from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone. i'm not going to ask what you're doing up at 4:30 in the morning on the fourth of july, but i'm scott mcgrew. >> you're getting the pork bites on the smoker. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon is getting her butt on the smoker, hopefully. >> i feel like i'm always in that position for some reason. this morning temperatures in the upper 50u7, we have a gorgeous day shaping up for you. we're going to be in the 70s, low 80s again for the south bay, and as we let freedom ring tonight, temperatures will be comfortable. we're also expecting a clear shot of the fireworks from most

spots. the one place that i am watching, mantd be that great this year. that's coming up in my next report, now back to you kris and scott. even though firefighters only have about half of the wild fire kburning in napa -- burning in napa county surrounded, most forced out are back home. that was started on tuesday. about 456% contained this morning. it's tough for firefighters to get to the flames because of the steep hillsides and unstable land. they made progress yesterday as the temperatures cooled and the wind died down a bit. now the fire has already devoured 4300 acres, but fire officials do not think it'll spret much more. yesterday evacuation orders for hundreds of people were lifted allowing some people who left two nights sleeping on cots to go home. for one couple though, going home will never be the same again. the bennett's home was one of two that burned down in the fire. gary bennett built that house 35

years ago and he and his wife affectionately called it their little house on the prairie. they were home when the fire started on tuesday afternoon. >> got my wife out there at 2:00. fire crews came in. engine 1498, oh man. 35 years yesterday you know. i don't like it. >> tough to watch. the bennett's say that they owe a lot to the engine company and he wants to thank them for saving him and his wife. the release of a man known as the pillow case rapist is on told because of a virus outbreak at the state hospital where he's been held. christopher hubbard was supposed to be released to live in lake los angeles this week despite protests from people who live there. but the facility where he's being helded is now under quarantine because of a norovirus outbreak. hubbard admitted to raping more

than 40d women in the '70s and the '80s. now he's not released for nearly three weeks. chp launched an investigation after an officer was caught on camera beating a woman on the side of the freeway. look at this video here. it was posted on youtube on wednesday. shows an officer grabbing the arm of a woman who walked on to a median between freeway lane an onramp in los angeles. the woman appeared to resist, then the officer throws her to the ground, throwing punches. chp has not released any information about the incident, but a speak spokesperson said in part, every time there is a use of force by our officer, there is a review conducted to determine whether the use of force was appropriate. it goes on to say, since there is an ongoing investigation, it would be premature to comment on this specific video segment without releasing the entire incident. jurors in bryan stow's stifl case will take the holiday weekend off before returning to slib rations on monday.

they were unable to reach a verdict yesterday. the sixth day of deliberations, the judge has been telling them to keep trying. among other questions, the jury is being asked to determine if the dodgers and former owner frank mccourt will negligent. and whether that negligence played a role in stow's beating. his family says the team and the courts did not provide enough security or proper lighting at dodgers stadium when stow was attacked back in 2011. apartment building caught fire when a pro pain tank exploded. it happened at a building near brighton and mcarthur in oakland last night. the fire department tweeted out these pictures that shows smoke coming out of the doors and the windows. six people were displaced from three apartments and firefighters had to rescue a dog and a cat. investigators are looking into what caused the propane tank to explode. celebrating its independence from styrofoam food containers. restaurants will have to find somewhere else to package food.

stores will be banned from selling products made out of styrofoam including foam ice chests. the ban applies to farmers and at festivals. more than a dozen cities in santa clara county banned styrofoam, most recently mountain view. high fire danger and illegal fireworks are shutting down several popular parks on the peninsula e this weekend. parks ace long the san mateo shorelines are popular places to watch fireworks, tonight they'll be offlimits. for the first time ryder and aquatic park will be closed. meantime parkside will be offlimits as usual. police say they're not taking any chances. >> there's a lot of dry grass out there. the park rangers have seen uprise in illegal fireworks use. >> they have stepped up patrols. all three will shut down tonight at 6:00. a lot of people are hoping to return that massive fireworks

show in san jose will cut down on illegal fireworks tonight. >> that would be nice. for the first time in six years, the rotary club will light up the sky above san jose. this is video of a previous show. it was canceled back nor 2008 because of a lack of funds. this year the rotary club teamed up with the city and santa clara county to make it happen. coming up, "today in the bay's" bob redell will be live to show us how crews are preparing. >> if you want to pig out, head to the bacon festival of america. it starts today at 3:00 and goes until 9:00. and if one day is not enough for you, go back for more tomorrow. >> more bacon? >> this year's festival is being held at plaza decesar chavez. 11 and under are free. here's the things to do at the festival. visit bacon food booths, bacon merchandise, watch fireworks,

scope out a wrestling exhibition, kick off dust square dancing and more. well the south bay world war ii veteran who became a video star earlier this year is going to be get another honor today. >> he cap churled the hearts with this video of him during the 408 k run in san jose back in march. you can see runners actually leaving the race course to shake his hand. this morning, bell welcome the grand marshal of the rose, white, and blue parade. he is expected to be in that classy uniform riding in the side car of a motorcycle driven by his son. >> the parade starts at 10:00 this morning at lincoln high school. land on the al mee dna at panther issuing avenue. that's where there'll be a picnic and festival. we're going to expect as many as 200,000 people to crowd around pier 39 in san francisco, but why? well, of course, to watch the fireworks over the bay.

thick, low cloud cover moving over the san francisco bay. but here in the south bay it looks really good. ocean beach this morning, starting out with moisture, a lot of moisture making its way out to senole, it's a good sign, especially to the fire fight that is happening up in napa county. winds are calm this morning. nop wind to talk about in the area, and the humidity is up to 96%. firefighters have a good opportunity this morning to knock that thing down. 68 degrees along the east shore for today. 79 on the peninsula, and 83 degrees in the south bay, staying right about average for this time of year. if you got outside yesterday at 3:00 or 4:00. that's the where we are this time of year. so i can tell you, today, it's going to be nice and then that heat is going to intensify. it's going to dry out as well as we head throughout the weekend. we really, really hope that they can make progress out thereto on the fire up in napa county tonight. now san jose, beautiful conditions this evening. 9:00 p.m., 66 degrees, and i

just to want say thank you, usually in the days leading up to the fourth of july. i am violently woken up out my sleep by the fireworks in the nabtd. i did not hear any this year which means people are concerned about the drought conditions and i want to the tip my hat and say thank you, we appreciate that. it is dangerous this year. so the good sign so far, people are heeding the warning, back to you kris and scott. mike's off today, as christina mentioned, parts of interstate 280 are closed this morning. northbound lanes are shut down from the 101 interchange to near at&t park. the section of 280 will be closed until monday morning so that crews can repair joints to make the freeway safer during an earthquake. the giants are now out of town, but the closure will affect your plans if you're headed into the city. northbound 280 is closed, caltrans says to use highway 181 instead. fifa launches a new investigation into a brazilian superstar. hurricane arthur makes land

week, homeland security will try to deliver bus loads of undocumented families from central america to a holding facility there. last time their buses were blocked by protesters commanding these people on board be deported immediately instead of being held in the facility. the families are being moved from an overcrowded facility in texas. officials have not said exactly when the buses will arrive, but we will bring you updates as soon as they're available. now own ore damian trujillo is in mary yet this morning, he'll have a live report tonight. meanwhile the fourth of july welcome the first day several american soldiers can call dhemss american citizens -- themselves american citizens. >> the constitution of the united states. >> president obama will welcome inl grant soldiers, reservists, and spouses at a naturalization ceremony at the white house. the u.s. military allows foreign

nationals to enlist. the president's done this nearly every fourth of july he's been in office and today will be the third naturalization ceremony he's presided over this year. now hurricane arthur making land fall overnight. the storm hit the north carolina shore reaching 100 miles per hour, now a category 2 hurricane. the state's governor is urging those who did not evacuate to be now stay safe, but my are not concerned. >> the wind is going to be bad, but it'll be okay. our house is still standing. we've been coming here for 20 years ago, we'll be latter. >> meantime shelters opened as counties declared state of emergency. coming up in a half hour, we'll have a live report from north carolina and have a closer look at that situation. in the men tile, our weather looking pretty good for a fourth of july. let's check in why with christina. >> looking great, good morning to you, happy independence day as we say happy birthdayed to this great nation. we have gorgeous weather and

everybody who came into town to enjoy the fourth of july, i don't think you're going to be disappointed this year, 56 degrees in san francisco. 54 in half-moon bait. let's talk about what's going down in san jose, although i have to tell you right now, we have all the big parties covered this morning, and the weather as. are well -- as well. 73 degrees at 10:00 a.m. for the parade in san jose. you want to head to the alameda, at 2:00 p.m., festival and picnic. and firework goes off, look at that temperature at 9:00 p.m. 70 degrees, clear sky, hard to beat that the in san jose. as we head throughout the rest of the bay area, as you can see, temperatures are going to be kind of all over the place, but not too hot, and that is the important, important fact that could bring to the table. 79 degrees in the planes, and 64 degrees in san francisco. television hotter last year. 68 on the east shore, 85 for the north bay today and the hot spot, we'll billion out in the

you're watching "today in the bay". a little fourth of july magic for you new morning. boston celebrating our nation's independence day a day early. the city held the boston pop's fourth of july celebration on the 3rd of july because hurricane arthur is bringing heavy rain and strong winds today. in fact police cleared out the spectators right after the show because of rain and lightning had already started. now closer to home, a number of bay area communities getting ready for their own fourth of
