nor her grandmother showed up in surveillance video. suddenly news and social media were ablaze wondering if it all was a lie. the story about the little girl at kfc infuriates me, wrote one woman. if i were kfc or any of the falsely accused employees, i would be livid. but the wilchers aren't budging. it is unfortunate that victoria and her family are being

vilified and part of an investigation. in her hometown of jackson, mississippi, support was mixed. >> if you really wanted action taken, you should have gone higher up in kfc. gone to corporate or managers, but you took social media. >> i would hate if it did happen, but it would be worse if it was made up. >> reporter: kfc says the matter is now closed after two investigations after they did not find any evidence to support the wilchers' chain of events. they're still honoring the $30,000 commitment to the child. writing, like the rest of america, the kfc family has been moved by the story of victoria's injuries and recovery. we hope everyone keeps victoria in their thoughts and prayers. she will certainly be in ours. as for the free surgery, the doctors say they will honor their pledge to help little victoria. the family says they'll help with the money they raised with

the medical bills. just a sad story. >> katy, thank you very much. now to growing concerns over your privacy. as more people pick up recreational drones. people across the country are looking into alleged peeping cases as people claim they're being spied on. miguel almaguer has more. >> reporter: lisa says it happened outside her living room window. a drone floating 26 floors up. >> it wasn't properly closed for cameras. i was intimidated, freaked out at that point. >> reporter: she took this picture of the drone she feared was taking pictures of her. >> i was concerned it was looking at me i felt violated. >> reporter: the fight over drones and privacy has taken off recently. police say a woman assaulted a teenager in connecticut for shooting video of a beach with his drone. >> they're trying to hit the drone out of the sky. >> reporter: and this drone was

knocked out of the sky by hockey fans in los angeles. the federal aviation administration regulates commercial use of drones. but civilian use is permitted as long as pilots don't fly recklessly. now congress has asked the faa to come up with safety guidelines for personal drones by next year. but critics say 2015 will be too late. the faa estimates some 7,000 of these civilian drones will be flying across the sky by then. daniel salman uses his to monitor police activity. >> there's no regulation for my hand held camera. there shouldn't be for this. >> we see all across the board whether it's cell phone or drone flights, oftentimes the law is fighting to catch up. >> reporter: back in seattle, turns out the drone was legally taking video of a neighboring property for a developer.

good morning, everyone. 7:56. encouraging sign, thumbs up this morning from a firefighter hurt in a training accident at oakland airport. 55-year-old mitchell ow in critical condition, he was driving a fire truck during a training drill yesterday. something happened, the truck flips over, it's unclear why at this point. but the department battalion chief says ow did give him a thumbs up from the hospital bed last night. in san francisco, a busy off-ramp still closed right now as investigators collect evidence at the scene of this incredibly deadly crash. the chp tells us, this car was stolen, officers have been chasing it from oakland. the car may have been going 130 miles an hour, the 5th street off-ramp. both people in the car were killed at scene. let's bring in mike inouye for the latest on when that's going to be open. >> we hear 10:00 when it's opened, after the bulk of the morning commute. we saw the bay bridge toll plaza, backup at metering lights

stephanie gosk is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the sad story may sound familiar. a high school or college athlete in great shape collapses suddenly and dies from a heart attack. but what if there was a way to prevent it? this week "the wall street journal" asks the hotly debated question, should ekgs be mandatory for student athletes? >> eric was 15. he was funny, happy. he was a great athlete. >> reporter: eric died four years ago when his heart stopped. one of the 2,000 young people to die from sudden cardiac arrest. >> it's worth it to have an ekg. i wish i would have known this could happen in a teen. i wish i could go back. >> reporter: an ekg tracks the rhythm of the heart and pick up signs of heart problems. but most high school level athletes don't get ekgs which is

what drove dr. john rogers to start the eric paredes save a life foundation. >> every year 7,000 teens die from sudden cardiac arrest. >> reporter: performing free screenings in san diego including ekg. >> over the last four years we've screened about 12,000 students. we found over 200 that have some type of heart abnormality. conditions that they and their parents ought to know about. >> reporter: the american heart association recommends detailed evaluation of young athletes, not necessarily ekgs. if an ekg is included in a screening program, it should be done with careful attention to the quality of the ekg and of its interpretation. incorrect readings can lead to a false diagnosis and could sideline young athletes unnecessarily. >> psychologically they're set aside and told not to participate out of fear. and they may not have a basis for that fear.

>> reporter: but erin lawson believes an ekg saved her son's life. >> three months later he had open heart surgery. since then he's recovered and he's fine. >> reporter: he goes to the same high school as eric paredes. >> very upsetting when we found out he was going to have open heart surgery. but the opposite was what if we never did that? you know? we could have found out by him, you know, dying on the baseball field or the soccer field. >> one difficulty in this debate is a lack of concrete statistics. they are tracking sudden cardiac death among young people. for now the advice is speak with your pediatrician. >> thank you. here is dr. alano levine. good to see you. let's get right to it. it seems like a no brainer. why is the medical community split on this issue?

>> any time we lose a child, it's an unimaginable tragedy. i advocate for more research in the area how to prevent sudden cardiac deaths. before we recommend screening, we need a test that's going to be sensitive so it doesn't miss anyone. specific so it doesn't falsely identify anyone. and easily and readily accessible. >> you have two kids who play competitive sports. >> i do. >> have they been tested? >> they haven't. i recommend visiting your pediatrician. you want to make sure there's not a family history of anything suspicious and you do specific physical examines for these things. if there's any risk factors, do on ekg. >> if an ekg even shows an abnormality, wouldn't that be worth it alone? >> the problem is they do show abnormalities in normal children. so if we do these mass screenings, we're going to take so many children off the playing field and out of sports us

live. tomorrow mark ruffalo will be here. keira good morning, everyone. 8:26. i'm scott mcgrew. a busy off-ramp in san francisco looks like it's going to be closed until at least 10:00 this morning. investigators are marking every piece of evidence in this deadly car crash. the chp tells us this car was stolen, officers had been chasing it all the way from oakland. the car may have been going 130 miles an hour and it tried to take the fifth street off-ramp and crashed and burst into flames. both people in the car died at the scene. so that is still closed, that exit. but let's check the latest with mike iknnouye. >> this is the san mateo bridge, a hazy look. a clear view once you're on the span, but here's the bay bridge itself, and that's the closure you're talking about, the fifth street off-ramp. the distraction by that closure

weight, and a possible in between childbirth. >> those are some of the latest health headlines to hear about. >> to break them down is assistant professor of medicine at nyu. and sampson davis. doctors, good morning to you. so the weight loss pill. any time you hear news of a weight loss pill, where do you begin? is it a good thing or a great thing? >> it's too early to tell. they looked at 120 patients who took the pill. we notice when you take the pill, you take it with water and it's an expansion within the stomach and causes you to eat less. so when they look at the studies of those who took the pill and those who didn't, they saw only a small change in weight loss. >> you have to drink a lot of water, they said. >> i think that's probably the biggest, you know, thing on this study. was that the study participants were drinking half a liter of

water each time they took a capsule before a meal. >> that would fill you up anyway. >> exactly. the way the capsule works is it contains substances that the drug company is not disclosing what exactly they are. they swell to roughly 100 times your size. >> does that give you concern they don't tell you what's in it? >> right. the 2% increase in weight loss is a modest effect. and one said this is probably not going to be a game change per. >> there were side effects too. flatulence, cramping, diarrhea. >> remember that one that caused an oily discharge? who needed that? interesting study finding which who are able to naturally have children later in life tend to live longer. big surprise? >> not necessarily surprising. i think a couple of very important points here. this is women who are naturally able to conceive after the age of 33.

so this is not postponing childbearing until later. that there's any sort of health benefit to that. there's some idea that there may be some genetic variance that contributes to a woman's longevity and maybe her reproductive health and ability to have children later could be a marker for overall slower aging. this is a preliminary study. i think it's very interesting. this shouldn't send a signal saying if you weren't able to have a child after a certain age, you're definitely not going to live longer than the rest of us. i think it's an interesting finding. it's purely an observation. >> the good thing with this variance is the women are believed to pass them to the offspring. we see a possibility in longevity being developed and carried forward. we saw that women who had children at the age of 40 had a four times likelihood of reaching the age 100. >> golly. all right.

from living long to gluten. we all know the gluten-free craze is everywhere. but there's new studies that say maybe that's not the best way to eat. >> so gluten, the thing is gluten, some people have sensitivity or allergy to gluten. it destroys the intestine lining. the misconception is it's a healthier diet. tough keep in mind that gluten is a part of rye, wheat, and barley. when you swipe out gluten, you've got to replace it with something. sometimes replacing it with carbohydrates and you're getting more calories instead of less. then the marketing companies, they're sort of jumping on the bandwagon and promoting it. you think it's better for you. but you have to look and see what's in the products you're consuming. >> obviously for somebody that doesn't have an allergy. >> numbers to keep in mind. the presence of celiac disease

taking a look at the headlines now. a new study is suggesting 3d mammograms may be a good weapon in the battle against breast cancer. the study in the journal medical aso association shows doctors were able to detect 40% more invasive cancers when women were screened with both the 3d mammograms and digital screenings rather than digital screenings alone. women who had both were also less likely to get false positives. people with insomnia may get tired a lot, but they apparently will not automatically get high blood pressure as a lot of people thought. about 30% of americans have trouble falling asleep or even staying asleep. a doctor who led a recent study found no link to hypertension and said patients suffering from insomnia should not worry about

because we -- what i've learned from watching the movie is that marriage is difficult. what did you learn from meeting with all of these couples? >> yeah. i mean, it's -- you learn everything. i mean like it's a documentary filmmaker, you always look at other people's lives and, you know, project on to them and it's just, you know, so unique to be given this kind of intimate access into it. what did i learn? i've been married 28 years. >> yeah. >> i know what kind of work it is. i wanted to celebrate the work that goes into it, rather than make it seem like that's a bad thing. >> now to janice and alexander. you guys didn't have a marriage ceremony the first time around. you had like a partnership ceremony. you decided to up the ante and go for the wedding itself. why was that important for you guys? >> go ahead. >> a great husband already. >> i like him. >> you go. >> okay. >> well the first one was the large ceremony. >> yeah. >> it was the one that we felt
