good morning. coming up on "early today" deadly weather across parts of the u.s. as extreme conditions persist. we'll tell you what's ahead for today. israel retaliates for the death of three teenagers. ukraine says they want a cease-fire. they're prepared to hit the rebels, and president obama sending hundreds more troops and military equipmentnto iraq. it's win or go home for the u.s. men's national soccer team, but could the choice of ref already decided america's fate? the first half of 2014 is over. today is july 1st, and "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm richard lui.

there's been no letup from the wave of severe and dangerous weather. in des moines people ran for cover as the weather took a dramatic turn there. heavy rain filling streets with rushing water. authorities in cedar rapids, iowa, searching right now for a 17-year-old swept into a storm sewer drain. rescuers combing a nearby lake. in fairfax, iowa, a building collapse under violent wind killing one man. then the ominous sky over north branch, iowa, swirling clouds hovering on saturday. flash flooding swallowing two vehicles near cedar rapids. no injury there. mother nature has put on a spectacular light show in eastern kansas as well. that led to a tornado that downed trees and power lines. meanwhile, the first tropical depression of 2014, hurricane season is forming off of florida. it's expected to become arthur later today. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season. meteorologist bill karins has more in just a few minutes. stick around for that. the white house is adding

300 more troops to its forces in iraq twrsh will help enforce security at the u.s. embassy, baghdad airport, and help protect u.s. citizens. the total number of u.s. troops in iraq will now be about 750. this as the u.n. says this morning june was the deadliest month in iraq in seven years. over 2,400 iraqis dead. most were civilians. here's nbc's richard engel on the group behind all that violence. ♪ >> reporter: isis militants have land, weapons, and ammunition, and u.s. officials are now very worried. several counterterrorist officials tell nbc news the threat from isis to american interests is "extremely high." they say isis is developing advanced bomb making skills and cultivating a roster of foreign suicide bombers who could target the u.s. and europe, and they're bragging about it.

isis puts out daily propaganda, videos showing its brutal attacks. the videos can't be independently verified, but the intentions are clear. >> we are going for you, barack obama. >> the holy grail for these groups are to strike in the west. attacks in london, attacks in the united states, this is what they strive for and more and more this is a concern of u.s. intelligence. >> there is one saving grace. isis, savage and intolerant, is generally losing support wherever it goes. in a baghdad mosque iraqi shiites expressed disdain for the group. they are hated, says this man, and many sunnis agree. but hated or not, isis has carbed out a safe haven in the heart of the middle east that may now be the most dangerous terrorist sanctuary in the world. >> nbc's richard engel reporting for us there. we will attack, and that's

the message from ukraine's president. he said this after a fragile ten-day cease-fire that pro-russian separatists expired monday. he told other world leaders rebels had not fulfilled the conditions of the cease-fire. the country's foreign ministry says 24 ukrainian service men were killed since the cease-fire began june 20th. benjamin netanyahu says hamas will pay for the deaths of three israeli teens. sirz of rocket strikes have been launched at gaza, which is controlled by the palestinian militant group hamas. this comes after searchers found the bodies of the teens missing for two weeks. officials believe the boys were abducted by hamas operatists. hamas has not claimed responsibility. they were hitchhiking home from school june 12th when they disappeared. their bodies found monday in the west bank not far from where they went missing. netanyahu, and israel's president simon peres are expected to attend a joint funeral today.

today is the day. again, team usa causing the nation to go ga ga for the world cup. it's a sudden death match in the round of 16 against belgium. so far undefeated. the u.s. head coach says, though, today's referee choice not good because the ref can speak french with the belgium players and he is from algeria, a country the u.s. beat four years ago. nbc's jay gray is live outside soldier field in chicago where a massive viewing party is being held later today. jay, you're very subtle about who you are rooting for. >> reporter: yeah. i'm totally independent as a journalist here. no, richard. i'm not going to lie. plus, when else could i wear this shirt? last week almost 20,000 people were in grant park here in chicago. organizers say this week they expect even more at soldier field to cheer on an underdog american team that continues their unlikely run through this world cup.

[ chanting i believe that we will win ] >> reporter: with a lot of excitement and a bit of success and some pretty bold expectations as the american team squares off against belgium later today. >> most likely we'll be playing argentina after that, and i think that will be a thrilling game as well. i definitely see a chance of us getting out of the 16, out of the eight, and even winning the four. >> that's maybe a bit ambitious for a team that wasn't expected to get out of group play, but what team usa lacks in soccer history and prestige, they make up for with an enthusiastic and growing group of fans. >> we waited four years for this. look at this american soccer. look around this place. american soccer is growing. >> i'm now a die hard football fan. i'll tell you that much. >> reporter: the u.s. team has captured the attention of a nation in a country that loves a winner. >> this teams was placed in the

so-called group of death, and when they won that first game against ghana and clearly had a chance to survive that and make the knockout round, i think the interest racheted up a whole lot. reactions are pouring in on the supreme court's ruling that some corporations can refuse to pay for certain forms of contraception. hobby lobby is now free to drop emergency morning after pills and other forms of birth control. the company is not objecting to the cost of covering viagra and vasectomies for male employees, though. steve handelsman has more for us. >> reporter: outside court religious rights activists cheered the ruling. >> a landmark decision for religious freedom. >> american families do not lose their fundamental right when they open a family business. >> reporter: for profit corporation, hobby lobby, and -- whose religious owners oppose contraception sued over the obama care mandate that employers provide free birth control. by 5-4 liberals versus

close look at an immense whale this weekend, but some say they were too close. the law requires surfers stay a football field away. they're on top of the massive creature itself. now to business. good morning to you, morgan. >> gm announces that six more recalls affecting 8.4 million vehicles with 7.6 million in the u.s. now, most of the cars are older models and being recalled for ignition switch issues. gm is aware of seven crashes, eight injuries, and three deaths. the company has now recalled nearly 29 million vehicles this year, but it's been a great week for gopro. shares of the video camera maker have soared, get this, 60% since the ipo on thursday. that's benefitted founder and ceo nick woodman and the company is now worth about $2 billion. ford f-150's top cars.com's american made index.

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, 4:30 in the morning, ooichl scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. new video this morning of what was left behind after an overnight fire. broke out in san jose near interstate 280 and bird avenue. crews headed to the scene about 1:30 this morning after getting calls of trees on fire. a few trees burned along with debris. the fire was knocked down quickly. no word yet on a cause. now this comes as san jose firefighters are coming from an exhausting day yesterday. two brush fires had crews scrambling to gain the upper hand overnight. just six miles away, much larger
