symptoms. i've learned patience and to be persistent, you have to keep looking for what is wrong, and not just taking that first diagnosis. >> wow. dr. richard horowitz is the author of "why can't i get better solving the mystery of lyme and chronic diseases" and a scientific board member for the bay area lyme foundation. welcome. so many people are struggling with this. >> yes. it's a terrible problem, it's an epidemic spreading worldwide at this point. >> she said she didn't see the tick bite or bull's eye. that's supposed to be a tell-tale sign but not necessarily? >> no. the ticks are so small this time of year, they're like a pencil head you can hardly see them. half the people don't get a rash and half who do get a rash it doesn't look like the bull's eye. looks like you got bit by a spider or doctors think you got an infection in your skin. they miss the diagnosis. >> we've heard so much about lyme disease i would think when you have some of these symptoms that a doctor would think
10:41 am
immediately, let's test you for lyme disease and isn't it just a simple blood test? >> it is. the problem is that the tests are just not reliable. if doctors do some of these tests and it's negative they tell the patient they don't have it. but the first test that they do, it misses about half of the people who have lyme disease. >> good grief. >> what should you do and feeling her symptoms, fatigue, and the doctor says no we've tested you for lyme disease, you don't have it? >> one of the most important things is to take a good history from a patient. for example, if you have good and bad days where your symptoms are coming and going and moving around your body, one day you have muscle or joint pains in the shoulder and do two days later in your hip and three days later in your knee, tingling, numbness and burning moving around your body and walk into a room and can't remember why, forgetting people's names and phone numbers, you're very tired, you a stiff neck and headache, you're sensitive to sounds and light, you can't fall asleep, keep waking you. >> we're nodding. >> yeah. >> yes. >> we got that. >> what do you do?
10:42 am
you have all that. >> you have those symptoms, lyme is multisystemic, causes many symptoms at once. you have these symptoms you should get tested. there's a second test, and on the western blot that tells you if you've been exposed. >> tell us what to do. if a person has lyme disease, what's the remedy? >> well, if you get it early you can cure it. take certain antibiotics early on you can knock it out of your body. if you don't get it early in the first month or two it goes on to chronic lyme disease and that's where the controversy lies, what is chronic lyme? the doctors are debating at this point. treat it with antibiotics, don't you treat? what i have found it's not just lyme, these ticks are containing multiple bacteria, viruses, parasites like malaria organisms and that's why people are staying sick. not just the lyme. it's all these other bugs getting into people's bodies. >> okay. >> wow. >> interesting. >> a lot more. >> it's terrifying. you want to be outdoors this time of year. i live outside. everybody does. >> you have to be careful with
10:43 am
the ticks and really do prevention. so you can put per meth ran sprays on your clothes. take them outside and spray them to protect yourselves. deet, in case it's really a problem and you always do tick checks when you come inside. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. all right. great taste never goes out of style. >> how old is becoming new again when it comes to home decor. >> if you haven't planned your fourth of july decor we have fun ways to work in the let me ask you a question. if you've had chickenpox, what do you think the odds are of getting shingles?
