from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." and a very good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. south bay softball players may have to be on the bench after a fire pit exploded causing some of them to get burned. happened late last night in campbell. and that's where we find "today in the bay's" bob redell with the very latest, bob, scary situation. >> reporter: it was scary, good morning to you, scott. what's remarkable is that none of the girls was seriously hurt when that gas fire pit exploded that the home here on briarwood way in campbell. it happened around 10:00. there were six girls, all teammates on a fast pitch softball team. roasting marshmallows around the mash cue fire pit when it exploded. sounded like the fire cracker according to the father. the force so was strong it damaged the fire ring. sent debris flying into the air. two of the girls went to the hospital to be treated for minor

burn injuries, they are expected to be okay. the homeowner tells us that his fire pit was around three and a half years old. they used it many times and never had any problems with it until last night. fire pit was going for an hour, hour and a half. >> they were toasting marshmallows. it wasn't something where you turn the gas on, light it, and it was an explosion, it was going for quite a while. >> reporter: santa clara county fire, they responded to this call last night. it's their investigator who will be trying to figure out what caused that fire ring to fail. reporting live here in campbell, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you much, bob. you know while crews were responding to that fire, the emergency dispatch center in santa clara county lost the ability to dispatch ambulances and fire trucks. it's unclear exactly what happened, the emergency management services director thinks it could have been a power surge at about 10:30 last night. several systems used to dispatch

ambulances and fire trucks by a computer just went down. at one point, workers had to use radios to manually dispatch emergencies. >> i don't think we've had anything quite like this before, but i think it's reassuring to knee that when we do have these unusual critical incidents we're able to adapt quickly and get the emergency units to dispatch quickly for the person in need. >> after 90 minutes, the problems were fixed by midnight. firefighters are trying to gain ground on the out of control wild fire in napa county. the wild fire has grown to 3800 acres, and it's only 30% contained. that's the same containment firefighters have had since tuesday. it's a rough one. >> right now bay area fire crews headed north to help hundreds of firefighters who are already on the fire lines. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san leandro, our cameras were there as crews loaded up their gear to

take off. >> reporter: we certainly were, scott, and the 22 firefighters who loaded up this morning has been on the -- have been on the road for an hour and a half now. they won't know what they're going to do until they get there, and they get to the base camp and get their assignment. here's what they look like as they were loading up and getting red ready to hit the road. the men and women work in fremont, livermore, pleasanton, oakland, and alameda county fire departments when they get there to the napa pope county line, the fire, they will work in five, four-person teams, they are ready to hit the ground running. they say no one deploys faster than they do, other than the u.s. military. >> well it can be difficult, i haven't been there yet, but it appears to be steep terrain, so that means we could do dining lot of hiking to deploy water hose to help extinguish the fire. >> reporter: now the battalion chief says they are ready to work in the steep terrain, they're used to it and certainly

did some of that the last time they were deployed about two weeks ago. they headed down to southern california to help with the fire fight down there. they are prepared to stay anywhere from three days as long as two weeks. that's as long as their deployment can be. by the way, as they are gone, while they are gone, no one has uncovered here in the bay area. they rotate so they can deploy in state-owned vehicles leaving their fire houses fully staffed with equipment and with personnel. reporting live in san leandro, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's bring in christina loren right now. do you think the weather's going to help the firefighters at all today? >> yeah, you know, i do, at least for the next few hours while we are getting the coolest conditions of the day, where our humidity levels are at the highest we're going to see for the rest of the day, this is a really opportune time for firefighters out there. now the one difference between yesterday and this morning is the fact that our wind is actually still rather strong in the area out of the southwest at

about 15 to 18 miles per hour from time to time, we're getting gusts from completely different areas. so basically your wind gusts are erratic, it's hard or it tell where the wind is going to spread the fire at this point. that is the one difficulty that they're facing out there this morning. as i said before, with that moisture coming off the pacific, it does do a great deal to help them in batting that blaze. now as we head throughout the day today, the cool ocean air is going to keep your temperatures comfortable. we will not bipass your averages for this time of year, in fact we're going to be a little bit below average because of all that cloud cover no this morning. pacific ka shows you full deck of low clouds, you can see here, lovely sunrise taking shape. we have low clouds spanning all the way inland. san jose shows you mostly sunny here as we are facing the east. lots of sunshine coming in already, just a little bit of cloud cover, we'll still see temperatures only in the low 80s. basically a repeat performance from yesterday, the wind will pick up as we head throughout the second half of the day, the

low clouds will burn off by about lunchtime and the wind is going to pick up like i said before, we're watching the window between 1:00 p.m. and about 9:00 p.m. for the strongest wind today in the bay area. the fog will roll back in as we head throughout tonight which means onshore flow will resume for tomorrow. that's great news because we to want hold on to the beautiful conditions when you're actually outdoors tomorrow for the fourth of july celebration. 82 degrees in the south bay. i want to point out we have a lot of dry brush out there. please leave the fireworks to the professionals. 85 degrees in the north bay, 67 degrees on the east shore, 86 degrees in the tri-valley, basis of the drought this year, if you noticed anything fishy in your neighborhood, it's better to be safe than sorry, and i don't usually say this, but report it. 70 degrees, let's get to the good stuff, the party. fourth of july looks good in san jose. the place to be is the alameda. 70 degrees, the parade starts at 10:00 a.m. then they are going to have a picnic and festival, 81 degrees

out there by 2:00 p.m., fireworks go off, 9:00 p.m., 67 degrees, a clear shot out there. looking really good this year in downtown san jose. back to you scott and laura. new morning, major stretch of interstate 280 shut down ahead of the fourth of july weekend. you can see no cars allowed in the northbound lane approaching san francisco. let's look at the map. give you a better idea of where we're talking. northbound 280 closed in san francisco from the 101 split leading into the ball park. >> now the closure will be an issue planning trips into the city for the fourth of july weekend, and also for people heading to today's giant's game. the nannette miranda will have a live report in of a hour. right now, let's check in with mike inouye this morning. wow, what a sunrise. >> it is very nice. over towards the live look, if you missed it folks, here's what's going on for 280 right now, we have the freeway closed and there you go. there's the closure. as you head throw the area, let's get back to the map, that

moves you aroundless. we are trying to get our best view of the construction, we have it here, north 280 as you come up from 101 up towards king street. that is closed. we saw in the earlier shot, there is a chuck that is not there. they have to replace a hinge there. you'll use caltrans to get into san francisco because surface streets are going to be really congested, folks going from 101 mixing in with the folks heading towards ts bay bridge and over towards oakland. that'll be a nightmare of the commute at times today and tomorrow for the festivities getting to the giants game as well as to maybe some firework shows as well isn't the city. over on the east bay. we show an easy drive, let's look at the toll plaza. live look shows you the backup. all lanes off to the left which is the end of the parking lot, but not to the 880 overcrossing. a lighter drive off the maize as we look at the maps again. we see the speed sensors, slowing for 24. and smooth drive for 580 through

county fair in san rafael, beautiful conditions out there tomorrow, 81 degrees in the heat of the day. 9:00 p.m. for fireworks, 62 degrees and a clear sky overhead. and a lot of focus on that freeway closure getting into san francisco. we'll talk about that in a second. i want to show you the live look at san jose where we have the traffic just starting to eek with a little more volume coming through the south bay. look at the tri-valley where we had earlier jam in livermore and of course again at san francisco commute coming up. thanks a lot mike and christina. 6:14, here's a look at today's top stories. positive sign for the economy this morning, the u.s. add 288,000 jobs last month. dropped the inemployment rate to 6.1%. the lowest level since september of 2008. this morning investigators trying to figure out why a backyard fire pit exploded while several teenage girled were roasting marshmallows. two taken to the hospital for minor burns.

the homeowner has never had any problems with the pit before. right now northbound 280 in san francisco is closed from the 101 split to just before at&t park for repair work. the closure will be an issue for people planning trips into san francisco for the fourth of july weekend, and also for people headed to today's giant's game. the roadway is expected to reopen monday morning. and new video this morning of a toy warehouse in brazil that caught fire. you can see how massive the flames are. more than 20 fire trucks, 100 firefighters responding to last night's scene, no one was hurt. the warehouse didn't burn near the city's world cup stadium or the main tourist areas. the cause of the fire under investigation. but just an enormous fire. >> i got that vision of toy story when they're headed towards the fire pit. poor little toys. 6:15 right now, happening right now, there are evacuations under way in the carolinas, tropical storm arthur now officially a hurricane, and it's

moving up the east coast from florida, hurricane warnings are now in effect in north carolina. now tourists and locals have to make the decision to stay or go. >> jay gray joins us from kill devil hills in the outer banks of north carolina. jay, fourth of july weekend, the coast is going to be packed with people. >> reporter: yeah, it is. and that's something that has officials worried, the national hurricane center saying this is intensifying, up to 80 mile an hour sustained winds right now as it moves towards the coast. its been beautiful, the waves, the calm, the wind, not real bad at all. that's not the case up and down the carolinas. outer banks here will likely see the most of it. as you're seeing were there are some places getting a little bit of a spitting rain right now. they're seeing a little bit of a pick up in the wind here, we expect that to start this afternoon moving into the evening when it will be very intense. and you talked about it, people

are here starting the long july 4th weekend. officials warning them, you've got time right now to decide are you going rided this out or move to higher ground. if you are staying and most we've talked to say they will. make sure you're prepared and you have supplies and sustain why's for a couple of days without electricity. and most of all, don't get near the water, they're concerned about that for people who haven't been in these situations. rip current's going to be very dangerous. and that's when you run into problems, when people get ambitious, they get overzealous and want to experience the full force of a hurricane. not a good idea. and so they're going to clear the beach off here when are they have to and make sure that everyone stays as safe as possible. right now everyone just watching, waiting to see what kind of july 4th fireworks that arthur may bring, laura, scott, back to you. >> off spot to go to, but you'll continue reporting there, right? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. we have a fallback spot. we'll stay here as long as we

can. and i think we'll be able to stay here for quite some time. >> great, kill devil hill, thank you. this gives you perspective about how quickly the weather shifted. this is video taken a couple hours ago in wrightsville beach, north carolina. much further south than jay gray. calm, sunny on the baechd, then look at this, this is video taken just moments ago on that same stretch of beach. camera shaking in the wind, the waves more intense, and you can see some rain drops on the lens as well. things can change rapidly. >> which means it's another day to be glad you live in california. >> glad for satellite imagery. it's really, really cool, we see can see these storms days out. seven to ten days we can see something that has foeshl develop. we've been watching arthur for a while. arthur is not going to reach a major hurricane strength though. that's the good news and also we are not expecting a direct hit

from arthur. it's around that eye where you get the gustiest and strongest sustained wind speeds. and right now we told you, that's at 80 miles per hour for arthur. we're going to keep watching that, meanwhile, we are going to be the envy of the nation. i hate to say it, but it's true. we are going to be the envy of the nation this year when it comes to the fourth of july. it'll be hot down in socal. we are talking perfection, clear shot of fireworks at 9:00 p.m. and that's a hard call to make. you get that one wrong, your facebook page represents it vividly the next day. looking live, little bit of cloud cover there, love the shot, it shows you we have label the of marine layer out there, and it has spanned all the way inland, but it's thin and it'll burn off quickly. as a result, we will see a little summer sizzle out in your valley spot. san jose will hit the low to mid-80s for today.

that's average for this time of year. we're going to bring the 90s in by saturday and sunday, keep that in mind. today and tomorrow, holdingen to beautiful conditions. little bit of drizzle out there. widespread low dlouds start means we're going to see a comfortable day. by lunchtime, completely sunny. onshore wind will pick up this afternoon, and fog will roll back in this evening, the wind will play a factor for today. we'll see the wind pick up between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. 82 degrees in the south bay, 93 degrees for san francisco, and 67 degrees along the east shore. one more time, what's happening across the bay area, 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, redwood city, parade, mike inouye is the grand marshal. the fireworks out there 9:00 p.m., 34i6 degrees, clear shot there. let's check the drive, couple things it to point out in the that department, here's mike. first of all, thank you to the folks from the pence last of celebration organization, gosh, if i can get the name right. it's the redwood city parade.

thanks you guys. we'll be out there. over here at the bay bridge, parade of cars going on because of those metering lights. all the way back to the end of the parking lot for those left approach lanes. look at the maps, easy drive during the freeway. tiny bit of slowing down to 55 miles per hour as you're approaching university avenue. over here no problems for 24, 580, or 880. easy flow of traffic here on the bay yir as well as the golden gate bridge. northbound 280, that's not an option. it is closed right now and continuing through monday morning for the hinge repair work. again north 280 is closed. those are all exits you can use to take the surface streets in towards mission bay and at&t park where the giants are playing. expect a ton of congestion here and continuing into the evening hours as folks will make a getaway or at least try.

at 6:25, texas governor rick perry is set to testify at a texas state hearing on the surge of undocumented immigrants crossing the border. today's hearing is expected to look at how the state is responding to the growing number of underanld children crossing into the u.s. just yesterday the white house said the president was working on changing to speed up the deportations of kids kaugts at the border. >> now because there are so many undocumented immigrants in texas, the department of homeland security is flying groups into southern california to be processed. now people in the town of marietta are fighting back during a special meeting last night, they expressed their anger. >> use the word illegal alien. they came across here illegally. >> i'm undocumented myself, and

i understand what it feels like to be pushed away and not wanted in this country. >> outside the meeting, a number of immigrants rights activists gathered. more buss will arrive in town tomorrow. police are prepared for the protesters to be there as well. this morning homeland security is paying extra attention to who boards flights bound for the u.s. this after american intelligence picked up chatter about the terrorist group isis trying to perfect a bomb that can slip past security and detected isis is the same militant group responsible for all of the recent violence in iraq. increased security is not connected to a specific threat, it only affects overseas airports. meanwhile, 19-year-old denver woman under arrest this morning accused of trying to join isis and engage in violent jihad because she fell in love. shannon conley was arrested in april at the denver international sbirpt trying to board a flight to turkey. investigators are just now

closure on northbound 280, how's it looking? >> reporter: well it looks like there's a lot of repairs going on. there really is no good time to close a major artery into san francisco, but caltrans says a long holiday weekend with many folks away is probably the best option. take a look behind me over there, construction crews are hard at work preparing a section of the 280 extension, while that's going on as you said, northbound 280 at the 101 split to the ball park has been closed since last night and will remain closed until 5:00 a.m. monday morning. this is the first time morning commuters will have to deal with this latest closure. traffic is expected to be impacted, not just for this morning's commute, but also this afternoon's giants game at at&t park. opera in the park will be held there as well on saturday, and various other fourth of july activities in the area. drivers are expected to jam on to 101 and city streets. the closures for a good cause to make it safer during an

earthquake. >> we can replace the section of freeway, it's what they call the hinge. where two sections start to come together. and after 50 years, its become fairy worn. >> it'll be as me. >> maybe we should take the train. >> reporter: back here live now, hinge replacement involves demolishing a portion of 280. you can see the gap already there putting in the new hinge then pouring new cement. this is actually the second closure for repair work on this freeway. the third and final will take place on labor day weekend. again, northbound 280, at the 101 split is closed until monday morning. southbound is open. live in san francisco, nannette miranda, for "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, nannette. mike, i can't help but think we could jump that with a bus. >> let's do it. >> you guys are watching too many adventure movies. >> i'm driving. >> there you go. >> of course. always.

look out on the roadway's right now, laura knows her way around, i want to help you around this closure. northbound 280 as nannette said from 101 up towards kings street, base deploy at&t park, the whole exstengs closed throughout the holiday weekend. folks are using 101 as your at mat. get familiar if you head to the giant's game. also consider taking vvt street off of the 16th or seventh or fourth, that'll take you over towards mission bay in china basin and that is the area that's affected most by the closure cut off, but a lot more traffic heading over towards the area. bart, a great option for you into the city. no problems there, caltrans up, peninsula up to the south bay, that'll take you right to the ball park if that's where you're going. rest of the transit represented here. no delays there. live look at the sensors for our approach to the bay bridge. you see an easy approach, the maize, east shore freeway, no slowing there, showing you the toll plaza itself is why you have the back-up. back to the 880 overcross,

the hundreds of firefighters on the front lines. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san leandro. our cameras were there when one local crew loaded up and took off. >> reporter: hi there, 21 men and women from different departments here who are headed to the front lines of the fire fight in napa and pope counties. and they are ready to stay for as long as two weeks if that's what it takes. we were here as they were loading up and getting ready to hit the road. they will arrive at base camp and that's when they'll find out what their assignments will be. these are men and women who usually work in the department for fremont, livermore, pleasanton, oakland, and alameda county. when they get there they'll work in five, four-person teams. they're ready to hit the ground running, staying as long as 14 days and they say that other than the military, no one deploys faster than bay area fire crews. when they get there, they expect the fire fight to be very physical. >> it can be difficult. i haven't been there yet, but it

appears to be steep terrain, that means that we could do doing a lot of hiking to deploy water hose to help extinguish the fire mop-up. >> reporter: now the battalion chief says they'll be doing the hiking to deploy hoses. they don't know if they'll be working on containment or mop-up by the sounds of it from the numbers you caught this morning, it is going to be more working for containment. by the way, no department is left uncovered while they were deployed to the front lines because all of the resources are kind of stretched out, and they work with state resources, state trucks so that no station here in the bay area is left uncovered. they are ready to go, and they are expecting to arrive around 7:00 at base camps this morning. reporting live in san leandro, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's check the conditions with christina loren, that can make or break the way they fight it too. >> yeah, they have a couple of days where we're going to keep

this pacific moist air coming in. i can tell you right now, firefighters have been briefed, there is really hot, dry weather shaping up for as we get into saturday and sunday. no doubt that's why they're bringing in the heavy reinforcements at this time. while the weather is still favorable. let's talk about the conditions that are still working with firefighters at this time. the only difference between yesterday and today is the fact that our wind is stronger in the area, it's out of the southwest at about 17 miles per hour, that's a strong, sustained speed. but i can tell you right now, your humidity's still at 93%, that is a really, really good number to be at for this time of the morning. 56 is the temperature out there. it's still rather cool and this is really the opportunity right now as you head throughout the next fe hours for them to do their best while we're still getting those choice conditions because once we see noon, we are going to see abundant sunshine in the area and the wlind pick up for this evening just like yesterday. temperatures right now are mostly in the 50s, 56 degrees in

15 # 2, 101, a lot of motorcycles heading down there for hol ster rally. about 150,000 guests expected all weekend, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we have new details to share this morning at 6:52 about a backyard fire pit that exploded overnight in campbell. six girls were sitting around that pit at the time. bob redell live outside the house where it happened and two girls went to the hospital, we understand. >> reporter: they did, and fortunately they are going to be okay. good morning, laura. this was one of the built-in barbecue pits, the kinded that fueled by a natural gas line. there were six girls all teammates on a fast pitch softball team. they were sitting around the fire, roasting marshmallows here in campbell. everything was fine for the first hour, hour and a half. then around 10:00 last night, the fire pit exploded shooting out debre in the backyard. sent two of the girls to the hospital as you mentioned. >> i heard the blast. i still assumed it was a big

fire cracker and five second later they come sprinting into the kitchen and then i started seeing some blood on knees and feet and hands and on the neck and things like that. >> reporter: the two girls who were sent to the hospital were treated for minor burn injuries, the other four were picked up and taken home by parents. now the homeowner tells it us this fire pit was about three and a half years old. he used it about 40 to 506 times over the period of time without ever having problems. it's not like they turned it on and there was an immediate explosion, his daughter and friend were sitting around the fire pit for quite some time before it blew up. the santa clara county fire department which responded last night is investigating what caused that fire ring, that barbecue pit to fail. reporting live here in campbell, bob redell, "today in the bay." now while firefighters were at the scene of that explosion, the emergency dispatch center in santa clara county was down. the building did not lose four,

but the center lost the ability to dispatch ambulances and fire trucks by computer. a at one point, workers were using radios in the parking lot to manually dispatch the ambulances and two emergencies after 90 mirns, the problems were fixed, they're still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but the emergency management services director thinks it could have been a power surge. 6:54 been this morning investigators determining whether someone set a home on fire in san jose. take a look at the map. the house is on north autumn street near the s.a.p. center. part of it went in flames after 10:00 last night. and we have new video to show you, the house now boarded up and a pile of burned debris sitting in the driveway. most of the damage was on the inside of the home. no one was there when that fire started and it's even possible the home was abandoned. crews put the fire out quickly, no one was hurt. well deadlocked. this morning jurors will try to come up with a verdict in bryan stow's civil case against the

francisco as commuters are trying to get ahead to work, ahead of the fourth of july holiday weekend. good morning, nannette. >> reporter: good morning. since last night's closures, this was the first morning commute that drivers that had no access to northbound 280 at the 101 split heading into san francisco. look behind me as i step aside here. construction crews have moved in overnight to replace a decade's old seismic safety hinge. that involves demolishing a portion of the freeway, and you can see that brake right -- break right now there. and cementing it into place. that'll require several day's work meaning northbound 280 from the split will be closed to the ball park until 5:00 a.m. monday morning. as you can imagine, this could create a traffic mess. and it's not just this morning's commute, but you have a giant's game this afternoon, opera in the park on saturday, fourth of july activities throughout the weekend. the traffic will force thousands of drivers who use the 280 ekts tension on -- extension on to city streets or 101.
