i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. hundreds of firefighters out on the fire lines this morning trying to keep flames from spreading. the flames have torn through five buildings along butts canyon in napa county near pope valley and middletown. this is near the heart of wine country and the flames are threatening dozens of homes as well as vineyards and wineries. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in napa county at the fire command post. bob, we are expecting an update from firefighters any minute now. >> reporter: well, within the next couple of hours, good morning to you, scott. now that the sun's up, you get a pretty good sense where we believe the fire started. over here, outside butts canyon road, a remote area, berryessa. the burn continues to the right side of the screen. look where it's smoky down that canyon, that's where we believe a lot of the fire's headed now. the last count, according to cal

fire, 2,700 acres burned, only had 30% containment. these are numbers from the overnight. now the sun's coming up, within the next hour or so, based on our conversation with cal fire this morning, sending up an aircraft to survey the area to see, a, how much did the fire grow overnight, how much more acreage was burned and, b, were they able to get a better sense of containment? it's been cooler overnight, the winds have died down but as christina's been telling us, those conditions are not going to be that way throughout the day. it's expected to go worse. and part of the challenge for firefighters here is the fact that it's so steep and so rugged. now, this fire started, i believe, around noon yesterday, according to one report, some young men clearing some weeds using some sort of metal blade. whatever happened that metal blade ignited something and accidentally started this fire frp there it took off. >> a lot of that due to dry

feels, not a lot of access to get engines and dozers in. >> reporter: talking about dry fuels. cal fire saying conditions, so dry they don't see it this dry until august, september. but here we are in july, we're a month or two ahead of schedule, namely because of the drought. the fire has damaged five structure, not clear if those are barns, sheds or houses and forced mandatory evacuation of 200 homes. some from pope valley, many from berryessa estates. you're one of the people wondering where do i go to evacuate? it's middletown high school. they had to move to to the high school, a bigger area because they had a bigger crowd than expected. you can see the address, middletown here in california. expecting an update from cal fire within the next hour or so to get us a better sense of what acreage is at, still at 2,700? most likely not. what about containment? still at 30%?

firefighters today as they try to get a handle on the flames. we'll have a better assessment how much they've gotten done over the next hour. check the forecast. microclimate forecast with meteorologist christina loren to see if that's going to assist. >> i would be looking more forward to getting that update that comes three hours from now because i can tell you, as we head through the next few hours we're going to hold on to beneficial conditions up in the north bay. but things are going to change later today, come lunchtime. the wind is really going to pick up in the area and i know firefighters are watching this forecast very closely. let's talk about what we're experiencing in this area right now. and i can tell you, overcast sky, you saw from that live picture, the picture on the ground, a picture from chopper showing you the same thing, plenty of low clouds. moisture coming in off the pacific. actually reaching that area near pope valley. as we head throughout the day today, overcast skies will clear over the next three hours.

we'll see sunshine through and the wind will increase. it's been very light. no change to the wind forecast. as of now, we have the calmest conditions up in the north bay, which is a good thing because as i show you futurecast, expecting winds to intensify later today. the strongest gusts are expected right there in the north bay. you get the strongest wind gusts in the areas where you lack that friction. so the higher elevations also at the immediate coast. futurecast showing you, we stopped that clock for you at 8:00 p.m., we've got 30 to 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts on the way to the north bay later on tonight. the progress that is made over the next few hours going to be worth watching. hopefully really making progress, significant progress this morning. we'll keep you updated. covering you from the sky and on the ground. check your drive with mike and we'll get to your local forecast in a bit. back to you guys. 6:05. starting today, normally busy

stretch of interstate 280 in san francisco will be closed. crews trying to make the freeway safe from earthquakes. "today in the bay's" chris san cheese live in san francisco. work expected to last through the fourth of july weekend, so if you're heed to the city by the bay, be prepared. >> reporter: yeah, usually these projects are great for a holiday weekend, low volume of traffic unless you're san francisco that attracts people no matter what. a lot of folks coming up from the south bay for that giants game tomorrow 12:45. leave a tad bit early, make book a room, who knows? northbound stretch of 280 between highway 101 where the junction is there and the king street exit near at&t park where we are now. crews will be working to change out a bridge hinge on northbound 280. if it sounds familiar it's because this has happened before. this was of course in the

opposite direction, same project on our last major holiday which was memorial weekend. here are the on-ramps affected. you will not be able to get on to north bound 280 from al mainny boulevard, u.s. 101, indiana, 25th street on-ramp, 18th street on-ramp as well. trying to get off of north bound 280 you will not be able to do it at cesar chavez, mare pose 15, 6th or king street. caltrans will put up detour signs to help you get through the area. if you're headed to at&t park for the game or headed anywhere in san francisco to enjoy the weekend, you might want to take that third street exit off of 101 or use mass transit. a lot of folks did that for the first time coming up from the south bay during the last closure. they said it worked out pretty well. that's what a lot of folks are hoping for, people stay off roadways and steer clear of this area. you can find more information on our website nbcbayarea.com. live in san francisco, kris

sanchez, "today in the bay." >> great update. let's bring in mike inouye as well. steer clear of 280 up there altogether. >> exactly. i think people might be saying that's extreme, as far as the length of closure for that one hinge or few hinges they're doing but it's clear, as scott said, don't take 280 into san francisco north of 101 interchange. that's this stretch this morning. it's open, you'll see signs saying closure tonight 9:00. you can get to the giants game at 7:00. getting away the opposite direction affected. southbound 280 open as well after the game. tomorrow use the 101 alternate, get familiar with vermont street, 7th or 4th, getting toward the same area in toward the area around china base and at&t park than will be affected for your drive there through the holiday weekend, including the midday game for the giants tomorrow. a smooth drive toward the bay bridge on the east bay.

hit-and-run driver on father's day has died and the person behind the wheel still on the run. the sister of richard told the "mercury news" her brother died sunday morning. hit by a car june 15th walking on capital expressway. the crash put him into a coma. he was able to donate his heart, liver and other organs. hit by a black suv but little other information. 6:10. newark police department says they're fed up with the troublesome hotel. now officers want the public to become a part of the solution. officials say the e-z 8 motel off of 880 is a hangout for criminals. police officers spend too much time at the motel to address serious crime. the owner of the motel says talk about the crime has been overbleen and crime has dropped significantly since 2010. today the planning commission

you. i'm meteorologist christina lorener taking a live look at san francisco. a foggy breeze is what you can see here at at&t park. giants back at it tonight. they've got a day game tomorrow. we'll take a look at the forecast for those games. also low clouds have made it to sunol, it will be cooler today. and it's going to be nice for the fourth of july. your fireworks forecast in moments.

>> a beautiful view of the san mateo view. westbound, commute direction, sign reminds us on the right about the closure for north 280 into san francisco north of 101. keep that in mind, happens tonight at 9:00. right now the commute starting to build getting into san francisco. new incident at treasure island. we'll tell you about that coming up. a look at today's top stories. 6:14. in about 45 minutes, crews will use a helicopter to survey damage of this wildfire burning out of control in napa county. so far, 2,700 acres have burned but the number's expected to jump. five structures destroyed so far and 200 homes threatened. >> reporter: suspected ring leader in the attack that killed four americans in ben zghazi in 2012 expected to be in a federal courtroom today. captured earlier this month, brought to the united states. the united kingdom's commissioner's office investigating facebook, stems

from the experimental with 700,000 unknowing users in 2012. new this morning, a bus carrying undocumented immigrant is on the move. the bus left the u.s./mexican border station overnight. so far it's unclear where that bus is heading. >> "today in the bay" was there when the bus left the station. the buses has people packed in there bounced around to different locations because everywhere they go they're meeting some protests. >> reporter: that's right. this right here, behind me, is one of the exits that was used last night by u.s. immigration and customs officers to transport some un documedocumen families out. here's video of them leaving after midnight. looked like they waited for news crews to leave before loading up this bus and refused to tell us where it was headed and how many people were on board. we did get a glimpse of officers on board wearing protective

respirators. border patrol officers set up a blockade to prevent us from following behind. we tried to get answers. but after murrieta protests, agents would no longer be releasing information because of safety and security concerns. before that media blackout, undocumented immigrants can be processed here as well. there are two buses inside. we're told immigrants will be turned over to community groups to get help, getting to transportation hubs where they can be reunited with family in the united states as they await deportation hearings. no word where that bus went and no word on whether two other buses here now will be headed later. >> what will greet them as well. thanks a lot. 6:16. check your forecast as we give you a live look at san francisco

and a foggy trans-america pyramid there but it's going to be better for the 4th. christina loren. >> good thing it not the fourth and we're still at the 2nd, right? we have a good-looking fourth of july coming your way. but because of the fire concerns that we're dealing with, we are urging you to let the fireworks, let those be handled by professionals. please, please, please. we're in an extreme drought. hopefully that will turn around as we head through the next rainy season. it's just one of those years, you want to leave it to the professionals and that way you have a clean conscience, you don't have to worry about anything. we want to keep the big, beautiful bay area the way it is. temperatures comfortable out there. it's crisp out there, it is nice out there. i can tell you, the mild nights we had to get through monday and sunday a thing of the past. we'll see comfortable temperatures as we head through

overnight temperatures. across the bay area, show you some of your microclimates. ocean beach, mostly clear, bit overcast. san francisco, we are, nice and overcast. over the bay, foggy breeze at at&t park. bright sunshine trying to break through clouds here in san jose. we still have enough low cloud cover to maintain low 80s today. 82 degrees. 77 for the peninsula. 86 is the forecasted high for today. out in the north bay, so that will be warm but 15 to 20 degrees cooler than we started out the week. let talk about your fourth of july fireworks forecast. these are the cities where we have big displays happening. san reday, redwood city, san francisco, ran raphael, berkeley, pleasanton, warm during the day in the tri-valley and south bay but fireworks time 68 at 9:30, comfortable, clear shot through inland valleys. we'll keep you updated. mike inouye.

>> we're looking ofb here toward emeryville. i pointed toward the incline approaching treasure island. reports of a stalled vehicle. you see flashing lights? sounded like a bridge crew heading toward treasure island. heading from oakland into san francisco, you want to stay to the left. if you're leaving the house, by the time you get there, my hope the crew will clear that. low clouds, visibility, it's already. the speed sensors, easy drive, slowing for west 80 through berkeley right around university avenue. predictable there. by the time you get to palo, speed limit and slow to the berkeley curve. talked about the stall in the slow lane approaching treasure island, senters don't show a big issue yet. northbound 280 closing tonight 9:00. but this morning it is open heading from 101 to king street. tomorrow morning you have to use

reject the deal. a's owner lou wolf signed off on the deal. city not happy with the number of proposals and lease extension and says it will submit its own plan. people parking their car in downtown mountain view may have to watch the clock because of the new 49ers stadium eight miles away. derek shore live in mountain view. what does this mean for drivers? >> reporter: well, scott, that decision came late last night by the mountain view city council, what affects structures like the one behind me. they say it's necessary to get people from parking here and heading to that new stadium. right to what the pilot program will mean for those parking. it will establish three-hour parking limits at 11 of the 15 lots in downtown mountain view. when there are weekday events at the stadium, cars will not be allowed to stay any longer than three hours from 5:00 to 10:00

p.m. the same limit for weekend events but the time frame bigger, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. the new purpose, to discourage people from parking in areas and heading on vta to the new levi's stadium. council says three hours is long enough to enjoy mountain view's beautiful downtown but not month onnize parking spots. the program includes limits on street parking as well but there will be permits handed out to residents and those who may need them in this area. of course, businesses maybe not happy about all of this in some ways because it could limit late night people from hanging out, those trying to have dinner, they are not going to be allowed to stay any longer than three hours. still waiting on what caltrain will do with their lot. talk about raiding their rate from $5 to $25 on game days and event days. we'll have to see what will happen with them.

we'll follow the backup at toll plaza and treasure sure island. >> we have a live look at the opening bell on the nyse. yesterday the dow came within two points of 17,000. was tim howard who blocked those last two points. the nasdaq as well. july 2nd. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> very good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we have an update to breaking news. more than 3,000 acres burning in napa county. right now firefighters have 30% contained. it's been an all-night effort for those firefighters. the fire's been burning since yesterday afternoon and there are reports the flames were sparked by men cutting weeds using a tool with a metal blade. you can take a look at the map, too. the fire broke out on butts canyon road, spread northeast of pope valley.

five buildings have been destroyed, 160 homes under evacuation orders. cal fire dispatched more than 300 firefighters and 10 aircraft. bob redell will have the latest updates from the fire command post in 15 minutes. the wildfire's burning in the heart of wine couldn't trip several vineyards are close to the flames. aetna spring vineyard close to the fire. but right now it's unclear if it has been damaged by flames. meantime the pope valley winery says it is safe from the flames. it's unclear if the winery will be closed, however, today. but it did close early yesterday so staff could be with families. >> the fire's fueled by dry conditions because of the statewide drought. take a look at this map. our state's rainfall between june 2013, june 2014, you can see napa county dry, getting between 25% and 70% of its average rainfall. we can give you another live

look at the wildfire burning in napa. firefighters battling the elements as well. >> chopper headed to the scene there gives you a look above the clouds. that's a lot of smoke they're dealing with out there as well. let's check the microclimate forecast with christina loren. firefighters could use help. closely watching the forecast. >> right now is their best opportunity to really make headway on battling that blaze. at this point, wind is still calm in this specific area near pope valley. now let's talk about the details because really no change to conditions here over the past couple of hours. your temperature still in the mid-50s, still overcast. wind still very light out of the west-northwest at three miles per hour. humidity's staying put for the time being at a very good 90%. but as you know, the sun is now out, seeing that fog burn off and it's going to be warm in the north bay today. this particular area, forecasting the low to mid-80s

and wind is a bigger concern. that's going to pick up as we head throughout the afternoon. take a look, no change. over the past couple of hours, no wind up in the area. it's one of the only areas we have dense fog settling in as a result. take a look at futurecast, looking for the strongest wind gusts. notice on the key where you get warmer colors, that's fierce wind on the way to the north bay between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. the he's going to back off today five to ten degrees but the wind's going to pick up. right now firefighters have a good opportunity to make some major head waip i want to show you where low cloud rpz pleasanton right now a thin marine layer, gorgeous start here in tiburon. san jose blanket of low clouds. this will keep us cool. temperatures low 80s. 78 for the east shore. san francisco, cool day for you, low clouds about all day long there and 63 degrees as a

freeway slows there. a note, despite the signs, read carefully, closing tonight at 9:00 for northbound 280 north of highway 101 toward at&t park. it's opened this morning, closing tonight at 9:00 p.m. prepare for tomorrow's commute. south baywatching north 101 where it is slowing and kicking in from capital expressway toward the airport. earlier crash has cleared. no issues now that the debris cleared. west 580 good slowdown past airway. the crash at north livermore cleared and the big within at grant line road keeping folks over on tracy. a burst of traffic will head toward the dublin interchange and slowing 680 toward plets. by the time you get tasahara it's clearing. el charro, congestion building. unusual pattern. checking for more crashes because it's not a place where

people stick around for no reason. >> 6:35. the woman accused of attacking two caltrain conductors is expected to make her first court appearance today. the 22-year-old was arrested over the weekend after she hit a conductor wit her purse. the curb ended up with a conkupco concussion. she was acting drunk on her way home from pride celebrations. before the confrontation she was asked to get off the train but refused. flames shooting 200 feet in the air after a food truck explodes in philadelphia. new details about the blast, so strong it sent a propane tang flying into a yard.

pleasanton. 6:39. new this morning, psychologists say os ter pistorius is suffering severe trauma, likely to become suicidal if he does not get mental health care. the story the lawyer read from part of the psychologist report today at his trial. lawyers have been asking his friends and co-workers if the athlete was paranoid when he shot his girlfriend. the pistorius claims he thought

she was an intruder but the prosecutors say he killed her after a fight. he has pleaded not guilty. the suspected ring leader in the attack that killed four in benghazi in 2012 is scheduled to appear in a federal courtroom today. khattala was captured earlier this month and brought to the united states. he's charged with the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate that killed u.s. ambassador and bay area native chris stevens and three others. he has pleaded not guilty. two people recovering from serious burns after a propane tank on a food truck exploded in philadelphia. here's a look at the explosion. a security camera captured flames shooting out, shaking homes and businesses. yesterday's blast hurt a total of 12. a mother and daughter were working inside that truck at the time of the blast. they were severely burned. >> scary. 6:40, coming up, update to breaking news. more than 100 people forced from homes as the wildfire tears

county, near pope valley and middletown. near the heart of wine county. flames are threatening homes and wineries. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in napa county. you got an update for crews at the scene. the fire grew overnight. >> reporter: it did. it grew to 3200 acres. last number we had prior to that was 2,700. it grew about 500 acres overnight. that's not a huge surprise. it's still only 30% contained but having a briefing and could end up updating that number since they've got the sun out now and get a better idea where lines are i laying. there was high humidity overnight. with the high humidity the fire did lay down. instead of being a rappedly moving fire they classify slow to moderate in growth. they are telling us it's heading in a northeast direct towards lake county.

so this started here where we're at butts canyon road in napa county, started around noon. it's believed, according to one report, young men clearing weeds with a metal blade accidentally caused this fire to ignite. with this area being in a drought, it just took off from there what happens difficult for firefighters is that this area's very rugged. it's heavily wooded. hard to access with the dozers and trucks the fire's damaged five structures. it's forced mandatory evacuation of 200 homes, some from pope valley, many others from berryessa estates. >> started crying because everything i own is in the house up there in berryessa estates. and my daughter's fiancee is up there. he can't get out. the fire trucks won't go in because it's so smoky according to the highway patrol. >> reporter: we assume her daughter's fiance is okay.

the new numbers 3200 acres burned in napa county. the fire still 30% contained. based on a conversation with one of the firefighters, they expect to get a better containment today, just because they'll have a full day of the sun, though it's going to be hot out, a full day of the sun. they've got a good 18 hours, little bit more, on this fire. live in napa county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. the fire's just not burning through trees, power line as well throughout napa county. update from pg&e. the utility reporting power is out for at least 230 households and businesses in middletown and pope valley. overnight pg&e told us it has their crews sent out to take a look at that damage and get it fixed when they can get in there safely. >> we'll continue our cov taj throughout the newscast and the "today" show. updating the story online with

change as we head throughout the day today. expecting fierce wind to develop in the area between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. firefighters have an opportunity to really take advantage of the weather which is on their side. it will be, it looks like, for the next few hours. i'm with you through 11:30 here on nbc bay area. conditions here have not changed. temperatures mid-50s, overcast out there. and the wind calm. as we head throughout the day, temperatures are going to climb quickly as that shallow marine layer fades fast. live look at san jose, that's occurring. ocean beach shows you we have plenty of low cloud cover available at the immediate coast but burning off through antioch, crystal clear at 6:48 in the morning. warm in the extreme east bay through the delta, antioch going to be warm. nothing like we had to deal with on monday when we had that triple dim it plus heat.

just 80s, even in hot spots. wind speed for two reasons. right now nice and calm up in the north bay, that's the calmest spot. still getting that beautiful, moist pacific air at 54 degrees, moving all the way inland. feels comfortable. onshore flow good news when it does come to keeping hillsides moist but going to mean stronger wind as we head throughout the day today. like i said before, watching the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the north bay. temperatures work like there is, low 80s in the south bay. comfortable for tomorrow as well. and then we hit the fourth of july. here's the deal. if you're looking for the best weather for daytime activities, you want to hit the beach, hit the inner away if you want the best view of those gorgeous fireworks as they light up the sky, you're going to find that in your inland valleys, pleasanton, san jose, redwood city looking fantastic this year. let's check your drive.

>> peninsula, big, big jam right now through palo alto. look at that north all the way in toward menlo park. reports on both sides of the freeway of a jackknifed big rig. signs north from university up to marsh, a two-mile on the roadway where the rig is reported north. the backup 2 1/2 miles. slowing on the approach. southbound, slowing on the northbound side. update is that lanes are reported all cleared now, northbound 101 just cleared all lanes. this big jam from palo alto up through menlo park because of a jackknifed rig that has moved to the shoulder. distraction will be a delay but not enough to tell you to use el camino. you are okay for 101, plan on another ten minutes for that to start moving smoothly. dumbarton bridge will take you into the congestion. take march to 101. 92 clear of that. no problems through san mateo for 101. 280 clear of all of the

activity. slower drive southbound through the nimitz freeway, union city, typical build. rest of the south bay with northbound routes kicking in, 101 capital expressway, slowing at 680. 87 and 85 kicking in with volume starting to ramp up. a couple of issues north of curtner and that caused more slowing. the tri-valley looking nice. you have slower burst we talked about right around airway. no incidents reported for 580 through livermore. the bust of traffic coming after the accident cleared. looking at the rest of the approach to the bay bridge, watching roads and rails. no problems or delays for major systems. a live look, bay bridge toll plaza does have backup. but the slow drive we saw that was going on on the span, that looks like it smoothed out. looks like the stalled vehicle at treasure island cleared, that's the westbound bay bridge. popular stretch of 280 in

san francisco will be shut down over the next couple of days. crews upgrading the freeway to make it more earthquake ready. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san francisco. kris this work expected to last through the july 4th holiday weekend. >> reporter: it gets worse before it gets better and we'll be safer for an earthquake. but it might be a miserable fourth of july weekend if you're trying to get into san francisco. here's the stretch of the freeway that we're talking about. 280 northbound only from the highway 101 junction to the king street off-ramp near at&t park where we are now. construction crews working to change out a bridge hinge on northbound 280. if this sounds familiar it's because the same thing happened but the opposite direction during the last major holiday, memorial weekend. on-ramps affected, northbound on-ramp from 280. alemany boulevard, u.s. 101,

the night after protesters blocked it in another southern california town. this is video of the protest in murrieta. 140 undocumented immigrants supposed to be processed in murrieta before released to family or friends. the move is meant to ease overcrowding at border crossings dealing with an influx of children crossing the border alone. protesters in murrieta say they're concerned about safety. more than a dozen people plan to spend the day looking for a woman who disappeared from the south bay a week and a half ago. she left her sister's us gilroy to go for a walk last weekend without her cell phone or wallet or keys. she never returned. there is concern because she's battling severe depression and has diabetes. volunteers looking for sierra lamar will be supporting the morning search. the police department assigned two detectives to the case and they will go door to door this weekend. police are looking for one of the suspects who broke into

an elderly couple's home and sexually assaulted an 85-year-old woman. first told you about this yesterday as breaking news. it happened at a home near sun shadow lane in east san jose. police say a young man and a teen broke into the home at 4:00 a.m. yesterday and sexually assaulted the woman, and beat her husband. the suspects took off in the couple's suv. a chp officer tried to pull them over for a traffic violation and the driver eventually crashed into a home. the driver ran off, but police managed to capture a 15-year-old passenger. >> encounters with hayward police officers caught on camera. the city spending $220,000 to buy body cameras that will clip on to officers' uniforms or glasses. according to the mercury, it will cost 130,000 to store those recordings, but the city attorney expects the number of lawsuits allegedly excessive force will be cut in half.

levi's stadium may start parking in downtown tricky. "today in the bay" derek shore live where drivers may have to start watching the clock to park. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. this ordinance or this pilot program that was approved yesterday by city council would not only have affect on street parking but affect parking structures and lots like this one here on brian street in downtown mountain view. the purpose of that new parking limit is to discourage people from leaving their cars here in mountain view and then hopping on vta or getting a ride to events at the new levi's stadium in santa clara. in order to do that, they are limiting how long a car can stay in one place during those events. the pilot program will establish three-hour parking limits at 11 of their 15 lots in the downtown area. weekday events at the stadium cars will not be allowed to stay
