good morning. i'm dara brown. world cup fever has captured america. the u.s. men's soccer team advancing to the round of 16 despite losing to germany 1-0. a loss that is really a win for the game and for the fans. nbc's curt gregory has more. >> reporter: even before kickoff soccer fans gathered around the country to cheer on the u.s. men in their world cup match against germany. >> it's amazing to see people from everywhere gathering in support of their team. >> reporter: from chicago to charlotte. new york to the nation's capital. from the east coast to the west. >> everyone can get behind the u.s. and are having a great time and enjoying the game. >> reporter: with a single goal by germany, this game didn't turn out quite like everyone had hoped, but it didn't really feel

like a loss at all. >> this is a very tough group that we're playing in. everyone doubted us. you know, we pulled lou. we're going in. >> reporter: even in defeat, the u.s. team moves on. >> we got through, and so we still have a hands to win the world cup. >> i have complete faith that u.s. will take it all the way. >> reporter: faith in a team that's making believers across the country. curt gregory, nbc news. >> the u.s. will play belgium. game time july 1st at 4:00 p.m. new overnight hollywood actor shia la buff was arrested at a broadway show. he was allegedly being disruptive during a performance of cabaret at the studio 54 theater. the transformer star was reportedly smoking inside the theater and slapping people at random. he was escorted out of the theater in handcuffs during the intermission. he also lettened police and was spit telling officers. he was charged with disorderly

conduct and criminal trespass. he has made headlines for his various antics. earlier this year he ported a paper bag over his head that read i am not famous anymore during a red carpet event. reaction is pouring in this morning after the supreme court issued two major rulings on thursday. first the high court decided to strike down a massachusetts law that was intended to limit protests outside abortion clinics. the state had previously passed a law saying there should be no protest within 35 feet of clinic entrances. the court's decision to get rid of the buffer zone put them in jeopardy. >> the law worked well and maintained public safety at our health centers, so it is a disappointment. >> the obama administration, which had argued in defense of the buffer zone law, released a statement following the decision saying, in part, "while the court disagreed on this specific law, we are pleased that their ruling was narrow and that they recognize the possibility of alternative approaches, such as

a federal law protecting a woman's right to access reproductive health clinics." abortion clinics are hailing it as a victory saying that the first amendment is for everyone. a second ruling scaled back the president's ability -- the issue arose in 2012 after the president appointed three nominees on a labor board without senate confirmation. the high court says the president does not have the power to make appointments during a senate recess of ten days or more. now virtually everyone on capitol hill agreed. house republicans killed the bill by not bringing it up for a vote, but the white house suggests president obama may act on his own. nbc's tracie potts reports from washington. >> reporter: democrats and republicans blame eric cantor's surprise loss. cantor was willing to let children of immigrants stay in the u.s., but his opponent used

that against him, scaring off any other republican willing to compromise on immigration. >> their fear is greater than the reality, but they're quaking in their boots. >> reporter: even marco rubio, the son of immigrants who helped craft the compromise bill, doubts there's any middle ground now. >> we're not going to award 12 million people citizenship and round up and deport 12 million people. >> reporter: the compromise passed the senate but died in the republican-controlled house where leaders wouldn't bring it up for a vote. >> give us a sign. give us a vote. >> each day they don't act, each day they are killing it. >> reporter: the white house says despite the threat of a lawsuit over executive orders, president obama has no choice but to act. >> we're not just going to sit around and wait. we've been waiting a we're already. rirchlgt as lawmakers leave capitol hill with no action on immigration, president obama has asked homeland secretary swra

johnson to look into what this administration can do on its own. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. a marine pilot lands a plane without something very important. front landing gear. look at the nose of this plane. no front wheel. what did he use instead? a futuristic high-tech handy dandy stool. he is flying a harrier jet, and they can land vertically. it hovers about 23 feet above the deck, and he puts the plane's nose down with such precision. by the way, the ships carry stools like that for this very reason. that is amazing. and startling new statistics for heavy drurnkers. the studies by the center for disease control says that researchers found that binge drinking, drinking while underage or while pregnant was responsible for 88,000 deaths from 2006 and 2010 and that excessive drinking could reduce your life span by as much as 30

years. the study defines binge drinking as five or more drinks in one sitting for men and four or more forwomen. firefighters are battling to contain a massive wildfire that is sweeping across eastern arizona. the blaze has spread across more than 2,000 acres of land. the san juan fire is burning on the apache indian reservation. they say the windy conditions are fueling the fire. authorities are investigating the cause of that blaze. they say it began, in part, in the forest that is used by campers. nbc meteorologist bill karens is here with your friday forecast. let's hope it's a good one. >> i saw the stat yesterday come out from the national weather service that said this california -- they have a rainy season. they have the dry season. for the water year-to-date it's the second lowest on record. i mean, that's how unprecedented this dry spell is. that's how we have the horrendous drought conditions and i don't feel dangerous fire conditions. yesterday, though, we did get wet weather in the state of florida. we needed it.

we were try there too. still getting soaked. a few radar that goes there in northern california, but not much. most of the rain this morning is in the pacific northwest. if you are on i-5 this morning from portland northward, you are going to have periods of rainn to deal with. in the last 24 hours three inches of rain, that's a good cleansing rain out there. waters everything and cleans the air out. as we watch the system moving through, the weather will improve during your afternoon. the best chance of rain in the northwest will be this morning. will clear out in the intermountain west. salt lake city, denver included. good chance of thunderstorms. we continue slightly cooler than average in california and still very dry. that's your national forecast. now here's weather headed to many areas of the west next week. hot weather is going to be the key. this is our last june weekend. we start in july, and just like

video shows an attack on a police cruiser in michigan. oh. the suspect armed with a metal pipe jumped on the car's hood and smashed the windshield. police say the 20-year-old man appeared to be on drugs and told them he was from the planet voltron. he was arrested and charged with assault. elsewhere in michigan the missing boy found in a basement where police conducted three searches is out of the hospitals. nbc affiliate wdiv is reporting he may have feared punishment for stopping in the middle of an exercise routine. police are investigating. exploding watermelons and combusting mannequins. the fourth of july is a week from today, and the consumer product safety commission is using demonstrations to remind everyone of the dangers of fireworks. they say accidents cause eight deaths and more than 11,000 injuries in 2013. hirlg healthing's new book "hard choices" will not be sold in china. distributors effectively banned its sale. the memoir is critical of the
