we begin with breaking news. just hours old. the olympic runner's trial has gotten so much publicity, the defense saying some witnesses did not want to take the stand. oral closing arguments are scheduled for august 7th. prosecution and defense will file their written lowsing arguments to the judge in coming weeks. pistol or where yous killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, in his home. he says he mistook her for an intruder. the prosecution says he shot her after an argument. it's the most powerful typhoon to hit japan in decades. it's baring down on the islands of okinawa with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. that's 20% faster than at any point with hurricane arthur, which grazed the east coast just last week. more than half a million people have been told to evacuate in areas of japan as it makes its way to the mainland. here's nbc's ian williams in

bangkok. >> the typhoon has been downgraded, but it has sustained winds of more than 110 miles per hour, and gusts of around 150 miles per hour. it is now at its most intense as it passes around 270 to 100 miles to the west of the main island of okinawa. now, some 600,000 people have been urged to take shelter from the intense rains from the winds, from the danger of storm surges. this, japan's highest level of warning as they make when the typhoons come through. machining the residents of the island, don't forget, are 30,000 american service personnel. it's the biggest base in the pacific region. the base is on lockdown. nhk, the japanese broadcaster,

says that so far eight people have been injured. thankfully, none of them seriously, richard. >> nbc's ian williams. thank you so much. the very latest for us. today president obama is expected to officially request $2 million from congress to step up border security. this comes in response to the influx of underaged, undocumented immigrants crossing into the united states. the white house is pressuring the house and senate to act on it. nbc's tracie potts is in washington d.c. for us. good morning to you, tracie. though many said immigration reform is dead, we have this now happening there in washington d.c. people wondering, is this a new opening on the topic? >> it's a good question, richard, but it's not really clear this is going to lead to full-scale immigration reform. this is more like the administration and congress dealing with this crisis that's developed because of the lack of immigration reform. now the president says he needs more money to try to not only house these children, but get

them back home. >> reporter: there's growing concern in washington about the thousands of children that cross the border alone. >> what we want from the president that he doesn't deport those kids. >> reporter: there's growing concern about the cost of keeping them here. >> we've got to take care of the children. we can't leave them in a circumstance where they're not fed or taken care of or in a safe condition. we'll have to find some money, i guess, to do that. >> reporter: today president obama will formally ask congress for $2 billion for more judges and legal aid to begin deportation and for detention facilities to house the influx of immigrants from central america. facilities the president has not yet seen for himself. >> reporter: president obama evidently needs a wake-up call, and visiting the border and learning firsthand about the severity and costs of this ongoing crisis will be that wake-up call. >> reporter: we're now hearing

from some of those families who want to stay in the u.s. >> no one has the right to judge people. we are equal. we are immigrants. >> reporter: despite the circumstances back home, the white house doubts these children will qualify for humanitarian relief. >> that means they will not have the legal basis for remaining in this country and will be returned. >> reporter: how many and how soon is still up in the air. >> also still nup the air, we don't know how long it might take these lawmakers to consider and perhaps approve this request for the $2 billion, but it's coming today. >> we have to underline the word perhaps. thank you so much. militants in the gaza strip continue to fire rockets into israel today. that while israeli military says it struck back, hitting at least 50 sites in the ham whereas ruled gaza strip. israel's prime minister saying today they are acting to put an end to this once and for all. according to the "new york times", israel is calling up

1,500 reservist troops, possibly preparing for ground invasion. amman mojudin reports, there is a full-scale intifada style of violence. >> reporter: calls for defense are getting louder. palestinian militants vow to avenge fighters killed by israel in air strikes, and israel says it is prepared to intensify attacks to stop palestinian rocket fire. both sides exchanging more rhetoric while palestinians and israeli parents still grieve for their children. raquel is the mother of the 16-year-old american teenager buried last week along with two other jewish teens killed by suspected palestinian militants still at large. >> no mother or father should go through what we are going through now, and we share the pain of the parents of mohammed. >> reporter: mohammed's father took me to the street and showed me where his 17-year-old son, a palestinian, was kidnapped before he was burned alive by suspected jewish extremists.

before we arrive israel's prime minister offered his condolences condemning the murder and saying the suspects who have been arrested will be brought to justice. mohammed's murder, considered a revenge attack for the three jewish teens, triggered widespread clashes in east jerusalem. his cousin, a palestinian-american teenager from florida, was caught up in the fighting and severely beaten when police arrested him. his beating was captured in a video that went viral and triggered outrage among palestinians. thousands attended mohammed's funeral, and tariq was in jail and couldn't say good-bye. >> do you feel bad about not being there? >> i feel so bad. i feel like i missed a chance to see him one last time. >> reporter: we joined him and his father as they visited mohammed's grave to pay their final respects. a moment of peace amidst the looming threat of war. the family of a grandmother who was beaten by a california highway patrol officer plans to sue on her behalf.

last week a video of the beating surfaced on youtube. the officer pins down the 51-year-old, pummels her repeatedly. family members say marlene suffered multiple injuries, and her civil rights were violated. they're not saying who they will be suing exactly. police say she posed a danger to herself because she was walking through traffic lanes. she's been hospitalized and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation. that officer has been suspended. new york city police apprehended a 20-year-old woman after she abandoned a baby on a subway platform. witnesses say the woman pushed a stroller off the train and on to the subway platform during a stop. the woman then stayed on the train as it left the station. doctors say the baby girl, believed to be 6 to 7 months old is in good condition. she's now with children services. indicateden was born with organs outside his body. the 2-year-old also had both of his legs amputated, and then this.
