laura garcia-cannon. we have a crew at the scene of that deadly scene in san francisco this morning. we now know that someone lost their lives and people in the neighborhood are feeling anxious. stephanie chuang is there gathering details for us, right now we will go to her in just a bit. to mexico now, and there is no widespread damage in mexico, however, we know that this has become a fatal incident. this is a picture of some of the damage in guatemala along the border, guatemala and mexico, happened near puerto. it did cause damage to some of the buildings there. some people if he mexico city, which is 650 miles away say they felt the earthquake shaking. we are told that the light post and some of the buildings were also swaying there. but again, at least two people

lost their lives in that 7.1 magnitude quake. 6:01 meanwhile we continue to cover the news this morning. we have been talking about the manresa fire as well. this is happening now. more than 1,000 firefighters including crews from the bay area is on the front lines, well this is a fire in yolo county. we'll continue to cover all of these fires. the wild fire which broke friday is charring about 6500 acres. firefighters expect another day of erratic wind and hot temperatures happening near the month sell low dam, so far the flames are only 30% contained. the families are slowly coming back from into their homes. one firefighter was hurt when his bulldozer flipped. his condition is unflown. and now back out to la las gatos where the firefighters and the fire fight continues. first we'll talk about this

fire. this is the one that is in napa county now, 85% contained. flames have chewed through about seven square miles of dry, rukd terrain since the fire started last tuesday, two homes and several sheds and outbuildings were destroyed. the fire again, 85% contained. now i know we've been talking about this manresa fire, i apologize it took us a moment to get to it. more than two dozen firefighters fighting this fire, this is video from earlier this morning, a popular south bay restaurant just incredibly famous. bob redell live outside of the manresa restaurant, give us the latest. >> reporter: good morning, scott, now that we have the sunlight, you can get a sense of just how extensive the damage is to the backside of the restaurant. which is basically under control, right now you have firefighters on the roof doing overall which is basically venting which you can see right there, firefighter doing with the chain saw. looking for areas where there's hot spots, and once there's

oxygen, they flair up again, they're there to put it back up. this is the backside of the restaurant, inside was the kitchen. that area is damaged. and you have the front side of the restaurant which is the dining area, and the flames didn't get into that section, the chief does tell us there is smoke daniel throughout the restaurant. the owner is aware, they are out of town right now. this happened around 4:00 this morning. someone walking by saw the fire, calmed 911. the fire department which has a station just 100 yards away was quickly here on the scene. and when they arrived, there was flames coming out of the gas meter. that area, on the outside, and they realized they were going to have to call for back-up. they did call far second alarm. they have about 35 firefighters. and this fire took a good hour to really, finish them to get a handlen to. unfortunately it extended through the roof which you saw moments ago is destroyed. they're not sure if that gas

meter is. cause of the fire or if that was the source of the fire, but maybe started somewhere else and went to the gas meter or if it started at the gas meter itself. it's too early for them to make the determination. they're going to get the gas line shut off within the first 30 to 45 minutes. thoen come back out here live, you can see that the fire, as they said basically under control. they're doing overhaul right now. no one was inside. one firefighter was hurt though. he tripped over debris, has been taken to the hospital to be treated for a possible rib injury, but he is expected to be okay. again, a two-alarm fire here at two michelin star rated manresa restaurant here in los gatos. smoke damaged throughout the restaurant, reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you much. police are investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in san francisco. officers neither intersection of

brookdale avenue just a few blocks away from the cow palace. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live in san francisco, and unfortunately, stephanie, now it is confirmed that this was a fatal shooting. >> reporter: yes, good morning, kris. tragic news this morning. and we've learned not from police, but from loved ones that this was a man and more than that, a father. now, san francisco firefighters actually just arrived to help with the clearing up of the scene. that's because they just took the victim's body away in the medical examiner's truck. and it's where that firefighters just went around the corner. that's where the man was lying on a pathway in front of these apartments here. he's surrounded bay couple dozen evidence markers. san francisco police got to this sunnydale neighborhood just after 3:00 this morning after hearing aek the shooting that turned into a homicide. we do not have again official confirmation of the identity from police, but family members arrived, some extremely emotional as they spoke with officers. one man who says he knows the

victim, described him as a devoted father in his 20s and he says he's worried that this is the story of a violent period in this neighborhood. >> we went on about a six, seven month run where we had no trouble. our young guys been going to work around here, the mayor's been giving jobs out, the guys have been busy going home, we haven't had any trouble. >> reporter: the medical examiner's office again had been out here all morning along with homicide investigators. they've taken the body away and police are expected to be out here for a little while longer gathering evidence to take back to pros and back here live, you can see some of them are out no longer with the flashlights as it's light out, but sthef the cameras in hand as they are still trying to get every little bit of evidence again processed back at the department. and larry jones who you just heard him, he would see the victim pick up his two young kids from the teen center every day after school. so again, describing him as a devoted father and he says no

cloud cover, and this is what's unusual, typically that the time of the morning, we have plenty of low clouds. to see the subtropical clouds coming in, very unusual, and they're reaching all the way into the extreme east bay. meanwhile, pavk ka this morning showing -- pacifica this morning, sunol, you can see the moisture in the atmosphere with the midlevel clouds painting a really pretty sunrise. the story of the day, cool, coastal clouds will keep temperatures mild all the way to oakland. hot inland though, today we're going to cut off the flow, as a result, temperatures reflecting that. 88 degrees for us, 80 degrees for the east shore. 88 degrees in the north bay with humidity north carolinaing throughout the next couple of days eastern you miegts even need your umbrella it this week. we'll show you where and win when, say good morning to mike inouye. >> my daughter will be happy about umbrella. i kept saying go to bed. she's going to have trouble getting up this morning.

bay bridge toll plaza, no problems here. we have the back-ups, metering lights are on and slow for the entire stretch, past west grand avenue at overcrossing. we do see a smoother drive on the approach, bottom of your screen, we circled the coliseum, where the a's will play cross tune rooifls, the giants. we're watching for traffic after work. right now we have a lot of slowing from san pablo, west 80 at mcdonald avenue in richmond. we have a crash clearing from the lanes. tow crews arrive and once dhie, then we should clear that up and see a quick recovery. slower there still. also slow, southbound 60 in san ramone towards the canyon road where the crash has moved out of the roadway. northbound at crow canyon, crash there, but it's countercommute and no slowing throughout the stretch of the report. slower drive as you travel up towards padre and peralta and closure there. look at the video from earlier they are morning, few minutes ago, this is cloet sure. police are kbating a major injury accident.

6:14 now, today's to be stories, popular restaurant was damaged this morning in a fire. investigators so far say there's nothing suspicious about this fire at manresa restaurant. while it was not destroyed, there is heavy smoke damage inside. in san francisco, investigators looking into a deadly shooting. happened this morning in an apartment complex. a few blocks away from the cow palace. no word on the identity of the victim. at least no official word. and no arrests. get ready to have your cell phone checked if you are flying

back to the u.s. tsa says they will require passengers to turn on electronic devices before passing through airport security. that measure is in place because of concerns that terrorists may developing new explosives. lawyers from oscar pistorius say a video that aired ooefr the weekend showing the former olympian reenacting the shooting that killed his girlfriend was obtained illegally. the video was reportedly made last year as the defense prepares for the trial. meanwhile, the chief prosecutor in the murder trial said the physician who testified the athlete has an anxiety linked to his disability can't be objective because that position has a long history with pistorius. happening now, japan is bracing for a powerful super typhoon. than storm is headed straight for the country's southern islands. heavy rains along with wind gusts topping 170 miles per hour and 50 foot waves are expected to hit starting early tomorrow.

forecasters say this could be one of the strongest storms to hit japan in decades. this morning a southern california community mourning the los of a lifeguard who drowned while trying to rescue a swimmer after a frantic three-hour search in rough waters, fellow life guards pulled the body of ben carl sonz to shore. he had gone into the water to help a struggling swimmer and the two were hit by a large wave. carl sonz went under, the swimmer made it to shore safely. another swimmer and former lifeguard was attacked by a young, great white shark off manhattan beach. >> keep swimming, get out of the water. >> just yesterday, robles met justin hoot, one of the men who came to the rescue. hoot heard the screams for help from the surf board rental tent where he works, grabbed the

board, pat ld out to help him to shore. robles is alive to tell the tale. >> you can feel the whole body shaking. the whole thing's trying to gnaw in. surfaces to the top, i see him for about two seconds and he makes a really sharp turn. >> he has deep cuts under his right arm and punctured artery. he's upset with the fisherman that hooked that shark and did not cut the line right away. >> i'm just not sure about the advice, keep swimming. >> get out of the water. >> there's a shark behind you. >> yeah. i think that was a given. >> justin hoot, he jumped in. >> yes. now time to check the forecast as we look live at our sky camera from san bruno mountain and looking very pretty with a cloudy start. hopefully they'll stay cool, i'm thinking maybe not. >> no, probably won't. but you know it's really interesting, you see the midlevel clouds coming in. it's going to look like florida

out there today. not going to feel like sticky,icy as it can feel in south florida this time of year. i can tell you, we have a little bit of subtropical moisture coming into the bay area, and as a result, it means it's going to be sticky out there. and so you're going to be sweating a little bit more than you usually do, it's more available moisture. also, it's going to feel even hotter than the true temperature because that air with that moisture actually has a weight to it. it's funny, peep don't realize, air is amazing insulator, that's why you have those downed feathers in fact parkas, but you didn't know that, did you? smart bay area, you probably did. 54 degrees in half-moon bay. i love science, let's talk about it right now. let me show you where the low clouds are this morning, and we'll talk about the midlevel clouds and where they're coming in from. right now this is per usual. this is what we normally see this time of the morning on-shore flow providing plenty of fog and low clouds to the immediate coast. here is the interesting thing.

we're getting a lot of these midlevel clouds out there, you can clearly see that here from the south bay this morning, painting a gorgeous sunrise, this is going to be the story all day long. we're not going to see it completely sunny sky later on today, we will see sunshine, but we're going to keep the clouds coming in and that humidity increasing as we head throughout the day today. let's talk a little bit of baseball, shall we? chances are one of your teams are in town. giants, oakland, oh yeah. they are battling tonight. 63 degrees, 7:05, o.co coliseum. wind tonight out of the west. ten top 15 miles per hour. you're going to watch for the flags to blow out towards center field, and if we get any strong gusts, we could potentially see that ball picked up and carried out towards right center field. that looks to be the scenario for tonight. if you want to find out if i'm right, keep it right here, you'll find the game on nbc bay area. sop let's talk about that monsoonal moisture, high pressure situated over the four corners renal, this is per usual. this is also something that we see this time of year. what is unusual about it though

is that some of the moisture's going to come into the bay area through the next couple of days and you might have to pull out your umbrella as we head throughout wednesday night. future cast showing you here the measurable precipitation. overall temperatures are going to drop off, but the humidity is going to north carolina and so really not too bad, but a little interesting out there. a limit change. let's find out how we're doing on the road, always changing that the hour, here's mike. this is changing, not interesting, but we'll take that over here. south bay, that's a good thing. snort 101 from 680 up, and good drive right now, similar case down at the bottom of your screen, just a little bit of slowing, over the next half hour. we'll get a later start to the commute, summer time traffic flow over there. the rest of the bay moving nicely. we talk about the surface street, it's the major for fremont, paseo, padre between peralta, over here by the train crossing, over around the bend by the apartments there. now once you get over towards

it, it's reopened again. major injury crash, they remain closed until 8:00 a.m. meanwhile, thornton, fremont, and peralta themselves, they make the the gnat, either direction past that scene. that's just fine for highway 84 there. interstate 680 slows a bit heading towards highway 84 here as well and gets confusing, but look at that, nothing confusing as far as the flow of traffic through the tri-valley. it's standard. over here, san ramone southbound, we had an earlier crash at canyon road which cleared from the roadway, caused early slowing and we see that in your direction. northbound another crash at crow canyon road, no slowing past that scene except for right there at the scene of the crash. westbound 80, commute direction flows into and through san pablo. jamming up towards mcdonalds avenue where a crash reportedly has one car in lane for folks to go on either side. you are clear, the rest heading towards the bay bridge, we have the back-up at the toll plaza. they look this over here, no big

to the opening bell, the nyse, the dow industrial is over 17,000 as we get a three-day weekend finish and back into the trading on the nasdaq. a charity group opening the nasdaq as well. there they launch off. today is monday, july 7th, this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, thank you for joining us and happy monday. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news at an update this morning in the light of day, revealing the extensive damage at a popular south bay restaurant. it was ripped apart by flames overnight. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in los gatos outside manresa restaurant. the crews think the fire started at the gas meter. it could have been an explosive situation. >> reporter: well whb they arrived -- when they arrived,

the gas meter was on fire. they don't know if that was the source. they said the gas meter was on fire, we saw flames firing out for a good 30 minutes until pge was able to shut it off. they don't know if it started at the gas meter on the outside and went up to the roof, eves, attic which is where you see the firefighters doing the overhaul now or if it started somewhere else. it's too early to tell. we just spoke with an assistant to the owner of the restaurant, obviously in shock as far as what happened. the manresa restaurant here, michelin restaurant here, shut down for the holiday. she heard from the owner, chef david who coincidently is on his way back was a planned return for today. his plan is to get here, come straight here to survey the damage of what happened to his business here. fortunately no one was inside at the time. it started around 4:00 no morning. the fire department arrived and

realized quickly they were needing to call for a second alarm because of how severe the fire was. as you can see, as you just saw moments ago, they are in overhaul mode. the fire is technically out. the at sick cutting in the holes and looking for the areas to flair back out and they're ripping it out and throwing it on the ground so they can say hey, this fire is no longer a threat of extending. one firefighter was hurt. this firefighter fell on some debris early on part of the fire fight. suffering from a rib injury, but is expected to be okay. he was taken to the hospital. as i mentioned, expected to be okay. again, manresa restaurant was supposed to be reopening this wednesday. that's not going to be happening. reporting live here in las gta, sos, "today in the bay." 63 girls and women abducted by islamic extremists have escaped. the group was taken from the village two weeks ago. it's unclear how they managed to get away, but small scale

kidnappings by the group boko haram have been going on for months. they took almost 300 schoolgirls in april. more than 200 of those girls are still missing. well when congress returns to session today, it's going to face a tough request from the president, $2 billion to help deal with the crisis at the border. by the end of the year, total of 90,000 children without parents are expected to illegal enter the united states. nearly all are from central america, mostly honduras and guatemala. protesters on both sides of the issue clashed in southern california over the weekend. lawmakers have twufrd solutions, increase penalties for smugglers or hire 6,000 agents and add more fencing and cameras at the border. but the administration is looking at other options. >> i know it sounds harsh, i know it sounds difficult, but they're creating a crisis at this time that is actually going to harm these children. >> added flexibility to deal

comfort of your air-conditioned home or office, it's going to be hot out there today. 88 degrees in the north bay, 65 for san francisco, 88 degrees in the south bay today, and 80 degrees on the east shore, i want to give you an idea of the difference between the east shore and the extreme east bay. 80 today in oaktown versus 95 degrees out in places like sunol and pleasanton. it'll be hot. be ready. as we get into the rest of the week, this is where we're headed, temperatures will drop off. we'll lose five to tenderize in the hot spots. we'll dheep cooling in coming in through the end of the week. here's the deal, in combination to the cooler weather, we're going to increase the humidity. i'm going to show you why in my next report and let you know if you might need to break out that umbrella for a couple days, only a couple spots, stick around, find out if it's yours, here's the first in your drive. >> do you get it? all right looking at the bay bridge, we're going get up for all laneses.

two jets almost hitting each other at a spanish airport. investigators say one plane was about to land when another got in its path on the runway. that first plane managed to pull up just in the nick of time. an official with the airport told a spanish newspaper that the plane would have had enough room. >> i'm going to disagree with that official. i'm no pilot, but that doesn't look like enough room. >> i can't imagine what they were thinking as they looked out the window. >> oh goodness gracious. everything turned out great. body found on a san francisco sidewalk, now homicide investigators are on the scene, we have the latest coming up in a live report. plus the flames tear through a world famous restaurant in the south bay this morning. show crews managed to save manresa from burning to the ground. plus a strong earthquake wreaks havoc on the streets of mexico, the damage reports coming up next.

this is where the fire appears to have started. when the fire department arrived around 4:00 this morning, the gas meter was on fire, and it's to the left of where the hose is being strayed right now. we have a battalion chief, are we to read into the fact that the gas meter was on fire, and it appears to have spread from there? >> not exactly sure what to read into at this the point. part of the investigation, and we always want to the check the system. we're looking for ignition sources in the investigation part. so, we don't rule anything out at this point we can't say for sure what happened. >> reporter: is there anything suspicious on the surface? >> on the surface, no, it's fairly common for a gas meeter to burn because the small meltable metals, they're designed to fall apart for over pressure situations. it's not unusual. it's mostly location and what was around it, what was the potential ignition sources. >> reporter: when we look at the video from an hour, two hours ago, it was extensive through

the roof, but you were able to keep it to the back portion of the restaurant. what was the hardest part, or the biggest challenge in this particular fire? >> one of the things that you have to consider as firefighters, when we come into a building, it's not something like your home or business where you're there every day and you're very intimately familiar of what's going on. we have a basic knowledge of what's happening in a building over the years, but we don't have specific knowledge. the challenge now you're seeing the guys in the background here, this is an older structure, it's not brand new. there could be small spaces that the guys are digging out. we're trying to make sure that anything is burning is dead cold, out, so it doesn't come back. >> reporter: one of your firefighters fell on debris in the early part of the fire fight possible rib injury, taken to the hospital, he's expected to be okay? >> expected to be okay. we have him county, em took him to county samaritan hospital. we expect him to be released later today. not a life threatening injury. >> reporter: chief, thank you very much, glad everyone else is

okay. two alarm fire here, upscale restaurant here downtown lo los gatos. they were going to reopen wednesday, that won't be happening. reporting live here in lo los gatos, bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news in san francisco, where police are investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment complex not far from the cow palace. stephanie chuang joins us live with the latest, steph, you were telling us that the scene appears to be clear, but that's not easing the nerves of people who live there. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris, a lot of unnerved folks in this neighborhood. now here the police cleared the scene about 20 minutes ago. and we haven't gotten official updates, but we learned from loved one this morning that the victim was a young man, devoted father in his 20s. and police found him where you see markings on the pathway in front of these apartments here in this sunniville neighborhood

after 3:00 this morning. homicide investigators were on scene about an hour later. officers had placed a couple dozen evidence markers around the body. one woman who says she was friends with the victim said she woke up to what sounded like fire crackers which she thought of because of the fourth of july weekend. then the police showed up. they are not only sad for the los, but worried about his family, especially his two young kids. >> i just pray for his dad, man, and the children that i see him pick up every day, those are the ones i'm concerned about because now their lives are affected. >> we just lost stephanie chuang's microphone, but she told us that it appears that that victim was a doting father. the investigation continues, no word on any suspects or any arrests at this point. and an update to other breaking news right now. the usgs downgraded a earthquake

in mexico to a 6.9. the quake struck about five miles northeast near the gautama lan border. this is a picture of some of the damage in guatemala where at least two people died when their homes collapsed. the quake was originally calculated to be a magnitude 7.1. it knocked out power in the western part of guatemala and one firefighter reported damage to at least 30 homes, and also reporting several rock slides. people in mexico city about 660 miles away say they felt the shaking as well. there are no immediate reports of damage in mexico city. let's go live as we check your forecast and live look at san jose today. lots of clouds, christina was saying it's going to look a little bit like fvl except without the alligators. >> you never know. there's always some gators on the road. yeah, you know, use a little more men in your life. 6:49, let's talk about, i'm

actually engaged, i get in trouble i say stuff like that now. i've got to the remember, girl, he put a ring on it. san jose, taking a live look here and you can see those midlevel clouds out there this morning. i mean you really can tell the difference. if you lived in the bay area for a duration of time, we don't get that many die days where we get the beautiful clouds. in fact it's the summer time right around now when we get the opportunities. all from monsoon moisture which is working its way from the south. really cool, we get it this time of year. it's unusual to see the moisture creep as far north as the bay area. that only happens two to three times on summer per average. we're getting into one of the time frames. pacifica a clear sky as far as the low clouds go, a little bit of the patchy low cloud cover here. midlevel clouds, that's the story of the day. it's going to be sticky and this is the picture.

all right, the showers, that's high pressure. it's sucking up moisture from the off the coast of baja and pulls it into southern california and along the spine of sierra nevada. this far north sun usual. our -- is unusual. our best chance is wednesday. some really cool stuff though. triple digits and a 20% chance of rain, that's the forecast for the tri-valley today. let's check your drive, here's mike. >> we have about 100% chance of of that, back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is expected though and this is not unanticipated. well above the deck where you'd be driving through the area. we'll show you the entire approach to the bay bridge moves smoothly, slowing through berkeley. some of that is because the traffic held up upper east shore freeway down through san pablo to richmond where an earlier crash took quite some time, and that caused all this traffic in the back-up there was a break down and fender bender. looks like all lanes are clear,

still big clearing for the freeway. rest of the bay looks predictable. slowing south through hayward and into union city, northbound at industrial and over just north of the coliseum, two stalls reported, two separate stalls and may be a little slowing as you pass by towards the center divide in both cases. we have slowing westbound towards the sunol area. and a smooth drive through the rest of the bay as you travel south into the south bay. 101, a little slowing right here around the interchange. we look at the peninsula. quick look out there shows you traffic is light here. no big surprises between here and the city where 280 opened early last night it opened in fact back to the maps, south bay with north 280 and 85, sudden slow down towards 17, no incidents reported there, but we'll continue to check that. watching roads and rails, we're watching bart, muni has longer wait times which pop up about now. and you'll check the next to find out when that's going on.

l.a. freeway last week. the family has scheduled a news conference for today. officers say pinnic is being held on a mental evaluation hold right now. the officer on the tape has not been identified, he is now on administrative leave. san jose police are investigating the store where a man bought an illegal firework that blew off one of his hands. it happened on the fourth of july near castle park, he and his family were celebrating the fourth. family members say ortiz was lighting the explosive when it exploded prematurely. now this was described as a professional grade firework. he had to have his right hand amputated and he lost three fingers on his left. local leaders will hold a town hall meeting today to talk about getting care at the paul lowe alto va amid allegations that veterans died at other va facilities. veterans who have been treated at the palo alto va hospital are encouraged to share their facilities at the meeting that starts at 1:00 today.

it'll be held at theed a or it -- the auditorium. the al low alto is distancesing itself from the phoenix facility which delayed giving care to veterans in need resulting in 40 deaths. similar problems were reported at va hospitals nationwide. the facility in palo alto held meetings with elected officials in hopes of letting them know the facility is not like other va hospitals across the country. according to the palo alto weekly, established patients have to wait just five to six days to be seen at the palo alto facility. people with small children and small pets in one san mateo neighborhood are warned to be extra careful after two mountain lion sightings inless than a week. the first happened last tuesday, the second happened over the weekend in san mateo's highlands area. it is believed to be the same mountain lion. also over the weekend, someone found the carcass of a deer which is believed to have been thinner for that big cat.
