your commute direction right as you approach 98. here's the 98th avenue onramp, you see a number of vehicles there. the onramp is closed. avoid that, use haguenburger or 66, look at the maps, we'll show you the back-up as we approach the area. use davis, because there's the back-up, here's your alternate, san leandro or international boulevard takes you past the coliseum. north of 0e6, you are clear of the incident. 580 we saw earlier slowing, that has cleared up, we'll have the rest of your commute coming up. its been a long night meanwhile for san jose firefighters who were spread thin dealing with several fires. the latest happened near interstate 280 in bird in san jose which burned dangerously close to houses on hannah court. crews headed to the scene after getting calls of trees on fire. now you can see a few trees burned along with a bunch of junk that caused the fire under investigation. across town, crews spent the night monitoring hot spots after

two fires in south san jose had people running from their homes. that's where we find "today in the bay's" chris san -- kris sanchez, everything back to normal today? >> reporter: i wouldn't call it back to normal certainly scott, but you don't have the see the flames to feel the urgency here. folks waking up to this, caution tape blocking the driveways along with a fire house still leading up into the dry hills behind their homes. this was an active scene late into the night as crews watched for hot spots, but the good news, no homes burned at this fire and took off through dry brush. fueled by wind and hot temperatures. the fire did go to four alarms and as you mentioned earlier, it was not the only fire taxing resources. fire crews fought from the air with helicopters from the air and on the ground, two firefighters were injured. we're still trying to find out the extent of the injuries. for the folks who live near this

fire, it felt like that fire was a lot closer and a lot more dangerous. >> we got to get out of here in five minutes. we have some dogs and it was a little heroing. we're going to adding extra companies for the 456th during peak hours. hopefully that'll be enough of a deterrent for folks not to the utilize personal fireworks. >> reporter: knew fire was visible from highways 85 and 101 and i was driving up through the central valley yesterday on highway 152 near the area and saw another one. . doesn't take ano carrierringrin0

zbrr a 19-year-old and two 16-year-olds, one of whom holds a dual israeli-american citizenship were kidnapped on june 129. they were hitchhiking home from wherever they were studying at jewish seminaries. overnight the israeli army launched air strikes at nearly three dozen targets in gaza including a house in the west bank of one of two people suspected of killing the three teens. israeli security agency says those two suspects work with the extreme islamic military group

hamas as activists near hebron where they were last spotted. a palestinian with hamas was shot dead after he threw a grenade at forces. the families are holding wakes. they were set to start around 4:30 this morning our time. they are also holding funerals later this morning. israeli military spokesman says more than 20 rockets were fired into israel since late wednesday. a lot happening, we are anticipating israel's next move, although we understand the military is on pause as the families mourn their loss. scott and laura. zblunsable, thank you very much, steph. meanwhile this morning, today marks 21 years since the gunman stormed a high-rise office building in san francisco and killed eight people. it was and still is the worst mass shooting in the city's history. it's known by the address, 101 california shootings. disgruntled law client killed eight, injured six before taking

his own life. last week, several survivors of the shooting were honored alongside former congresswoman gabby gifford for their work in preventing gun violence. oakland police hope to publicly shame people who get arrested on related charges. department launch ds a website that'll show mug shots of people who were being pimped or purchasers. they are arrested with prostitutes or those who benefit from it in addition to pictures, the site will provide their names, birthdays, and where they live. there have been 15 pictures posted. a number of new laws are now object books in california including one making it easier for transjenldered people to change their name. the law eliminates the requirement that people must publish their name change in a newspaper before seeking a court order for it. there's a new law aimed at protecting renters as well as all battery-operated smoke alarms. they must now have a

non-replaceab non-replaceable, non-removable ten-year battery. putting restrictions on when you will hear the leaf blowers being used. today on ban on gas. powered employeers goes into effect. the leaf blowers will be banned on sundays and holidays. limited hours people can use them for the rest of the week. and the definition of family under family paid leave expanded. it now includes seriously ill siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and parents-in-law. workers can receive parable wage benefits whield under leave. it is going to get loud and noisy as soccer fans show their support for team usa. later today the team takes on belgium in the round of 16 in the world cup. so this is win or go home time. the coast. along the coast at noon, then the evening, low clouds surge in once again. so, coastal clouds and misty skies, that's the story for the morning, for the afternoon, sunshine inland and highs inland today, 80s and 90s. a little more comfortable for our friends in the tri-valley an area south of san jose as we see in the warmer spots today close to 90 around morgan hill. 83 in san jose. you can see the five-day forecast bricking the temperatures down through thursday. rebounding some as we head towards the weekend, san francisco, mid-60s. and here's another one of the hottest spots yesterday. pleasanton about dloes 100 yesterday. today near 91 degrees dropping off into the mid-80s thursday into friday. temperatures climbing up into the low 90s. check in of your morning commute, let's go over to mike. >> rob, we're looking at the deadly crash investigation which continues northbound 880 right before you get to 98th. it's tough to make out because of an overcrossing here.

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back everyone, live look outside at oakland this morning. that's because there's two lanes blocked, northbound 880 right before 94th avenue after a deadly crash. mick inouye with l join us with an update of when the road will completely reopen. traffic is backed up right now. he'll also have a look at work arounds coming up next. college is apparently on the market. battled college has decided to sell and announce tonight which will be sold and which ones will

be shut down. heald has three campuses in the area. crittenton yan is under investigation for altering grades and attendance. well let's check the markets this morning as we wait for the bell and let's talk to morgan brennan live at cnbc world headquarters, good morning morgan. >> reporter: futures are higher after a mixed session on monday, however, the markets closed out the second quarter on a high note. the dow is up for four straight quarters while the broader s&p 500, that's the best street since 1998. today we're getting data own manufacturing and construction spending. the dow falling 25 points to 16826, the nasdaq rising ten to 14088. the companies are having a hard time finding skilled workers in science, tech, engineering, and maps. the brookings institute says employs are advertising jobs longer norpd to fill the

positions in the field. the more education needed and higher the pay, the longer it took to actually fill the job, scott, back to you. >> all right morgan, thank you much. new video of a massive flooding in brazil. the water pouring in over the falls from all directions. about 50,000 people forced to abandon their homes in southern brazil. some buildings completely submerged by flood waters. more than 20d town -- 20 towns declared a state of emergency. in the meantime, let's check the opposite with rob, we have fires and dry and hot. >> too much heat and wind and dry conditions yesterday really causing problems. this morning at least we're seeing improvement in the form of a stronger sea breeze which will drop temperatures inland into the 80s and lower 90s. so we should be well away from 100 degree temperatures and outside right now as you look across the bay from the east bay over to san francisco, you can actually see some low clouds and a little bit of fog there in and

around san francisco right now. we're seeing about 58 degrees there and around the east bay over towards the tri-valley, 1i6r right now with mainly clear skies. so, we have a stronger sea breeze out there which is going to bring some cooling. we see the wind speeds in and around san francisco. and over towards emeryville right now. you have the northwest winds at close to 12, so that coupled with the low clouds will make for a cooler day later on. patchy low cloud and mist for the coastline. inland clearing skies, but continued cloudy out on the coast. inland temperatures running in the 80s to lower 90s, but the winds will be picking up once again right after 4:00 from about 15 to 30d miles per hour. we have a weather system that's passing by, that could toss thundershowers off to the north and east. look at how the low clouds will stay locked in, briefly clearing around santa cruz this afternoon and evening, as we head towards tonight and tomorrow morning, we will see a chance of misty skies at times, some of the low

clouds. but the culprit for the big heat we saw over the last four days has broken down. it's going to move back to the desert southwest and as a trough of low pressure hangs out to the north, the cooler temperatures we're seeing today back down into the low to mid0u around san jose, upper 60s, closer toe san francisco and into the north bay and towards the tri-valley highs in the 80s and 90s and the trend should hold up as we go through the next few days. we can see the temperatures around livermore staying in the 80s as we finish off the week and climbing back in the low 90s as we get near the start of next weekend. here's mike. folks we need to start off with this, this is a deadly crash block half of the freeway northbound 880 at 98th. there's the avenue onramp, there's your traffic backing up on your map shapes up like this with the speed sen source flowing right about davis street. marina, there's a hit and run reported. the slowing again starts at davis street where you can get

over towards san leandro or international boulevard if you want to try those alternates to the west, doolittle towards haganburger, both north of coliseum, getting you past the scene. big rigs are allowed on 580, allow a different traffic flow. now the statement is about -- estimate is about 6:30 when the lanes will be open. we'll hope for earlier opening. toll plaza in the approach, we have back-up in the cash lean lanes off to the left. we're looking towards the rest of the commute, nice, easy drive. we're going end to with the maps and showing you the rest of the bay moving smoothly. the earlier delays we had have restored. no more between daily city. the rest of the system running on time there, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it is 5:20 right now. palo alto police are looking for help finding a luxury car stolen off of city streets. officer tell the palo alto daily news a bentley was parked on

stanley avenue for almost a month. the owner went out to the get it on friday and discovered it was gone. if you haven't seen it, the car looks like this one, but it's a convertible. police say it is so distinctive they are hoping someone will notice it and give them a call. officers are looking for a blue, 2013 bentley continental gtc. lines plate of -- license plate of 6 zvp 247. why the owner didn't use the car for several weeks is the question. oakland mayor jean kwaun has insurance. the crash happened in the east oakland area last month. cell phone video showing the aftermath. the other driver says kwaun was on her cell phone and ran a red light, kwaun denies that report. lovely's attorney says kwaun still hasn't provided her insurance information. the mayor's office says kwaun has been working with the other driver and her attorney to move things along. another round of mosquito

fogging takes place in the south bay tonight. fogging will be down in the area on your screen, it covers parts of campbell and san jose after mosquitos with the west nile virus were discovered in the area. fog willing start at 11:00 tonight and it will last several hours. and the san rafael public library doing something unique, bamboo library cards. starting today, the library cards will be offered instead of old plastic ones. handed out for free. they're made of renewable bamboo. they're reportedly just as durable as plastic. the san rafael library says the first in the world to issue these kind of cards. >> i think that's cool. >> very cool. 5:22, update on the kitten that took a 30 mill mile ride under the hood of a bay area car next.

the bay." welcome back everyone, it's 5:24 right now live look at sap center in san jose this morning. the nhl free agency opens at 9:00 this morning, sharks general manager doug wilson says the team is in a rebuilding mode after the epic collapse in the playoffs against the l.a. kings in april. that means they're looking for younger players and possibly offloading some veterans. nba's free agent market is now open late last night. update to that kitten we told you about that took a wild ride in the south bay, the man who found the kitten under the hood of the car says someone has volunteered to give it a good home. he tells us it's a family that lives nearby was planning to adopt a few kitten in a few months. they were so moved by the story, they decided just to get that kitten now. the man tried to find the kitten's owner, but had no luck. nice little home. got to the think of a good name for it i would imagine. rob's in for christina this morning. he has a look at perfect forecast.

>> it is perfect if you like the cooler temperatures right now gorgeous start to the morning in san francisco. you can see the low clouds there at 58 degrees and as we go through the afternoon today, look at the temperatures around the bay now, san jose close to 83 degrees, upper 60s closer to san francisco and cooler changes for the tri-valley, highs close to 90 and we'll continue to see cooling as we head into the beginning of this upcoming weekend. now for a check of the morning commute, here's mike. >> good morning. folks i have to let you know about this. this continuing closure for you two right lanes approaching the oakland coliseum. this is 98th avenue, i'm noticing the onramp doesn't see traffic, at least few cars. consider using the 66 onramps north of the coliseum to stay clear of the activity in any of the changes that continue. we see the traffic bogging down on the picture, it's hard to see, there are flairs here blocking the two right lanes. now the maps will show you it's slow coming out of san leandro or international again are your alternates to get around than 580 also allowed for big rigs. we'll see a change of traffic

two of your major freeway oakland freeways coming up. the president has harsh words for congress after it fames to pass comprehensive immigration reform. what the commander in chief is now promising. and we're seeing a cool start with numbers mostly in the 50s outside and thanks to a stronger sea breeze, cooler changes ahead. closer look at that coming up in just a couple minutes. and let's take a live look outside this morning, golden gate bridge, look at the lights alum natoed, counting the cars on this tuesday, it's the first of july, this is "today in the bay". from nbc bay area, dhz -- this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. we begin with breaking news. two lanes of northbound interstate 880 in oakland closed because of a deadly crash. right now the two right lanes, part of the 98th avenue onramp as well closed as investigators

gather evidence at the scene. a crash between a coca-cola truck and a motorcycle happened about an hour ago. and about five minutes mike inouye will have the latest on traffic conditions and detours. san jose firefighters were already stretched thin when they were called to another fire this morning. we have video of what is left after a fire broke out near interstate 280 and burn avenue around 1:30. the trees in the area caught fire and briefly threatened a number of homes. the fire luckily was put out quickly. in the men time, crews are still on the scene this morning of another house fire in san jose, and that's where we find "today in the bay's" kris sanchez. she's in the neighborhood, good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. this. morning we can hear the birds chirps there. the trees behind us, but yesterday it was quite a chaotic scene as fire crews rush to this neighborhood and folks were kind of caught off guard. the scene was late active into the night. or active late into the night as

i should say, the good news is no homes burned in the fire that started at 1:30 and took off through dry brush, fanned by wind and hot temperatures. the fire did go to four alarms, as you mentioned earlier, it was not the only one to tax fire resources yesterday. fire crews fought the fire from the air will helicopters on the ground though, two firefighters were injured for the folks who live neither 125 acre fire. it felt a lot bigger and closer and firefighters are reminding people to be ready to leave, evacuate when they have to, but for one family, it was too unreal to believe. >> we need to evacuate right now. the house might burn down. >> mom, you have to go, i'm not going, we haven't had dessert yet. we'll have ice cream, and we're going to have it. >> i think -- >> reporter: i think sometimes it doesn't feel real. it was visible from 85 to 101. i saw another one from southern california on highway 152. obviously a lot of fire

resources being taxed all around the bay area and beyond. now the fire department is warning people not to set up fireworks illegal or otherwise. the fire, the san jose police department also echoing that same concern. though the these folks probably not going to be need to be told more than once. you can see the dry brush on the hillside right behind their homes. you can also see that the fire hoses are still connected to the fire hydrant there in the distance and there's caution tape. so again, these folks will not have to be reminded more than once likely as it got very real, very fast here in san theresa yesterday. reporting live in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> i saw the smoke, thanks so much, kris. crews are also out at the golf course on capitol expressway near 101. firefighters from mown view, palo alto were called out to help. the course back nine stayed open, and some golfers played right through. crews stayed on the scene

overnight just to watch for hot spots. now to a developing story. israel's military launched multiple attacks this morning. they come after the discovery of three dead israeli teenage teenagers who were kidnapped more than two weeks ago. stephanie chuang live in the newsroom with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning, scott. strong words from prime minister benjamin netanyahu who blamed hamas for the deaths of those three teens. hamas quote will pay. 19-year-old and two 16-year-olds and one of whom has a dual israeli-american citizenship were kidnapped on june 12th. they had been hitchhiking home after studying at jewish seminaries of hebron. defense official says it appears they were not not long after they were abducted. overnight the army launched air strikes at nearly fly dozen targets in gaza including this house in the west bank. it reportedly belongs to one of two people suspected of killing those teens. israeli's security agency says

those two suspects have been working at activists for hamas near hebron where the teens were last seen. of a grenade was thrown at forces in the middle of carrying out an arrest raid. hamas leaders denied responsibility. though they praised the kidnappings and claimed responsibility for kidnapping israelis before. large groups of israelis have paid their respects and be with the families. this morning those families were set to hold wakes at 4:30 this morning our time with separate funerals for boys later this morning. israeli leaders are resuming forces after the families grieve and mourn. hamas spokesman was warning it will quote open the gates of held should the israeli military continue to target gaza. a very vulnerable and volatile situation. we'll be keeping up with it of course. >> peace talks a distant memory, thank you very much. state laws going into

effect. mountain view is banning those styrofoam containers, restaurants can no longer package them in the foam and retailers cannot sale ice foam chests. large capacity gun magazines goes into effect today. it is now illegal to make, import, sell, or even lend a gun magazine that hold more than ten rounds at the time. and state's minimum wage goes from $8 an hour to $9 an hour. the state will increase minimum wage again in 2016 to $10 an hour. it will only affect some bay area stays, others have higher wanls. san francisco pace $10.74 an hour. in san jose, the minimum wage is 10.15 per hour. if you take the golden gate ferry, cough up more cash for the ride. the ferry and the golden gate transit regional bus fares are

increasing. 25 to 506 cents depending on how far you travel, but the marine county local bus fare and the giants sfer ri fare will not not go up. fares will state same for ac transit passengers, but there is a new way to pay today to get on the bus. starting today, you can buy full day passes for adults. this wlamtds paper transfers. the passes are good for unlimited local rides all day. they cost $5 for adults, $2.50 for children or seniors with disabilities. if you don't buy a day pass, you have to buy a full fare. there are no more transfers. >> plan ahead and get a day pass, ride until your heart's content. let's check in with rob, he has a look at the forecast, go for a walk. >> it would be nice for that. yesterday maybe not so much around the dry valley. temperatures soord up to about 105, 106 around livermore yesterday. this morning there are signs of cooling out there. you can find them around san

francisco, tri-valley clear, but sfog off to the west and we're seeing that closer to the east bay. the view showing you the low clouds and here's a view just outside at&t park this morning over at mccovey cove, if you're heading out to the early evening game, chilly. 60 degrees. strong sea breeze as the clouds fill on in and it's the ocean air-conditioning today that's going to keep things misty near the coastline. start the cooldown inland locations by about five to ten degrees. cloudy clout the coast, valley temperatures 80s to low 90s. the low clouds really entrenched on the coastline and we will continue to see them staying fairly mild i think as we go through the next 24 to 48 hours. you can see all the low clouds today. sunshine inland, it's going to be cooler today. 83 in san jose, mid to upper 60s closer to san francisco, into the north bay we'll see highs near 80 in santa rosa. you can see the tri-valley cooling down, away from the cool temperatures today, low 90s and the trend should hold up next five days, lir mor dropping into

the 80s as we finish off the workweek. and the numbers rebound. now for a check of your morning commute once again, here's mike. still a mess as you're approaching the oakland coliseum. this is why, we've had a deadly crash investigation which continues to have the right two lanes closed. as you're approaching 880, that's your commute direction. i've turned the camera. they are approaching the coliseum, 98th avenue, the onramp has been asktd fwhi as well. duo see a couple vehicles have cleared. the flairs still there. you are jammed up from davis street. if you're heading to oakland airport, get off the ramp, that'll take you to the airport, it's a short distance. san leandro street and international boulevard are issued as you can get over to the east of the freeway. those will get you past the scene. 580 they're allowing big rigs. expect a different traffic flow. the rest of the bay looks standard. south bay showing its first blips for 101 at 680. tri-valley no surprises there.

"today in the bay's" tracy potts live on capitol hill, tracy the president's words come as one california town is doing with its inflex of immigrants, they're fighting back. >> reporter: right scott, down south near san diego saying no thank you to waves of 140 immigrants. they're starting today, they want to process them as a border patrol station down there because stlost many in texas. texas county handle them all. they have detentions full of kids that are overflowing. the obama administration trying to deal with this, but congress won't budge. in fact they're already on brake light now, privately the president say john boehner told them there's nothing that's going to happen on immigration reform this year. the president wants to take this into his own hands. he's asking the attorney general and the secretary of homeland security to come up with some options, things that he can do legally on his own without congress passing a law to stem the flow of immigrants coming

into this country. the president says that he also wants to take a look at people who come in recent immigrants coming into this country, but also, those who come in with a pass, those who are considered dangerous, who have committed crimes and he wants to speed up deportation for those guys. >> tracy, this is what john boehner was complaining about, the president taking action on his own and the executive, of course congress has done very little to make a difference. >> reporter: right, and that criticism doesn't seem to slow down the president at all. his argument continues to be if congress won't make laws to deal with this, i have to find some way within the administration to deal with it. they're calling it a humanitarian crisis. especially in texas. arizona, and california where we're seeing the children, tens of thousands of children coming over without their parents being held in those states and beyond now. >> all right tracy potts in washington, thank you. new this morning, the los angeles fire department has trained hundreds revenue captains to oversee rescue teams

over mass shootings. it comes after the deadly shooting at lax last year. they will report to the fire commissioners today. the after action report says the biggest step in emergency response was the failure of police and fire officials at the scene to quickly create a unified command post. a tsa officer was killed, several other people were hurt in those shootings. acoustics expert took the stand in the oscar pistorius murder trial today. talking about screams that neighbors heard the night reeva steenkamp was killed. the expert was called by the defense team in hopes of proving neighbors who said they heard the screams of the woman were in fact miss taken. . expert conducted test that shows ambient noise and other factors can make it difficult to hear accurately from a distance. pistorius pleaded not guilty saying he thought she was an intruder. the trial expected to wrap up in two weeks. happening today, the countdown to kickoff is on. about seven hours the u.s. will

we're seeing here on the coast. locked in west of the golden gate, brief afternoon clearing around santa krusz, but staying chilly and clear there around pacifica. close to 80 in san francisco, above 1200 degrees in tri-valley yesterday, this has started to change overnight as the high moved off to the south and east, and trough hangs out here across the west coast the next few days, temperatures coming down. 83 today in san jose, mostly 60s to close to 70 in san francisco. so we'll see cool temperatures there in the north bay too, temperatures 80s around santa rosa and pleasanton and livermore yesterday, 102, 105 degrees. you can see the trend here, certainly cooling down, mid-80s through the rest of the week and low 90s again heading into the beginning of next weekend. now another check of your morning commute, here's mike. we still have the issue going on here northbound, two right lanes blocked. the update i heard from chp subpoena that the coroner arrived on scene. they're in the area and they're

conducting their investigation related to this deadly crash, north 880 as you're approaching 98th avenue, there's the traffic jam. look at the map. in the back-up here and marina boulevard, now we have the slow down starting, we had another crash that moved to the shoulder. be prepared for the slow down, this is early for that portion to have any commute issues. into the airport, you can exit davis and go over towards doolittle drive and you can get out of that jam. the rest of the folks, just stay on 880, two lanes are open and strask moving, you're slow through the one section. the rest of your area moving nicely for oakland and 580 is quite a drive over. international boulevard moves nicely. over hereto tri-valley shows a typical build for tuesday and slowing towards the dublin interchange as well as 84 through pleasanton. the rest of the commute no problems for the south bay. we're seeing the signs of a slow down for san jose on northbound

101 and the planes had no problems getting there. we had an earlier fenlder bender on the bridge, but traffic moving smoothly. back to you. >> mike, thank you. concord teacher accused of inappropriately touching more than a dozen students is on trial this week. joseph martin faces 150 counts of child molestation. the mother of the two boys says martin taught her boys in the fifth grade at woodside elementary school and was a family friend. >> you know all of our baby clothes and he would send home treats and cookies and baked goods with my son, but always making my son be the one come to his classroom to pick them up. >> concord police began investigating martin last year. there are reports teachers were concerned about his behavior back in 2006, but those reports say the principal did not call police. martin's attorney says his client is not guilty. >> we're trying this case on a mass he isser it yar theory.

a spark sparks a talk and the gossip spreads it. >> several families are suing the school district kplaming are the principal put their kids at risk by not reporting to police back in 2006. it is 5:52 now. there will be extra officer patrolling hertz park in san francisco while police try to find out who shot and killed a man in front of kids at a playground. allan callaway was shot friday afternoon as he was playing dodgeball with children. he was there as part a job with the hertz park summer program. relatives say he was trying to turn his life around after spending time behind bars. police have not arrested anyone for that shooting and they have not said if they have any suspects. 5:52, new recalls from general motors. mms more cars are being called back, we'll have details next.

you're watching "today in the bay." gm announced six new recalls affect nearly eight million vehicles in the united states. they're being recalled for ignition switch issues again. gm is aware of seven crashes, eight injuries, and three deaths in these specific cases. the company has now recalled nearly 29 million vehicles this year. almost double the amount of cars sold by the entire industry in the u.s. last year. chrysler expanding its recall related to the faulty ignition switches, nearly 700,000 vehicles recalled by chrysler. the kara van, town and country minivans and the dodge journey all covered under that new recall. we have your forecast covered this morning, at least rob does. he's in for christina, how are we looking?
