nbc bay area nupz begins with -- news begins with breaking news. good morning i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting this morning officers near the intersection of brook dell and livesdale avenue just a few blocks away from the cow palace. >> stephanie chuang is at the scene, give us the latest here. >> reporter: good morning, it is early on, we don't know too much, we know police confirmed this is a homicide and there will be homicide investigators on their way here shortly, but to give you perspective, we are very close to the cow palace on the border of san francisco and daly city. you can see a few patrol cars

and san francisco police. they've had flashlights out this morning. we believe this happened around 3:00 this morning. one person we know is dead. and to the right of you is where police have focussed their investigation. again with flashlights out, at least half a doz looking around between buildings, we do not know officially the jenlder of the victim nor age, personal identity, but this neighborhood, we've got neighbors who are pretty nervous i would say. we spoke with one woman within the last half hour who said she was on the phone with the man who thought it might be his son because he can't reach him. she had had heard when she thought were fireworks around 3:00 this morning. again because it was just the fourth of july, that was her natural reaction, but of course she saw the police come and realized that was not the case. so again, we know for sure that this is a homicide, one victim. but we don't know much else. we will be out here waiting for

san francisco police to give us the very latest. live, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> we'll be checking in, thank you, much. let's get a check of your forecast with christina loren. >> hey, happy monday everybody. hope floi you had a great weekend. we have a hot day ahead, today is the only day we're expecting the triple digits. as we get into the next couple days, temperatures will cool off, for today, triple digit heat out in the extreme east bay. the tri-valley, and yeah we're looking warm here in the south bay. we'll get close to 90 degrees, not quite breaching that 90 degree mark. as we head throughout the week, temperatures will steadily cool off. we'll take you through the changes. right now let's check that drive, here's mike inouye. >> good morning folks. big alert in fremont, this is a major surface street. let me talk you through the maps here. padre, that is a thorough fare, that is closed between peralto, it is the same roadway towards

sequoya. it is also called 84. gets confusing. if you don't have to use the surface streets, don't worry about it, on to and off of 880 are moving smoothly. the rest of the bay moves smoothly again, we'll check what's going on. few hours for that closure and traffic into and out of san francisco is moving smoothly right now. i'll let you handle the reason why we're worried about it the. traffic in san francisco, back to normal after crews opened a stretch of interstate 280 ten hours ahead of schedule. the northbound lanes had been shut down since wednesday so crews would replace hinges, make the road more seismically sound. origin nay it was to -- originally it was to oez ten minutes from now, but they finished way early. >> we were able to accelerate the schedule. everything worked fine. we have no problems, no accidents, no mechanical break downs. >> labor day, we do it all over

again so that crews can make more repairs. firefighters say the wild fire that has already charred 6400 acres in yolo county has enough fuel to still grow significantly. that's because the area has not burned for at least two decades. it started on the fourth of july near the dam and is only 30% contained. crews are working with dangerous hills, brittle brush and extreme temperatures. one firefighter was hurt when the bulldozer he was driving flipped. his condition this morning is unknown. about 40 homes are under evacuation and highway 128 was closed as flames got close, but that danger has passed, at least for now. the evacuations were lifted, but nearby campgrounds are still closed. three bay area crews are now joining that fire fight. the alameda county, fremont, and al by in a fire department sent about 17 firefighters in total to sow la know and yol counties

over the weekend. many crews had come from another wild fire burning in pope county, or pope valley in napa county. that fire started on tuesday and has burned 4300 acres. hundreds of homes were evacuated, but everyone is back home. the fire, 85% contained. two homes and seven small outbuildings were destroyed in the fire, but one of the homes was evacuate at the time. there are still more than 300 firefighters monitoring the perimeter and putting out hot spots. san jose police are investigating the store where a man bought an illegal firework then blew off one of his hands. the injury happened on the fourth of july near castle park, as they were celebrating the fourth of july. family members say ortiz was lighting the explosive when it sploesed prematurely. it's described as a professional grade firework. had to have his right hand amputated, lost three fingers on his left. people with small children and smam pets in one san mateo

are being warned to be extra watchful after two moin lion sightings in a week. the second happened over the weekend. it is believed to be the same mountain lion. also over the weekend, someone found the carcass of a deer believed to be have been dinner for the big cat. >> animal control took the carcass away and took the fawn way, it was a baby, who was i don't know, a month old or so. >> in may, mountain lion was captured lurking near an apartment building. a tracking collar reveals that that cat was hiding behind bushes, watching quite a few pedestrians and bicyclists for hours. bay area puma project thinks they are coming closer to civilization because they are looking for water. bart extension could be pushed back by a year and a half because of a spat between the vta and the city of milpedas. they planned to dig a trench

turned the road over the next eight months. that would mean closing the road during reduction. -- construction. the city denied the work permit. told them to do the job without closing the entire road. so, that part of the project will likely take much longer. the track had been scheduled to open in late 2017. local leaders will hold a town hall meeting today to talk about getting care at the palo alto va hospital amid allegations that veterans died at other facilities. veterans who have been treated at the palo alto hospital are encouraged to share their experiences. this starts at 1:00 at the auditorium building. the hospital hopes to improve operations. palo alto facility distanced itself from the phoenix facility which reportedly delayed giving care to veterans in need resulting in at least 40 deaths. similar problems were reported at va hospitals nationwide.

the facility in palo alto held meetings with selected officials in hopes of letting them know that the peninsula facility is unlike others in the country. according to the palo alto weekly, established patients have to wait five to six days to be seen at the palo alto facility. ho hope and feel like i do, say that was a great weekend, i'm ready to go back to work. it was fantastic. now back to work and back to work forecast. ♪ i feel like you do . >> it's going to be hot. once we're done with monday and for a lot of reasons we want to put monday behind us, we will start that decline in temperatures. 59 degrees in mountain view to kick off date, 53, good morning wine country. 52 in half-moon bay, 59 degrees in san jose. cloud cover ahead, enough to keep the temperatures in the 80s. meanwhile, plenty to go around in the city this morning which is great news because that's going to keep your temperature down later on today.

look at your numbers, 88 for the south bay. 81 degrees, comfortable day shaping up on the peninsula. we'll hit about 88 degrees. that's going to be the warm spot in the north bay. 65 for san francisco, the east shore is at 80 degrees, watch this. watch the difference between the east shore temperature and what we have coming your way out in the tri-valley. 95 degrees, so it's going to be warm out there, but like i said before, temperatures steadily dropping as we get into your workweek. i'll show you the numbers coming up right now, let's check your drive and say happy monday, it is happy because you're back with us. >> thank you, christina. it is happy because things are back to normal for the golden gate bridge, which means fog. not normal, not unexpected. we see sometimes fog and from christina's forecast we knew to expect that. right there it'll be an issue on the north side of the bridge. looking at an easy drive. and back to normal also for 280 northbound, if scott told you a few minutes ago that reopened ten hours earlier than they

antidepressanted or at least earlier than we said. that's good news and no problems into our out of san francisco right now. we will take you over to fremont where we continue to follow this, in fact maybe for the next three or four hours, the closure for paseo padre, that's a major roadway, but it is for cross town traffic and that's closed between peralta and thorn ton. i just mentioned it is an offrampb and it is open. major crash is what's caused all this activity going on. we'll track that, meanwhile on the peninsula, palo alto shows you an easy drive both north and south, back to you. >> thank you mike. more people were arrested for driving drunk over the holiday weekend compared to last. chp officers arrested nearly 1,200 drivers since thursday evening, up 22% from last year. in santa clara county, various authorities made 33 arrests, and daly city police report 13 dui arrests in san mateo county.

the bay." the affordable care act is under fire once again this morning, this time because of a lawsuit brought by a wisconsin senator. senator ron johnson is challenging the provision forcing congressional members to obtain government subsidized health insurance through small business exchanges. he says since the government employed millions of people, representatives are not eligible for the exchanges. federal attorneys are now asking the judge to toss out the case saying johnson has not shown how the rules hurt him. some tech workers pushing back against the government's h 1 v visa program for a look at that the and the trading day ahead after the long weekend, courtney reagan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott, futures are lower as verss return from the holiday weekend. dow closing above 17,000 on thursday following a better than expected jobs report to sell the economy and 288,000 workers in june, unemployment drop to 6.1%. there's no major data today, we will get the minutes, and

of you have to work outdoors. and i tip my hat toout for those of you who have to do that in heat like this. now temperatures will be warm today as high pressure builds in for us, temperatures will climb by about five to ten degrees from where we ended up yesterday and translates to 70s and 80s. even around the inner bay it's going to be warm today. meanwhile we'll see the triple digits out in the extreme east bay, warm here in san jose closer or it 90 degrees for your monday. 88 degrees in the south bay, 80 degrees on the east shore. 65 for san francisco today. and 88 degrees in the north bay. i told you it was going to be warm out in the tri-valley. livermore at 95 degrees as we get into the next couple days, we're going to gradually, and i mean gradually cool you off, but you can see from the live picture this morning, we don't have a lot of low cloud cover in your inland valley spots. a little bit here in san jose, that's about it. . here we go, 88 degrees for monday, tuesday down to 84, we'll be enjoying the upper occupy to low 80s here by the end of the week. overall not too bad. just a couple hot days to get

through, back to you for now scott and kris. >> all right, thank you very much, christina. new this morning israeli police arrested six jewish suspects in the killing of a palestinian teenager who was abducted and burned aid live last week. meanwhile, hamas is vowing revenge for the deaths of nine of its members killed in israeli air strikes overnight. israel carried out air strikes on at least 14 so-called parasites in retaliation for spikes and attacks from gaza. hamas which rules gaza says quote, the enemy will pay a tremendous price. for the past week, the region has been honored because of the killings of three israeli teenagers and the apparent revenge killing of a palestinian teen who has family in the south bay. well history at the vatican this morning. the pope met with victims of sexual abuse by priest for the first time. now the scandal certainly tarnished the image of the catholic church. pope francis met with the victims from britain, ireland, and jimmy. the pope has decleared zero

tolerance for any clrge members abusing children. pope benedict met with victims several times, but never in the vatican itself. the first trial connected to the boston marathon bombings is set to begin today. prosecutors say a 20-year-old man and his friend went to dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room and took a backpack. the two took that backpack containing fireworks after tsarnaev was deemed a suspect. neither man is accused of having anything to do with the bombing in last year's marathon, but they are facing charges of ab instruction of justice. meanwhile, tsarnaev's trial gets under way in november. right here, get out of the water. >> keep swimming. >> keep swimming. >> boy, swimming for his life, a man attacked by a juvenile great white in southern california over the weekend. now he is telling his story. yesterday steve robles came face to face with one of the men who rescued him. he heard the screams for help from the surf board rental camp that he was working nonmanhattan

welcome back at 4:53, we have breaking news in la las scotas. bob redell is live in the area with the latest. it is, i can see it behind you. >> reporter: it is, and there's ban lot of flames popping up through the roof. you can see the santa clara county fire department has done a good job of suppressing that right now. this is a fire that's been going on for the past 30 minutes. we believe this is the backside of the restaurant. the front side being to the right side of your screen. this being the backside. there's a delivery area. one of the issues that had been

a problem for a fire department is that when they arrive, the gas meter lines started catching fire. you have unfortunately a tremendous source of flames there, but we've seen pge out here, it appears they've been able to turn that off. this is a two alarm fire, they this h their first units arrive which are just located down the street. they realize this is a bigger deal than first expected. they call for that second alarm. they have several firefighters out here. you can see the closure on the roof where they're trying to again get in there, vent it, and get to the source of the fire. there was one firefighter who was hurt, apparently he femme over one of the hose lines while fighting this fire, had an injury to it looks like his wrist, he is being treated here on the scene, and the bahhalon chief says he's going to be okay. this fire is not under control yet. it's hard to determine whether this section of the restaurant has been destroyed or severely damaged, but you can see, once
