good morning. coming up on "early today" -- they're on countless street corners around the country but a philly food truck explodes injuring a dozen. just how dangerous are they? not welcome here, a group of angry protestors block buses carrying undocumented immigrants as the influx of kids grows. the u.s. men's soccer team eliminated from world cup play in one of the most exciting matches in recent history. plus serena williams drops out of wimbledon with a bizarre illness. a plane makes a bizarre landing. white house salaries revealed and much, much more. it's wednesday, july 2nd. good morning. i'm dara brown. fourth of july meet arthur. the season's first named storm could throw a wrench in the holiday plans for tens of millions of americans heading to the east coast. right now tropical storm arthur is spinning off the florida coast and it has the potential to strengthen to a hurricane in the next 36 hours. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking this storm. bill, how is this going to affect us? >> so many are trying to figure out should they go to the beaches, do their vacation plans, millions up the east coast, this is a glancing blow for most areas and most people probably have one day they won't be allowed in the water because of the rip currents and large surf. most areas will be fine, friday, saturday and sunday. on the florida beaches the storm looks like it has an eye to it right now. it's trying to become a hurricane. it's now a strong tropical storm, hurricane hunter aircraft flying into it overnight, the pressure has dropped and now the storm is making its track up the

east coast, begun the journey that's going to parallel the southeast coast and slowly push away from the new england areas. the best chance of getting significant damage from wind and waves will be eastern north carolina, thursday night into friday morning. after that it looks to miss new england, so if the macy's fireworks in new york city should be just fine. thank you very much. caught on tape a food truck explodes injuring 12 people. investigators say a propane tank is to blame. the blast sent flames flying into the air recorded by a nearby security camera. >> a girl was walking by from the nail salon and her whole back got sprayed with debris and she was screaming all the way up the street, i'm on fire, i want my mom, i want my mom. >> two people believed to be a mother and daughter were inside the food truck at the time. all 12 injured were taken to the hospital. at last check 8 had been treated and released. no word on their conditions.

the philadelphia fire marshal's office is investigating the explosion. angry and passionate. protestors turn away more than 100 undocumented children and families from a u.s. border protection facility in southern california. three busses arrived in murrietta, california, yesterday, but protesters began blocking the roadways. many were carrying signs that said stop illegal immigration and return to sender. the busses had to go to a different border patrol station more than an hour away. the undocumented immigrants had been flown into california from texas where officials said there's been a recent influx of unaccompanied minors. >> parts of the midwest are dealing with the effects of this year's dangerous weather. relentless wind and rain created flooding and sinkholes on a chicago highway. travelers trying to catch flight at o'hare were forced to abandon theirs cars. the 64-year-old indiana man was crushed to death when a tree fell on his home. the storm downed hundreds of trees in the areas. in iowa two teens were sucked into a storm drain. after 8 inches of rain fell in just a few hours.

the body of one was found in a nearby lake. the other survived. and with the mississippi river nearing record high levels parts of davenport, iowa, remain under water. as the fighting in iraq intensifies leaders are turning to other governments outside the u.s. for help. a second batch of russian fighter jets arrived on tuesday. iraq's defense ministry says they will be used to back iraqi troops that continue to fight islamic militants. saudi arabia is giving $500 million to the united nations to help protect and provide for displaced iraqis. meanwhile, iraqi government forces began an offensive to take back control of of the city of tikrit. iraqi state tv released this new video reportedly of fighting in the tikrit offensive. it's important to the government following two weeks of defeat by the al qaeda splinter group isis. new video claims to show isis militants in syria. nbc news has not confirmed the content. the footage reportedly shows isis militants driving tanks and

vehicles through the city. it was allegedly part of a celebratory parade after the leader of isis called on muslims to travel to iraq and syria to help build the islamic state. here in the u.s., there is growing concern commercial aviation remains an attractive threat to western extremists. government sources tell nbc news that screening procedures may be enhanced in the coming days for people flying into the u.s. from foreign airports. it is all over for the u.s. at the world cup. team usa put up a good fight. the score was 0-0 after regulation, but overtime proved too much as belgium defeated the americans 2-1. nbc's jay gray was at the nation's largest watch party inside chicago's soldier field. >> digging out, the danger. >> reporter: the intensity of the win or walk game. >> usa. >> reporter: could be seen and heard in the excitement of the fans. in places like chicago where

tens of thousands supported their home team here at home. >> we have heart. we have heart. this is what they fight for. >> reporter: as the match got underway, the excitement quickly shifted to intensity with the crowd seeming to hang on every kick, every threw ball, every save. both teams had chances throughout the game but it wasn't until extra time that belgium pulled ahead. two quick goals but the american team refused to quit. closing with a flurry. a powerful strike to the back of the net but ultimately their improbable world cup run came to an end. >> overall it was a great game. still upset but, hey, usa. >> reporter: the dream of world cup glory not shattered, just postponed for now. >> we'll be back in four years. better than ever.

four years is a lot of time and this is just another steppingstone. >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news, chicago. despite the loss u.s. goalkeeper tim howard had an amazing 16 saves against belgium, a world cup record. it wasn't long before social media was praising his defensive skills. so much so that someone changed the u.s. secretary of defense, his wikipedia page, naming howard as incumbent at least until the page was changed back. a bizarre moment at wimbledon, a visibly unsteady serena williams w dra from her doubles match due to a viral illness. medical staff checked her and allowed her to play alongside her sister venus. after three games it was obvious she couldn't continue lacking basic hand/eye coordination. she released a statement saying i am heartbroken i'm not able to continue in the tournament. i thought i could rally this morning because i really wanted to compete but this bug got the best of me. she went on to say she looks

forward to returning to wimbledon next year. >> meteorologist bill karins is back with your look at the west coast weather. >> yeah. all the attention is going to be on the tropical storm but the midwest has record flooding and in the west record heat. many areas in the northwest you got torched, 99 portland, 94 seattle, 105 in medford. we skyrocketed once the soun wa out and today we will do the same in the southwest but we are cooler in the northwest. seattle only 79, 78 in portland, the really, really hot stuff contained to vegas and interior california. that's your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. the cooler air has won there.

official products of the national sleep foundation. welcome back. just a short time ago a delta 2 rocket blasted off in california. it carries a satellite designed to study carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. the launch was originally scheduled for yesterday but an equipment error forced nasa to shut it down with just 46 seconds left on the countdown. with everything fixed this morning the $468 million mission went off without a hitch. the same cannot be said for a launch on the other side of the country n virginia a separate rocket fell into the atlantic ocean just 19 seconds after taking off. it was testing new technologies. there were no injuries or damage reported. nasa will investigate.

rafael nadal ousted by nick kyrgios, ranked 144th overall to win in four sets. the last time a number one ranked player was beaten by a player ranked outside the top 100 was in 1992. maria sharapova was sent packing after losing to angelique kerber in three sets. the university of maryland celebrated its move to the big 10 conference after spending 61 years in the atlantic coast conference. maryland decided to make the move for financial reasons due to lack of financial sustainability, the university had to eliminate seven sports programs earlier in the year. but they are already seeing the upside of this move. football sales up 25% from last season. florida state athlete jame miss winston took out an insurance policy worth up to $10 million should he get injured or fall in the draft due to illness or injury. he is covered for both. winston a projected top ten pick will be eligible for the draft in 2015.

nbc bay area news begin with breaking news. >> breaking news is a wildfire growing by the second in napa county. good morning, everyone. 4:30 in the morning. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. crews struggling to gain ground against the massive flames some burning 30 feet high. so far, more than 2700 acres have burned, it's about 30 trser% contained and hundreds are evacuating the area. the fire burning in rugged terrain in poke valley, we have team coverage. meteorologist christina loren monitoring the weather conditions in that area. but let's begin with "today in the bay's" bob redell, live from the command
