park middle school campus, that was wednesday night. there was no damage nor injuries, but firefighters say it was set off by fire, illegal fireworks and reminder of how dangerous they can be year. back here in san mateo, both ryder and seal point parks are closed where there's a lot of dry grass or what could turn into fuel should people set off illegal fireworks and spark a fire. >> had such of a dry winter, a lot of dry grass, it's a major fire hazard. the park rangers have seen a major uptick in illegal fireworks. it made sense to close them early this year. >> reporter: and in a lead-up to today, firefighters in san jose say they've had to put out fires started by fireworks which are illegal there. the san jose fire department has added staffing today through sunday. that includes three engines, two brush fire controls, and additional fire inspectors. now statewide, already cal fire has got more than 2700 fires.
5:34 am
and that is 900 more than the average for this time of year in the last five years. you can see why there is such a concern. back here at san mateo at ryder park, not only are the signs up, but they will be out here enforcing the closures. live in san mateo this morning, stefanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we're going to expect as many as 200,000 people that will crowd around pier 39 in san francisco to watch the fireworks over the bay. event starts this afternoon but the fireworks display will not start of course until the sun goes down. what would be the point of starting earlier? organizers say if you don't plan on attending, you want to avoid the area altogether. there are several roads that will be closed and several bus lines that will be rerouted. city leaders hope that the return of a massive fireworks show in san jose will help cut down on illegal fireworks tonight. >> bob redell live in san jose preparation for the big show has been going on bob since about
5:35 am
1:00 this morning. >> reporter: yes kris and scott, we been here long enough, its been a while since san jose had a big fireworks show. its been six years, 2008 was the last show that the city put on this. they stopped doing it of course because it was too much money. well it's back this year, and the rotary club of san jose is the one putting it on. the rotary centennial fireworks show is tonit at 9:30 here on discovery meadows. same location in year's past. the fireworks launched from between the discovery and the park. this is going to be like any year's past, ones when they used to have in 2008, you can't expect a large crowd which are translates into you want develop get here early and they have urging that you take public transit specifically vta which has a stop right here. vta will be running special service just for tonight and combine the fact that this is a friday. it's the start of a weekend. it's quite possible since it's not in the middle of the week

5:38 am
right now, you will be able to see the fireworks in the city. we're going to have a clearer shot down here in the south bay. basically a repeat performance as we head throughout the overnight hours. we'll see the low clouds return, but mostly at coast, and nice and clear in your inland valley spots. that's going to be the best place to view the fireworks. as per usual, don't take a scientists to tell you that. 83 degrees in the south bay, 68 degrees in the east shore, i do like to refer to myself as a scientist. as we head throughout the day, couple things, temperatures will climb. i'll show you that in the next report, right now back to you kris and scott. >> you are a scientist my friend. mike's off today, reminder, parts of interstate 280 in san francisco are shut down this morning. northbound lanes closed from the 101 interchange to near at&t park. that section of 280 will be closed until monday morning at 5:00 so that crews can repair joints to make freeways safer during an earthquake. giants are out of town so that eases congestion a bit. the closure will affect plans if

5:43 am
reservists who have served this country, and are now becoming u.s. citizenings today. it's all happening at the white house this morning. this is something that the president's done, it's a tradition now, he's done it for several years and he is going to hold that naturalization ceremony. the other thing that the government subpoena doing to have an affect on what you're seeing in marietta is to get messages to the parents in central america not to send their kids here. especially alone. it's a dangerous trip. a million dollars of tax payer money is being invested in a campaign, billboards, tv ads, radio adsed in central america and in major u.s. cities with big immigrant populations to try to get that message across. >> thank you very much tracy. in the men time, let's bring a reporter live from mir yet that, good morning, jacob. >> reporter: yes, good morning, and when we talk about everybody's waiting for the bus. everybody, border patrol does
