from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist, and tamron hall. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. it is the first day of july 2014. a good looking day, a good looking crowd on this fourth of july holiday week. i'm willie geist with tamron hall. al is off. natalie is at the world cup in brazil. team usa gets ready for its huge round of 16 match with belgium today at 4:00 eastern time. we're going to talk about the world cup in a couple minutes, but we've got biss to attend to here. >> we do. >> we tried to escape the room. have you heard of this? it's a challenge you can play here in new york city. it's cool.
9:01 am
you'll get locked in a room essentially with your friends. >> willingly. >> 60 minutes. you've got an hour. you've got to find all these clues, put the pieces of the puzzle together. it all ends. eventually if you do it right with a key that gets you out of the room. we split into three teams. tamron, me, natalie, and al. kathie lee, hoda, and jenna. then the 7:00 a.m. crew. it pains me to say that matt, savannah, carson won the game. >> why does it pain you. >> i don't like losing. >> we heard on the street they may have had help. >> matt, savannah, and carsons won. natalie, do you have any theories on what happened to us in that room? >> well, i mean, willie and tamron, you guys know we had our hands on that black box. and we got down to the last 20 seconds and we had everything right there in our hands.
9:02 am
in the end we just couldn't crack the i guess four or five password code. unfortunately. we were right there. it was so frustrating. i know willie you and i, we're extremely competitive. afterwards i'm still thinking to this day to figure if i can crack that code. it drove me nuts. hats off to savannah, carson, and matt. i think they did probably have a little help. i think it makes the story better if someone gets -- >> you can't say hat's off and then say they cheated. that's the opposite. >> they were told by the gentleman that runs it that they got the fewest clues of anybody. they feel like they did something special. >> everything we did was on tape in this room. and there's no tape of the guy telling them that they had the fewest clues and that they were exceptional, all these stories that they told when they emerged today. >> we really lose class don't we?
9:03 am
rolling out conspiracy theories left and right. natalie, we're going to check with you in a minute to talk about world cup. meantime, we've got our own puzzle for you in the orange room. unscramble this phrase. post your guesses on facebook or tweet us. take a good look at that. tell us what you're looking president make that into something. >> what is that? >> i have no idea. okay. there you go. that's enough time. and time. >> no, i want to see more. >> before we move on, i need to point something out. these are martha stewart cupcakes she made earlier on the show. jerry brought a plate out for us. >> thank you, jerry. >> and i look down and tamron is either touching or licking each one of the cupcakes. >> it's not true. >> yes. it's a territorial battle. >> i touched two and willie said are you just going to touch all of them. >> so now the entire plate belongs to tamron.
9:04 am
>> i'm very honest about the fact i have a sweet tooth. yesterday i tweeted out, in fact, i was on my way home and i said i need a cheeseburger and blue bell ice cream. and that's the only thing that could comfort me yesterday. >> did you have that? >> of course i did. >> where did you have the cheeseburger? >> i have to confess. i will only eat a burger from five guys. i get hate mail from texas. if i am in texas i get a what thetaburger. if i'm up east, i get a five guys. and then i had blue bell ice cream i have shipped in from texas. >> you are fancy. >> it's not fancy at all. the best part is when you buy it in texas in the grocery store it's like a buck. you get a coupon. they always have coupons. >> shipping is only 30 bucks. >> when you get it shipped to you, true confession, don't be
9:05 am
mad at me for splurging like this. it's like a hundred dollars. >> what? you eat $100 ice cream? >> all of it. >> the irony is with the coupon in texas it's a buck. but they did tell me that cher gets it shipped too. >> so you're in good company. >> she's rich. >> she's so understated. >> i don't share it. and i divide it by how many spoons. it comes out to a penny a spoon. >> however you -- whatever you need to tell yourself, tamron. more than anything she licks cupcakes. >> we've got to move on. something with the timing and it's a serious situation. i'm sure you've seen it. on the beach people parasailing. they're attached. you can launch from the ground or from jet skis. you see this often especially around the fourth of july or summer weekends. nbc news has learned the ntsb is

9:08 am
i felt really bad about it. >> suck it up. it's only 40 minutes. >> i feel terrible about that. did you see president obama and the first lady talking. there was a reception at the white house yesterday, the president took the time to praise a member of his staff. the pastry chef whose culinary skills he admired. >> this is one of michelle and my favorite people, our executive pastry chef bill. he's here tonight with his husband charlie. where's bill? >> but he's leaving. >> this is the problem. we call bill the crust master because his pies -- i don't know what he does, whether he puts crack in them or -- but -- >> no, he doesn't. there is no crack in our pies.
9:09 am
>> i just love the clarification. the first lady says there is no crack in our pies. just to be clear. >> i love that that's such a spouse moment. she realizes he said something and she's like let me tidy this up right now. sweep it up. >> we know what he meant, but maybe not the right choice. >> but the audience seemed to like it. >> let's go back to natalie. the big story today is the world cup match. 4:00 east coast time. natalie, we are pumped. i can't imagine what it's like to be there. >> oh, it's incredible. and you know what? i can guarantee the u.s. men's national team is not having for breakfast, they're not having belgian waffles. i got to say the atmosphere here is just great. a lot of americans have been traveling all over brazil. and they're here for this game. we met a bunch of them last night. it is, of course, a do or die situation. this time around the u.s. has to win it or they're going to be going home. a lot of people thinking they've got a good shot against this
