it, they did pull out a victory, getting past the so-called group of death. they marched with the dedicated american fans. they traveled thousands of miles for this moment. they wouldn't let a few downpours or a daunting opponent kill their spirits. >> usa! >> reporter: tensions ran high from the opening seconds of the match. >> terrible conditions making it more challenging for the americans, but they're proving they've got a lot of grit and a lot of fight in this game. >> reporter: germany scored in the 54th minute. >> it is 1-0 to germany. >> reporter: and despite a few close chances in the closing minutes, the americans couldn't score. >> couldn't put it on target. >> reporter: the final, 1-0, but it doesn't matter. team usa finished second in the group and still advances. >> we might have lost, but we didn't lose the war. >> group of death, we made it! yeah!

>> reporter: back open, american fans were glued to the broadcast. in chicago, an estimated 20,000 people crowded into grant park to watch their team. fans were in a frenzy in hermosa beach, california. while in miami, some watched from at the office. >> come on. >> reporter: while others watched from the pool. and in the nation's capital, fans filled up dupont circle to watch, and some of our colleagues even kept up while at a congressional press conference. president obama watched the american team while on air force one. >> we could not be prouder of them. they are defeying the odds and earned a lot of believers in the process. >> the u.s. games in the world cup have actually done better on tv in america than both the nba finals and the world series. it's not just soccer fans now. now it's sports fans that are galvanizing and kind of becoming soccer fans. >> reporter: fans like this group at a soccer camp in birmingham, alabama, who took a break from practice to watch their idols. possible future stars dreaming

there? >> just excitement. i think we're all pretty drained. you know, it's been intense, as you can imagine. just excitement. really proud of each other, and it's a special moment when teams advance to the world cup because that's your first step. >> that rain was coming down so hard, pretty much throughout the entire game. i can't imagine standing in it much less trying to hold on to a slippery ball in it and hold back the germans. did it feel as relentless as it looked? >> i live in manchester. to be impressed by rain, it must be heavy. you know, it's just -- it just -- it makes you concentrate more, you know, when the elements are against you. you just focus in, and i think that helps, really. >> now, of course, as you know, the teams portugal and ghana were playing at the same time. and what happened there

ultimately ended up to be very consequential for team usa. is that something you guys find out on the field in realtime? do you know what's happening in that other game? did you know what the results there were meaning for you? >> i knew. you know, and a couple of the players knew. it varies. some guys don't want to know. the coach doesn't really want to tell us. we needed to find out because the result was so important and made a difference in our match. >> you know, tim, i will never be mistaken for a soccer expert, but watching the game yesterday, it seemed to me everything was falling on you. that german offense was just relentless. you had to save the ball multiple times. it felt like the camera was on you the whole time. what was going through your mind? >> again, trying to be ultra focused because as you said, it oftentimes does come down to the goalkeeper.

germany is a top team. they're probably the best team in the world, if not one of two. we knew we'd be tested as a defense. you know, i come into that role and try and play my part. it's a good feeling when the game's over. >> and very quickly, are you aware how big soccer is in the united states right now? i mean, these matches are being watched more than the world series, more than the nba playoffs. how does it feel knowing that there is such a huge swell of interest in this country? >> we've been blown away by the response, us players down here have seen everything through our families, social media, the things we get on tv down here. it's a true testament to how far soccer's come in this country. people are just excited. you know, leaving work early, you know, the country is stopping to watch us. and that's what they do all around the world. >> tim howard, it is a joy to watch. congratulations to you and the whole team and good luck on

tuesday. >> thank you. >> such a nice guy. >> talk about calm under pressure. >> exactly right. he had to be. let's get reaction now to a couple of key rulings by the supreme court. women's groups are figuring out new ways to shield patients who are walking into abortion clinics after the high court struck down a law thursday blocking protests at t entrances to those clinics. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. pete, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the court is surprisingly unanimous about one kind of protection for clinic patients, striking down a no-protest buffer zone around abortion clinic entrances in massachusetts. the justices said massachusetts violated the right of free speech by painting a line on the sidewalk 35 feet from abortion clinic entrances and banning protesters and even people who want to calmly try talking patients out of getting an abortion. >> what massachusetts did here, taking an open public sidewalk like this one and saying we're going to put people in prison if

they have conversations here, it's fundamentally against our constitution. >> reporter: women's groups say they'll do what they can to try to keep patients safe. >> we have people calling and e-mailing and volunteering to be escorts for our patients to make sure that they can come in to our health centers safely. >> reporter: in another decision, the court also said the senate can block a president's power to make appointments during congress at recesses as long as the senate doesn't take breaks longer than ten days, even brief pro formas will do the trick. >> stands in adjournment until may 30 tth, 2014. >> reporter: now the court has effectively killed the power to make recess appointments when the white house and senate are controlled by opposing political parties. all the senate has to do is keep having those pro forma sessions every three days. in the abortion protest case, the court said the massachusetts

law restricted free speech on a public sidewalk. the supreme court allows protests on the sidewalk in front of the court building but bans it on the large marble plaza in front. planned parenthood says that means the same court that denied them a buffer zone has one of its zone. we'll get the final decisions of the term on monday. matt? savannah? >> pete williams on two big decisions in washington this morning. pete, thanks very much. we've got tamron following the latest developments in iraq. >> good morning. iraqi government forces launched an airborne assault in the city of tikrit, the former hometown of dictator saddam hussein. richard engel is in baghdad with the very latest. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. the military offensive right now is centered on the city of tikrit where earlier this month a human rights group believed that islamic militants executed up to 190 iraqi soldiers. the fighting there now is intense. one helicopter at least crashed

under fire. sunni insurgents are tightening their hold on northern and western iraq. the government is desperate to keep them out of baghdad, deploying roughly 100,000 troops and soldiers in the capital. but it's unclear how effective all their checkpoints really are. iraqi forces still use a wand that supposedly finds am bos, even though it's been discredited as useless. do you believe that device works? >> yeah, but not 100%. it's worked, let's say, from 30 to 50%. >> reporter: brigadier general saud told us militants from isis are already in baghdad and that his men arrested two sleeper cells. did you find weapons? did you find -- >> we find, yes, some weapons and some devices. >> reporter: iraqi troops believe there are more cells still on the loose. it's increasingly clear that the iraqi military isn't going to be

able to take back by force the territory it's already lost. the only solution now is for a major political change that can bring all iraqis together. but that isn't looking likely either. prime minister maliki made it clear this week he won't step down, saying that would be against dhokcy. democracy. maliki is increasingly unpopular not only here in baghdad but nationwide. he is refusing to step down. however, we could see some changes, however, next week on tuesday when parliament meets, but still maliki says he won the election. he wants to form the new government even if he doesn't have a lot of credibility anymore. >> all right, richard engel, thank you very much. president obama has asked congress for $500 million to arm and train moderate syrian rebels. the train and equip mission would be overseen by the pentagon. the moderate rebels are battling both syrian forces and sunni extremists who are also overwhelming iraqi forces, as you just heard.

the bloody civil war in syria is now in its fourth year. actor shia la beouf is in hot water after being arrested thursday night during a broadway show. the picture was posted on twitter. take a look. new york city police say la beouf was allegedly disruptive during "cabaret" at the studio 54 theater. he was allegedly smoking and yelling during the performance. the "transformers" star was escorted out of the theater in handcuffs and taken to the police station for processing. and a touching moment in thursday night's nba draft. this is amazing. when lead commissioner adam silver took time out to recognize and honor isaiah austin, recently diagnosed with a syndrome. he's expected to be picked late in the first round, but his condition was discovered during genetic testing for the draft. it's a disorder that affects the

me included. i had the opportunity to meet up with olympic gold medal swimmer amy van dyken-rouen in colorado where she's at the hospital recovering from the atv accident that left her paralyzed. she talked to us exclusively. she talked about on the day of the accident not knowing if she would survive, she said her good-byes to her husband. when she woke up from surgery she was smiling, laughing, and ready for a new life. >> i am now paralyzed. i am now disabled. i am now a paraplegic. although i aim to not be one day, that's what i am. >> reporter: amy van dyken-rouen is a woman with an unbreakable spirit. we got the news of her tragedy just weeks ago. she was left paralyzed after a near-fatal atv accident. in the days since she's inspired many of us with her optimism and grace. >> and i'm so thankful tor alive. >> reporter: now amy takes on a new challenge undergoing intense

physical therapy. yet smiling through the pain. how long are you in here each day. >> i am working basically from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. i got hit hard, so we got to make sure we're good. that's all it is. then we're going to rom and roll. you know me. >> reporter: and we do. two-time olympian made history winning a total of six gold medals at the atlanta and sydney games. she lives in show low, arizona, with her husband tom rouen. a couple weeks ago they were out to dinner on a night much like any other when life took a dramatic turn. >> you don't remember a thing? >> i don't. we were having a great dinner at the country club and it was lovely. i had the trout. you had a hamburger. >> always. >> i remember getting up from my seat and that's where it ends. >> reporter: fill in the blanks for me, tom, between what she remembers standing up from dinner and what you then saw.

>> i went over it a thousand times in my head. she took off and i said that sounds like a lot of accelerator. and it was one second and she was over. yeah. it's a tough thing to get out of your mind. she wasn't moving. she wasn't breathing. >> reporter: is it hard to hear it? >> it's hard. not because i got hurt, but it's because what he had to see and do. for five days he didn't sleep, he didn't eat. he doesn't like to see me like this. >> reporter: amy had severed her spine and was air lifted to a level one trauma center in scottsdale. doctors rushed her to surgery. and the doctor was telling you how close he was going to have to go to your aorta and you might not survive surgery. and for some reason what jumped into your mind was tom. >> yes. yeah. i wanted to tell him that if i

don't make it, live your life and, you know, move on. >> reporter: and for you what was it like to hear those words come out of her mouth at that particular time? >> it was tough. and one of the things that i told her was if she wanted to -- if all this was too much and she wanted to go, she could go and i'd understoand. >> and that was tough to hear but it was also a challenge. >> reporter: here we go with the challenges. >> don't tell me i can't do something. don't tell me to give up. >> reporter: amy says she's found strength in her parents who have been by her side every day. at some point i would imagine the thought crossed both your minds that if anybody can get through this, it's our daughter amy. >> she's a strong girl. she's a really strong girl. >> she came out of surgery, we were there in the recovery room when she came out. she woke up and she saw us and

she said, dad, now i can race you in our wheelchairs. >> reporter: to walk again, she faces daunting odds but she's determined to make progress every day. >> where's the pain? >> in the incision site. but other than that, i'm lucky. if it would have been up a few vertebrae, i wouldn't have use of my hands. >> reporter: you love to set goals. what's your goal? >> my ultimate goal is in august to walk out of here. >> reporter: it's that fighting spirit that won her a shelf filled with olympic gold medals that she'll have to return to. your mom told me when you were a little girl, you sucked as a swimmer. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: yet you set your sights on becoming something special. and boy, did you. and so now you're setting your sights on something else special. >> yeah. exactly. because right now i suck at getting out of my chair. just like i sucked at swimming. but this is a new challenge. i'm taking it head on. i'm not afraid of it. i welcome it.

and this is more than just for a gold medal. this is for my life. our life. and so, you know, i'm here and i'm working as hard as i can. >> and since surgery she's been able to get some sensation moving a little bit below her belly button. she says it's sporadic but gives her hope she may regain some feeling in her legs some day. >> just to be in the presence of someone whose spirit is so strong is incredible. >> i watched her in that physical therapy room and there were other patients there with her families and you could tell they looked up to her. as they passed her in their wheelchairs, they'd say how are you, amy? she's amazing. >> her training really has helped her in her rehabilitation. >> she was in really good shape right before this happened. so she's got great upper body strength and that's helping her a lot. >> it's not like she's had months to reflect on this.

back at 8:18 now. more of our exclusive conversation with amy van dyken-rouen. she's the olympic gold medalist who was paralyzed earlier this month. i met her at craig hospital in englewood, colorado, where she spends most of her days undergoing intense physical therapy. i asked amy what's the hardest part for her. >> everything. the hardest thing is everything. they teach you everyday life, how to, you know, sit down on an airplane seat, how to get into a car. things that a lot of us take for granted. it's very hard. but i can't feel from here down. it's a lot of work. >> what was it like being back in the pool? >> it was great. >> mixed emotions though? >> mixed emotions because it was the first time that i felt, quote, unquote normal. this is not normal for me yet.

it's spectacular. >> thank you. thank you so much. >> how about this next story? >> gosh. so matt lauer had the opportunity to interview olympic swimmer amy van dyken ru-rouedy. recently, less than a month ago she was a in a near-fatal atv accident in arizona specifically june 6th this happened. it left her paralyzed from the waist down. they just left dinner when the accident happened. she gave the details of what happened. but what came out of this story is a woman who is courageous. she's an inspiration. she's never given in despite what's ahead of her. she said she still feels lucky. she sat down with matt, both her and her husband tom. take a listen. >> it was tough. you know, but -- and one of the things i told her was if she wanted to -- if all this was too much and she wanted to go, she could go.

a very good morning to you. it is 9:26 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. jurors from los angeles deliberating today about whether the dodgers are responsible for the beating of giants fan, bryan stow. stowe was left brain damaged by a beating outside of dodgers' stadium three years ago and will require around-the-clock care for the rest of his life. the lawsuit claims the dodgers did not provide enough security at the stadium. we could hear from the bay area man believed to be the mastermind behind two websites. investigators say that advertised prostitution. the websites have since been shut down by the fbi. he was arrested earlier this week, accused of running a site and another from his mountain view home. both allegedly allowed people to find escorts and review strip clubs. lawyers think he may enter a
