5:00 am
have coming to your microclimate in just moments. some of that weather affecting your view of the roadway this morning, we'll track that as well as the new crash over the tri-valley. we'll bring you that update coming up. and looking live at downtown san jose, a lovely start to what is going to be a scorcher on this monday, july 7th, this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." i'm kris sanchez. laura zbaurk that you have morning. >> i'm scott mcgrew. let's get to the breaking news. popular restaurant on fire in last gatos. firefighter hurt and all this happening at a famous restaurant, good morning, bob. >> reporter: manrica restaurant in las gatos. within the past 15 minutes, this fire has extended into the attic which makes it of course much
5:01 am
harder for the santa clara county fire department to fight. that's right, you have the firefighters up there on the roof. i can't tell if they've started ventilating yet. they've definitely been flushing the area with water. part of the challenge earlier is if you look down to the left, there's a line meter there, and that was fuelling a lot of the fire, pge was able to get that gas meter shut off, the battalion chief informed me they are going to have to stay, they being pge, will have to dig into the street so they can access the main gas line. they want to shut that off as well to be on the safe side. they don't know what damage was done to the august zil ri line that was sent to the restaurant. . appears that the front of the restaurant is not what's on fire. it looks like it's the back of the restaurant. a building that's attached to the front of the restaurant. this started around 4:20 this morning, someone walking by saw the flames, called 911. fortunately the station is just a block or two away.
5:02 am
they were here on the scene quickly. you mentioned the one firefighter was hurt. the chief terms us that he tripped over a hose line while fighting this fire. either looked like the rest are possibly his ribs were hurt. he's been treated on the scene and as far as i can tell, i don't know, he might have been transported, but he is expected to be okay. here you can see the santa clara county firefighters are trying to access where you can see that flame is now popping up throw through the roof. eernt to vent it so they can get more water in there or put water on it and put it out. i'm not sure if that's exactly, it looks like, because of the color of flame, it looks like, maybe it, might be another gas line. it's hard for me to tell, and frankly i don't know what i'm talk abouting when it comes to fire science, basened on the facts -- based on the fact that the color is odd. i'm not sure what that is burning. again, two-alarm fire here at manrica restaurant in las gatos.
5:03 am
one firefighter freet treated for minor injury. two alarm fire is, they don't know what the cause is. this is going to be the first priority. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you admitted this is not necessarily, you don't know everything, it appears they don't have the gas off. pge will have to dig to turn off the gas. >> reporter: they said they had the gas lines in the building off. the issue is the main line. they want to get the line underneath the street off. they're not saying that that's burning right now. the gas of the building is shut off, i was just surmising that, maybe there was another gas line, again, i don't know. >> clearly a restaurant, one wait or the other, is vaunt on fire. bob re vel, we're going to check -- redell, thank you very much. breaking news in san francisco where police are on the scene of a deadly shooting just a few blocks away from the cow palace. officers are collecting evidence near the intersection of brookdale and blithesdale

avenues. stephanie chuang joins us live with the latest, stephanie, now they're confirming that somebody did die in the shooting, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kris, we know that much. it is a homicide this morning. it happened around 3:00 in the morning. also, now on scene we have both people from the medical examiner's office as well as homicide investigators. police officers first got here just after 3:00 this morning, there's also a tarp covering the victim of this homicide, just around the corner. you do see lights, a lot of flashlights and investigators taking pictures as well, and looking for any evidence. we did speak with a young woman this morning who believes she knows the victim. she says she woke up after 3:00 hearing loud noises. >> at like the around 3:00 this morning, i heard a lot of gunshots, which i thought they were fireworks. >> reporter: now she believes again she knows the victim, but we do not have official confirmation upon police just yet, again right now they are still in the very preliminary
5:05 am
stages of this homicide investigation. again in just the last half hour, both people from the medical examiner's office as well as homicide investigators arrived on scene and they are right now in the thick of it trying to figure out what exactly happened. young woman we spoke with though is out here along with a couple other people, neighbors who look worried as well as some people who appear to be family members or at least people who know this possible victim here. and that is the very latest, san francisco police will update us later this morning, live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you stephanie. just into the news room, magnitude 7.1 quake shook southern mexico. hit just before 4:30 this morning near the guatemala border. buildings and light posts swayed. adds of right now, there are no injury or significant damage to report. meanwhile, new this morning, the chief prosecutor in the murder trial of oscar pistorius said the physician who testified

5:31 am
battalion chief, they just got into the building, what are they finding? >> reporter: within the past 30 mirns they got into the building. this is the kitchen portion of the manresa restaurant. if you're not familiar, it's a very popular restaurant, highly rated as you mentioned, two michelin stars and they made enindustry so they can get in there and do knock down on the ceiling. the idea is to ventilate this and it seems like they've been successful because we're not seeing the flames coming out of the roof. you can see the roof, what's left of it. it gives you an extent of how big the fire was. we're not seeing the flames, not suggesting they're aren't flamed in, but we're not seeing them as dramatic as earlier. we're seeing white smoke which means the fire department is.cc a good job of pufting the fire out. now this fire came in, by a call to 911 from someone walking by, it was around 4:00 this morning. the fire department tells us
5:32 am
just have a station 100 yards away. they were here on the scene very quickly. and when they arrived on the scene, they realized immediately they were going to need back-up. they called far second alarm. when they arrived on the scene, what they saw was a massive fire on the backside. on the oaks tier your of the building, apparently at gas meter. and here's what the chief recently had to say about that. >> the visually impressive part at the beginning was the fact that the gas meter was free burning. a second alarm was called, we're going need more help. our hazmat unit came to secure the gas meter, but as the heat rises and it's right under the eve of the building, as you can see behind me, gas rose was on fire, heated up into the attic and started a fire in the attic. >> reporter: what the santa clara county fire department is not sure about is whether the gas meter was the source or was there another source that spread to the gas meter. it's too early to make that decision. they have gotten the gas line shut off.
5:33 am
pge is out here to make sure if they were needed that they could come in and assist, right now, that gas line is shut off. you have about 35 firefighter ts out here. you mention one firefighter was hurt. he was hurt when he tripped on some debris early on in the fire fight. he was taken to the hospital, possibly with a rib injury, but he's expected to be okay. unfortunately for the manresa, the back portion where the kich season located, severely damaged, the front portion of the restaurant where we believe the dining area is, we're not sure if there's any damage to that section, see seems from our point of view at least the flames are contained at the backside. not sure about smoke and water daniel to the front side if any at all. again, to alarm fire at the manresa restaurant here in downtown. the fire department, especially within the last 30 minutes made tremendous progress as far as knocking down that flame here. the one firefighter taken to the hospital. that person's going to be okay.
5:34 am
reporting live here in la las gatos, bob redell, "today in the bay." we have more breaking news, this time in san francisco. police investigating a deadly shooting this morning. officers are near the interstion of brookdale and bridesdale avenues just a few blocks away. stephanie chuang joins us live with the latest, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. a lot more activity since we last updated you. in fact the medical examiner's office just came out out and pulled out this gurney as they're waiting to pull the body where it's lying. right now we didn't want to go on the other side because it's lying in plain sight on a sidewalk, a pathway in front of these apartments here in this sunnydale neighborhood. now, if you look at some of the video we got earlier, there are a couple dozen evidence markers that we do not have official confirmation of the identity of this homicide victim, but it appears it's a man, and family members arrived in just the last
5:35 am
half hour. one man who says he knows the victim described him as a devoted father in his 20s. >> he's a good, young man. and he was always picking up his children on time, every day after school, and that's how i knew him down in the business, down by the teen center, he would pick his kids up. he always helped us set up equipments and break down chairs. he would always help me whenever i needed him. >> reporter: and back here live, you see again an active investigation right now. it actually turned quite emotional as we heard someone who appears to be the victim's girlfriend, or even mother of his children, she was crying, very emotional, and i said mother, she was talking about two children apparently ages three and five that this man has left behind. other family members out here getting spoken to by homicide investigators. so again, very active right now. larry jones who you just heard

5:38 am
and for us. >> at least not today. now tomorrow we will be cooler, but we're going to incorporate additional thunderstorms into the forecast. so we have the chance for dry lightning strikes as we get into the next week. basically it means we need to keep our guard up as high as we can when it comes to fire safety. right now it's mild out there, we're seeing an onshore flow for a full deck of clouds at local beaches, inner bay, we have some here to start the bay. what you'll notice about the clouds as we head throughout the day today, midlevel clouds in addition to the low clouds. that's tropical moisture coming up that's going to make it feel muggy. we're going to talk about that in just a minute, for today, let's focus on the heat. that is the weather story. 88 degrees in the south bay, peninsula's at 81 degrees. 80 degrees in oakland, it's going to be warm. five to ten degrees warm aeroin most of your cities than where we ended up yesterday. now out on the east shore, temperatures at # 0 degrees, tri-valley at 95 degrees. you can also see the midlevel

"today in the bay's" tracy potts is live on capitol hill this morning. there appears to be options on the table, but no one's agreeing on what's going to work. >> reporter: yeah, not even within parties, democrats and democrats, republicans and republicans have different opinions on what's going to fix the situation with tens of thousands of children spilling across the border. as many as 90,000 this year the government thinks. what are they going to do? when congress comes back today, here are their options, first of all they have their $2 billion request from the obama
5:44 am
