>> an amazing image of it hitting the top of the world trade center more on those storms, including arthur coming up. let us get right to this breaking news, hurricane arthur is threatening the carolina, causing dangerous rip currents along the eastern seaboard on the eve of the summer's busiest holiday weekend. we have more on the potential path and impact. >> you point out the rip currents. not everyone is going to see the rain and the winds from this storm. but the entire east coast will feel the effect of the rip current. so if you are at the beaches this weekend, going into saturday and sunday, that is one thing you want to keep in mind. it is now 340 miles to the southwest of cape hatteras, north carolina. winds are up to 75 miles an hour, it is now a category-1 hurricane, in bright pink, that's our hurricane warnings, in red, we have our tropical storm warnings, it's the east coast of north carolina, where we are going to see our worst conditions, it remains a category 1 hurricane as it

crosses fear cape hatteras 2:00 a.m. friday morning, it will pick up, watch how quickly it races over the atlantic. so we are not looking at rain or gusty winds in the atlantic. we could see some of the rain clip cape cod and also into nantucket and martha's vineyard, it moves up into nova scotia by 2:00 a.m. we will see the rip currents from the coast of maine into the coast of florida. that's where the surf is going to be roughed up. we are looking at the chance of elevated what under the circumstances levels because of that storm surge, in addition to that, here's your rainfall. here is cape hatteras and outer banks, that's where we could see four to up to six inches of rain, so, obviously, preparations are under way. we have kerry sanders live in kill devil hill, north carolina. how does it look? >> reporter: good morning, it's a beautiful morning. it's a quandary for so many people waking up this morning. the outer banks are so popular on july 4th.

people like to come here for vacation. now they hear there is a category-1 hurricane, you look all the way up to hatteras, there is a question, do you come on your vacation or not? local officials in cape hatteras and that general area in dare county are suggesting there is a mandatory evacuation. if you are coming in, you will not be able to stay there. along the coast, they are suggesting you might want to delay your arrival. can you see some people have started to evacuate. past of this is driven by the memory of hurricane irene three years ago when hurricane irene came ashore in this area, a category-1. >> that storm surge took out a portion of north carolina highway 12 and cut off some of the ability to get from one part of the area to the other. >> that road has now been rebuilt, re-engineered. you talked about the rip current. >> that is perhaps the greatest danger to folks who think they're going to go in the water after the storm passes. let me show you an animation of what this is. it's a hidden danger.

it's just below the surface. as you see there, as the water comes in it creates in the sand what looks likes a little valley. you can't see that. but the water is rushing out. as you are swimming, can you get caught in that and pulled out t. natural tendency, of course, is to swim against that to make your way to shore. even an olympic swimmer can't make it. so you are supposed to swim parallel to the shore and make your way in, it's a lot easier said tan done. >> thank you very much, a lot of beach versus extra lifeguards because of those riptide rip currents we are expecting. >> it will get crowded at the beaches this weekend. new concern this morning about a potential threat against commercial passenger planes that ply into this country. the department of homeland security is asking airlines in foreign airports to take immediate steps to strengthen their security measures.

nbc's tom costello, good morning to you. >> reporter: we are talking about foreign airports with direct flights to the united states, from europe, from the middle east, the mediterranean and north africa. the concern is that terrorists pay be dropping new techniques, perhaps even non-metallic explosives to smuggle a bomb and get it past airport security. the war in syria is the focus of this latest threat. security sources believe militants there have been working with bomb-makers in yemen who remain determined to attack western targets, especially the u.s. the concern, hundreds of europeans and a handful of americans who join the extremists also hold western passports. >> that could give them easier access to u.s.-bound planes, homeland security secretary jay johnson and rachel maddoe show wednesday. >> we are tracking that population. we are very concerned about it because there are extremists within the borders of syria that would like to indoctrinate these people and send them back to

their own countries with a different purpose. >> reporter: while the tsa sets a security standard for u.s.-bound flights coming from foreign airports, the u.s. is now asking airlines and those airports to ramp up their security, including more random passenger patdowns, more screening of carry-on backs, more swabing for explosive residue and extra scrutiny of electronics. >> we are going for you, barak obama. >> reporter: they learn it's on travel patterns of foreign fighters and the risks that security screenings could be compromised at certain airports. >> terrorists in iraq and elsewhere continue to refine their methods of attack. >> that means as they advance, we have to advance as well. >> that requires new screening methods and a heightened vigilance. >> reporter: we are told these new security enhancements overseas will begin over the next coming day, here at home, july 4th travel is unlikely to see any impact whatsoever at their local airports.

matt, back to you. >> tom, thank you very much. now to that explosive situation in california where 140 undocumented immigrants were turned away from a processing centers when protesters blocked the way. miguel is live in marietta, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, border patrol agents who work at this facility say they can't handle any influx of undocumented immigrants here. >> that doesn't mean they're not coming. this is the life of hundreds of immigrants shuffling from one secured area to another, to be process food an oncertain future. they played the desperate 1,400 mile journey from honduras to texas last month almost losing their lives during a river cross. >> i thought, my gosh, she said,

i brought my kids all this way only to have them drown. mothers and their children were on board three homeland security buses tuesday when angry protesters in the town of marietta forced the buses to turn around but they're not from mexico. the number of unaccompanied children from el salvador, guatemala and hon honduras jumped from 4,000 three years ago to nearly 40,000 this year. the pain reason, growing violence across central america, fear of rape and murder. >> people are not fleeing from central america bus they think they can get some kind of benefit from the united states. people are fleeing out of desperation. >> we use the word illegal aliens. >> reporter: back if in mar ret that, the mayor allen long heard from angry residents late last night.

>> there is admittedly a nationwide problem and little old marietta has taken the lead and is getting change. >> reporter: a lead some call a defining moment and others say it's a disgrace. the mayor says the next wave of undocumented immigrants could arrive here on the 4th of july independence day, he says the influx will continuing every 72 hours for the foreseeable future. tamron. >> all right, miguel, thank you very much. >> a dangerous wildfire in northern california is sparking concerns this morning, peter is if fortunately. >> if that's not a sign of things to come out west, raging wildfire, northern california is growing this morning. this is just north of napa valley's famed winery, fire officials say the blaze now covers more than 3800 acres. it has burned two homes already and is threatening nearly 400 others, more than 1,000 firefighters is battling those flames. there is growing concern across the west that a dry winter could

make this one of the worst fire seasons in decades. in vermont, seven firefighters are recovering this morning after being struck by lightning. they were battling a two alarm house fire when officials say lightning hit a metal pipe sticking up from the ground outside the home. the firefighters were rushed to the hospital, fortunately, all seven are expected to be okay. a 19-year-old colorado woman has been arrested for attempting to travel to syria to engage if violent jihad. new unsealed court documents so they thwarted shannon conley's attempts. they say she joined the u.s. army explorer for months so she can be trained in military tactics. conley told investigators she was in a relationship with an isis fighter and was try, to get there to see him. a veteran horse jockey is facing charges accused of dragging a sheriffs deputy during a traffic stop.

take a look at this, from the dash-cam video, the sheriff deputy stopped him for having an expired tag when the jockey became uncooperative, the deputy tried to arrest him. that's when he hit the gas with the deputy hanging on for dear life. the truck came to a stop a few seconds later. he is now charged with resisting an officer with violence. an indiana police officer has been suspended after pushing a man over in his wheelchair. this incident took place at a charter school last october after the man allegedly told employees he had a gun. when police arrived on the scene, they determined that the man was not armed. but when he attempted to leave, he ran over the officer' foot with his chooel wheelchair. that's when he shoved him, forcing the wheelchair over. the officer was demoted and will serve 30 days unpaid suspension. finally, take a look at this. this is a video of a dog, he won't take no for an answer, even if the person he is trying

work and briefly returned to his vehicle during lunch. he is alleged to have research and development hot cars on the internet. a source tells nbc news that rvp happened before the day cooper died. >> if that is true, it suggests premeditation. it suggests liberation and it suggests simply malice murder. >> reporter: since speaking at cooper's funeral, calling her husband a wonderful father, she has been silent she told investigators she research and development hot car deaths online. >> she wasn't the one that left cooper in the car. >> a neighbor says he never heard any arguments. >> whenever you go to work, she was out there, i guess, to greet him. it was just a normal family as i can see. >> so far, police have revealed no motive in this case. harris is being held without bond. the judge is expected to

testimony at the trial of oscar pistorius. from one of the last defense witnesses to take the stand. jeff rossen is in pretoria. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt. good morning to you. think about it. if there was an intruder in your home, what would you do? fight or turn around and flee? most of us would probably run. but not oscar pistorius. his defense centers around his disability. without legs he can't run away. trying to explain why he opened fire killing his girlfriend. oscar pistorius arriving today with his trial nearly over. and inside this morning, his defense team working on a big finish. pistorius says he shot and killed his girlfriend reeva steenkamp thinking she was an intruder. he ran toward the danger and fired. his doctor on the stand this morning. >> why not flee?

at that particular time? >> in this context, my lady, fleeing is not an option. the individual has no lower legs. so to flee is not an option. and if one finds one self without the ability to flee, the other option to fight. so to approach this danger is a physical phenomenon. >> reporter: that is called fight or flight. while you may run from danger, his brain tells him to fight back. not to mention his training as a runner. >> athletic coaches use gunshots and/or a loud clap on the hands during training to elicit a startle response. and the athlete is taught to react. >> reporter: but on cross examination, the prosecutor went after the doctor saying his

reflexes can't explain why he opened fire. >> in an incident like this where there's a startle, finding a gun, knowing where it is, getting the gun to fire, going to the bathroom, killing someone. would that still make sense to you? >> no. there would need to be more. >> reporter: on the face of it it seems to make sense. the fight or flight phenomenon. what impact does that have on the judge? >> well on the side of it it doesn't just give him right to randomly shoot four shots through a bathroom door without knowing who's behind the door. and that is exactly what he did. >> reporter: got quite heated today. the prosecutor and the doctor going back and forth at each

massachusetts and the cape cod. heavy rain across nantucket as well. good thing they're bumping up the fireworks delay to tonight. here's a look at the wind field. in orange here that's where winds are up between 40 to 74 miles per hour. then it moves out over the water. not much effect in the mid-atlantic. then we could see the tropical storm winds across the outer cape and nantucket as well. keep an eye out for the rip currents and storm surge. a storm surge of two to four feet would put it above where your normal sea level is. all that water comes on shore and most likely we will deal 7:36, good morning i'm meteorologist christina loren. taking a peek at a beautiful start over san jose. we're only going to end up in the 80s later on today. 78 degrees meanwhile along the planes. really comfortable conditions there. 63 for san francisco, and 85

was this what sent you to rehab? >> that's why i went to rehab. i had a disease. for a number of years. and i was ruining my life. >> what was happening? >> i was smoking crack. >> reporter: he was seen ranting about detractors in a cell phone video and was reported to be smoking crack in another. ford sought help two months ago. not long after telling matt that he only used crack when drunk. >> the best excuse i heard you give for using that crack cocaine was i was in a drunken stupor. and i'm wondering is that supposed to make anybody feel better? >> not at all. i can barely remember it. i was very, very inebriated. >> i was under the influence of

coast there. thanks to technology we do. that's where arthur is. a category 1. a million people make their way to the outer banks for the fourth of july weekend. many are being told maybe you want to delay your vacation. up in cape hatteras there's a mandatory evacuation. folks have been picking up supplies, have already run into the fact that batteries and lanterns are in short supply. and finally one of the big concerns not just here on the outer banks but up the east coast because arthur is going to be moving up the east coast here is the rip currents. the rip currents can be extremely dangerous. strongest recommendation is don't get in the water. enjoy the beach. of course it's going to be raining. that's going to affect a lot of the fireworks shows some of which have already been postponed. >> be safe there. the u.s. is called for stepped up security at overseas airports. intelligence officials are concerned al qaeda may be trying to develop a bomb that can get

through security undetected specifically on overseas flights headed to the united states. security sources believe militants in syria have been working with bomb makers in yemen who are determined to attack western targets. meantime the u.s. is warning those in uganda of a specific threat today to attack the airport. the call for tighter security does not affect u.s. airports. the mayor of murrieta, california, says he expects more undocumented immigrants to arrive there as early as tomorrow. earlier this week angry protesters forced three buses carrying immigrants to turn around. last night tayor heard from hundreds of residents and told them to be prepared for the arrival of more immigrants. because of what he described as a nationwide problem. well-known world war ii prisoner of war louis zamperini has died. hits his courageous and inspirational story was the

focus of the book "broken. " and an upcoming movie. he died after battling pneumonia at the age of 97. lou zamperini personified perseverance handling his life with grace and courage. zamperini was born in new york in 1917 to italian immigrant parents. he was a member of the 1936 u.s. olympic track team in berlin running the 5000 meters and became the youngest american qualifier ever in that event. during world war ii, his bomber was shot down in the pacific. he survived 47 days in a barrel raft and was later subjected to war crimes in a japanese p.o.w. camp. he was thought lost forever and declared ted as he recently told tom brokaw. >> down to 65 pounds from 155. that was -- it was heart breaking. i've never had a thought in my mind ever about giving up. >> reporter: and now decades later his story is being brought to the big screen by hollywood superstar angelina jolie. >> you train, you fight harder than those other guys and you

we pretend we have it all. every day you have to make a decision on whether you are going to be a wife or a mother. i am not sure they will say i have been a good mom. >> and we realize we are opening up a can of worms here. we found ourselves in the middle of this debate. i sat down with a top ceo. i got an awful lot of criticism for one question in particular. listen. >> you are a mom. i mentioned two kids. your kids said they will hold you accountable for one job. that is being a mom. given the pressures of this job at general motors, can do i both? >> i think i can. we have a great team and we are on the right path and taking accountability and i have a wonderful family and a supportive husband and i'm proud

my kids the way they are supporting me. >> i felt this was not a gender issue. this is a human issue of work and like balance. it's a parenting issue for men and women, moms and fathers. a question i ask myself every single day, but clearly it still touches a nerve. let's hear more about what she has to say. >> for a working woman, how am i going to take off 9:00 wednesday morning to go for coffee? my daughter will come home and say all the mothers were at the dance and you were not there, mom. the first few times i would die with guilt. i developed coping mechanisms. i said call the school and give me a list of mother who is were not there. she would say you were not there. i would say mrs. so and so was not there. i'm not the only mother. >> i like that strategy.

>> a couple of working mom who is dealt with the issues firsthand. martha stewart and katherine. what do you think? >> i think she is right about you can't have it all. you can try and i think you need to have that back up team at home if you are on a ceo path. you are a ceo, you have to have that back up team that knows how you want your children taken care of. you can't say that about the husband. they can't take care of your husband the way you should be. >> kathie lee? >> i think women can have it all. i was thinking about this in the car how grateful i am for everything in my life. i don't think you can have it all at the same time, but you can definitely learn to balance things. i was grateful to have a job after i had my children that i could take my children to work

with me. that's where the great blessing is, but i later chose to leave when my children needed more more. you have to decide what kind of joy you want in your life. do you want trophies on your call or your children? >> my mom reminded us that she gave up a career to raise us. it was black and white. now it's something that maybe you can do it all. >> in each family had itself to be a negotiation or a shared responsibility. i will feel great and i promised my wife it's your turn to take care of our daughter for a while. >> you tell them exactly what you are doing, they will respect you and help you get on with your career. i think so. >> she asked her daughters whether or not she was a good mom, they would say she wasn't. >> she also makes a point that the career clock and the

biological clock are counter forces and women have to figure out what's important and what's your priority. >> based on the comments and this may seem self serving, is it a taboo subject some. >> why would it be a taboo subject. >> male ceos don't get the question. if they were to say i am very upset i missed my son's prom and i think my kids are going to hold my accountable for one job and that's a father. yes, we would ask that question. >> why are you surprised about that question? >> something she had already said. it was a follow-up. you said it very, very respectfully. certn people are just very, very sensitive for their own reasons. you would have to ask them why. that was a very respectful question. >> matt's son's 13th birthday. >> i missed my son's 13th

we're back now. 8:47 with "today's" american story with bob dawson. this one begins on a farm pond in indiana and ends where you won't believe. >> reporter: lonny bedwell never let a handicap handicap him. the man is lights out blind, lives far from fast water. >> if it gets really windy, i might get a white cap on my pond.

>> reporter: but he decided one day to do something no blind person has ever done. paddle a kayak the entire length of the colorado river. 226 miles to the grand canyon. some of the most treacherous rapids in the world. not much white water near his home in indiana, so lonny practiced in his farm pond. learning to save himself whenever his kayak rolled over. guides said he'd have to do that a thousand times before they'd allow him down the colorado river. he did it 1500 times. >> there are two choices in life. live in pity and go nowhere or just live. >> reporter: perhaps that's why the blind man volunteers to work as a roofer back home in indiana. >> he's blind and on the roof. >> yeah, but he's pretty careful. we've actually had homeowners argue with you they don't believe he's blind. >> reporter: after all, he can

use a power saw. and ski down mountains. the former navy petty officer first class teaches other disabled veterans how to kayak. he served on a submarine, survived a war, only to lose his sight in a hunting accident three years to the day after he left active duty. his best friend tim hale mistakenly shot him in the head. >> it to this day is still the worst day of my life. >> reporter: the former marine medic tried to carry lonny through the dense forest. >> i said tim, i'll be dead before you get me out of here. >> reporter: tim propped him against a fallen tree and ran for help. >> he told me if i don't make it, tell my kids i love them. >> reporter: three young daughters. >> i burnt the vision of my

children's face in my mind. >> reporter: how you handle loss makes a big difference. bedwell decided to become more than a victim. the blind man became a beacon guiding tim hale from the darkness of what he'd done. >> he doesn't know, but he's helped me from me just watching him go on. . >> reporter: living life on his own terms. bedwell refused therapy at a veterans hospital for a dozen years until his last daughter was grown. locked in the darkness of his mind, lonny bedwell was once afraid to even mow his lawn. until his daughter taylor who was five at the time told him -- >> she said, daddy, i'll help you. i said all right, girl. if you've got the guts, let's try it. >> reporter: together they cut the grass. >> that little girl right there, my name's still daddy. to that little girl, i can still do anything in this world. >> reporter: finally with the

girls now gone, the single dad had time to do more than dream. a team of disabled veterans guided him down the colorado river. their voices like fashion horns warned of the danger. >> most kayakers have toe see where the rocks are. how do you do it? >> i told them not to tell me about them. >> reporter: bedwell's blindness was not an excuse. it helped him see more clearly than most. >> that's my boy! >> reporter: lonny's ride down the colorado put him into the history books. for "today," bob dawson, nbc news with an american story a long way from dugger, indiana. >> he is solid. gosh. >> he does more things blind than i do. >> all of us combined. >> you talk about not being defined by your disability. that guy's done it. >> nice. >> another feather in bob's cap as well. nicely done, bob.

blocked. look at the map. we have slowing developing at the coliseum. you can use international boulevard or eastbound 580. the northbound side is your typical commute direction. that's also slowing by this big crash and the distraction. and then over on the peninsula side, you're jammed up from brisbane into san francisco, because of that closure for northbound 280. the rest of your commute is light. back to the "today" show.

from nbc news this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist, and tamron hall. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. it's july the 3rd, 2014. fourth of july eve. great crowd on the plaza. i'm willie geist with tamron hall. al is off. natalie is making her way back from brazil. a lot of people talking about the weather. a lot of people traveling. if you're on the east coast in popular preparing to hit the roads or airports. evacuations are underway in parts of north carolina. we've got a live picture here of

kill devil hills, north carolina. dylan, is this the calm before the storm here? >> oh, it certainly is. what are the chances? fourth of july and that's when we'll see a hurricane hit the outer banks of north carolina. everyone on vacation being evacuated. this is a deceiving picture. this looks nice and calm but we are already getting reports of dangerous rip currents in these waters. because the storm is sitting just off about exactly 345 miles southwest of cape hatteras, north carolina. but it is starting to churn up the water. you can't see the rip currents. although we won't see a whole lot of rain and wind into areas like long island, we are still looking at rip currents to be a threat up and down the entire east coast. because it is such a big holiday weekend to spend at the beaches, that is one thing we have to keep in mind. it will stay as a category one storm as it crosses over the outer banks by early friday morning. then look at how quickly it moves. by 2:00 p.m. friday, we're starting to see some

improvements weatherwise. not so much in the water. then we have to keep a close eye on nantucket. you could see the effects of this storm. but this whole area right in here, not really going to see a whole lot of wet weather from the storm. that's going create showers and storms. fireworks look okay. i'll get into more detail on that in a bit. >> we'll get your full forecast in just a few minutes. major rain and lightning up in the northeast last night. check out some of these photographs from new york city. this is a picture of lightning striking. there's some still images, too, that will blow your mind. striking 1 world trade and a bunch of other places around new york city. >> around the same time hit last night. >> and thunder that k roed buildings around here. meantime there's a wildfire now raging near napa wine country. the popular destination for people this weekend. aaa says about 41 million

americans will travel 50 miles or more this weekend. about 85% of people traveling will be hitting the road. air travel expected to see a slight decrease from last year. a lot of weather and travel out there. >> what are you going to do? >> we'll be here working tomorrow. >> yeah. >> then hang out with the family. grilling. of course i'm grilling. i'm always grilling. >> willie got a new grill, and he's so amped up. >> i had this whole thing planned last night and then basically a hurricane hit. and i was, like, i'm going out as soon as -- no you're not going to stand out with the metal grill with the lightning. >> she had to tell you? >> i had my hoot up. it made me so sad. come on, weather. >> he's just getting started. you know what? this story caught our attention yesterday. hall of famer warren sapp, great

football player, he's very vocal. we can honestly say that. good guy. but he is never shy about giving his opinion. we know that. so he was at a florida sports bar on tuesday and he chose not to leave a tip to his waitress. a copy of his receipt was posted on facebook saying he left no tip on the $69 bill. but he wrote boys don't tip. warren sapp later went on twitter to explain that his server, the server kept calling him a boy. and he said that boys don't tip. if you're calling me a boy, i don't have to explain. and he explained the service was so bad he left before the world cup soccer game that was supposed to start at 4:00. the server defended her service. said it was busy. and that's where that little tiff ends. well, another tipping story also made head loolines.

someone just fell behind us. an ohio waitress was fired on monday after complaining about a bad tip on facebook. not realizing the tipper was her facebook friend. her facebook post read, if you come to a restaurant and spend $50, don't be a bleep and only leave a $5 tip. seriously? this is how i make a living. that's what she said. texas roadhouse told us she was not fired because of that but because she violated the policy by calling a guest a derogatory name. two issues here. >> both different. >> but a lot of people have gone onto social media to vent. we see where a waiter or waitress is tipped poorly and they put it on blast. and if you're getting bad service, are you obligated to had tip? >> i'm a notorious over-tipper. if the service is not great, i'll give a lower tip. if she's rude, he's within his

right. i'm against the tip shaming thing though. why are you going on twitter and facebook showing somebody's credit card receipt, showing who they are and shaming them that way? i think what he objected to if you read between the lines, being called boys. she said to that, boys, what are we having today. she said it would have been awkward to say men, what are we having today. they got off to a bad start. >> and he went on to blame his view of it. it sounds obviously they have different perspectives on this. but the issue of posting that receipt with his credit card information, private information on there not cool. but i am torn. i'm like you. i don't want anybody to feel like i mistreated them. i was a waitress. hardest job i had. but my mom i took her to dinner, this lady was so mean to us. i thought she was beyond rude. and i wrote her a note and said i deliberately not leaving a tip and here's why i'm doing this. blah blah blah.

and i signed my name. and she added a tip. and we got our credit card bill -- she added it herself. we had to call the restaurant. and she was fired. and i felt terrible for that, but she doctored the tip. it reaffirmed to me she wasn't a nice person. but you are torn. if you are taking your family out to whatever restaurant, the male is 60 bucks and you've been treated poorly, you're like i'm splurging and i've got to give you the cash. >> if they're rude and confrontational, no tip. if the service is slow or something and maybe it's not the server's fault. >> yeah. exactly. and a lot of people will go over and explain, we're busy. the kitchen a tied up. that's an effort. >> if they're rude, you don't have to tip. okay. this clip is going to make you very happy right now. it's just an amazing piece of videotape. jerry remmy is the long-time famous announcer for the boston

approved an ordinance requiring pot clubs to give some marijuana away to low-income patients. the pot shops will have to hand out 2% of their weed each year to poor members. the ordinance defines low income as $32,000 or under for one person or $46,000 and under for a family of four. the ordinance may become final in august. we'll have a look at weather and traffic right after this break.

well, good morning, everyone. it's 9:56. i'm scott mcgrew. investigators trying to find out why a backyard fire pit exploded while several teenage girls were roasting marshmallows. two of the girls were taken to

never had any problems with the fire pit before. while firefighters were at the scene of that explosion, the emergency dispatch center in santa clara county was down. the building did not completely lose power, but the center lost the ability to dispatch ambulances and fire trucks by computer. at one point, workers had to use radios in the parking lot to manually dispatch ambulances to emergencies. after 90 minutes, the problems were fixed. that ended about midnight. we'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break.
